Acme BBQ was the Wedding Caterer & we were DISAPPOINTED! We had Acme BBQ cater our son's wedding the end of October and everyone was very disappointed. We were already dealing with an outdoor wedding and days of rain, but they should have arrived before the wedding started. I called to touch-base with them because they were there yet, and so they knew the wedding would have to be at the pergola (reception area) and not at the pond due to the rain. I even asked if they had forgot as they still were there 1:30p for a 2pm wedding. I was told did you check the contract and they only need to be there 30mins before. This is crazy for this type of event, and weather conditions. This means the wedding ceremony would be held where Acme was supposed to be setting up appetizers. Appetizers should be placed before the meal and should be set up so people could eat while photos are being taken. Instead no appetizers were out. I had people coming to be asking where the food was at, and this is at least 20mins after the wedding ceremony. Children were eating the desserts because the appetizers were not set up yet. The meal was late, roasted potatoes were raw that you could not even put a fork through, the green beans were mixed with cooked (army green) and uncooked (bright green), and the coleslaw was so bland (a slaw for pork sandwich and not a coleslaw with vinegar & sugar & seasoning). Their were also complaints that the pork was dry, but the brisket was good. I had other complaints that the baked beans were not out as they were going through the line for food when it was finally up. I spoke to Acme just before the cake cutting was about to commence bring to her attention that the potatoes were raw, but she tried to tell me they were cooked. I have 165+ guests at this wedding that can tell you differently. After the dessert was served I went to speak with Acme again, due to the numerous complaints, but they just left without speaking to us. I sent an email to Acme addressing these complaints, but never received a response. I could have even sent them a photo of all the potatoes in the garbage because no one could eat them. It was a wedding, a special day that this should have been handled professionally, setting up food a head, food that should have been seasoned, cooked properly, etc. They used our warming pans and apparently they forgot to bring water (using our water stored for coffee) and did not watch them causing five pans to be burnt and damaged. Such a disappointment from a caterer that was supposed to have experience and the amount of money that was paid (thousands). I am posting this review to let others know of the experience we received, and our disappointment of service & food before you make your decision for a Wedding Caterer. read more

I love good barbeque but there is more to it than just throwing cooked meat on a plate. Not a whole lot more to be fair, but...some. While it goes a long way to give me a lot of food, and I do appreciate that, having SO much food that I feel like I ordered for a small army makes me wonder how you can afford to give me so much meat without making me feel like I'm paying too much. And I didn't pay much, like $18. The personal sampler (that's what it's called) comes with a pile of meats, three meats, plus a quarter rack of ribs, plus two sides, and coleslaw or cornbread. To be clear, that's four total meats and three total sides. For $18. So the portions should be pretty small to get that many options for under $20. But no. I got a container of two meats, coleslaw and ribs that weighed maybe 3lbs. Then I got a side of fries that could feed 5, then a side container of more meat that weighed a pound for sure, plus a side of green beans (these were a normal sized portion maybe). So as I walked out encumbered with more meat than a small animal carries I wondered how good it could really be if they could afford to just give it away. The inside of this place is small, and every surface was covered with sticky bbq sauce of some variety, and replete with flies buzzing around the inside. Ew. The unhappy cashier took my order perfunctorily and I stood around waiting for a few minutes while they put it all together. When I made it outside with my meaty burden I sat down and did my best to make my way through as much as I good without feeling like I was over eating. The meat was all okay, unquestionably it was all too dry and overcooked. All four meats I tried, so it was not just one cut, it was all too dry. The ribs were okay. The fries okay. The green beans were really good, best part hands down. I'd get them again no question. Cooked in bacon grease I'm sure, but tasty as heck. The coleslaw was soaked in mayo, which was okay by me, and covered in celery seeds, so I liked it too. But the meat....soooo much meat. I threw nearly all of it away as it was just FAR too much food. I'd rather have higher quality, better cooked bbq, and smaller portions than what I got/experienced here. So yea...not worth recommending. read more

Was up in Williamsport to try a case. Couldn't head home due to the massive snow storm making the PA turnpike a nightmare. Spent the night and found this gem. Went with the "personal" sampler. I opted for the naked ribs, brisket, sausage, cornbread, collards and mac and cheese. These were all great choices. The naked ribs of course were without sauce. The ribs were solid - not the best I've had but solid. I'd get them again. Perhaps a tad more smokiness would push them over the top. Ahhh the brisket - perfection. Flavorful and tender. And then there was the sausage. Kudos to Acme for not shunning sausage like a lot of bbq places do. I had the spicy sausage and it was delicious. Let me say the "personal" sampler is really enough to feed two...or as in my case.... have plenty of leftovers to chow on while snowed in at the Holiday Inn drinking beer and watching Netflix. Ha. The sides were good too. The cornbread was nicely done and just a tad sweet which compliments the ribs well. The mac and cheese was just right and the collards...wow. BEST collards I've had from a bbq joint. For both those that eat in or carry out there are plenty of sauce bottles to use. I went with the blueberry infused sauce and the Carolina. Dog friendly!! I had the brisket sandwich with coleslaw and French fries. The brisket has wonderful smoke flavor but it was a little fatty. I wish they gave you the choice of lean or fat. The bread was good - very soft and fresh and tasted great. They have several choices of bbq sauce and I chose the Acme. It is tangy and sweet but not too sweet. Just right. It's not thick - more watery but amazing flavor. I dipped my sandwich in it every bite and it was really delicious. Very good coleslaw - the classic version, not too sweet with a little vinegar bite but not too much. I just loved the fries. They are medium sized - not shoestring and not too big either - and they are crisp on the outside and tender inside. Perfect seasoning. The fries were my favorite although the whole lunch was delightful. We sat on the patio because we had my dog Casey with us and the staff was super friendly to us and Casey. A staff member brought her water and a couple staff members stopped and chatted with us and petted her. It was really a pleasant and delicious lunch. Also they serve Coke, a plus. I vote on food so it's 4 stars and not 1. We ordered shortly before their very early 4 pm closing. It was an adventure. They were out of the sides we wanted of baked beans and corn bread. They had mac and cheese when we ordered. But, the kitchen assistant threw out all of the noodles for absolutely no reason, which upped the stress levels in a place stretched thin and getting a rush. Counter person is losing it and the cook is doing his job, the phones, and helping the girl put orders together and keeping the other two from completely falling apart. We ended up with fried potatoes as sides and a two hour drive before eating. Yuck. They were out of brisket and andouille and 3 of the sauces when we called. We left Acme with nothing we originally wanted. I wanted to pull the chute but went with understanding it's hard to get good people and product right now. Got a pulled pork sandwich and a smoked sausage between us and 4 different sauces. I'm telling you that the meat and sauces were so damn good I found a way to give one of the worst ordering and pick up experiences I've ever had 4 stars. Pork was barked, Smokey, juicy, and tender. The sauces were all distinct and balanced. The sausage was perfect. We're looking forward to going back to Acme. We're definitely closer to opening time than closing time though!! read more

I have had BBQ in probably 100 place in all the famous BBQ states (TX, MO, TN, NC), including some featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives", but this place has them all beat for flavor per dollar. The ribs are absolutely terrific without sauce but are just as good with your choice of sauce. Baked means are the real homemade deal and only leave you wanting more. And how in high heaven does a BBQ joint not have cornbread? This place has some of the moistest real corn bread you will ever eat. I am not a brisket or pulled pork fanatic, but when I am in the mood, I chow down on these dishes and they leave an impression that has me longing for more for several weeks thereafter. I'm not sure if I messed up my order or Pennsylvania BBQ just generally comes out plain but there was no BBQ sauce or spices of any kind. The pulled pork and brisket were both cooked well, they were just completely plain. Luckily I was on my way home and got the order to go so when I got home I added my favorite BBQ sauce myself. The baked beans were okay. And the bbq eggroll, i forget what they call it...A pig roll or something. It was a bit oily but not bad. I would get it again. I would go back but I would have to make sure to bring my own sauce if i ate at the location so i'll be sure to just always get it to go on my way home. Staff seemed okay and the food was ready fast. I think I can safely say that I have tried a lot of BBQ in my travels. From Tennessee BBQ to SC, NC to Texas BBQ. I have had a lot. So it surprises me to find a BBQ place in the middle of PA. It was very unexpected when I saw it listed close my hotel. I had to try to see whether it sizes up to southern BBQ. I ordered ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. For sides - the mac and cheese and spicy green beans. I had to balance out all that meat! The portions are quite large. A platter can last at least 2 meals. You can get the ribs naked or with BBQ sauce. I ordered them naked to see how they would taste without all that sauce drenched. There were many sauces to choose from. The original ACME house bbq was my favorite. The ribs were spicy I have to say. It is a bit dry without the sauce. The brisket was not as juicy as I expected but okay. I did enjoy the mac and cheese and spicy green beans. They were the highlight. The pulled pork was also a bit dry was okay. For the middle of PA, this was a decent place. However, I am afraid to say it does not match that of true southern BBQ. read more

On my goal to 500 bbq reviews stopped in Acme.. had the combo of naked ribs, pulled pork, burnt ends with cornbread and slaw. Tiny indoor dining area but nice patio out back..pulled pork was moist with a mixture of bark and perfectly rendered meat. ( my personal opinion I look to see if it stands by itself without sauce) unfortunately really needed more seasoning and smoke addition of one of the 6 sauces made it pretty tasty and with the slaw would make a good pulled pork sandwich. Bunt ends were a disappointment and were more like leftover flat that had been cubed and cooked two long in sauce . Probably one of first times in hundreds I left burnt ends in a plate. Ribs were baby backs and cooked perfectly with just salt and pepper as a rub. I know I am a bbq snob but a real bbq joint should have spareribs and preferably St. Louis cut. Bottom line would stop by and try chicken and brisket if back in the area but pitmaster needs to work on his game. Decent for northern bbq but not up to Tx, KC, Or TN standards. read more

They have excellent BBQ and sides. I love the naked ribs. You don't need sauce if they are done right, like these. The sauces are all in-house and a good variety. I love the white sauce on turkey. The beans and greens are excellent. I judge a BBQ joint by the love put into the sides and ACME does it right. Seating is sparse and minimal. You can park and sit behind the building which may not be obvious. It would be nice to see them cut down on disposables. It's so not green. read more

Buddy brought some down from Williamsport to try and super stoked he did. The brisket had a perfect smokey flavor without it being fake. Nice and tender, melt in your mouth! Mac n cheese was pretty dang good, but the baked beans stole the show. We're talking thick and hearty baked beans with tons of flavor. I admit I'm a Barbeque snob! I've had real Texas bbq and my husband is a smoke master. So when we choose a bbq joint I'm usually really disappointed. But ACME was awesome! Great smoke flavor, not too heavy or overpowering. The quality of the meat was evident and the dry rub was light but flavorful. We ordered the sampler plate with ribs, andouille and brisket, spicy green beans and fried potato salad and cornbread. I also ordered the collard greens because that's what southerns do, and one order of a pig roll (egg roll with shredded pork and coleslaw). Everything we ate was 5 star excellent! Our first time to Pennsylvania we were craving some bbq and this place was down the street from our hotel. If I could give 0 stars i would. Customer service here is horrible. Food taste like it was made yesterday and they warmed it up in the microwave and put some bbq sauce on. Also the wings were so over cooked it taste like rubber. Big portions for reasonable prices. We weren't expecting to get as much food as we did but were pleasantly surprised. The pulled pork was cooked perfectly but was plain which I thought was a bit strange for a BBQ place. However you could put whatever sauce you wanted on it (limited selection on those - at least when we stopped by for lunch). Highly recommend the Mac N' Cheese and coleslaw. Note: I am now a professional chef. I will only do reviews of places within my geographic area if I sincerely believe in their food. I won't use Yelp to be a d*** to competitors. Ok, this gets five stars for the dozen or so times I have been. (Most recent visit was four star... but I won't succumb to recency bias). I cook with live fire at home and as a chef. This is one of my favorite places to visit because from the manifesto to the food to the sauces, it is full of soul. I tend to judge a BBQ place by its sides FIRST. If the sides are good, it is usually an indicator that the mains will be. The beans are spicy and mixed variety. I love that. Good smoke flavor. The collard greens are smooth and flavorful. They do a "deep fried potato" salad which is different and not as greasy as it sounds- they make potato salad with fired potatos. THe green beans are innovative and shine- they are like Szechuan green beans with some bacon love on top. In fact, it is the one side they do to order. These are the ones I get most often. Corn bread is ok. Too sweet and cakey for me, but that is a regional thing. My favorite meats are the ribs and the TURKEY (correction) I like them together because I get good contrast. The dry ribs are excellent dry (with their house rub). I like them this way so I can meditate on the layers of smoke, meat, fat, and spice before I add the complexity of sauces. To me, delicious dry ribs is a hallmark of craftmanship and soul. The pulled TURKEY is always free of gristle and such. It is usually a good balance of moisture and smoke. I love it with the yellow mustard sauce or the white sauce. The pulled pork is excellent. I don't like the sausage and brisket as much. I just don't get into brisket much, so disregard me on this. The sausage seems to be a little dry to me. I recently tried the roasted chicken wings. I loved them. Like the ribs, they are excellent dry and that way you can engage in a sauce-exploration expedition. Sauces. Their house is a good balance of sweet, salt, and a little heat. All of the sauces are outstanding. I discovered the white sauce there- it is a thin mayonnaise sauce with lots of pepper and I think paprika. EXCELLENT on lighter meats like the chicken. The chipotle one carries good heat if you like to have smoke out your ears. They have traditional NC vinegar (good on pulled pork). They also have smaller batch unusual ones like a fruit bluenerry sauce. I like the adventureness of it. Service. Direct, pleasant, and no frills. They all look like nice, inked hipster-types who believe in the mission of the place. Ambience. Outside in the back is ok. It is all-concrete, so you can bake in heat. Inside is cozy and comfy. Great for take-out, but you should call ahead. I wish they would do the following. 1) Explore more sustainable packaging for take out. 2) Add house-made drinks like lemonade. 3) Start to innovate the menu some. I don't think it has changed in years. The founders/exec chef have the stuff to do more great food. 4) Add a branch in Lewisburg. Except, not, as it would compete with me, maybe. read more

I can't believe this place hasn't been Yelped! Acme is a sight for sore eyes in Williamsport. The atmosphere is simple and modern (think the barbecue version of Chipotle). What I particularly like about Acme is that the simple a la carte menu makes it easy to order based on how hungry one is--from a single slider to a rack of ribs. Sauces are great. Purists can go for the barbecue. Last I checked they had seven to choose from. For a first visit, I'd suggest getting a few sliders and several sauces to sample. The service can be lukewarm, and the outdoor seating area needs a little attention (kinda like eating in an alleyway), but can't really complain. read more

Finally made it here. Ordered take-out, the dining space inside is a little tight. Make sure you get sauce if you order take-out, they had to-go cups ready for me. Went with the pulled pork which was great. I tried the "Sweet Heat" sauce which was fantastic and also the "Spicy Vinegar" which was okay. As far as sides, the spicy green beans were okay but a little salty and soggy. The fried potato salad was okay as well, I was hoping the potatoes would be a little crispier. Cole slaw was good. Ah-mazing. Best BBQ in the area, by far. I eat here probably every other week. The place is very small and "hole-in-the-wall". In nice weather they have a patio, but don't expect to find a lot of seating most days. I always get it to go. Their smoked chicken is fall off the bone, to die for. Ribs are also excellent. All the sides are good or great. The only side that is a bit of a let down, in my opinion, is the mac and cheese. I would like to see them put more of a spin on it... maybe add some heat, and more kinds of cheese for a richer flavor. I would also love to see fried okra as a side, but I'm probably the only one. Lots of sauces, so try a bit of everything. All homemade! My favorite is the white sauce, for chicken. Prices are very good, especially for BBQ. Service is VERY fast, and friendly. read more
