Been going there off and on for years. Always friendly, always a great haircut/brows. Definitely recommended.

A quick and unexpected trip the barber before a meeting turned into a delight of an experience. An oasis of comfort and ease. Quick, peaceful and kind are the words that come to mind first about this business. *bring cash* read more

This was my first time here getting my hair cut and colored. The person who dis my hair was Calvin. He was very professional and friendly. I hate the fact that everytime I go elsewhere and say " I want 1 inch shorter" it becomes 5 inches. Calvin did what I asked and bam, my hair is 1 inch shorter with a beautiful cut and color. Loveee my new hair. Thanks Calvin, you rock!! read more

Got a quality fade from Alvin. Will be coming back! Paid 40 bucks for it though so be prepared to fork out some cash for quality.

I like to get my hurr cut about every 2 weeks. I love how pretty I feel. I love the 'fuck me' eyes that I get shot walking down the street right after. I was blessed with luxurious, thick hair. I'm like a short haired, dude Rapunzel. You'd think it would be simple to cut, but apparently not. All barbers up until this point, and stylists too, struggled with it. Maybe they were feeling not up to the job? Like doing a touchup on the Man-a Lisa? Well I'm new to town so I was barber-shopping. It's like online dating but worse, and usually without the sex. I walked around looking for a place with the right balance of style, location, price, and hours. Ace fit the bill. The barbers are super friendly, stylish, and sexy. But not so sexy that a person feels like a hillbilly. Like the perfect amount of sexy. The place itself is open, clean, and has the perfect amount of retro furnishings and high tech gadgets. Also Playboy magazines, never opened. This is Cap Hill, people. I've never waited at all to get a spot. Lots of barbers available, and all stylin' hot hair. I don't want to get my hair did by a sad-do you know? The moral of the story is I got a great haircut for $25, and I've never looked better. Dudes are staring holes in my pants like never before. My luxurious locks look amazing. All thanks to Ace Barber. The End. read more

Ace Barber Shop is a cheap, efficient, discreet Vietnamese service business... what? The first time, I just walked in and did not wait too long (although there's very little to speak of in terms of a reception area), discovering that appointments are optional (and punctuality is assisted by limited lot parking available) and preferred so one gets serviced when one arrives which is how I've conducted the swifter subsequent visits. Helen has always done a good job with my often wavy often mess. I was a bit skeptical after the first time (after 6 months of neglect) when it took the week she said it would to grow out and function normally, but it did and it worked out fine for the next 3 months. $20 damage plus every 11th free (which it will be celebratory to cash in, since it implies that both Ace and I are still in the Seattle area in 3 years) is priced correctly in a sea of high-end, high-priced salons, and the quality is enough for me to make the trek into Capitol Hill when I could and still can take a short walk to my previous hair technician. Perhaps if one has special requests another establishment for more thorough and distinct attention would be better, but for simplistic needs, Ace takes care of business. read more

So, I live just a block away from Ace Barber Shop, and had been meaning to go there for my next haircut. My husband goes there to trim his hair, and since his is usually a bit tricky, when he first came back from there with a really good haircut, it was a very promising sign indeed. Turned out to completely live up to the promise as well! I called in the afternoon to make an appointment with Helen (who usually cuts my husband's hair) and since she was free, immediately gave me an appointment for 2:30. She listened patiently to me as I explained how my hair usually behaves so that she'd know what to avoid doing. I have pretty short hair, but assured her that I had no problem with the length being cut and encouraged her to do what she felt would suit me. Even though I said that, she was very cautious and told me that first, she'd cut just a little bit of the length, and if I was okay with that and wanted it shorter, she'd do it. Finally, I did land up cutting it very short (which I love!) and having given her a free hand, she gave me a fun, wispy, feminine feel to a short haircut. I have had problems in the past of asking for my hair cut short where it just winded up making me look like a boy. Helen pays so much attention to detail as well. After shampooing my hair once we were done, she brought me back to the chair and snipped away some stray hairs to clean it up. And that pretty much sums up the best haircut I've had in Seattle so far. Helen is talented and sweet; add that it cost $25 (with a hair wash), and that it's just down the street, how can I not give it 5 stars? I'd give it 10 if I could. Ace has aced it! read more

Thanks to all the great reviews, I headed up here this morning for a cut. I never do anything wild and usually end up with the same boring haircut no matter where I go, but I sat down in Huy "Calvin"'s chair and told him what I usually get. Only I asked him to see what else we could do. 20 min later, I had what you could call a "style" instead of just shorter hair. He was attentive, nice, and skilled. He gave me some great suggestions for how to control my way-too-curly hair and made good conversation, asking what I had planned for the evening (a first date) and suggested I trim up the beard to match the hair (I was thinking I would, but wasn't sure until he mentioned it). Total? $17 + tip. So, I now have a great new style, a great new place to get it done, and if my date goes horribly awry, I sure as hell can't blame the hair! Update 8 hours later: The date canceled...hair still great. read more

Ok picture this. Friday night, friends are in town, late coming home from work. Now I look in the mirror, and OH HELL NO, my hair looks likes hell. And the only cure is a hair cut. So I search out a place around Capitol Hill. I found a few places, and after sitting in line at option 1, I head here. Three ladies greet me and they call out their brother? Friend? to cut my hair, Kevin. "Oh what do you want for your hair cut" he says? I reply "Something quick and cute. He goes to work, little nervous at the speed he is cutting. 15 minutes later, Bam! Awesome hair cut. And it cost me $10 ! The buzz cut is $10 and the scissor cut is $17 for men. The walls are decorated with fun flames, bright reds and oranges and there is good music playing on the stereo system. Overall, super. They have moved to a place right behind Peet's Coffee just a few steps off Broadway (near the post office). read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Ace Barber Shop when it was still on Broadway and you still can't beat the price and quality! Generally, I've had a good experience at most barber shops but, at Ace, there isn't a long wait and you can usually book the stylist you want. Basically, other places can be hit or miss, but Ace is consistent. To put this in perspective, I usually get clippers on the sides and a cut on top. I highly recommend Ace to men and all the women customers that I have seen are also satisfied with their cut. Ace stylists take time to make sure my haircut is what I want! read more

I discovered Ace shortly after moving to Capitol Hill and quickly made it my primary location for professional cranial topiary. The barber shop caters to the young, hip altered bodies that inhabit the local neighborhood, drawing them in with its eclectic decor. A vintage pinball machine graces the front window and local show posters and severed doll heads cover the walls. Getting a haircut at Ace is kind of like getting a haircut in a used music store. The staff are friendly with hipster, goth and or punk rock tendencies. Conversation in the chair more often revolves around the previous night's show at the Chop Suey or the latest American remake of a Japanese horror flick than it does the adventures of Mrs. Light-bottom's dog, Woogums pooping on old man Withers' lawn. Prices at Ace are also very reasonable, at least for someone like me who generally just goes for a basic cut. A men's haircut runs $17, about $4 less than what I am used to, especially for stylists who know their stuff. I have always been satisfied with my experience at Ace and last winter, when I took a nervous girlfriend looking to make a significant change in her look, she left exceptionally pleased and a bit surprised with her results. read more

I do not recommend getting a hair cut from Huy. I generally get my haircut at Ace but my usual stylist is Helen. She's always done a great job. Simply stated, she knows hair and also which cuts look good on people. However, I had Huy cut my hair. Being the only man at Ace I imagined he'd know how to do a seemingly simple trim. But no. I had to tell him twice to cut my hair shorter. Then he left strands of hair over my ears, left my sides looking choppy, unevenly cut my sideburns, and the nape of my neck was awful. On the nape of my neck he cut it so badly that I had errant strands of hair everywhere and he cut a wave into my hairline with the clippers. It looked amateurish and pre-cosmetology school. I can honestly not express just how bad this guy cut my hair. He was more concerned talking about the acne on his face than he was receptive to listening to what I wanted or caring whether it was good a cut. Plus, soon into my haircut another client came in and he told him he'd be with him in 5 min. Please if you go, go see Helen. Huy is by far the worst hair stylist I've ever been to in my life. And that is no understatement. read more

I was a regular (I was even the Duke) ... until I started growing out my hair and strange, short, frizzy strands started appearing. My hair is relatively thick--and it turns out Ace was using thinning shears as a easy alternative to proper staying, but dull ones at that--hence the curly fuzz genesis. I have a feeling that the quality of this place is sliding; the professional calibre is certainly disappointing. Nobody wants frizz. read more

Today, My Boyfriend and I wanted to get a hair cut so bad. We walked to the hair salon he likes, but we couldn't get an appointment for today. Finally, the desperate couple (means us) ended up this barber shop, Ace Barber shop. Luckily, there were no other customers when we arrived, so we got to sit on the chair and got a cape on right away. I don't know who my hair stylist was, but she was a cute young lady with beautiful long curly hair. I was worried a little bit because the price was very inexpensive. However, she did a great job, and I got pretty much everything I wanted. She mainly used a razor. (I wrote this because some people don't like it) Also, they have a tons of hair catalogs, so you can pick something you want. After 20mins, there were full of customers sitting in the waiting area, so I would say we were lucky. They moved to a bit off from Broad way (Probably on Denny?). But you'll see the namebooard on Broad way, so you won't have to be wondering around to look for it. Ace Barber Shop may not be for people who want to spend a luxury time at modern hair salon. However, if you wanna get a hair cut for cheap and good. This is where you might wanna try out. read more

Ace is my go-to for hair -- I'm not joking, I've been coming here for the last 7 years or so. Helen is the only person I trust to cut my hair. I'm a very particular person and she always comes out with a great cut. In college, she gave me my first mohawk (oh youth) and these days it's a more modern and styled look that I get (read: professional). I prefer getting my hair cut here mainly because of Helen. She is super attentive, friendly, gives greats suggestions if you're looking to do something new and above all, her skills are top notch. You can tell from the way she cuts and styles that she cares about you walking out of the shop feeling and looking as good as possible. She doesn't rush. I only get my hair cut about every 5-6 months, so it's a treat for me when I do. I get the whole shebag, a hair wash, razor cut and a styled blow-dry. Prices are super reasonable, lord knows she could get away with charging much more! Also -- one other thing. I am kind of self-imposed awkward and sometimes not a great small talker, but Helen is great at understanding that and doesn't force conversation. If I'm sitting somewhere for 40 minutes or so, I appreciate that the other person can focus on cutting the hair. Love it. As for appointments, this shop is really good about taking those as well as walk ins. I've never had a problem and have had good luck calling in the day of and getting booked in for an appointment. Guys, trust me, get your hair cut by Helen! read more

I've gone to Ace in the past when my usual spot is too booked out for a walk-in, and received standard service. Nothing fantastic, but they got the job done. Sadly, after a very bad experience, I think I will just plan further ahead or practice patience in the future. I needed my hair trimmed in a certain fashion for an event hosting gig. I had grown it out for a bit of a shag, but it had become unmanageable, especially in the back. Scream had too long of a wait, and I was in a time crunch, so I walked to Ace. I was seated quickly, and told my stylist no more than half an inch off the front, and cleaned up an inch in the back. The first red flag should have been when he started arguing with me to cut it short overall. After repeatedly telling him I was growing it out for professional reasons and I did not want short, he finally relented to provide my basic customer request. Then, on his very first cut, he takes over an inch off about a third of my bangs. Fail. As he worked his magic, the front became shorter while the back stayed relatively the same, with just a short trim in place where I had asked for the most hair removal At the end, after I had him re-cut the back so it didn't look like a mullet, I still don't think he understood why I was upset. Actually, I don't even know if he knew I was upset. In his head, perhaps I had suddenly seen the glory of his talents. Or perhaps he thought I was a talking wolf or the Pegasus. It's hard to tell; we were clearly living in separate worlds. I'm not going back. I recommend you don't go in the first place. read more

Been coming here for over three years even after moving out of the city. Calvin does a fantastic job at doing what's good for my hair. Sometimes I'll let him know that I want to try something new and he has no problem telling me why it might not work with my hair rather than just letting me commit hair-a-kiri. I love that he really takes his time and maybe it's just show but after cutting my hair and brushing me off, he always makes a couple final touches which makes me feel like he's really taking the time to be attentive to the details. I've also got my hair cut by Helen a couple times who is also great, but doesn't quite get it like Calvin. The price is reasonable, a little on the pricier side but not even close to designer salon pricey. In the end, a barber is a very personal choice but if you're looking for a new one I recommend trying out Ace. read more

It was monday and a holiday. My 4yo needed a trim. I tried three places prior to Ace. Based on location. The lady was accommodating and had the experience to keep my toddler focused so she could trim the hair. Took about 10 minutes and she did a good job. I do feel $27.00 for a 4yo is steep. I'll probably not take my toddler there again. It's still a decent shop with experienced cutters. read more

Got a great undercut from this place. I called to scheduled an appointment but they accept walk-ins. I brought in some images of undercut designs that I liked and consulted with my hairdresser to get her opinion on the space I have on my head versus how detailed my design can be. She was very willing to work with me on what I had in mind. She shaved the area of the back of my head, buzzed the design in, washed my hair, blew dried it, trimmed my bang and hair shorter, and styled my hair (straightening and braided). All that for around $40. I also broke their handheld mirror but they were super nice about it. Overall a very pleasant experience. read more

I used to HATE getting a haircut. I tried Aveda, Seven, Juno, etc and always feel like crying afterward because I didn't like my haircut.. those stylists just never got it right! That was before I found Ace Barber Shop!! I've gone there 3x now in the past 6months and I LOVE my haircut each time. I got my last hair cut last week, it cost me $30 and everyone, literally everyone has been complimenting me since then. Helen is the best - she's so sweet, friendly and talented. I've never had Calvin cut my hair but he's very good too from my observation. Their shop is not fancy and the service is quick which is the way I like it. Trust me, go here!! read more

The first thing my wife said when she saw me tonight was "wow, your hair looks good". now I've been wearing the same metro/urban gay boy hair style for the last four years, short on the sides, really short in back and longer with spikiness on top but this is probably one time that my not very observant has noticed when I've got a hair cut. I was a walk-in appointment and Nicky, the stylist understood what I wanted and gave me a good haircut. She was also very friendly and didn't rush. More importantly for only 17 dollars without tip she gave me a haircut that normal costs me 35. I think I've found a new stylist in Seattle. Alas on my second visit the same woman was not there I got an ok but not at all excellent cut. read more

Just moved to Seattle and needed a haircut before starting my job (the shaggy grad student look just wasn't cutting it...). So, as per Yelp's recommendations I went by this place yesterday morning. I got seated immediately, asked for a nice trim. Calvin (I think that's his name) did a nice job actually making some recommendations about my hair. In the end, it was a little shorter than I had asked, but I'm happy enough with it. For $20, it's really a good haircut. However, I docked a star since he did end up cutting a bit more than I would have liked. read more

I've been looking for a reliable barber who could do a high fade and make a balding man look semi-young again. So glad that the Yelp reviews for Calvin at Ace Barber were reliable. Not sure about the other stylists here, but Calvin definitely knows his craft. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for his hair cut and it was pretty awful. The lady who cut his hair (don't know her name) had no idea what she was doing... he asked for a 0 on the sides and next thing you know his whole hair was shaved off with some weird uneven hair patch at the top. At this point there was no way to fix it so we asked to just shave it all off. Really disappointed and would not recommend this place. If you do come here- ask for the guy and don't expect much. read more

I got my hair cut yesterday at Ace. I usually go there because it's affordable and the guy who works there has a friendly demeanor, but he wasn't there on Saturday when I went in. I was hesitant to go to one of the ladies that was working there because they tend to aggressively buzz my hair in a manner that's uncomfortable because of the pressure they apply to my scalp, but I threw caution to the wind and my poor scalp and decided to just go with it. I get a simple buzz cut. I get it done all the time without any issues, but that wasn't my experience on Saturday, August 4, 2012. After having my head aggressively buzzed, I get ready to leave and the lady shows me the back of my head with the mirror. I'm a little dumbfounded at this point because on the back of my head looks like the beginning of racing strips which was basically created because of an uneven cut. Instead of fixing it before I could see the problem, the lady explains the skin on my head wrinkled. I replied that I've never had this problem before. Then I asked her if she could simply blend the mistake so it didn't look like I have these racing strips on the back of my head. Instead of fixing the problem before I saw it or even listening to what I was asking, she decided to continue to blame the skin on my head for wrinkling. I understand that I generally only get a buzz cut when I come in and that I don't generate a lot of money, but I'm a repeat customer that tips well. The last time I was in, I even had my eyebrows done. Isn't that worth a little customer service? If she didn't press so hard on my head, she wouldn't have to deal with the skin on my head wrinkling and therefore the uneven cut. To have me walk out of there unsatisfied didn't sit well with me then and even now as I'm writing this review. I won't quietly endure her butchering my hair, attacking my scalp, or attempts of blaming the skin on my head for her inability to provide a service that I am paying her to do. In fact, shame on her for the poor customer service and the unwanted racing strips on the back of my head. I struggled with myself as I was paying and decided I'd still tip her anyway because she still provided a service, but this review will hopefully shed some light on the effects of poor customer service. read more

Kind of a mixed bag, in my opinion. The quality of the hair cut kinda depends on who's working that day. Some days they do a great job, and other days it won't be as good. Abysmally bad. Went in because I was in a hurry for a quick haircut... The simplest haircut you can imagine -- a clean shave with a electric razor at zero... Somehow she managed to not pull it off, leaving several patches of hair, and said that she was done....
