Truth is, most times, you probably don't think about the services of a locksmith until you find yourself in a bad "situation". Then to make matters worse you are scrabbling to find one. Well, let me tell you, if you are looking for a reputable, knowledgeable and affordable locksmith, then Alex is your man. He is the owner of Accurate Locksmith & Security. He is also THE locksmith. I called early on a weekday morning and he gave me a 4pm appointment time that same day. He arrived almost exactly on time. We had discussed my needs earlier, even sent photos on smartphone, making things easier. So, he was prepared. He installed a deadbolt, keyed from both sides. (Not an option for renters, Fire safety concerns) Looks like his prices haven't changed in the last 5 years. $45 to come out, install fee of $55 and price of lock. He explained exactly what he was going to do and did it. Also, he did a great job of cleaning up the mess. Alex told me he started working with locks during college in NJ. He then worked as a locksmith in several business before venturing out to start his own company. He has been solo for many years now, with great community ratings. Reason for visit: Install deadbolt on patio gate door; fix latch that was already in place The price included a $45 service call, $55 for the two-sided deadbolt lock, approximately 1-1.5 hours labor, and a 10% discount for Angie's List members. ***** Alex was very friendly and helpful to work with and was able to visit promptly. I called him the Thursday or Friday before his visit and he was able to schedule for that Monday. He was actually familiar with my condo association and had installed numerous deadbolt locks on patio gate doors there. He asked me a few questions over the phone so he could be best prepared for the job: -what kind of keys/locks do I currently have -do I want my house key to work for the deadbolt, or do I want a different key -do I want a two-sided or one-sided key deadbolt On Monday, we had a very heavy rain, so Alex had to delay his appointment for about an hour because he would be handling power tools outside. First, I very much appreciated the phone call. He said he would take another house call and then visit my house, and he came by as soon as he could. Besides drilling a hole and installing the deadbolt, he fixed the latch that was on my door which had been bent. He installed some new screws and made some adjustments to the plate/latch. He said he normally vacuums the work area when finished, but since it was wet outside, he couldn't vacuum (no big deal, it was just some wood chips). As we were finishing up, Alex informed me of how to best care for this lock since it is regularly exposed to the elements--buy a silicone/teflon-based lock spray (no graphite, he insisted!) at a hardware store and give the key hole and latch mechanism a squirt once a month, more if needed. He also told me about why using WD-40 is a bad idea--essentially, it dries up and provides no lubrication long-term. (Homeowner tip: use an online calendar feature like Yahoo to send you email reminders of maintenance projects.) I asked about what other services he offers, and he can install safes up to 300 lbs. He also makes keys and does some work on security systems. I chose Accurate Locksmith and Security for several reasons: --Experience with installing deadbolt locks in my condo complex. --They have received very good reviews on Angie's List. --They were able to give me an estimate of time and money for the job. --How the owner handled the initial phone call put my mind at ease that they took my concern seriously. Wow! Alex is the best! He is so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and it shows! We recently purchased a property and Alex rekeyed all of our locks for us and repaired a sliding glass door lock that was broken. His pricing was great for what we needed. He didn't try to sell us more than we needed or overcharge us. He was here strictly to help us and because he loves what he does, not to scam us for a profit. Initially, when he inspected our sliding glass door lock, he thought it was just the hook that needed replacing, so he replaced the hook and told us to call him if we needed anything. Shortly after he left, the whole outer handle broke off [wasn't his fault, it was very old!]. He didn't have an exact replacement handle at the moment, but he knew he had something close that would work, so you know what he did? I went to Home Depot first to get the key made... after 20 minutes Home Depot said they didnt have a blank that would work... then went back and made one...and said "this will work"... It didn't.
