What a hidden gem! I stopped by  Ace Hardware on a whim to pick up some soil--usually, I default to the big box stores like Home Depot, but I'm so glad I gave this place a shot. I was in and out for soil... or so I thought. I ended up stumbling across their clearance section, and let me tell you--it's a goldmine. They had lighting and other household gear marked down to 60% off retail. I scored four awesome headlamps for a fraction of the price. It's not something I planned for, but I'm definitely not mad about it. I believe it was Bill or Phil who helped me out--he was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I asked about grow lights, and not only did he make a solid recommendation, but he also walked me over to the right section. That kind of personal service is rare these days, and it left a great impression. One thing I noticed, though, was that the older staff members were genuinely friendly and helpful. They greeted me, engaged in conversation, and seemed to take pride in being there. In contrast, the younger staff felt a little checked out... not rude, but they were kind of low energy and not particularly invested. This is not a dealbreaker, but it is worth mentioning. The fantastic selection of hidden deals, and some of the best soil prices I've seen in town. It's clear that this Ace cares about its regulars and offers value that goes beyond convenience. Most friendly staff and superior service ! I just was shopping a patio set and was planning to bring it home myself (saving the usually $40 delivery fee). The friendly manager asked me where I live (like 2-3 miles away) and then offered to drop it off for free. Even in the next half hour. What a nice neighborhood store ! This is one of the Laskowski owned Ace stores in the northern Illinois suburbs. I came to this store for a few quick cleaning products. The minute I entered I was greeted by an associate named Patrick who introduced himself and asked if I needed any help. The ladies at the front counter were equally as pleasant. Friendly and helpful. Real friendly and real helpful. I ordered a wheelbarrow off the internet. Picking it up, they asked if I wanted it assembled or unassembled. No charge for assembly! Friendly! I've stopped in for garden supplies and small items such as an ice cube tray. So? In this huge store, each employee knew exactly where the item was and the variety available. This is the most excellent retailer for at least 30 miles in every direction. Convenience, availability, super-helpful staff, everything you need put in stock 3 months before you know you need it. I would tell every store: if you want to train your employees in good customer service, then send them to work at Libertyville Ace for a few months and then have them come back to their intended employer. read more

I like shopping at Ace Hardwares, but this one had a fairly unfriendly staff. Professional, helpful, but not friendly.

This store has only become more expensive and they were already expensive. We used to prefer shopping here over the big box stores, but it has become impossible to do so. They have changed their selection, and quality, of merchandise, of course not for the better... used to have the best selection of paints. Now they only have Rust-o-leum and a house brand which is likely also Rust-o-Leum w/o their branding. used to have a good, varied, high quality selection of nuts, bolts, screws, but this has also been cheapened down to a lower quality brand and few choices. Unfortunately, as much as we would like to support this 'quasi-neighborhood' store they no longer make it easy, sensible, or frugal to do so. Good luck. You're gonna need it. read more

We were getting donuts from the Little Red Donut Truck and the workers there set up seats, tents, and gave out free water to the people waiting in line. It was very nice of them to do that in this extreme heat! read more

Once upon a time, two city mice ventured out into the suburbs. We needed some space to work on framing our artwork, and one of the city mice's parents were out of town. Several days of framing mayhem by semi-professionals (i.e. us) resulted in several pieces of broken glass, a few teary eyes, a few panic attacks, and one brilliant idea. ACE. We needed glass cut to size, and fast. Unlike corporate giant mega monster, Home Depot, Ace cuts glass and plexi still. Better yet, the friendly glass cutter man at Ace who cut our glass did a great job, and when I tried to pay him, he told me to put a few dollars in the charity donation jar for a children's hospital. He saved our lives and he loves the little children. Ace also has an amazing red tinsel Christmas tree whose tackiness calls to me in the worst way. Maybe I'll come buy it. read more

I made a special trip to this store thinking they had superior customer service and inventory. Boy was I mistaken. I requested help in the electrical area and was told to wait in isle 51 for help to arrive. After 10 minutes I gave up and bought a few unrelated items. The lady who checked me out asked if I wanted to donate to Red Cross. When I declined, she became sullen, snippy and rude. Of course, on this New Years day with 10" of snow, our snowblower wouldn't start. I hadn't run it for two years. I took it over to the Ace Hardware in Libertyville, thinking I'd drop it off and have it tuned up (after three years of no maintenance). I was expecting a 2-3 week period with out the snowblower, which is a bummer in January. But then Richie rolled it back behind the drop-off counter, looked at it, considered the cause, pulled the spark plug and put in a new one... voila! It now runs fine, and they charged me only for a new spark plug ($4). I'm an idiot, but these guys are FANTASTIC! Saved me a $100 tune-up as well as 3 weeks of shoveling by hand! read more

In general I prefer to go to smaller hardware stores if I can help it. This one is the closest to my house and fits the bill of offering personal service. When I am here I always get the help I need, despite the endless number of aisles the staff seem to know where everything is located. Last time I was in this store, the sales associate kept coming back to me with more options to solve my building issues. He never gave up. I later found out that it was his first week on the job. I was impressed by his desire to help me find the best solutions. Some of his suggestions were outside the box of regular thinking but it honestly helped me. On August 16, 2014 I called asking if they had a receipt/invoice book. They said they did and then we hung up. I went there within a half hour, and the sales associate at the front was so kind. When I walked in, I asked her where the receipt/invoice books were. She said "are you the one that called a little bit ago? I have it right here at the register". How awesome is that?!
