Very great selection in this store. Everyone working there is friendly and helpful, besides Bob. This guys stinks, very unhelpful.

The store is clean and organized but this review is more about an employee because I needed keys made for my car and it was way cheaper than trying to get back to the dealership to make it. Gary at the service department is amazing and friendly. He really knows his stuff. He walked me through the process they didn't have my key fob on hand so he order the part and I came back a week later for him to cut the key and program everything. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes and everything works great. I'm a satisfied customer. read more

I left a pretty bad review once, but I go this Ace weekly at least. I love it. I am always doing projects and they save me a lot of time. They have the best staff. Rodney and Rachel are super friendly and helpful. But you know who's not- Bob. This guy is the worst. Every time he helps me, he either doesn't know or pretends to know and gets me the wrong stuff. I seriously will not let him help me ever again. Bob is terrible. Go to Rodney and you won't be sorry. read more

I just left this store. There were FOUR employees there, with one putting out Christmas decorations. The store was disorganized understandably. However, I walked around and around in the yard/garden isle looking for products. Not one employee asked if I needed help. Only 1 other customer was in the store and he came in behind me. Amazing Customer Service!! My Customer Service experience not only went above and beyond but actually far exceeded my expectations. I had a delivery order in which one of the items I needed was no longer in stock but instead of just taking the unavailable item off of my order and only delivering the remaining items, I received a call from the store manager explaining the issue and allowing me to order an item that was currently in stock and including it with my original delivery order. In the past I have ordered from different ACE Hardware locations and similar issues of items not being instock have occurred but no one has ever gone above and beyond like this to insure my customer service experience from order to delivery was seamless. I truly appreciate it because the item I really needed was the item that was not originally instock. I've been going to Ace in Gurnee for 20 years now. My rating even two years ago would be 5 stars. What's changed? They have hired snippy high school or college age girls to work the registers and on multiple occasions over the past year or so I have seen them get visibly upset at me or other customers when there is a question or pricing error while they are ringing up a customer. I complained to the store manager about a specific rude incident and he just shrugged his shoulders and said he would address it. Fast forward to yesterday and I'm on line and the customer in front of me is using an ace $5 rears coupon and the register clerk girl is rolling her eyes and sighing at him because he dared questioned a price on an item. It was totally embarrassing and a poor representation for the store. Ace Gurnee needs to do a better job with hiring and training for their front register staff. read more

Ace is especially helpful to those of us who like to repair, install and maintain odds and ends around our homes, but are all too often clueless about how to go about it, in need of instruction, encouragement, and an occasional "Sure you can do it!" vote of confidence. It is not as much about saving a buck or two, as it is about not having to let a mystery schmo into your home to TCB. If you can get a floor clerk's attention at any one of the big, glorified hardware warehouse lumberyard stores, consider it your lucky day. If that floor clerk can intelligently answer your questions, consider yourself the equivalent of a Publishing Clearing House winner in glorified hardware warehouse lumber yard-dom. If that floor clerk can or will instruct you about how to execute your task, and be pleasant at the same time, you are blessed ... or you got terribly confused and ended up at Ace Hardware store, instead. Next time you need to repair, install and maintain something around your home, forget the big, glorified hardware warehouse lumber yard store and get thine happy azz to Ace. These people even can school you about the ways of paint and wall paper, and match paint to just about any color sample that you have! read more

Recently I went to this store to get two window screens made. Instead of two trips to the store, one trip to order, and another to pick it up, I had to make six trips. 1. order 2. pick up 3. go back because screens are not done properly 4. pick up again 5. go back because I had been overcharged 6. go back to get the refund as I had to take the old screen to them to get the refund At the first visit I gave my old screen to them so that they can make two identical new screens. But they had also rescreened the old frame, and charged, which I didn't realize till they told me at the 5th trip. The person in-charge said I need to bring back the old screen to get the refund for over charge. So at the 6th trip the counter person tore the screen from the frame, and gave me the refund. No sorry, no apology, but clear anger towards me from the person in-charge. Basically I had to make the 6th trip just so he could tear the screen and put it in trash. read more

I've always been a fan of ACE hardware, and that is mainly because there's always someone in a red vest with a smile and the willingness to help. And, to be honest, I'm a man that needs decent amount of help with getting the right tools. I'm the kind that ends up using phrases like "looks like" or "what-cha-ma-call-it" or "that thingy", and almost all the time, they know what I'm talking about. And Sunday wasn't any different. I described in great lengths (accompanied by hand gestures) what I wanted and for what. And after navigating through their store, I ended up with everything I wanted and needed for the job that was waiting for me at home. In hindsight, I wish I took his name down and thanked him on here. Often a great service or experience makes a day much better, and this was one of them. What I was looking for became a dialogue with him, and his idea of how to tackle the situation helped with coming up with a better plan of action. I was there half an hour before the Bears and Packers game, which clearly was the perfect time to be there. Checkout was a breeze as I got the usual series of questions with a smile and politeness. As for location- the Grand Ave construction does create a hindrance, but that is only temporary. They have a huge parking lot that they share with Walgreens. I cannot imagine this parking lot ever being filled to capacity, so parking really isn't an issue with this location. This ACE definitely lives up to their tagline of "The Helpful Place". read more

This place blows me away with their fastener selection. I just ran all over town looking for 5/8 x 6" fully threaded hex head bolts. Just found them at this mom n' pop hardware store for a cool $4/apiece. This is probably the 3rd time this year I've found something here I couldn't get from a supply house. I'm not too sure about the low ratings but I absolutely love this store. I come from San Diego where they have quite a few Ace Hardware stores and this one doesn't look as "well-kept" as ones I've seen in California on the outside but as soon as you walk in, you will be pleasantly surprised. They have almost everything you can possibly need. I was in-and-our which I prefer if I'm only getting one or two things rather than going to a Home Depot or Lowe's where I will at least be there for 15 minutes. The service was very friendly and attentive. The aisles are well labeled and I was able to find what I needed in a short amount of time and there was saws associate that offered help while I was just looking around. I actually found myself just looking around the other things they had in the store because I was so amazed with all the different things they had inside. If I was to change one thing, the entrance is sort of weird in that as you enter you are led to the check out lane? But other than that I will definitely come back here again. read more

I can't understand the complaints! Staff is always helpful and friendly. I've never had a problem with custom orders. The one time there was an issue, they made it right. The same goes for repairs. They are very upfront about the potential of repairs not being worth the money! read more

I will never buy another thing from this store thanks to a condescending and rude manager. I went there to buy a Big Green Egg for Father's Day. While there, I saw the EXACT same Burgess Mosquito Fogger that I had just returned to Menards down the road because it was defective. Menards did not have another one in stock. A sign at the entrance to ACE says that they will match competitors Ad's. ACE's price was $10 more than Menards everyday price. I asked the sweet, helpful girl at the counter if she could price match Menard's price. She said sure, but needed to call a manager over. The manager was rude and condescending to me, and essentially said that he would not match the price because I didn't have a printed ad with a SKU for him to attach to his copy of the receipt. I asked if I could show him the item on Menard's website, and he was not interested in listening to me. I guess that he was unaware that I was there to purchase an $829 BBQ grill from him. I was in no mood to explain that to him, so I politely walked out. Fortunately, I found a BGE at Abt, and they price matched ACE, so I bought the stand and accessories. All in all I spent over $1100 on that purchase. ACE lost the sale and my business by treating me like a lying cheapskate for asking them to honor one of their posted policies. As luck would have it, Menards got some more mosquito foggers in stock this week and they are offering 11% rebates on everything, so this fogger works out to be about $16 cheaper than ACE, and I know that if I have any issues with it, Menards won't treat me rudely. BTW, Lowes and Home Depot will beat their competitors price by 10%. So if you find something at ACE, google it to see if HD or Lowes carries it. Take a picture of the price at ACE (or shown a sales assoc. the online web price, then drive 2 miles down the road and save 10% no questions asked. I cannot imagine a manager at a retailer treating a customer poorly, and expecting them not to flee to your nearby competitors. I will not be back. read more

Go to Ace when you need help finding something or require the expertise of staff to help you solve a problem. They are phenomenal in this regard. The store is small enough to negotiate but very well stocked for your hardware and outdoor needs. Prices are competitive, especially if you join the Rewards program which in addition to discounts, will send you coupons throughout the year. You can actually find people to help you there, sometimes they even ask you before you require their help. This is so much different than the other mega warehouses in town, Ace is a breath of fresh air. read more

I have lived in Gurnee since 1986. It never ceases to amaze me how rude most of the customer help is in this hardware. This week I needed 2 copies of a key made and that's what I told the "key guy". He took my master and when finished he tossed a tiny folded bag with my coies and handed me my original without a thank you or here you go. A number of weeks ago I was looking for 2 rivets for a Schlage deadbolt. The service guy showed me where the dead bolts were but told me he doubted those rivets were available. When I got home, I called Schlage described what I wanted and in a few minutes 4 were on their way to me. Obviously making the call for me was too much work for my friendly Ace guy. The clerks said this and another Ace Hardware in Round Lake are owned by one person, Rich Laskowski. The cashier offered a "free" holiday shopping bag because my purchases totaled over $70.00. But there was a catch: They added in the retail cost of the gift bag ($4.99) and then added tax on the whole purchase. Then, they deducted $5.00, Does this make sense to you? If it's offered as free, it shouldn't be rung up as a purchase, taxed and then deducted from the bill. Consumer Beware. I brought 5 window screens here to be repaired. They had rips/tears in the mesh. I get a call 10 days later letting me know my screens are ready for pick-up. I go to Ace and get the screens. I proceed to pay and they tell me my total is $197.00 dollars!!! I nearly fell over!! I tell them no way that price is correct. The employee named "Scott" tells me the price is right. I can get 5 "Brand New" screens for $192 at the local big box home improvement store. These guys/Ace are robbing customers blind with their inflated prices. My wife and I know Ace charges a few dollars more for things, but we try to support the local neighborhood shops. Scott was not even willing to negotiate price and would rather lose a customer. I wasn't looking for a freebie, just pay a fair value. Anyways, my wife and I will not step foot into Ace ever again and will let neighbors and friends know, DO NOT USE ACE FOR SCREEN REPAIR!! read more
