Consistently rude staff, will go out of my way to avoid this store at this point. They don't care at all about you. Go to Waukegan store.

Granted it was 6:15 pm and they are close to closing at 7pm. I really wanted to love this place…read moresince it is close to my home. There was no one in the reception area when we arrived so we were just browsing their pretty inventory. Then finally two older ladies came out of the back area- I announced my presence with a "hello" since I was browsing their aisles of flowers and tropical plants and did not want to startle them. They were both not very friendly and I immediately felt uncomfortable like I was interrupting them. I proceeded to ask her about bushes and one of the women acted like she didn't understand a word that I said while the other one just completely walked away. (I am a GenX Japanese American north side Chicagoan and my partner is a biracial black and white north side Chicagoan as well) she was extremely snotty and rude to me like she didn't understand what I was asking her so I took her outside to speak with my partner because I was already visibly upset-so then I asked her "are you Mary? " she's like "No Mary is inside." So Mary was the other rude lady peeking out the door. I'm like thanks but no thanks. Let's go. I asked my partner in the car if it was just me and he said "no these women are rude." So as a small business minority woman myself-who runs her own small business in the city of Chicago - I WILL NEVER GO BACK there it's was not a pleasant experience shop there at your own risk.

This is my first visit to Mary's and they've got some great flowers here! Lots of options I haven't seen shopping around the last few years at other places. We got some begonias that are stunning and holding up fantastic so far. We picked up a tropical bush as well, which Mary herself did advise me would likely not survive the winter. She did give me some advice on how to winterize it if I want to try and bring it inside, she seems knowledgeable and it's pretty cool that she offers plants like these. I always grab some veggies and herbs as well and she delivered on that with a few different herbs I'm excited to try. Boxwood basil is new to me but that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I do wish she had more variety of veggies available, I might have missed the boat on that. I did get a nice heirloom tomato plant, she had these in a back lot. It's a bit hard to get navigate back there and it's not a flat path so be prepared. To sum up, this is a smaller operation than some local competitors but that plant enthusiast charm goes a long way. I'd definitely recommend it for flowers, they've also got lots of cute outdoor decorations. It's a great spot to find something unique too! It COULD use some layout improvements and I found some things unlabeled as I was perusing. I'd say it's definitely worth checking out for either a seasoned gardener or a first timer!

I come here every year at the start of gardening season to get the ball rolling with some veggies…read moreand flowers. Everything is looking nice and healthy this year but the selection is already lacking a bit, not sure if I'm late starting or if they just cut back their options but I still found plenty to start with. The workers are always helpful and friendly and the lot is well organized. I have good success with everything I get here usually but I have definitely killed a few bell pepper plants in the past which is, to be fair, probably my own fault. Prices are up this year but that's true for everywhere and I didn't find anything to be outrageously expensive. If your looking for some herbs, flowers, or veggies to grow its worth a stop in to look around at their selection, they also have ground cover plants if that's what your in the market for.

I bought 3 variegated leaf new guinea impatients for a large pot. I had to remove 2 because 1 was enough and planted elsewhere. They also have unique plants. See orange new guinea impatient with pinky ruffled edge. It's striking! Unique vegetables as well. They have a black cherry tomato called Midnight Snack. Will get next year if they carry it. I saw it too late in the season.

I tried to explain endlessly, the person that was helping me previously was sitting right there and never said a word to jump in and help. She was the one to r present options. As a customer, we do our best to describe what we mean, the company are the experts. No one cared in the moment. The sales person or anyone could have stepped in to be helpful when I was totally and I mean TOTALLY confused. I had the time and date of my last visit with the info that I received documented. I shared that. I was just left to remain unaware. Also, all I did was type bench in their search and it came right up. This was after I was told it didn't exist. So, I'll take a pass on revisit an experience with your team. From one visit to the next, the pricing constantly changes, and communication with the staff is extremely difficult. I don't understand how the exact same part can more than double in price within just a few days. I had the timestamps, photos, and all the details documented. One day, the item is supposedly "in the system," and the next day it suddenly disappears. Then a new price seems to get made up on the spot. The whole experience comes across as highly untrustworthy, especially when there are plenty of other businesses nearby willing to be transparent and consistent. What really frustrated me was being told in person that they didn't have 'benches' on their website. I walked to my car, searched their website, and found the benches that I was referring to AND searchable for nearly half the price I was quoted. In business you don't 'try' to be professional. I wish someone had of tried harder when I was standing there with proof of my last visit and really needed help. If they simply don't want to work with certain customers, they should say so directly. I was polite, respectful, and genuinely interested in their business the entire time. Very disappointing experience.

Many plants just sticks with a few leaves. I got a 6 pack of hot pink impatient. I waited forever for them to fill in my pot, but they still have very few blooms. Normal impatients bloom like crazy! Summer is almost over. Additionally, while I was shopping, I asked an employee if the had tuberous begonia. She ignored me the first time. I typically spent several hundred dollars there every year even though they are much more expensive than other garden shops in the area and I like to shop "local". Today I stopped in to check out what they had as I haven't been in for a while. As usual, I brought my small canine sidekicks. I, along with another customer who had brought their Yorkie along, were shopping outside, and were asked to leave our dogs (mine are an apparently scary Chorkie and a Chihuahua mix) in the car if we wanted to shop. This is not necessarily an unreasonable request, but it's never been a problem in all the years I have been shopping there (or other local garden shops) . It was explained to me that some customers may be afraid of dogs and they couldn't come inside. I understand this, but we were outside and there were literally no customers except gentleman with the Yorkie in myself. As it was 84° outside, leaving the dogs in the car was not an option, but leaving my purchase behind was. Both the Yorkie owner and I left with our vicious dogs. Back to the Big Box store (which is pet friendly)!
