We're in the thick of a bunch of home improvement projects as we gear up to move into our home. While we can count on Menards to have things we need to do these projects, with endless options of light fixtures, light bulbs, faucets and more the options are rather limited. We recently came by in the need of a medium size crow bar to remove some flooring and when we looked they had a super tiny one or a really large one. When we asked for help to see if we were just missing a potential location to look the staff was a bit stand off ish and said we can just walk around and look to see if we can find what we are looking for. We ended up actually walking around thinking we missed a big section of crow bars but those were actually the only 2 sizes they carried. While it is a home improvement store, they do have quite the array of non perishables, and pet selection. From dry goods, to frozen items there seemed to have been tons and tons of options for those. :) All in all, we're glad to have a Menards close by just wished it had a bigger variety of items for us to pick up what we need. read more

We purchased a ceiling fan, but when we got it home and opened the box, we could see that it had been used and repackaged. Parts were carelessly thrown in the box and the bags with the hardware were opened and parts missing needed for assembly. It seems that someone at Menards knowingly did this, hoping that the unsuspecting buyer would just deal with it. We were also ready to purchase a new sliding glass door there but there was no one to help us, so we ultimately gave up. Never had that problem at Lowes! Went to get a Christmas tree today (Sunday) and had the pleasure of getting helped by Daniel who also assisted us with prepping our tree. He was very polite and respectful. Only thing I would like for Menards to work on is getting him a better saw so he's able to cut the trunks easier. He was given this little blade that was very difficult for him to cut the tree trunks with. He stated he's not allowed to use power tools because of being under 18. Menards, give him a saw with a stronger blade at least. That thin blade was extremely flimsy. Everything else was great though. ***clap*** read more

I purchased a Troy-Bilt Blower & Vac from the Gurnee, IL Menards on 11/12/25. After attempting to use it the same day, I found that it performed extremely poorly--so poorly that it was easier to rake leaves by hand. The product did not function anywhere close to what was advertised. When I attempted to return the item on 11/19/25, I was denied a refund because the store's policy states that gas-powered equipment can only be returned if no gas has been added. I am confused about how I would know the product does not perform without putting gas in it. This type of return is available at virtually every other retailer where gas-powered products are sold, so the rigidity here was surprising. The only options offered were an identical replacement or store credit toward a replacement. Unfortunately, I have no interest in replacing a product that already demonstrated it does not work as described. I spoke with the department manager Carol, and then the General Manager Shawn. I am leaving last names out of this review as a professional courtesy; however, both interactions were disappointing. Rather than attempting to find a reasonable solution, both managers repeatedly recited store policy with a noticeably smug demeanor. There was no apology, no willingness to consider my situation, and no effort to provide customer-focused service. The response devolved to simply, "I've let you know your options" in reference to their policy with nothing more to discuss. Caveat to anyone making a larger purchase at Menards: walk up to their service desk and read their return policy to avoid this issue. As a new Menards customer, this experience was frustrating and far from what I expected. I hope corporate will review this situation and consider whether rigid policy adherence should override basic customer service and product performance concerns. This return policy leaves customers with no practical recourse when a gas-powered product fails immediately upon use. I strongly encourage Menards leadership to address both the customer service approach at this location and the limitations of this policy. read more

The worst customer service out of all of the menards stores. The employees are not helpful or friendly. There are a couple cashiers that I would recommend as they are friendly, but most of the people out on the floor are just warm bodies collecting a check. I'm in there regularly, but today's visit was was just like the others. I'm looking for something and can't find any help, when you do they're busy on their cell phone and ignore ya. This Menards has a great selection of merchandise, more so than some of the other Menards in the area. Although, the service from staff is not as great as other Menards in the area. While here in 1 visit with a pick up order and purchasing items inside I had 4 encounters with staff that were rude or just not helpful. As a woman visiting a hardware store, sadly I felt as I was looked down upon and treated as if I didn't know much about the things in this store or how to navigate it during my experience with my lumber pick up order when asking for help to locate things. When inside the store, the workers were kind although not very helpful. When asking for help to find out items, we were told around the corner when it was really across the store. This happened multiple times, Just confusing. The cashier was kind and quick. I was upset after visiting here, I'll stick with my local Menards from now on or Home Depot. read more

I shop here weekly. The place is a madhouse with the quarantine but they are staffed well and doing their best. I knocked off a star because I get tired of buying things that have been returned and are missing parts. It's happened more than once. They put returns back on the shelf without checking. I once returned a fire pit ring without screws and two days later saw it back on the shelf with the tape I used to close it. Also, they are notorious for putting the worst lumber they have on top of the piles. Other than those annoyances, the place is great. Too bad I cant give negative stars. This company is a complete joke, had issues with them in the past and decided to give them a 2nd shot to only find out there customer service skills have gotten worse! Remolding our bathroom and went to the Vernon Hills Location to purchase a new vanity set on 1/12/19, needed some assistance getting my item from there stock area and even though there were 4-5 names of employees working in that department on the screen, had to wait 15min to finally be able to find somebody from a different dept. to come over and help me. Get my item, was not offered any assistance by department or cashier as I try to haul product to cashiers along with a baby in my hands. Signs at cashiers clearly say "if there are 2 or more ppl in line we will open up another register", guess that must have not applied on the particular day I went as there where only 2 lines open both with clearly more then 2 ppl. Front end manager was just prancing around and didn't even bother to jump on a register and help out! Got home with the vanity set turns out the cabinet is broken and the hinges are damaged as well. Haul baby with broken vanity set to be replaced to the Gurnee Location on the following day and was helped by "Alex" at the service desk, which was completely unapologetic and could care less that I had to be inconviced by there poor quality products, lug a baby out in the cold, along with there Garbadge product, go on a scavenger hunt again for an employee to help me, haul it up to the service desk again to only be told that even though the Vernon Hills location gave me 15% off, that they would not be able to do the same, that I would need to drive back to the Vernon Hills store!!! I was completely appalled by her non-friendly attitude and response and asked to speak to the store manager, Alex decides to call it a day again with her poor Customer Service Skills, doesn't bother to excuse herself let alone even say that the store manager is on his way up, but instead tells another employee "text me and let me know what happens", if she was so concerned she should have stuck around don't you think! Finally after waiting for 20 minutes, the store manager comes up dosnt apologize for the delay and again states that they are really strict on there policy, even though I had my original receipt showing the price I had got at a differnet menards location. So in other words....they could care less about the incinvienece I was faced with, never apologized or went the extra mile to accommodate a customer and certainly lacked in common courtesy skills let alone Customer Service skills!! I have thus returned all product and purchased at Lowe's where there was staff to help me and there pricing was much more lower along with better quality products. When you tell people during a major storm that you're expecting so many generators, maybe the store manager should come over and form some sort of line before 170 people show up and make problems. Came here to return some plants that did not fare well due to the mild April weather. First time I came they said I needed to dig it up with roots in the dirt. So, I proceeded to do that, brought them in and then they tell me that only annuals, not perennials, are only guaranteed. Wasted time and gas in what should of been told to me the very first time. Not really sure how I want to rate this place. On one hand, I've asked a couple associates where something was in the store and they didn't seem to care at all. One of them even said they didn't have what I needed in the store and I ended up finding it right around the corner minutes later. In a big store like this where there's a wide variety of things, I think they can do a little bit better at being helpful to customers. On the upside though, I bought something that turned out to be total junk and was surprised at how easy it was to make a return. The Gurnee Menards on Grand Ave. is one of the smaller, older Menards stores. It has resisted attempts to become standardized into some version of the newer-constructed Menards in the area. It's easier to find things here... but there are less things to find. If what you're looking for might be a bit out of the ordinary, they might not stock it here. For example, they had a sale on a radiant floor control panel for a while; a big item, tanks, manifolds... not a common household peice of equipment. The Gurnee store only had the display model. They had to special order it -- or, I could drive out to the newer, bigger Fox Lake store. They had two in stock. Customer service here has been a little hit-and-miss at times; when they're good, they're awesome, knowledgeable and patient. When they aren't good, they treat you like chopped liver or devoutly ignore you. I've seen the service desk just teeming with employees and only one customer getting served at a time. Welcome to everyday retail, I guess. Lately I've noticed that they're trending to the good side of things; there must've been an internal initiative to improve. But, if you're looking for bulk fasteners, lumber and the usual stuff, they can set you up -- and usually at a good price. I rented a truck from here, good solid vehicle, nothing fancy, a little tired; standard pickup bed. 70 minutes for one flat fee; and a fixed fee for gas. So no fill ups required. Just bring your own insurance card and you license when you rent. I got back under the 70 min limit, $23.50. Not bad. read more

I'm on the fence about the new, upgraded Menards in Gurnee. While they've greatly expanded their stock, I don't know where everything is now. I'll probably get used to it, however. I go to Menards over the other two larger competitors for convenience, to support smaller, more local chains, and because I don't like the politics of the Home Despot. The stock is nearly the same, there typically are more people around to help me find what I want, and their prices are lower. All things considered, this is my favorite home hardware warehouse. Now they carry a lot more stuff like appliances and groceries and pet supplies. Why they carry the last two things is a mystery to me, but I like a bargain. It's there at Menards. read more

I placed an online order July 8, 2020 for pick-up at the Gurnee Menards store. I received a confirmation email that my order was ready for pick-up. I went to the Gurnee menards on 5/31/15 at 1330pm. I had to purchase top soil so I went to the garden section outside. After finding someone who wanted to help me by the topsoil, I purchased 15 bags. I asked for load assistance being a disabled vet. I was told to drive my truck into the garden section. No problem. I got up to the security gate where two young men were working. They were rude as could be! Didn't care that I had a question on where to go to pick the stuff up. As I found the correct aisle, 3 loader guys were laughing and joking as customers walked by clearly wanting to ask questions, but the employees were just chatting away. I asked two guys to load up the truck, they couldn't count to 15 because they tried to short me bags. The kicker, the boys at the security shack upon exiting 1 was on his phone, the other inspected my truck and THREW my receipt back at me. Seriously? I told him he needed to work on his people skills and drove off. This is the second time I've been to this Menard's in 6 months and the 2nd time I have had an issue! I am so surprised to see less than a four star rating for his Menards store in Gurnee. I have had excellent experiences at this store. When I am going to make quantity purchases, this store is my go-to. (For the one-off's or when I need major advice, I'll go to the local Ace hardware store.) I often go into this store with a particular item in mind, and every time I ask for assistance, it is found. And the prices are competitive or better than the Home Depot or Lowe's. While not a pretty web experience, I have used menards.com to purchase, too; not in love with the service charge, but the money saved more than covers it. read more

Well I see that I'm not the only one writing about the non-existent customer service. But I'll add my two cents: This is just the latest in a plethora of bad episodes with this location. I want to be clear that it is THIS location. Gurnee. I live sandwiched between Gurnee and Fox Lake. Fox Lake is a bit further than Gurnee but it's worth it to go to Fox Lake if for nothing else, your sanity. The problem is, Gurnee is convenient for its proximity to nearby stores. So if you need to hit the walmart too, well, it doesn't make sense not to visit that Menards. It's also very close the expressway. So essentially, they have a fairly captive audience. So I decided to get some hostas for a dead spot in my front yard. I hate hostas by the way, once you plant them you can never change your mind, it's like the tatoo of the plant world. But I digress; I went to Menards because I saw on a previous trip they had them for about $2. Of course they didn't when I went yesterday. Only the $4 ones remained. The person working the plants is truly clueless, I mean TRULY clueless so why I bothered asking, I have no idea. I did and as expected he couldn't help me. I just went and picked 5 of the $4 hostas and decided to call it a day. I went to the checkout. At first I couldn't tell if anyone was there. The man, Jakub, was kind of poised back against the wall and I initially didn't see him. He greeted me, I think, checked what I had and I thought was ringing me up. I moved forward to the card transaction device so that I could pay. Jakub isn't saying anything and after a bit, I wondered what was happening since the card device wasn't displaying a total. i finally asked, "Is there a problem?" Jakub replied, "I've been locked out". Now I had been standing there 5 mins by this time and you'd think it might have occurred to him to say something but we are at gurnee menards so your expectations should be lowered significantly. After his pronouncement, he THEN gets on his walkie talkie device to summon help. No one responds, he does it again, and again, once more then someone responds. He then has to wait for the person to physically come back to the garden center. Meanwhile, I have things to do, you know like live, and given how long it took to get a response to his pleas for help, I have no faith in their team to rush to his aid. 5x4 equals $20 so I reached into my purse and gave him $22 to cover any tax and proceeded to take my plants and go. Jakub shouted that he had to scan it. I responded there was a whole table of them to scan all he liked. At my car, the nastiest little woman came out with another woman and informed me that they had to scan the plants. I repeated what I told Jakub. She took the plant out of my hand and went back in the store to scan it. Yeah. I followed and got my plant and my change and also a piece of my mind to the nasty little creep. She told me. "have a nice day, maam" which is code for you-know-what. I replied in kind. I sent a message to Menards by the way. I gave every bit of detail I'm giving you. The response was two lines. If I take the time to write to you, that's serious and should be taken as such, right? It may be top-down folks. I've noticed issues at other Menards but nothing compares to Gurnee. I recently purchased a front loading washer and dryer from the Gurnee Menards location. At the time of the sale, I was told that the delivery team would stack them. This was vital since we only had space for this configuration. I was also told that they would remove the old devices. Again, very important due to lack of space. The delivery did arrive as scheduled. That is where the good, or even average service stopped. The driver asked me where I wanted the washer and dryer. When I showed him, he told me they would not put them where I needed them because they would not stack them. I called the contact name on the delivery paperwork (Jacob Kahn). This guy was very rude. He told me they would not stack the washer/dryer. I said I needed them stacked and was told they would do that. He proce dead to tell me "That is between you and the store." He then proceeded to hang up on me. What!.. Really!!. I then told the driver to take the items back because I didn't have a space for them if they weren't stacked as promised. I then went directly to the store to try to resolve this issue. The store was no more helpful than the delivery team was. It was like they sold me the items, now it was mine and they were done. I spoke to the AGM (Matt B). He seemed very unconcerned. In fact, he left me standing at the front of the store for al,out an hour while he "tried" to figure it out. Needless to say, by that time, I was VERY heated. I got a refund and went to a different location in Fox Lake. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. This store appoligized, and took ownership. It wasn't even their issue to resolve. However, they worked with me every step of the way. They delivered EXACTLY what they promised. The delivery guy (George) was AMAZING! Not sure what the issue is in Gurnee. However, I will NEVER go there again and will share my experience with everyone I know. I special ordered a custom cabinet for my kitchen and it arrived at the Gurnee location on time but wasn't the color that was ordered. The error was caught when the cabinet was received by the store. I was notified that day, June 2 2017. I was assured the replacement order was made and a RUSH was put on it. The Menards employee named Mark informed me that it take about a week. The order status online hasn't progressed past order placed June 3 2017. Today is June 15 2017. The original order took 10 days. I'm thoroughly disappointed. I absolutely don't recommend special ordering from Menards. Because someone can't read a work order and built the WRONG color cabinet! And still shipped it?! I've tried reaching out to the customer service online via email and still haven't had a response. Sure the prices at Menards are slightly better than the competitors but the customer service sucks! The store manager is unprofessional, immature, and stupid, when tried to ask him to fix a situation he answers, " I apologize we will try to fix the problem". the nailing gun, power tool aisles are always a mess you see a price for something there, but at the register says a higher price. Manager answers " I apologize we will try to fix the problem". I went there 4 days ago and saw a pretty good nailing gun for $192.00 that's what the shelf price said. I started saving for it for 4 days. I went back to buy it with the price still at $192.00. After those 4 days!. I was so happy but, when I go to the register price changed. it was for $270.00 I asked for the manager and showed where the gun was with the price of $192.00 he said it was been sitting in the wrong place. He said I can not honor that because someone else put it there. Staff are not helpful and really don't know what's going on. One says one thing and the other says another. Even management doesn't have a clue. Besides that - the majority of them are rude and have no understanding of true customer service. My visit to this store was one that no one should have to go through. I made my purchase and paid for it on their online site for pick up at the store. When I got there to pick up my purchase - the product looked like it had gone through a war and back (I took pictures with my phone). Packaging ripped apart and they had this thing wrapped every direction with boxing tape. I'm sorry but when I purchase a new item; I expect it to be "new". And when it's an electronic device I really don't want the packaging to be damaged. Upon seeing the condition, I asked for another. I was told they didn't have another. I then asked if they would contact another store to obtain. I was told "no". I then advised them that I did not want to accept the item in the condition it was in. They then told me to go to the customer service desk to return it. Once there, the girl told me to go get my receipt from their kiosk. What grand customer service! Then I was told that they would not reimburse the "processing" fee. I explained that I ordered the item with expectations of picking it up and being on my way. However, I also expected it to be "new". It would have been a different story if I had made the purchase then once seeing the item decided I didn't like the color and didn't want it. I asked to speak with the manager and he proceeded to tell me that they had to have an employee spend time to get the item for me and he couldn't reimburse the fee. Really??? If I were physically in the store and asked an employee to assist me - would I be charged a fee???? I spent my time shopping on their website, driving to their store, paid for in good faith and that my time was worth something as well. He was a true arrogant fool. I have purchased many items and spent a lot of money over the years at Menards and will not every step foot in one of their stores again. HELLO - Home depot and Lowes, you just gained a customer for life! Note - they only got 1 star because I had to give something in order for the review to post. They really deserve negative stars! I spent 30 minutes waiting in a completely dead store waiting on the one guy who had enough basic experience to operate a blind cutter completely ignoring me while helping another shopper. I have hard time walking and tried to enter the store at the Garden Center entrance on 3 separate occassions in less than one week's time. I understand it's mid-September, but if you're gonna sell mums, you can't expect folks to enter store at one end, walk to the opposite end and then back again, just to buy some flowers. For mobility impaired folks like me, it's not easy. Spoke to manager and was told no set hours--people aren't purchasing stuff from that department this time of year. Maybe they people aren't buying cuz the doors are locked. We needed fertilizer too and went elsewhere to purchase.
