The best place in Reno for computer parts. I have two laptops and they need very specific chargers. I had one stolen over seas, why someone would take it, no idea. My dell inspiration 5000 17.3 inch needed a new charger. I went to Best Buy where the chargers ranged from 50-70 dollars and none worked that they had. They sent me to batteries plus, whom also didn't have the correct port due to being to new model laptop. Then they sent me to me moondog. They had the charger I needed for 19.5 volts and it was only 35 bucks! Plus I got to look at a bunch of cool towers and fans as well as everything else you can think of for computers. They have had his location for about 3 years and have been in business over a decade. This is the go to in Reno when you need a laptop charger asap. They have so many unique items and their prices are better than bestbuy and batteries plus, and they actually know what they are doing. There are few actual "mom-and-pop" computer stores left in Reno/Sparks. Moondog is hanging in there but their prices make it hard to justify. I recently needed some thermal grease to reattach a cooler to a CPU. They had Arctic Silver 5 for $12. It's available online for $5 but I needed it then. I'd rather support a local store than Best Buy or Office Depot but they need to work on their customer service and lower their prices to remain relevant. These guys are awesome. I recently had them do a rebuild of my current gaming PC and also perform an overclock of the processor. I upgraded from an older i7 950 up to a i7 4770K. The different chipsets also required that I get a new motherboard. I consider myself fairly tech savvy, but I wanted someone with the technical know how to do it right, and also overclock the processor which I'm too intimidated and lazy haha to learn. I took my gaming PC down to moondog and not only were they super helpful and courteous, they got everything done in a very timely manner. I'm glad I went to them. I bought a new ASUS laptop for AutoCAD work on the go. Not knowing to much about computers, I've had to rely on advise from Amazon and friends for recommendations. I'm super happy with my purchase, except the Samsung SSD 850 EVO secondary drive I bought didn't come with the M2x3 set screw... Very frustrated I tried multiple places for this tiny tiny screw that is holding me back. Well Matt and Vince not only had tried screw, but also gave me detailed instructions on how to shift my operating system and documents to the new drive... For FREE! These guys have been around a long time, and I appreciate their help! If I can not figure it out on my own, I'll bring it back and pay the $99 to have it done professionally. My husband doesn't Yelp, FB, Tweet, etc. So I thought I would Yelp for him. He had a problem with his computer, went to several places to find a certain part. Moondog had it and he purchased it. (Reason for atleast 3 stars). When he walked out to his car, it wouldn't start, so he had to wait for me. In the meantime, he needed to use the restroom and walked back in to ask if he could use theirs. The employee was so incredibly rude,"Its not for the public" He explained that his car wouldnt start, it was cold outside and he was a customer. The employee couldnt even look at him and pleasantly deny him, he was rude! My husband had to walk up to Jack-in-the-box in the snow... Really? I am very upset with my recent visit to moondog computers, I had recently asked if they would test my motherboard for me, a task that takes less than 5 minuets, but they wanted ME TO PAY THEM $50 to do it!!! I could install liquid cooling in my computer for that price! Or buy fallout four !!! I also noticed that they said they would upgrade your computer from windows 7/8 to windows 10 for "only $100" , for those who don't know, currently WINDOWS 10 IS A FREE UPGRADE!!! NOT $100!!! This is incredibly selfish, they are ripping people off and reaping the rewards of fooling the ignorant. PLEASE DO NOT BUT FROM MOONDOG COMPUTERS, buy your parts online, they mark their parts up as much 50% higher than online. I purchased a wireless card for my desktop. It did not work with the computer, not the cards fault. I took it back for an exchange or store credit, I was going to upgrade to an N card for another computer. They would not do it because it was past a week, their return policy limit. Not only did they lose a bigger sale but all my business. I decided to use this card in the other computer to upgrade the five year old card. Did not work properly after spending time setting it up. I found a gold mine of a computer place. They have helped me at no cost. Amazing place I never knew was there. I upgraded my touchscreen and lost the ability to use it. When I asked them about it, they said to download the driver. Went home, 5 minutes later...I had my touchscreen back. All the 'back yard' computer people told me it just wasn't compatible. These guys were great, even if they couldn't fix my laptop. My 4 year old Gateway suddenly stopped connecting to its charger a couple of weeks ago. I initially took it to Used Computer Warehouse a few miles south on Virginia of Moondog. It was there for two days and when I finally called them, it was clear that they hadn't even looked at the laptop. I called Geek Squad out of sheer desperation (I'm a student and NEED my laptop to work) and the man I spoke to recommended Moondog. I was able to drop my laptop off there that day and the possible issue was explained to me thoroughly. The guy who took my laptop explained the fees ($175 if they could fix it. $99 if they couldn't or if the problem was simpler than initially thought) and told me that there was a high probability that my laptop could be fixed. A little over a week after I dropped it off, I got the call and unfortunately my laptop's motherboard was toast. When I went to pick it up, the lady who handled the final transaction told me about my options, such as saving the hard drive, and also printed up the information for a couple of replacement laptops that they could order for me. She even lowered the final cost of the service to $49. My experience with these guys was great and I will definitely be buying a new laptop from them. I highly recommend this place. read more

These guys got one star because Yelp doesn't have a half star. First of all, I've never seen a customer service based business where the staff is so obviously annoyed when they have to help a customer. When I walked into their store with my broken computer the two guys behind the counter ignored me for several minutes after seeing me walk in, they were busy talking about some game they had been playing online. Finally, one of them audibly sighed and resigned himself to helping me with the opening statement "You need something?" I said yes, I was having problems with my computer. Instead of asking me what was wrong with it he said "that's going to be a $40 diagnostic fee." He barely wanted to know what the symptoms of my computer problems were (The computer was shutting itself off abruptly). This was on a Wednesday and they said they wouldn't be able to look at it until Monday. As Han Solo would say "I had a bad feeling about this." Needless to say I didn't here back from them for a week and when I called on the following Wednesday they still hadn't had a chance to look at it and said they would that evening. The following day they actually did call me back and told me there was nothing wrong with the computer...but still charged me the diagnostic fee. I got the computer home and had it on for a couple of hours and what do you know? It abruptly shut off just as it had before. I took it to another shop in town where the computer guy actually listened to my problem and immediately diagnosed that I probably had a power supply problem. Do not give these guys your business! After telling others my story I heard many others had had the same horrible experience...I can't believe this is the first review they have received on Yelp...I will never go back. read more

Long story short, it took Matt about 2 hours from the time we dropped the laptop off until he was done replacing the screen. The previous place had the computer for 12 days and still didn't get it right - AND, they expected us to pay for their guesswork. Found this to be one of the only dedicated computer parts store in Reno, and they definitely take advantage of that position for profit. Walked in last week to purchase a new GPU that was $150-$160 online and at Best Buy. The exact same part was at the shop for $220. Also asked for a 500GB hard drive, was told that they only carried a 1TB or 2TB model, and was immediately told "the difference between a 500gb and 1TB is $20." Even though he is correct in some scenarios, this does not justify that their 1TB was about 100+ dollars, when there are 1TB hard drives for $50-70 online. I asked why the graphics card was so expensive and was told "it's the extreme gaming edition." This kind of buzzword heavy talk is exploitative as "extreme gaming edition" does not justify specifications. It does not explain core clock, overclock speeds, or any other aspect of the card other than what it is branded as. The elderly man clearly did not know much about computers but attempted anyways to explain their PC builds like he does. This is the type of store to take advantage of the technologically ignorant, as previously stated in earlier reviews by other customers. DO NOT purchase parts at this location as they can mark up their prices as much as 50% and up. Please just order them online or go to Best Buy as you will find the correct prices for items there. You will most likely be bombarded with fancy tech words in an attempt to drain your wallet here. read more

This has been the best place I have found to deal with my computer issues in the 3 years I have lived in this area.

We first took our computer here because it was having issues starting up... we payed a decent sum for them to "fix" it and it was promptly returned... The next week the issues started again but were even worse! They tried to charge us even though it was clear they hadn't fixed it in the first place. They finally agreed to deduct SOME off the bill. The guy informed us he CLEARED the ENTIRE computer but had kept all of our files in a backup file... When we got home the backup files did NOT open at all.. we took it back down only for them to tell us that they were "under the impression" that we were going to load everything back on and we would have to get all of our programs CD's and install them. We had tons of expensive computer art programs, games, drawing tablets ect... on that computer and now I have to go find ALL the CD's, serial codes ect.. because they backed up the files wrong and don't want to admit it. read more

I dropped my computer off at Moondog on Saturday, July 20. I was told that they would look at it on Monday, July 22, and give me a call. I didn't hear anything for a few days, so I called on Thursday, July 26th. I was told that they were waiting for a quote from Dell for a new motherboard. I was told I would get a call back that day, or the following morning, at the latest. Of course, I heard nothing. On Monday, July 29, I called again. I was told they still didn't have any information, and the owner was the only one who could help, and she wasn't in. I left a message asking for her to give me a call. Guess what? No call. On Thursday, August 1st, I call again. I am told there is still no information, but the owner would be in at 3:30, and I could call and talk to her then. I asked that they also leave her a message for me. At just about 4:00, I call again. Apparently my message was taken from her desk, so they assume she has seen it, but still no call. My computer has been there for almost 2 weeks, and I can't seem to get a price on how much it will take to fix it. I would prefer not to have to pick it up to take it somewhere else. I just really want it to be fixed.. :/ Very frustrating. I wouldn't recommend this store to anyone. read more
