I just transitioned from a desk job to one where I'm constantly running around and on my feet and I realized my Converse and fashion sneakers weren't cutting it. Thoroughly impressed with my first visit to On the Run Shoes. It's been at least 20 years since the last time I had the kind of full service shoe shopping that they provide here. I arrived on a Saturday around noon, was greeted immediately upon entering, and was asked if I was in to browse or if I needed assistance. I chose the latter and was assigned very promptly to the sales specialist Will. He had me sit and asked me questions on what I was looking for. I told him about my new work situation and he asked what kinds of aches and pains I was experiencing in my feet at work. I told him it was primarily in the arch and ball of my foot and I was mostly worried about my knees and lower back. My job involves shipping and order fulfillment and I work out of a converted home in the city - all day long I'm either standing, carrying boxes up and down stairs, or running around doing various tasks. It's rare that I sit unless I'm on my lunch break. Will also had me take the shoes I was wearing off and walk back and forth in my socks so he could analyze my gait. Then he measured my feet and turns out that my shoe size is more of an 8 or 8.5 - I'd been wearing size 7 for years! After the consultation Will brought out three pairs of shoes for me to try. HOKA, New Balance, and Brooks. He put them on me and laced them up, then had me walk around in them and give him feedback. I figured out pretty quickly that the New Balance shoes felt the best - the other two were a little too roomy and wide - I like the feeling when a shoe is hugging my foot and is secure. I was also recommended to get special cork insoles for greater arch support and stability. Will put those insoles into the shoes I chose and had me feel the difference. I ended up purchasing both the shoes and insoles. Total with tax was just a little over $240. It's the most I've spent on shoes in decades but it's worth the splurge being that I'll be wearing these at least 5 out of the 7 days each week. At checkout I was told of their return policy - only store credit and the shoes have to be in re-sellable condition. I doubt I'm going to have problems with these after the very thorough consultation and selection process. Thank you to everyone and especially to Will for an amazing experience. I'll definitely be back and also highly recommend anyone to go here if you want happy feet. I take public transport in the city and the 44 MUNI drops me off literally across the street from the shop at 9th and Irving. read more

I rely on these folks for their expertise and knowledge, I have been a customer for at least 10 years, I am an active person and go through running shoes quickly. I just got a pair of Brooks a couple weeks back, and MJ was the staff who helped me. He gave me a ton of information about why my feet were bothering me. read more

After many years of being disabled, I was able to regain my mobility last year through surgery. Now that I can walk again, that's all I want to do. Strap on my sneakers and walk, walk, walk. Unfortunately for my feet and back, my sneakers of choice are Converse. I have no less than 10 pairs, but not one of them is suitable for the type and volume of walking I'm doing now. I could have easily gone to a DSW or Foot Locker for walking shoes, but knowing myself I would have spun into a spiral of analysis paralysis, second-guessing, and doubt. Instead, I decided to visit On The Run, which I knew about from a former boss who was very particular about her footwear due to her own orthopedic issues. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by sales associate Rahnsom. He led me to a chair and began asking exploratory questions to get a sense of my needs. He took measurements and had me walk around a bit in my socks to see what my feet and ankles were doing. With this information he was able to immediately pull 4 shoes that fit perfectly. He helped me into each pair and had me walk around the store and go up and down a little hiking simulator to test how they felt. He chose very well. Out of the first three pairs, I could have easily walked out with two of them and been happy. Even the pair that I would have passed on was comfortable but a little too high for clumsy me. When I tried on the fourth pair, though, the Goldilocks in me knew that these shoes were just right. Regarding pricing, my particular pair of New Balance was $199. Coming from a Converse budget that may have seemed high, but I was determined to invest in my comfort and safety. Additionally, I place great value on the personalized service and information that Rahnsom provided. Had I gone to a "regular" retail store, I am certain I would have wasted money on the wrong shoe. For example, I had zero idea I was actually an 8 wide. I would have bought a size 9 shoe like I usually do then would have suffered - like I usually do - with a pair that was still too narrow in the front but with my heels moving up and down in the back as I walk. Out of curiosity I just checked online for prices elsewhere on my shoes and I consistently found them at $199. So, in my personal experience so far, On The Run isn't necessarily pricier than other stores. Even if it is, I can't put a price on being able to find the perfect shoe for my situation, in record time and with zero angst and indecision. read more

Amazing experience! Really nice store and the staff was very friendly. Will helped me and he was amazing!

Tomek at On the Run was an impeccable shoe salesman. My friend Emma and I came in on a Thursday evening, knowing nothing except the fact that we needed new running shoes. We learned so much about our individual foot biomechanics and needs. He was very helpful in assisting us with finding the perfect pair of shoes, taught us great stretches to help our lower body pain, and was simply a joy to be around. Thank you, we will definitely be back. I'd highly recommend coming to this store...look no further! read more

Come here for the shoes, come back for the high level of service. Not that cheap, but they have what you need. Tons of orthotic insoles along every wall and for me, I never have issues finding exactly the size of Hokas that I need here. Compared to your usual shoe place, the sales folks here are straightforward and provide a much higher degree of knowledge and competency in understanding your needs and getting you the right kind footwear, be it comfy running/street/casual/work/fancy shoes, insoles or just sandals. Parking can be a little challenging sometimes in this area but the Muni J light rail line will take you right here. read more

I have tried to work with the store to return the defective shoes and they refuse. They are saying i have to come in person which I am not willing to do as their staff is rude and disrespectful. I plan to send the shoes back. UPDATE I got in touch with the shoe company directly, and it turns out the salesman on the run sold me the entirely wrong size. After telling me, I was a 9.5 wide he sold me a 9.0. The shoe company is going to send me a new pair of shoes in the correct size without having to deal with this horrible store and their shady sales people anymore. read more

My boyfriend just finished buying a pair of shoes here. He is tough to fit (14EEEE). He came home excited about being able to try on not just one, not just two, but five different styles of shoes. They took their time and didn't get exasperated. Explained the differences in shoes, the foam types, got into the weeds of different running styles. Really great experience. And the price was the same as online or a big box. Fantastic work Ivy H and OtR. You'll be our first stop from now on. Thank you. read more

My sister suggested that I go to this business to insure that I buy exactly the right shoes, and the salesman there did go into some detail about his professional knowledge and the high quality of the shoes; so I came away with two pairs of expensive shoes plus a couple of rather expensive inserts. Then a few days later I went into the Burlington Coat factory, which also offered shoes that fit comfortably. These look quite similar to what I had already bought but were sold at a dramatically lower price. If fact, for anyone who's OK with driving to the Serramonte mall's Nordstrom Rack, they have the biggest selection at 1/3 the price. As such, I won't be going to On the Run in the future, no matter how blessed or magical their products are supposed to be. read more

One of the most surprising things about my experience at On The Run was the very attentive staff who not only measure your foot and get you your shoes, but they are old school and sit down with you, unlace your shoe, hold the shoe open while you put your foot in the shoe, and then lace it up for you. I haven't had that kind of service in a long time. And they seem pretty knowledgeable about the their products. They do seem to work in commission, though, so it's tricky if you get helped by two different people on different visits. The two drawbacks I would mention is that they do not have a good return policy, only store credit or exchange. And when asked if they honor competitive prices, they only honor the manufacturer's lower price on their website. So even though I found the same shoe at another shoe store for $20 less, they wouldn't honor that price. I ended up purchasing from On The Run because of the great customer service I received. read more

I've been coming to this store over the years. They sell a great cork arch support that I come back for every time I get a new pair of athletic shoes. Because of the cumulative purchases I've made over the years, I got a discount savings of $25 on the purchase. The staff, Sid, was so helpful and made sure the insert fit my new shoes. Hope to be back to maybe try on a pair of Danskos I was eyeing. read more

I am a new runner and after walking past On the Run for years, I knew this is where I wanted to get fit for running shoes. From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, Timothy was incredible kind and extremely knowledgeable. He explained everything to me in a way that made sense, and walked me through the whole process which I appreciated. Truly, this was the best shoe shopping experience in my entire life! Timothy did not only deliver gold star customer service, but he's got funny foot related jokes too. It made my experience so wonderful. I left feeling both mentally and physically supported on my runners journey. I'll definitely be back and will recommend this spot to friends in search of solid shoes and inserts. Thanks so much! read more

Years ago I had foot problems and my doctor recommended that I go to On the Run. I was happy with the results. A few years passed and I just had another foot issue and a different doctor told me to go there. Great customer service, no pushy sales and I realized that my interim buying on the web was risky because of the difference in seeing an expert fitter who knows what they're doing. Your feet change and those subtleties are only discovered by dealing with people who can help you work through the changes/issues. Another great experience and I can't imagine buying running shoes off the web ever again. My mistake. The difference is like day and night when buying from On the Run. The person I dealt with this time was Rahnsom. He was great and patiently listened to my unique questions about my issues. Happy customer again. BTW- my doctor shamed me for buying off the web after after having such an initial great customer experience with On the Run. I can't emphasize enough how your feet change and you need to go to an expert rather than mindlessly self-diagnose and make a web purchase. It works that way for a lot of things in life. See an expert! read more

I had a frustrating experience here that I think people should know about. First, they do not clearly state upfront that their shoes are non-returnable. That's a big deal, because most reputable shoe stores actually encourage you to try shoes outside and return them if they don't work--especially since many manufacturers allow returns. That's usually a sign the store stands behind what they're selling. My experience with the staff was mixed. The first person who helped me didn't seem very knowledgeable. Then I was assisted by someone who seemed much more experienced and confident--but unfortunately, the advice I got was completely off. The shoes felt great at first, but within about 15 minutes of wearing them, I was in serious, searing foot pain. Only after that did I realize there was a strict no-return policy, which felt pretty unfair given the situation. I later went to another (small, independent) shoe store, and they were genuinely surprised by what had been recommended to me. They also couldn't understand why a store wouldn't offer returns, especially when manufacturers often support it. That store made it clear that allowing customers to properly test shoes is part of good service and customer care. I wouldn't say this place is terrible, but based on my experience, I wouldn't go back. I'd strongly caution others to be careful--some of the staff may sound knowledgeable, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the right advice, and without a return option, you're taking all the risk. read more

Excellent experience with MJ for running shoes, walking shoes, indoor sandals, and socks. I'd absolutely shop again

I love this they have a big selection of shoes I love I also like Nike too it has a lot of shoes

Don't be fooled by the name. It's not just a store for athletic shoes. In fact, "run" shoes only cover one wall. They carry every brand that I love to wear from the office to dinner, fully equipped with the orthotics, cork soles and arch support that my tired heel spurs and bunions from too many years of poor fitting stilettos crave. Birkenstock, Dansko, Taos, Clark's, Ecco, Sam Hubbard - all in one place. Staff is attentive and they definitely know the shoes well. Fantastic shoe store for people who crave both comfort and style. read more

This message is for everyone who suffers from plantar fasciitis! MJ is your go-to advisor! He possesses a wealth of knowledge and is eager to share it, so please take the time to listen to him fully. He evaluated my foot based on various metrics, including the width and shape of my foot base, the width of my heel, the type of instep I have, and whether I overpronate. He helped me understand that my injury could be linked to the type of shoes I need to wear as well as my anatomical structure. From there, he provided excellent recommendations. He took the time to listen, educate, and offer valuable advice. He also educated me on the type of shoes that I need to index on, the material that will help with my plantar fasciitis, and which brands to avoid (bye Nike, which in totally okay). Also, his recommendations were approved by my podiatrist Dr. Choe at Elevate Podiatry (small plug). read more

MJ was the best and most knowledgeable person you could meet. Don't wait until your feet hurt to go here and get great shoes.

Came across this store while visiting from NYC and if I had no other reason to be here, this store would still have made my trip worth it. Had stopped believing there was a pair of sneakers I could wear comfortably. So great to be walking without pain once again. read more

Tomak was amazing. I came in with relatively simple instructions from my doctor, but Tomak spent time with me, allowing me to efficiently try on a number of options that fit the criteria. I think we ended up on the very best option for me. So, so grateful I came in and the ease with which I ended up at the perfect shoe and not just a pretty good one. On top of this, Tomak mentioned that the hoka website was running a sale on these shoes, so he went ahead and researched it so he could price match (saving me over 30'%). One of my favorite stores in San Francisco! They have a fantastic selection of walking/running shoes, but what really stands out about On The Run is the service. MJ helped me out earlier this year and not only found me a great shoe, but really explained in depth what I should be looking for and what type of shoe best fits my walking style. I came back today and found another awesome pair of shoes with help from Michael. He was really friendly and helpful, and I'm beyond ecstatic for the pair of shoes I bought today. I suppose "anyone" can sell shoes/sneakers, BUT not anyone can deliver Good customer service. Without going into details, I purchased a pair of sneakers a few months ago and ended up Getting a wear and tear bruise on my toe due to a possible mis sizing of the width of the sneaker. They are out of "warranty " time. To make a possible long story short, they stood behind their products possibly mis sizing and fitted me with a new pair of sneakers ( a different brand), and made an exchange! Came in for a foot assessment as I have plantar fasciitis, and was in the market for a new pair of sneakers and insoles. Great service and selection of shoes! I've been experiencing pain from bunions, and my feet are on the wider side, so I wanted to find a store that specializes in good shoes. On the Run exceeded my expectations!! Daniel was extremely knowledgeable and analyzed my feet as I walked. He gave specific shoe recommendations that addressed concerns around stability, arches, wide toe box, and more. I got a pair of Hokas and New Balance shoes that felt so comfortable! My feet are extremely relieved. These shoes are on the pricier side, but the price is similar (if not the same) as the manufacturer's website. In my opinion, completely worth getting assessed by someone here to take care of your feet! Daniel also detailed the return policy as I was checking out, so it was clear that a return would result in store credit (no surprises here)! I didn't expect to wake up one morning and get taught from scratch how I should be putting on my shoes, taking them off, and tying my laces. I honestly couldn't thank him enough for his fantastic service, finding out what my issue was and explaining to me what/why it was happening as it's something that can be easily overlooked. He provided various shoes to try, finding my proper fitting and size(no where else has done this for me) and got me some new sneakers that has been 10/10. I've walked past On The Run countless times this past year, always debating whether to pick up a pair of Blundstone boots. I finally decided to step in--and I'm so glad I did! I went in expecting a quick, in-and-out purchase but left with not just incredibly comfortable shoes but also invaluable knowledge about foot health and proper support. The highlight of my visit was working with MJ Tamondong. MJ wasn't just a salesperson looking to make a quick sale; he provided a life-changing experience for me! He patiently asked questions to understand my stride and foot shape, helped me find the perfect shoe size and insoles, and even gave me tips on shoe care and lifespan. He even went above and beyond by offering to figure out insoles for the shoes I wore into the store. Thanks to MJ, I realized how much proper foot support can transform your comfort level--I thought my old shoes were "comfortable" until I experienced the difference! On The Run was a really great experience. Special shoutout to MJ who helped us out! My mom and I went in with the goal of getting her some comfy, supportive shoes to walk in. We special requested MJ since he helped my dad previously and my dad had a great experience as well. MJ was helping another client but right after he finished he started helping us right away. First he measured my mom's feet and got her the correct sizing (length and width are huge factors!). He got her multiple styles and was really knowledgeable about the shoes pros and cons. I was curious when he stepped away to know my shoe size so I started to measure my feet and he came back and ended up helping me out as well even though I made it clear I wasn't intending on buying anything. He helped us relace the shoes we were wearing to help us because he genuinely wanted us to have better support for our feet. MJ taught us about shoe sizing, support, correct lacing, etc. We definitely walked out knowing a lot more about the types of shoes we should be getting and my mom got herself a new pair of supportive walking shoes! The shoes weren't any more expensive than at any old store but the service we received was amazing. Totally worth the value :) read more

Timothy immediately helped me figure out what sneakers were best for my heel pain and long hours of walking and standing. He analyzed the shoe I wore, identified where my heel pain was, taught me how to make a runners loop, asked for color preference, and was well informed about each brand and sneaker prior to bringing out some pairs to try. He organized the sneakers from the least to most cushion, different widths, and was extremely receptive to my feedback. I learned a lot about my foot, each sneaker, and ended up purchasing the Asics Kayano 32 for ~$164.00 pre-tax. Lily helped me with my purchase, and was thorough about the stores return policy as a first time buyer. I visited On The Run because I was dealing with painful plantar fasciitis and needed shoes and inserts to help alleviate the pain. I don't need someone to just sugar coat it and to just make a sale. He really wants you to wear shoes that will work for you and help eliminate any pain. I left with a new pair of shoes and special orthopedic inserts. I will definitely come back. MJ is the man! I valued his input and definitely recommend this store and recommend his service. read more
