My Birthday was in February. I failed to use my Birthday coupon during the month of February but did make a purchase. I called and they would not honor the coupon after the expiration date. I bought a new $280 Stihl Chainsaw on July 16th at ACE hardware in Grayslake, IL. I have owned Stihl's in the past and had great experience, but my experience this time was very different. The saw was started in the store (using Stihl 50:1 gas as indicated in the owners manual) for about 3-5 secs to assure it would start, but when i got it home and started and ran it for more than a few secs - it smoked profusely (still using the fuel added from the store) so i shut it off. I reviewed the manual again to make sure there wasn't something new to this particular chainsaw i was missing and realized i was doing everything correctly. A few days later, I started it again and let it run for a while (still probably less than a min) and it continued to smoke profusely. I tried to rev the engine and move the chain, but the chain brake was stuck and the chain could not move at all. I took it back to ACE as per their 30 day return policy and they required an investigation by their technicians and an effort to fix it. When the cover was removed, the plastic chasse was melting from the heat (cause of the smoke) and keeping the brake from opening. The specialist who was familiar with saw recognized this was a problem with the saw, but the manager insisted that they investigate to see if this was my fault or someone in the stores fault before anything could be resolved. This is obviously a fault of the saw, but i am now 9 days without a functioning saw - after paying $280 dollars for a new one - and will be waiting for some time to get anything that works. I have been a faithful Stihl and ACE customer, but i will likely never buy another tool from ACE because of the way they handled this without consideration of impact to their customer. They are more concerned with finding someone to blame than resolving the obvious issue for their customer! read more

The younger folks working there are nice but the older lady working at the register is as rude as they come, as is the older guy working the floor. Snap at you when you ask a question, act like they can't be bothered, if you can find any help. Lot of their stock is old, so buy with caution...that equipment you buy might be from the Reagan era. read more

I went into the Grayslake Ace , my car key was broken. To my surprise with bringing my valet key , I was not only surprised they had a new casing and was able to create a new key they ordered me a brand new key. Not only did I save hundreds of dollars on my key versa the almost $400 cost of the dealership. A gentleman named, Arcadio, helped with all of this and even made certain all keys were programmed correctly. When it comes to helpful hardware stores, Ace takes 1st place! When you walk in, you usually get someone waiting and willing to help you which is a change from going to this bigger chains where the associates scatter when a customer is looking for help. They are very knowledgable and customer 1st oriented which is a rarity in any business now a days. Even the cashiers are pleasant and seem to enjoy being there. Service with a smile goes a long way. One of my favorite hardware stores- the people are truly helpful and its a pleasure to shop in this clean and well organized store. I had the chance to use their window repair service to purchase a piece of cut window glass to repair a storm window that was broken over the summer. The glass that I purchased was neatly wrapped in butcher-style paper to make it easy to transport, and it was exactly the right size when I got it home to install in its frame. To say that I was happy to get this project done, and done right before winter is an understatement. This location also does small engine repairs with an estimate service before the repairs begin. More and more I find myself coming to this Ace Hardware store and each time I go into the Home Depot I'm persuaded even more to come here. Why, you may ask. I find here (and other Ace Stores) that the staff is willing to help you out as much as they can and not simply give you a half asses answer just so they can continue on with the conversation with another co-worker. Granted, Ace may not have the extended lumber, home exterior or such items carried by the big orange box place... but Ace does still have that neighborhood store type of feel. Not only does the staff go out of their way, but Ace does have a few items which Home Depot does not offer or is limited. For instance, at Ace the nuts and bolts and various fasteners is in my opinion better. I also like the fact that you can get sheets of plastic cut to size and even better, they can re-do your screens at very reasonable prices. I've also found their garden items, such as fertilizer, seeds, sprays and what not cheaper. The bird-food, houses, feeders is also comparatively prices and I think a slightly better selection. Granted, the old time hardware stores complete with wooden floors are all but gone and in my view, Ace is the modern day vestige of the neighborhood hardware store and just assume give them my business over the big orange depot place. read more

The cashier situation at this store is dubious, sloppy and poorly managed. Don't pay in cash at this store! Had a cashier issue and management was so rude and dogmatic about it. I agree with the poor review done by women with screen repair. Though a totally different issue, I was treated the same way. We recently purchased a lawn mower, patio swing, and several plants from this Ace. James knew a lot about different lawn mowers and gave us a tutorial on the one we purchased. Meg told me about the patio swing and the delivery service available. Not only did they deliver it but saved my husband and me a big headache because Danny put it together. I love my new dark brown patio swing. Since I am quick to write when service is slow, I would like to say we received good service. I will preface my review by saying that I have been a customer of this store for years and have gone here for things you just cant find anywhere else (fasteners, bolts and hardware etc...). I work for a customer focused organization and deal with the public every day, dealing with something far more sensative than hardware. I am apalled at the level of customer service provided by this store now and the way that management handles customer concerns and "Terry", the store manager, has no business working retail or any service job where he comes into contact with the public. *********************************** I had dropped off a screen from one of our windows to be repaired. I know that I could have easily done this myself, but I was in the midst of getting married and it was easier to let Ace repair it, I didn't mind the cost. I was told the approximate price would be $40. I was given a claim tag and was told it would take a week or so, that they were very backlogged (this was back in August). I called in mid September to ask about the status as we had not yet received a call. I was told that they were very backlogged and that they would call me once it was completed. I did not receive a phone call until October 10th letting me know that the screen was repaired. When I went to pick it up, I was not greeted by anyone and walked to the back of the store where the repair area is. The guy back in the repair area found my screen and made an off the cuff comment about how it must have been a rookie that repaired it because it wasn't as tight as could be nor did he place the "special tag" that lets them know the customer was called to let them know it was completed. I laughed, knowing that it's been sitting there for a month. I walked to the front of the store where I waited in line for approximately 8 minutes. There was one cash lane open and one cashier, approximately 5 customers. When I got to the cashier I was told the total would be obver $60. I explained to the cashier that the information I was originally given was in conflict with that number and asked to speak with the manager. Terry, whom I was told was the main store manager (whom is only below the store owner) came to the cash register. I was immediately given an attitude before I could even finish explaining my situation. I was told that "He was not going to fight with me and if I want to take my screen the total would be $60). I explained in a louder tone of voice so that I was able to get a comment in between this manager yelling across three cash lanes and amongst the three or four other customers that were now standing witnessing the manager being extremely unprofessional, that the screen had a 4" tear in it and one of the pieces of the frame had been bent. Why they had decided to replace the entire frame, without my consent or approval to exceed the original estimate was THEIR fault and that I would be happy to pay what I was originally quoted. He let out a loud sigh, rolled his eyes, came over and began to measure the screen and then abruptly left to head to the back of the store. He returned with the binder of information that provides procing based on screen sizes. When he calculated the total, it was $37 plus $2 for the bent frame rail, $39 plus tax total (or what I should have paid to begin with). I explained that it was fine, I would pay the $39 and would be on my way. I asked for the district manager information and his response was "I'm not going to give you that information and you can leave." I continued the volley back and forth demanding this information and he rejected while other customers were standing watching. As he finally walked away after beginning to ignore me, one of the cashiers finally said "You can talk with Kathy, she's the store owner." Well you know what? I WILL be speaking with Kathy and providing a copy of this review. This was the worst customer experience I have had in any retail store I think EVER. This guy has no business working in a retail organization and should be reprimanded. If you don't want to do your job the correct way, quit. There are probably many others who could do your job BETTER and would appreciate the fact tha customers are coming in and spending money keeping this store open. If we did not come in, you would be closed... we would go to home depot and lowes. Don't waste your money here. They do not care about the customer and when there is an issue, they tell you as the customer that YOU are wrong. read more

The review says A-OK, but I would say just OK. The other day, I went in for some panes of glass. The floor and service desk staff were very helpful. The checkout clerk was rude. Mono-syllabic questions. Scolded me for trying to take my rolly basket out, and had not advised me earlier that those set off the alarm out the door. I had not even gotten my stuff off the counter before she was shoving the next guy's stuff on. Another time, I went back 1 hour later with a return with my original card that I did the purchase on, and was required to give a lot of personal info for a $10 easy return. But, the floor staff can be helpful, and they have some things you can't get elsewhere. read more

There's nothing NOT to love about this store and their staff! It's immaculate and well organized; it's always easy to find a floor staff member if you need assistance, although that's rare because 99.9% of the time a staff member asks if I need help with anything. If I do need help, no one tells me which aisle it's in, they take me to exactly what I'm I'm looking for and ask if I have questions or need help with anything else. Everyone is usually pretty knowledgeable about all the items in the store, but if they aren't 100% sure, they radio for someone who is. I often ask for Kara (sp?) because she's very knowledgeable, a lot of fun, and I've learned to ask her if what I 'think' I want is really what I need. She's great at showing me other options and explaining why they might work better for me. Every time I'd be at the store I always looked at the paint cans that people decided they didn't want after they were mixed. Long story short, I was fortunate that the young lady who'd been helping me had a few gallons in neutral colors that a customer had just returned because he'd changed his mind after they'd been mixed. They were perfect for what I needed and greatly discounted. The young lady wrote down my name and number just in case other similar colors got returned. She called me about a week later to say they'd gotten in a number of returned gallons with neutral colors, asking if I wanted to look at them. Oh my gosh, I really wish I could remember her name - she had the patience of a saint! The colors weren't that different from each other, but I was being 'neurotic' about them. She had me tell her the size of each room, and marked cans with '2nd bedroom walls', 2nd bedroom ceiling', and continued to do the same with each room in my house! The cashiers are great...always have a smile on their faces and ask if I found everything okay. They don't act like 'robots', they seem to really want to make sure I'm satisfied with my visit and experience. When I need help putting something in my car someone is almost always available immediately, and ask where I want the items put in my car. And all the staff always say 'have a good day!'. Actually all the staff is great - helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, upbeat - I feel so comfortable there! Some people think Ace prices are a little too high, but I wouldn't want to go to another store just to possibly save a few dollars. And I've actually gotten some great items at unbelievable prices during their sales and/or 'managers specials'! When I walk into 'my' Ace I have confidence knowing the staff is well-educated about their products, they take the time to help me find what I'm looking for and take me to that location - not just tell me which aisle it might be in. They have a LOT of 'specialty' items other stores don't, they help me compare ingredients or products, and they don't walk away until they're sure I have what I was looking for.
