I needed paint for my shed and saw it was on sale here so I went because it's close by. I noticed the paint I wanted wasn't the same price as advertised so I asked for help and a very unpleasent older man came over and said I don't know what to tell ya pal that's the price and walked away. I brought up the price on my phone found him again and showed it to him and although he obviosly didn't want to look and be bothered he glanced quickly and said that's only the price if you order online and tried to walk away again. I got frustrated and spoke in a louder than normal tone and said so your telling me you won't honor this price? Ace has a sign that they refill propane tanks. I went in and ask an employee if I could have someone refill my bbq sized propane tank. He said they were busy. He went on to say that he normally does this but he has already worked two hours overtime. And, he said that no one at the store could help me today. I want to support local the local hardware store despite the higher prices. However, he will not be back at this Ace location. read more

I came to store Saturday 05/20/23 morning with few small few items to return Two guys at register had attitude right away. I provided receipt and the cashier asked for ace loyalty number. I said this is receipt and that's items bought what else u need and he said i will not work with you and went to next customer. I asked to speak to manager and he said he is not on duty today. Then Manager Mike showed up and he said be patient we will get to you. I said I don't have whole day and he got pissed off threw my items on ground and told me to take business somewhere else, that it's Saturday morning and it's not macys store with many employees. If you are sick on Saturday stay home obviously you can't work with people. read more

Do not buy a Weber grill from this place. Nothing but trouble with igniter within a year and only response is to send a box of parts and tell me to fix it myself. Reasonable service. Staff seems distracted from addressing potential customers. Personnel prefer to congregate around the cash register area and bid polite "hello" to arrivals. It is a clean and organized store. Location is convenient for Barrington shoppers. I personally prefer more staffing consistency with experience and knowledge. I view my shopping as a buying, consultative, and learning occasion. For my "important" projects, I seek those stores that meet my objectives. It is worth any slight pricing differences. read more

Ace is supposed to be built on customer service...one employee in general is completely the opposite of helpful and having service. I believe his name Ed. I asked him if he could help me find a drain cleaner since my drain got clogged....Ed proceeded to point to an aisle and say "half way on the right you can't miss it". The bad thing about this is I asked him for help in choosing a product, he seemed too interested in bossing around other employees and looked like he had something better to do than helping me. Ultimately I found another employee who was younger and he took his time to tell me what the difference was between each product of drain cleaners. The service and management needs to step up in training and needs to help "us" customers in showing us where certain products are... Really wish I had a better experience here but Ed ruined it for me. I'm glad the younger employee helped me find what I was looking for, I believe the kids name was Will. read more

This store has excellent customer service, a wide range of products and super knowledgeable staff to help out with whatever project brings you into this store. I always find what I am looking for when I shop here whether it is for an electrical, plumbing or outdoor lawn & garden project and anything in between. I wanted my propane tanked refilled but a young man said he didn't have time to do it so I called the next day and they said to come after lunch which I did and they still refused to fill the tank, they wanted me to exchange it. Every time I walk in this store I get the most inadequate service ever. I attempted to go back to give them the benefit of the doubt a few times and the same. Its as if I'm bothering them it seems when asking a question. They just say they don't know and walk away...it was unbelievable. It's an older group of men working there...one was actually spitting on the ground in the store while "helping" me. I will happily drive to the store down on Route 22 as opposed to go a block away into this store again. Polar opposite experiences. These older men have to learn how to help people and stop spitting and swearing when customers are around. Disappointed to say the least with this establishment. read more

Terrible customer service! If you're working at a Hardware store in Barrington, does that excuse you from common courtesies of retail? We called prior to going there to check on an item and the person who took our call was rude and very short with our simple request. Next we went to the store and not one person working made eye contact, said hello or asked if we needed help. They were far too busy restocking to assist us and never thanked us or extended any niceties when we checked out. We have a tremendous tolerance for a busy retail environment but this was simply unacceptable behavior for a seller of goods located in Barrington, IL. read more

Great service! I can walk in, say what I need, and they will find it for me. For example, I needed a weed killer for thistles - I was clueless as to which product to buy. The staff knew exactly what ingredient to look for and found the right product. I was in and out in under 5 minutes. For my next project, I need some spray paint - again I am clueless about which paint is the right one for my project. I know that when I go to Ace, they will select the right product for me! We stopped with a local friend to pick up a couple of things. We asked about candles, someone pointed out a kitchen candle and said how natural this fresh wave product line was and that it was a local company. There is no way it is "natural," some in the line had plastic beads and it smelled like a cedar pine-but not a natural fragrance? So then they said it was fragrance free! What a welcome addition to barrington, and within walking distance of my house! An unexpectedly huge selection of tools, hardware and pretty much anything you need for that weekend project. Saves a trip fighting traffic to another store. Friendly and helpful staff is ready to answer any question. They have Craftsman, Dewalt and many great brands and being so close, I've already overspent my tool allowance. Tight aisles they have tried to pack the old ace hardware store into a store half it's size. The employees are under trained, you might have 2-3 people for a price check because they don't know how to enter it in the register. If you need help make sure to ask when you walk in the store, or you may not find anyone in the store that will stop and help. read more

Jim went way above and beyond today to help me out. I had a door from a Little Free Library that is a free, 24-hour library for the children in Carpentersville. It was vandalized and the plexiglass had been broken out of the door. I didn't realize that it would be quite a project to get the door apart to put new Plexiglass in-- and Jim, seeing my dismay, spent the time to take the whole door apart, cut new glass and put the whole thing back together-- for $6. What a nice surprise! It's great to have a neighborhood hardware store like this. Absolutely the worst service I have experienced. I went here out of convenience and hoping that they would be more knowledgeable than Home Depot or Menards. Not only did they not know anything, which generally I am used to at hardware stores, one "gentleman" could not have been more rude as I tried to explain to him the part I was looking for. Update from previous negative review. I must change my 1 star to 5. I should have written my original review in the fall when the bad customer service occurred. Instead, I wrote it a few days ago without visiting the store more recently. What a great change! We went in today because we were in a hurry and it was right on the way. We could not believe the difference from our last visit. Maybe they read the previous negative review, but whatever it was, I commend them on fixing the problem. They were wonderful today! As soon as we walked in, two young employees at the counter said hello. Then, as we continued a few steps further, a man (that I had recognized from the Fall) asked us if we needed any help. He showed my husband where to look for what he needed and as I was standing in the next aisle, another man asked me if he could help me find something. They were so nice and helpful! And then as we were walking up to checkout, another guy asked if we'd found everything ok. I feel badly that I wrote my previous review based on visits made a few months ago. We will definitely be coming back to support this local business. It makes me happy to say that! And I've learned a lesson to write my reviews promptly. read more
