NOTE: I'm reluctant to write this review at all because now I see how Terrence responds to people's Yelp reviews, so please just read on and take this as data for yourself as you plan your move, whether it is tiny or large. I don't write tons of reviews but I really, really don't appreciate having anything in my home damaged or having someone yell at me for no reason. Although Terrence did not execute the move, he gave the job to another company and my experience with them was quite unpleasant. You can read about it at "Everydaymovers." The reviews there suggest that they might not be the best people to refer but I had no idea who was coming, just a "couple guys" who could do the job since he was not able to fit it into his schedule. I was in the middle of writing the reviews and Terrence did call to apologize and I really don't feel like getting an impassioned response here on Yelp, hence the 3 stars. It looks like from reading the reviews that you should insist on Terrence himself (or one of the other people mentioned as being great) or find other people yourself so that you and they can be directly accountable to each other. I've used Terrance and his movers a few times to pick up and deliver furniture that I bought (including one piece that turned out to be much heavier than I expected). He is friendly and a great communicator, is straightforward in pricing and honest about what he can or cannot do, and he knows how to get things done carefully and efficiently. read more

Have used Terrance and his men for my last 3 moves now (one of which was a fifth floor walk up!) and one at the beginning of Covid. They provided us with masks while they were moving the stuff and took the necessary precautions themselves so it felt very safe. Rather than just dump the furniture in our new space like some other people do, they asked where we wanted each piece of furniture and what position so we didn't have to move anything. these guys moved my new couch in, help me set it up, and litterally broke my old couch down to pieces and put on the street ( my front door had been made smaller in renovation, so the couch wasn't able to come out in one piece) all in under 2 hrs , and for a more than fair price. Absolutely horrible. Waited for 4+ hours and Terrence started ignoring our phone calls please do not give this man business. As you can see below Terrence does not run his business as any respectable businessman would. Instead of empathizing with his customers he decides to berate them and make it seem like he is the victim. Anyone with any semblance of intelligence would know that Nyc has traffic and June 30th does not equate to 4th of July weekend (traffic at 11 pm on a Thursday? Right.) I wish I had the luxury of telling my boss "sorry, I'm 6 hours late because I had other things to do and nyc has traffic and you didn't tell me you had more requests than what you are paying me to do". Unfortunately, I live in reality and when I'm expected to do something I do it as best I can or I make up for it. I wouldn't yell at my boss and make excuses because if I did, I would be fired. Fortunately for Terrence, he runs his moving business from his bedroom as best I can tell and this alternate reality allows him to hide behind a phone or computer and try to justify his actions as a terrible person and owner of a moving companyz Real business do not make excuses for their wrongdoings, they make amends. Instead of apologizing for what was an awful moving experience which did not end until 5 in the morning he decides to come up with a variety of excuses for why he was unable to run his business effectively. My review still stands, I would never recommend Terrence not only because he provides a horrible service but because he treats his customers like garbage and is not someone I would trust to run a business. I forgot to mention how he yelled at me on the phone for 15 minutes at 2 in the morning while he was laying in bed. Last thing I'll say is that the three guys working for Terrence (feel sorry for those guys) were absolute rockstars and my advice would be to find a new boss other than Terrence or start a moving company yourselves. The move was set for 1:30, they were there at 1:25. We moved a whole studio apartment across Brooklyn in 2.5 hrs. Would have been less if it wasn't for a snafu with the building super. They even made it so that we could ride with them to our destination. Usually I try to write some humorous anecdote in my yelp reviews, but here, it's not even necessary. Terrence is the best. Not only is he super friendly, professional, and fast, but he's INCREDIBLY good at what he does... I bought a couch off of craigslist and had Terrence help me deliver it (after he was suggested by the couch's owner) and based on the measurements, knew it would fit through the door. Unfortunately, after getting the couch to my apartment, the angle of the doorways to get it into my apartment were difficult with the couch's size. While I began to panic, Terrence totally kept his cool and helped me try to get it through my door for an HOUR. Regardless of the time, he stuck to the estimate he gave me on the phone a few days before and kept me laughing through the entire ordeal. I strongly recommend Terrence. He did a great job delivering a large dresser from Brooklyn to Manhattan. He kept me updated about the time of the delivery and was very careful during transit. A number of flights of stairs were involved in the delivery and Terrence made sure the dresser got to where it needed without a scratch. I have had negative experiences with other movers in the past, but Terrence was definitely not one of them. Would work with him again if I needed any other items moved/delivered. read more

I honestly joined Yelp just to be able to give these guys a great review. My girlfriend and I moved from Astoria to Jersey City. All communication before the move was fast, clear, and helpful. On the day of the move, two gentleman showed up right on time, and got to work, quickly moving all of our stuff down 2 floors...they then drove the stuff (and us) to Jersey City, and just as quickly hauled all of our stuff FOUR FLOORS with the greatest of care. On a side note, the van ride over provided opportunity for charming conversation, and made what could have been an awkward, uncomfortable ride fun! All in all, these guys charge an amazingly affordable rate, the personnel are hard workers (and good company), and I couldn't have been more satisfied. I WILL use Above Movers again the next time I need a mover. read more

Terrence, I know this is a little late, but better late than never! Months ago, my former landlord/roommate informed me that she would have to sell her condo because her job was letting her go. It pained me really, because I don't think I'd been living in NYC quite 6 months and the plan was to stay in Jackson Heights 2 - 4 years. As I began my 5-month apartment search, I hit up Yelp to find a REASONABLE mover. I bookmarked Above Movers and left it at that. Fast forward to August... Finally found an apartment barely within my meager budget. With 5 weeks to spare before we had to be out of the condo. I contacted Terrence and we set up a moving time within a week of my new lease. He was so flexible, cuz I had to change the day from a Saturday to a Monday. Evidently the condo had a funky f'd up policy about moving Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm. Seriously, do MFer's not work or something?!?! Anyway... Terrence was REASONABLE, timely, efficient, professional, friendly and HONEST. He moved me out of my old room, across the LIE and into my new apartment in LESS than an hour and a half! Even though his partner showed up for their next move, he helped just the same, and Terrence still charged exactly what he quoted for a one-man job. I couldn't have been happier. I gave him a decent tip, and some ice-cold water (I mean, it was like 90 degrees.) Had we the time, I would have fed these guys too - the midwestern, southern-rooted girl that I am. Terrence will definitely be handling my next move. By the way, he's got a hookup on decent ACs and I think some other appliances. I'll be following up with that too. read more

I moved yesterday. Received Terrence information from a friend. I am disappointed in the service. Here is why: - Booked with Terrence and he didn't show up to move me- sent others with a van that was not equipped for the move. He said the date was open when I booked- but he went on a different job. - Communication of the information provided like list of items was not given to the movers or address to move in location - Hour late to start move - Damaged items - Items left behind on the street next to building - 1 hour and 45 minutes between locations (moved 12 blocks) -Arguing between the movers on how to move items - Dissemble bed frame and taking a top off a table- add an additional hour to your move. They took apart the entire table because I believed they couldn't fit it in the van otherwise (I was not there for them loading into the van- as I was walking to the new location to meet them and I knew it would take me longer). - wraps and tools- I had to provide most of it (they managed the wrap for the TV). - walls in new location marked up from furniture being bumped. Items were dragged on the floor. - estimated 2-3 hour job took 8 hours (450 foot studio - both buildings had elevators that were less than 5 steps from unit). I started to help move as I didn't see the dolly show up until later in the move. In the end, I wish I would have gone with a different company or had Terrence there to witness. He was all about covering his costs and not having accountability for the people he sent for the move. He was very judging and labeling me over the phone and he had never met me nor was physically present to see the service that was given. I did get the receipt for the move and his movers did cover the Uber x for the items that were left behind ($20). Tips if you use this company: make sure Terrence is there, stay with them through the entire process, wrap everything yourself, make sure to watch everything that comes in/out of the door to account for everything, if you are looking for a deal- it may not happen (I paid double what I thought I would pay) be okay with the possibility of damaged items. And if you have a problem, don't expect them to fix it or give customer service without being treated poorly to get something. And be ready to follow up a lot. I want to believe Terrence is a good guy and can do a good job from the referral of my friend- but I didn't get that version. He ended the conversation with "good riddance". After I paid him the amount and held up my end from the beginning. I have never had this bad of a move or been treated like this for a service I am paying for and I have moved 6 times in state and out of state. I hope this helps for anyone looking for a mover. If you follow the tips- I believe you will have a better experience than I did. I wish I had a different outcome as this was stressful and moving is stressful enough as it is. read more

I hired Above Movers at the last minute last Saturday after my scheduled movers decided at the last minute to tell me they were going to show up 2 hours late. Above Movers really came through and did a great job. My boyfriend and I were moving in together and they managed to get all our stuff in their van (more than a bedroom each worth of furniture and boxes) in only two trips! They were polite, professional and fairly quick. I highly recommend them! read more

I was moving a dining room set from my house to my mom's house in the same neighborhood, and was anxious about having people I don't know in my house, with all these crazy stories in the news! But right off the bat, Terrance's professionalism, and follow-ups confirming the appointment put me at ease right away, and when he showed up at my house, I saw the nice van, and he was a very sweet man, and I was immediately at ease. He and his colleague, Willie, got to work right away in taking apart the furniture, wrapping and taping to ensure a smooth ride in a quick and efficient manner. They get to my mom's house - she's an elderly lady - and they were very sweet to her and proceeded to re-set-up the furniture in her house, and even took her old furniture and placed it on her curb for the next day's garbage pick-up, as she requested. These guys were professional, efficient and their fees were very reasonable. I absolutely recommend them for any local 'man with van' needs. This is the best out there!! read more

He's very communicative and we were able to fit all of my stuff from one bedroom plus and extra bookshelf into his van. I used this service when moving my belongings out of my storage facility in downtown Brooklyn to my apt. in Crown Heights. The workers arrived at the storage facility earlier than planned, but were professional and efficient when moving my items up to my new apartment (a 3rd floor walk-up). They literally are a 'man w/ a van' type of service so know that if you're stored-item capacity surpasses a 5x5 or 5x10 unit worth-of-stuff, it may take more than one trip to get everything or you may have to let them know ahead of time so they can get a bigger truck or u-haul for that job. With that said, I would completely use them again. They were some of the nicest and most professional movers I ever met. read more

I am normally not a negative review writer but I have to write this because of the way Terrance handled the end of my move. I was moving from the city to Jersey City and my husband was moving to Jersey City from DC. So basically we had to have two moves, I found Terrance through yelp and with his rates being so low, I booked him immediately. My husband's move was on Thursday and mine was Friday. Thursday's move went smoothly, but the movers were an hour late. Not a big deal for us but just wanted to note that for those in a crunch for time. Second day was the main day. The same two guys came on time. We had rented a Uhaul so just needed to rent the guys to help load and unload. About an hour into the move, one of the guys got sick and had to leave immediately. Thank goodness my husband was in good shape bc he ended up loading 85% of my boxes/furniture with the other mover, Rigel. I called Terrance, he said that he was on his way to help load and unload at the new apt. After we loaded up the van we waited.. then waited some more. My husband grabbed us some pizza and then after we ate we waited some more. After an hour and a half after we loaded the truck I got impatient and we decide to just go to Jersey city. We told Terrance, he said he would try to make it there and of course he didn't. So my husband and Rigel moved everything into the apt themselves. I called Terrance towards the tail end because by then it was around 4pm. We had started the move at 10:30am. I told him we were finished and asked him why he never came. He brushed me off and casually said "you're moved in now so its fine" Which then just irritated me because as a business owner, especially if YOU are supposed to make it, be accountable? I said "it would've been nice if you would've called me to let me know you weren't coming?" He replies "it's fine, look, I'm down one one man bc he got sick and you moved in after all so i don't see what the big deal is. I said "well if it wasn't for my husband doing all the moving, I would be in a bind, not to mention i hired 2 men not one." I said a simple apology/acknowledgement of accountability would've really been nice because honestly if i didn't have my husband help, my move wouldn't have happened. And that's all I said, "I just wish you would be accountable for this messup" yet he just never ever owned up to the fact that he messed up and just kept saying "its fine, its fine" Not sure how you run a business speaking to clients like that. Okay, now there is a positive part to this review, the silver lining was Rigel, he was a godsend. Totally AMAZING guy, positive, did the work of 2 men, he went above and beyond and never complained. He even helped us put our sofa back together. I would hire him in a heartbeat and honestly think he's too good to work for this company but that's just my opinion. If you do choose to move with these guys, def ask for Rigel. Can't get any better then him! Terrance is lucky to have this guy. Overall would I recommend my friends to move with these guys? Absolutely not, BUT I would definitely give them Rigel's number. read more

I needed to move only queen mattress+TV+TV stand from Manhattan to Queens, and I called number of movers including those listed here on Yelp, however most of them have either min that they charge or they have a flat fee that again is not justified for 3 little pieces I had. I was about to give up and move these few things myself till I called this company. They have reasonable prices, and on top of this, they executed flawlessly-came on time, were professional and friendly. Great choice for somebody who has just few pieces to move. read more

He came highly recommended by the antique store on Court Street & 2nd Place in Carroll Gardens. I had the unfortunate experience with using above movers for my move to brooklyn terrence sent over two guys who were rude and unprofetionalone older gentleman got cut and bled all over my apartment the other gentleman was very rude and intimidating nevertheless they were late didnt have any movers equpment and damage my couch with blood terrence had to come and take the driver out of my house nevertheless I was dissatisfied and terrence brushed me off I was just so intimadated by the driver I didnt dare say my mothers ring was missing. Terrence is the real deal, in terms of actually being a man, with a van. Most companies that call themselves that are actually larger companies with multiple movers and vehicles. The fact that terrence keeps his operation small and simple gives you a few advantages: 1) Communication 2) Cost 3) Convenience. By far the best moving experience I have had. Movers arrived right on time and told me not to worry just relax. They were extremely polite and efficient. Not what I expected from guys with a van. They fit everything in the van and it was organized. They even had room for me so I would not have to waste money on an uber. He helped me out yesterday when none of the other man and van outfits would move anything because of the snowstorm, and his quote of 70 dollars to move a small daybed was 50 less than the next best. Terrence and Donovan are amazing! I was being impatient and didn't want to wait for my boyfriend to have time to pick up our new media cabinet. I called Above Movers around 11 am that morning, and they found a way to fit me in before the end of the day (and they had several jobs that day!) They met me on Staten Island at the store I had bought the piece at, picked it up and delivered it to my condo safely and carefully, making sure to transport it without damage to the unit or to the walls in my building. There was a slight issue with the payment because the owner didn't have a working app for credit cards and we had to scramble to find our checks.
