I seen Dr Chen when he ran this facility and he was AMAZING!!!! BUT! How it's ran now by the new owners oh man smh... I had an appt arrived at the appointed time, Dr was running late due to a am meeting NOBODY thought of calling me to inform me he'd be an HOUR late?! What happened to common courtesy for patients? An then to SEE the Dr he's only in office 1x a wk! And then he's booked out for months! Cmon nowwwwwww reallllllllt this whole wanting to see a legitimate Dr, waiting months on months is just so f**** annoying and an inconvenience! This is why our urgent cares and emergency rooms are over packed! Dr's should be in the facility's EVERYDAY! This 1x a wk doesn't fly! As it is the nurse practitioners. My husband and I were referred to Dr. Chen by a friend from my work whose been going to Dr. Chen for about 12 years. His office is located in the Rancho San Antonio Medical Center. You can park at the main Urgent Care entrance where the pharmacy is. Once you enter the doors, turn right and his office is down the hall. My husband has been to see him a few times, but I haven't had a need to visit the doctor until yesterday. I was exercising and my ankle popped leaving it swollen and bruised. I definitely tore something. I made an appointment was told to come in at 9:45AM to fill out paperwork. I was brought into the back at 10:00AM to get weighed and have my blood pressure taken. The huge negative right now is the wait time. I waited alone in the exam room from 10:05-10:55AM (50 minutes). I was hoping to get out of there by 10:50AM because I had a meeting to go to for work, I texted my coworker at 10:30AM saying that I was probably going to be late, but ended up missing the meeting entirely. There was an article posted in the exam room about why patients wait so long for doctors so you can tell this must be common in this office. I was finally out of there around 11:30AM. Dr. Chen is pretty down to Earth and good at explaining things to you, but next time I make an appointment.. I'll have to prepare myself to being here for about 1.5-2 hours. However, my husband seems to have better luck. When he went to urgent care there was no doctor there yet (she was stuck in traffic) so he called Dr. Chen's office and was able to get the first appointment available that morning. This doctor is very friendly and is ok when you have minor issues but doesn't not go for testing you right away for things. Makes you wait and does not order test that could save your life. My husband died because he did not do any test and just ask him to wait by then it was too late. He died from Colon cancer. Update: After walking away from Chen's office with the same abdominal pain I started with I didn't know what to do. Last week it flared to a new level and I ended up in the emergency room. Turns out I had appendicitis and they removed my appendix within just a few hours of arriving. Chen didn't think it was appendicitis and ordered an abdominal ultrasound to look at my other organs. I told the ER doctor this who said that the ultrasound isn't a good way to look at the appendix and had me do a CT Scan instead which showed the appendicitis plain as day. I'm pain free now, thanks to modern emergency services, despite Chen's foibles. Find someone else to visit. Sometimes it's important. Sometimes your organs are threatening to burst and you should see a real doctor for that. read more

Quickly became addicted, I asked the dr for help. He said he wasn't prescribing me anymore. I didn't want more, i wanted to know what to do because you over prescribed me a dangerous medication. He would prescribe me 6 months at a time, that is a sure way to make someone dependent upon it. It becomes part of your lifestyle. Dr.Chen and his staff are AMAZING! Being a pharmaceutical rep I have called on and observed many doctors over the last 13 years. This office, hands down, is the best all the way around. I chose Dr.Chen to be my daughters physician, and my physician, when I was pregnant with her. He has taken amazing care of us in the last 8 years. He is kind, compassionate, thorough, and extremely knowledgable. He goes over every possible thing that is related to your symptoms and discusses with you why or why not he thinks that ailment is the cause. He will do all the necessary tests and give you literature for you to read when you leave. He is not a doctor who will over medicate you. If you're looking for someone to just write you a prescription, Dr.Chen is not your doctor. If he's giving you something it's because you NEED it. His main priority is your health and safety. A dangerous and irresponsible doctor. I went in for a spinal manipulation and one day later I had nerve related stroke. At the hospital they told me that he had injured a nerve while adjusting my neck. I am in the process of suing him for the permanent damage that he caused. My primary care doctor is pretty awesome. His front staff could be more friendly but hey I get it ... It's not easy working at a doctor's office. The amount of BS you have to go through from answering patient phone calls to authorizations and referrals ... Then dealing with insurance companies. Yeah I wouldn't be all smiles and sunshine all the time either. Lol. His medical assistants staff are great. They answer phone calls or returns phone calls promptly. Being that I'm also in the medical field, I appreciate their knowledge and show of compassion to other patients. The waiting room could be a little bit bigger though .. Or maybe not to double book the doctor so patients aren't complaining about the long wait. Dr. Chen is amazing. He talks to you in plain English. I've been a patient of Dr. Chen for a few years now, so this review is long overdue. Everyone here at the office are all super friendly and eager to help. Getting appointments is fairly reasonable and depending your condition, they'll put you in same day for a priority most of the time. Dr. Chen is extremely knowledgeable and if there's something he's not clear or requires a specialist, he'll refer you rather than giving you a false prognosis. One funny thing about Dr. Chen is he'll always send you home with some form of literature on what condition you may have. Gotta love Dr. Chen for his share of knowledge. read more

I really wanted to like this guy but after 3 or 4 appointments with him I decided that he is a real jerk. Terrible about answering questions. Terrible about communicating your diagnosis. Rude and condescending. Never says "hello" or "goodbye". Rushes through your appointment and does the bare minimum. Showed little care toward me as a patient, i felt like just a number. Writes you a prescription and pushes you out the door. When i tried to ask questions about my condition and further treatment he said, "You can't drag this out all day I have other patients waiting!". (he had only been in the room for 4 minutes) i said "im not trying to drag this out, i'm just trying to understand what is wrong." I never usually take time to do these reviews, but I figured I would to warn others. I have only seen Dr. Chen 3 times since 2017. The first visit was ok, but I left feeling strange about a few comments Dr. Chen made...he told me there are lots of good doctors closer to where I live & asked why am I driving the distance to his office. I thought maybe he just wanted to know why I selected him, so I didn't think too much into it until my next visit. The second visit I didn't feel welcomed at the office. I was told by the doctor if I need a referral for something I should let the girls at the front desk know to help expedite the paperwork. So at that point, I'm thinking why would I do that without seeing the doctor first and getting his recommendation to do so. After this visit, I was thinking about changing doctors because I just didn't feel this was a good fit. However, I still held on since I'm not a person that goes to the doctor often. My last time seeing Dr. Chen, I had a general conversation with him about feeling tired & fatigue. I stated that I was having trouble sleeping at night, but able to fall asleep during the day just fine. I expressed I think it could be due to stress & my baby because I've never had this problem. He suggested seeing a sleep doctor. After the visit, I noticed a change & I was able to rest better. I never went to see the sleep doctor because it was no longer an issue. Long story short, recently I changed my life insurance company. They requested my medical records from Dr. Chen's office. I was denied coverage because Dr. Chen stated in his report I may have a sleeping disorder. This is not right because I have NEVER been diagnosed with anything sleep related. Now I'm forced to go to a sleep doctor to gain clearance to obtain life insurance coverage. If I've never been professionally diagnosed with an issue this should have never been reported. I'm extremely upset about this & changed doctors. As a woman & minority, I somewhat feel like this is some sort of racial injustice. When I spoke directly with Dr. Chen about this situation, he told me how do we know you aren't just saying you don't have an issue now to get life insurance coverage. How rude & disrespectful to insinuate I'm not being truthful. I see good reviews, but sadly I didn't not have a pleasant experience. Beware! read more

I take my elderly mother to see Dr. Chen and have found him to be a great doctor. He spends more time with us than average doctors typically do and always answers our questions. We are pretty picky when it comes to doctors and have previously seen two other highly rated docs in the area who we did not like for various reasons but we've been pleased with Dr. Chen. He has been pretty flexible with us in thinking outside the box regarding several small issues as where other doctors were black and white. The wait time has always been fairly short which I appreciate as I have to take time off work to take my mom to her appointments and the office has been good at squeezing us in when my Mom isn't feeling well. Dr. Chen has a calm demeanor which I also appreciate and he thoroughly explains things in an easy to understand manner. I am thankful for Dr. Chen and the care he provides to my mom. read more

He is not condescending and actually makes you feel good as a parent and person (even when asking really annoying questions). My husband likes him because he's mater of fact and not pushy. I like him and his staff because my husband likes him and will actually go the Dr. because of Dr. Chen and because my kids receive top notch care. My kids like him because he talks to them!
