Let's not fool ourselves for even a moment that this is the most authentic Mexican restaurant. First, it is more Tex-Mex than Mexican and it is a chain restaurant, but overall, I was pleased with my lunch. Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant was started in 1989 in Amarillo, Texas and has grown to locations spread throughout nine states. That in itself is pretty impressive. Their food still rises above normal chain restaurants and the place has a great ambiance and vibe. I went with the enchilada and taco lunch special and overall, it was a great option. I think that it bears mentioning that our server was friendly and professional and only added to the overall experience. Nachos to me is a"get your hands in there" kind of dish, where the chips should be crispy, with different flavors and textures hitting your palet...this was disappointing to say the least. Awesome. It's really spacious on the inside, and the menu is huge. Something for everyone, with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Check out my menu picks. We had the pork medallions wrapped in bacon with charro beans and a chicken enchilada with mashed potatoes. It was epic! We also had the grilled Seabass with vegetables and cilantro lime rice. Exquisite. Located within the Hamilton Place mall shopping center, there are so many things to see and do around this area. You could easily spend a couple of hours just in exploring all of the cool retail shops and restaurants. The staff is very welcoming and warm. They make sure that you have everything you need and that your food is cooked perfectly. My husband said these are the best mashed potatoes he's ever had in his entire life. This place was truly a hidden gem for us. We were looking for some good Mexican food and while riding, saw this place and said let's give it a try. They were following COVID-19 procedures very good. They made us feel comfortable knowing they were doing good extra cleaning after every customer. Our server was ver friendly and helpful. She recommended our dishes and made sure our meal was what she said. Our meal concision grilled filet wrapped in bacon, grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon, rice and the best pinto beans. I told the server they need to sell Mexican cornbread with those. I ate those by themselves. Our steak was well seasoned and so tender. Overall, everything was great and we will be back. read more

I'm originally from Texas but have been living in Chattanooga since 2020. I've missed having good Tex-Mex food close by. Abuelo's is so wonderful and reminds me of home. I believe the chain started in Texas so the authenticity of the Tex-Mex makes sense. If you haven't been before, or had really good Tex-Mex, you can imagine Chuy's, (which I like) but a few levels up. I have ordered the enchilada platter, the Pork Tenderloin Abrigada (pictured), and bacon-wrapped shrimp. The food tastes very fresh, incredibly flavorful, and unhealthy... In a good way... Speaking of health, they also have vegan options that I'm looking forward to trying soon. A vegan quesadilla sounds tasty! If you are wondering about the service, my wife thought the service of our wait staff was pleasant and satisfactory. Anyway, I highly recommend it. I have read some of these negative reviews, and frankly I don't understand it, unless they tried on a really off night. My husband and ai travel over an hour to get to this restaurant, and it is well worth it to us! The food is consistently good! I almost always get the Pechuga con Calabaza with the Papas con Chile (in place of the rice - personal preference), which is excellent, and my husband typically gets the Pork Tenderloin Abrigada. The chips are always fresh, and you cannot beat their salsa verde! Great place, great food...well worth the trip! read more

(EI a million different ways to serve enchiladas, but only enchiladas). If you're a vegetarian, there aren't a lot of options for you here, either. Their thin crispy chips and salsa are by far the best we've had anywhere!! Unfortunately our local Abuelo's closed in Knoxville, Tn. I don't understand why, the place always seemed busy. Now we have to travel even further to Chattanooga, TN if we want to eat at an Abuelo's. An hour and a half away from home. Knoxville was a 49 minute drive for us but so worth it!! Decent Tex Mex. I especially liked that they offer 3 types of salsas with chips. For vegetarians and gluten-free eaters, they have a special menu just for you. Our service was a bit slow and small things were forgotten. One of my favorite things they offered were the Mexican mashed potatoes; however, they ran out so not everyone at my table was able to get some and the side was replaced with white rice. A few had ordered rice as an extra side; but the waitress was able to take it off the tab after we confronted the situation (she was understanding and very nice). I went here today and really did not enjoy my meal. I ordered the Mexican Stack based off of the server's recommendation. It is like a flat taco salad - how can you even mess that up? The ground beef was very greasy and salty and had a strange unpleasant flavor. There was some sort of cheese sauce drenched all over it that was made of Velveeta. The lettuce on top was not crunchy but was brown and wilted. It did not taste fresh and the whole dish was heavy and coated in grease. I requested more lettuce to brighten it up but the lettuce that was brought for me was brown. If I hadn't been here with colleagues I would have sent the entire thing back. It was gross. I will say that the chips and salsa were good. And some of the other people liked their meals. Mine was awful though - seriously. The cleanliness of the restaurant was also not acceptable - namely the womens restroom. read more

Wow...over a year ago this place was great. Good food, great service..so, wth happened? The last 3x we've been there in a couple months was absolutely aweful. The food quality has gone way down hill, what used to be fresh, is now tasting like it's been from a can, sitting out. I can go to the grocery store and eat right out of the can much better than that. When I ordered food, it was out in less than 5min which is actually pretty scary...the mixed drinks there too was just full of sugar and not much alcohol. The service is horrible, even when it was extremely slow. Almost walked out. In addition to make it worse I felt so bloated and practically stayed on the toilet all night this last time (and I've gotten the same exact food before). Was there for Cinco de Mayo and it was a great time. We were there during a non-peak time (2:30pm) was not that busy and we were seated immediately. Restaurant was clean and comfortable. Our waitress was on the spot and provided us with excellent service throughout or visit. The food was good! Drinks were good. Watched the manager for a while working hard and making his rounds and pitching in to help his staff. He came around to our table and inquired how our meal was. We have been to this restaurant several times and have never been disappointed. I wanted to do a review today because when we arrived there was a sign warning that staffing was critically low and please be patient. Our waitress Ashley was amazing, there were only 2 servers working and a mostly full dining room. She was on top of everything and we spoke with her about how busy she was. While if you looked closely you could see how tired she was, her service was as good as we have ever received. The food was great too. We wanted to reach out to the management and let them know how hard the staff is working. Please thank Ashley as well as the kitchen and bus person.
