After many years of being disabled, I was able to regain my mobility last year through surgery. Now that I can walk again, that's all I want to do. Strap on my sneakers and walk, walk, walk. Unfortunately for my feet and back, my sneakers of choice are Converse. I have no less than 10 pairs, but not one of them is suitable for the type and volume of walking I'm doing now. I could have easily gone to a DSW or Foot Locker for walking shoes, but knowing myself I would have spun into a spiral of analysis paralysis, second-guessing, and doubt. Instead, I decided to visit On The Run, which I knew about from a former boss who was very particular about her footwear due to her own orthopedic issues. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by sales associate Rahnsom. He led me to a chair and began asking exploratory questions to get a sense of my needs. He took measurements and had me walk around a bit in my socks to see what my feet and ankles were doing. With this information he was able to immediately pull 4 shoes that fit perfectly. He helped me into each pair and had me walk around the store and go up and down a little hiking simulator to test how they felt. He chose very well. Out of the first three pairs, I could have easily walked out with two of them and been happy. Even the pair that I would have passed on was comfortable but a little too high for clumsy me. When I tried on the fourth pair, though, the Goldilocks in me knew that these shoes were just right. Regarding pricing, my particular pair of New Balance was $199. Coming from a Converse budget that may have seemed high, but I was determined to invest in my comfort and safety. Additionally, I place great value on the personalized service and information that Rahnsom provided. Had I gone to a "regular" retail store, I am certain I would have wasted money on the wrong shoe. For example, I had zero idea I was actually an 8 wide. I would have bought a size 9 shoe like I usually do then would have suffered - like I usually do - with a pair that was still too narrow in the front but with my heels moving up and down in the back as I walk. Out of curiosity I just checked online for prices elsewhere on my shoes and I consistently found them at $199. So, in my personal experience so far, On The Run isn't necessarily pricier than other stores. Even if it is, I can't put a price on being able to find the perfect shoe for my situation, in record time and with zero angst and indecision. read more

Tim Desoto openly mocked/disrespects other employees who loved this job and actually want to help others, and insults the customers (in the back room) he deems "to be the reason why he can't make money!" Management has known about this issue since early last year, and refuse to take any corrective action against him, putting me in a precarious position, because that is how not to conduct business. Some may think this post is about one person, but the truth is it's about you, the customer! Please don't be in a rush picking shoes, as not all of these salespeople are equal, and me having both my MS in Kinesiology and Management, not all of them have your best interests at heart! If the salesperson doesn't know how to help you, you could be paying more per visit or overtime! Read other reviews and know there is merit and weight behind some of them, and that the management (Sid Burger) has his moments saying things about customers that made me question his leadership. I have tried to work with the store to return the defective shoes and they refuse. They are saying i have to come in person which I am not willing to do as their staff is rude and disrespectful. I plan to send the shoes back. UPDATE I got in touch with the shoe company directly, and it turns out the salesman on the run sold me the entirely wrong size. After telling me, I was a 9.5 wide he sold me a 9.0. I had a frustrating experience here that I think people should know about. First, they do not clearly state upfront that their shoes are non-returnable. That's a big deal, because most reputable shoe stores actually encourage you to try shoes outside and return them if they don't work--especially since many manufacturers allow returns. That's usually a sign the store stands behind what they're selling. My experience with the staff was mixed. The first person who helped me didn't seem very knowledgeable. Then I was assisted by someone who seemed much more experienced and confident--but unfortunately, the advice I got was completely off. The shoes felt great at first, but within about 15 minutes of wearing them, I was in serious, searing foot pain. Only after that did I realize there was a strict no-return policy, which felt pretty unfair given the situation. First he measured my mom's feet and got her the correct sizing (length and width are huge factors!). He got her multiple styles and was really knowledgeable about the shoes pros and cons. I was curious when he stepped away to know my shoe size so I started to measure my feet and he came back and ended up helping me out as well even though I made it clear I wasn't intending on buying anything. He helped us relace the shoes we were wearing to help us because he genuinely wanted us to have better support for our feet. They will break down the importance of a good fit and then they'll grab an orthotic that fits your needs. Plan to be there for a minute, and do some walking or come in the afternoon so they can fit you after your feet swell up. The salesperson who helped me measured my feet and brought out three pairs of shoes for me to try. I ended up with a rather expensive pair of Hokas that's a whole size bigger than what I usually purchase, but the salesperson said it was a good fit for me. I've gone to them twice in the last few years and their help has been transformative. All the doctors and physical therapists I went to couldn't really figure out why my feet hurt SO much when walking or running. They went right into expensive orthotics and therapy sessions, suggesting ludicrous things like surgery and using a cane to walk. The good folks at On The Run looked at my foot and observed how I walked to provide me with insight as to what was going on and how my feet were behaving (dropped arch, high in-step, wide base). Once they helped me understand what was going on, and provided me with the proper footwear as well as very reasonably priced orthotics, which helped my foot get the support it needed, I started to get better. I spent 15+ years wondering why it hurt to walk (forget running) and was constantly disappointed with the medical system which charged me a bomb and did nothing for my recovery. On The Run is on the money. Don't hesitate, go to them first to get the proper footwear and learn from their amazing team on what to look for when buying shoes that are specifically suited to your feet. 'Nuff said. P.S. Wow! I came here probably 20 years ago when I was training for a marathon and was living in Cole Valley. My coach recommended this store to me. They were amazing and so knowledgeable about shoes and comfort. Fast forward to today, I no longer run marathons, but my husband and daughter had both been complaining about their shoes, and we just happen to be in the inner sunset after a long day of walking around the deYoung and GG Park. So I suggested we go in to just check things out. Then MJ Tamondong approached us. He wasn't the typical salesperson trying to push things on us, instead it was more like going to see a doctor who wanted to actually listen and figure out the best solution to whatever was the problem. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. My husband, my daughter and I all learned so much about shoes and our own feet (size, various things that were wrong about our shoes). I wasn't ready to buy new shoes, so he fashioned a makeshift insole for the shoes I had as well as gave me a free pair of socks, so I would feel special and cared for, since I wasn't buying new shoes and orthopedic insoles like my husband and daughter were. They both walked out, wearing their brand new shoes. To be honest, I was a little jealous that I didn't follow suit. The prices are comparable to other places as well. I know because I checked online when I got home and they were the same as on Amazon, but MJ's knowledge and expertise added so much more value to our shoes and overall shopping experience that no online store could ever give us.
