I've moved with Prime Movers three times now--a large 3-bedroom move, a medium 1.5-bedroom move, and a small 1-bedroom move (all walkups). Whenever I emailed asking for a quote, Bobby always got back to me very quickly. They're often able to fit an insanely impressive amount of items and furniture into their moving vehicle. They are lightning fast to come in, assess, shrink wrap large items, and get them out the door. Everything from couches to vinyl records and dishes have stayed in one piece. After being pretty badly ripped off by another moving company when I first arrived in New York, it's a relief to know that Bobby and his team are honest, work hard as hell, and charge fair rates. These movers were wonderful to work with throughout the entire process. I'm extremely picky about who I let into my home, and I would definitely recommend these guys and use them for my next move. Bobby and Dave were great. One of them spoke with me at length to help me think through a stressful situation that my landlord had caused. The staff were quick to respond to all of my questions via phone and email. I emailed them many times and they always responded quickly. The move itself went so smoothly. My roommate and I moved everything from our two bedroom apartment in Williamsburg (on the fourth floor) to our new apartment in Prospect Heights (also on the fourth floor). They finished the entire move within less than 2.5 hours. They were kind and courteous too. One of the movers accidentally broke one of my roommate's picture frames and reimbursed her immediately. I was worried about moving my apartment with such short notice until I heard about this company. Their van fit my apartment in one load, which surprised me. They were very organized and careful with my property too! Moving my record collection is not easy, but they got it done without a scratch on a wall. It's best to not overload boxes (like I did). Paying for an extra box is completely worth the hassle especially if you live on the fourth floor (like me). We were moving crosstown, less than a mile. I did the thing where Yelp let's companies bid and they had the best rate by far. They were really nice and they wore masks. It was raining all day, and we certainly through some curve balls at them and they powered through like champs. I would recommend them if you have a not so complicated crosstown move. read more

Prime Movers should change their name to Optimus Prime Movers because they were so damn efficient you'd have sworn a Giant, Bad Ass robot was helping you move. Seriously, these guys aren't messing around. I scheduled a move for the first of June (busy ass moving day) and they showed up right on time. They didn't even bother with small talk, they just walked up the stairs and started getting to it. Now, I'm a pretty smart guy, but even I make mistakes from time to time, and this time was one of those times. I pretty much low balled them as far as estimating how much stuff me and my lady had...they didn't even flinch. They made two trips between apartments and STILL kept within the given time frame and cost. Not only that, but they kept a killer attitude the whole time. I seriously want to write a novel loosely based around the excellence Prime Movers provided...I'd title it "the excellence prime movers provided." I'd be the main character but I'd be talking about how great an experience moving can be when Prime Movers handles the heavy lifting. Good job, fellas....I can't recommend you enough. When I got the word that my Co-op was FINALLY ready for me to move, i literally had a matter of days to pack and arrange for my move. Prime Movers took on the job. I have moved in the past, but back then it was only a bedroom. Now, years later I was moving a 1 bedroom to a studio. The packing was daunting and on moving day, i was anxious and worried about the whole ordeal. Moving is stressful. They arrived a little behind schedule but traffic on a weekday morning is annoying. But the moment they arrived, Bobby, Danny, and Chai came up with the dollies and went right to it. In 20 minutes all of the boxes were out of the apartment. Not having tools left them with the task of breaking down the furniture. This is time consuming. Obviously, when i move again (Oh Lord help me) I will plan ahead and have the furniture taken apart ahead of time. Also, i sorely underestimated the amount of things I had to move. Bobby amazed me at how he got all of my furniture onto the truck...even strapping my bed frame onto the top of the truck. Then once we got to my new apartment, the skies darkened and it poured. I watched from my windows as the skies opened up and pretty much lost my mind feeling so out of control over the situation. Despite the rain, the so-called damage was little to non-existent. A few things got wet but nothing was damaged. Each of these guys were awesome. Together they make for the perfect formula in making a move painless. Bobby is serious. But he gets things done. Danny is the funny guy and Chai is the chill one. Every time I needed it, Danny cracked a joke and Chai reassured me that everything will work out. They were great with my dog who pretty much thought they were there to play with her... And after working in unbearable heat, followed by an unexpected thunderstorm, getting soaked, they were still all smiles. I have totally unpacked and not a thing was damaged. I hate moving. Yes I know, nobody says, "Boy I love shifting house!" But when you're stressed, packing, sweaty and anxious, what you need are strong, reliable movers. These guys were awesome! My original movers disappeared on me and it was a day before I was set to move (took off work, everything all packed, you know the drill) so I was in a bind. I contacted a few different movers - and Prime got back to me via email right away to confirm a time that worked for me. They got all my stuff out within 30 min (maybe less) and that included deconstructing the bed, wrapping furniture, etc. My new place is a flight up and they didn't complain once and the move was done in less than an hour and a half. Most painless, stress free move I've ever experienced. Saw some negative remarks re: Bobby but I though he and the other two guys were all great and easy going. I'd highly recommend them in a second especially because their price is the most competitive (aka lowest) I've seen for moves in Wburg/Gpoint. read more

These movers rock! Their name alone is great. It's also the same name as a song by The Leather Nun, so I had to call them. Their fee was the cheapest compared to the competitors that also got high ratings on Yelp, and they were excellent. The Prime Movers were smart, friendly, funny, had entertaining stories, and much better manners than most New Yorkers. They are totally cool creative dudes. All of my crap was well-cared for throughout all stages of the truck stuffing and unstuffing. A nasty snow storm at the end of January derailed our moving schedule, and the Prime Movers were flexible enough to plan a revised moving date. The head of the company was thorough and easy-going in his communication, and mindful in his status updates as we planned around the bad weather. Model customer service! The movers were on-time and had useful supplies (rope, blankets, and shrink wrap rolls). Their van does not have any logos on it, so you can pretend its your friends moving you in case your uptight building has any issues with movers. I will totally hire these guys again if I have to move (which I hope I won't have to do soon). read more

I had to make a last-minute change to my moving time and hired this company after my first mover was unable to change times. Even though they were late by half an hour, I didn't mind as they called to inform me that they would be running behind due to an issue with the truck rental company. It was nice to know the status as, on moving day, stress can be running a bit high trying to coordinate everything. Once they arrived, the two guys I had were incredibly quick and pleasant to be around. They even let me jump in the truck with them to my new place. Loading and unloading took only about 2 hours and they didn't complain once about the searing 90 degree + heat. I have used these guys twice in the past week, and both moves turned out to be on point. Bobby responded to a quote request within minutes and the final price turned out to be as expected, overall very reasonable and cheaper than three other places I contacted. I would recommend reading their policy write-up on their website thought, just to avoid any miscommunications. They helped me out with a full bedroom move in the beginning of the month. And a week later, I contacted them again to move in a new bed frame/box spring/mattress. The guys were friendly and chill, showed up on time, and were super efficient. They also helped to bag and tape up the old mattress and bring it from the third floor walk up down to the curb. I emailed Prime movers after my original movers cancelled and I was in a bind. Bobby got back to me with a response within 5 minutes and offered a better rate than my original mover. I was very impressed with the quick response and after a very thorough phone estimate I decided to book... Bobby and Sean showed up on time and wasted no time in getting the move started...they padded and shrinkwrapped all my big furniture, including my mattress! They handled my boxes with care and grace and Bobby helped me bag up loose items that I hadn't finished packing. In the end, I still had a bunch of unpacked stuff which they both assisted loading into an uber because they were too fragile to go in truck and they were both VERY nice to me the entire time, even though I didn't have everything together. They loaded up my one bedroom in under an hour and and once we were at the unload they seemed to just breeze past me , up the stairs, never skipping a beat...I had told them it was 2 flights but was actually 3 flights . They eagerly unloaded the truck in under 40 minutes, never complained about the extra flight or even try to charge a surcharge. All together they moved me from Bay Ridge to Sunnyside in under 3 hours. I was dazzled by how fast and efficient the move went, their demeanors stayed upbeat the whole time and completed the move with zero damage or hassle. I have many times and it has always been very stressful but Prime Movers helped me move for the first time with ease and finesse. These guys are some the best, most professional movers you can get for the money. Love Prime Movers! I called them for a recent move from Crown Heights to Greenpoint and they were absolute champs. Yours truly gave them a preliminary estimate of stuff that was, oh, maybe, 10-15 boxes short. And I forgot to include the bike. And the giant futon frame. Because when you're moving it makes you realize just how much crap you own. Totally my fault, and totally worried that they wouldn't get everything in the truck. I honestly don't know how they did it, but the three guys worked some serious moving fan Tetris magic to squish everything in the truck. They were good sports about the extra stuff and moved everything faster than I would have expected up three flights of stairs. Small problem was that they were a little late on our scheduled time but it all worked out. I liked that Bobby called me afterwards to see how everything went and welcome me to the neighborhood! This is my first review after being on Yelp forever and it is worth it. I was in a bind. I needed to get rid of my piano by the next day because I was moving out. Someone bailed out on me at the last minute. Robert responded right away and set it up for the next morning. Him and his two other cool crew guys came and moved that heavy ass piano out. The family piano that was given to me was on its death bed to the dump because no one could find movers to help. Luckily a family friend reached out when Robert and his crew came who wanted it. They didn't mind to take the piano to a location about 10 blocks away and gave me a discount. It was not an easy move but they made it happen. This was great, we hired them for a small job and most movers don't do it without a minimum amount of hours but they didn't care it was just a small thing. They were fast, energetic and had an excellent attitude. In-and.out, very effective, very respectful and positive attitude is something that sometimes you don't find in more "uniformed looking companies" I think if you wanna do small jobs and they need to be fast you gotta hire them, although maybe they would handle a whole move amazingly, I just haven't tried them for that read more

These guys were the best! They were even thankful that we had our stuff lined up along the wall and got the moving even easier. They gave everything the same care and attention - from my antique credenza down to the ikea sofabed that they had to disassemble to get out the door. There was not a scratch or ding in anything, and was careful taking in the stuff into the new apartment. They quoted me a 2 1/2 hr move from Astoria to Jackson Heights and got the job done in 1 hour and 45 minutes! The actual move was flawless. These guys are nice, professional and FAST. I took off one star because their organizer said they'd be at our place around 130-2pm to move, and then double-booked them so they didn't arrive until ~3pm. So be wary on that. Not a deal breaker but still. But the actual movers have HUSTLE. Really nice guys who did back-breaking work without a lunch because of the lateness (found that out halfway through!). We moved a 2BR with loads of stuff from Greenpoint about 30 minutes away in 3 hours exactly (which was quoted). They were really nice and I'd use them again - they really problem-solved to get basically everything into a 12-foot van. I never in a million years would have thought they'd have fit everything, but they did. The emails beforehand to plan were very curt and short but don't let that fool you. UPDATED REVIEW, January 2016: TWO AND A HALF YEARS after I used this company, they contacted me via Yelp to remove my 3 star review below on the basis that one of their employees was very sick and it was also a very cold day. I only noticed this message six months later and replied that I would not remove the review as it was an honest and accurate account of my experience. They then replied to me a few days ago asking me to stop contacting them immediately as their message was from six months ago and it was clear I didn't want to continue the conversation. Hold on. Why would you contact someone TWO AND A HALF YEARS after the event, and then tell me that because I wasn't willing to remove my review, I've to not contact them again? They have loads of five star reviews, clearly plenty of people are very happy with them. So why contact me years later to remove an old 3 star review that reflected a really poor performance from whom I was told was the boss that day? You're a removal company, you remove furniture, not reviews. ----- ORIGINAL REVIEW: All started off really well and it was a big move - took about 3.5 hours from two storage rooms to an apartment six floors up via a small elevator with three men. Nothing was broken in the move but the very last piece of furniture to come up the lift was an old, round wooden table that fitted into the lift downstairs but it was a struggle to get it out at the top. The owner, Bobby, completely lost the plot and was shouting at the other two guys and acted like a tired child who needed a snack. I appreciate it's hard work and he was feeling sick, but he's a professional and it's his job to do his job professionally. The result was clearly pissing off his two colleagues, irritating me and in turn scratching my table because he pushed and shoved it through a tight space rather than thinking about how it could be maneuvered out the small space. He spent a lot of time asking, "how old is this table, is it an antique" in an irritating way as he was frustrated rather than finding a solution to the problem despite his colleagues and me offering suggestions. He just lost it at the end of a long afternoon which is understandable but not for someone who is a professional mover. Aside from that I was happy, it was reasonably priced and a big job was done in just over three hours so I was thankful for their help. He just needs to keep his cool when things get stressful as that's all part of the job he's chosen to do and not to pass that stress onto his colleagues and clients. read more

Robert, the owner is very hostile. As soon as he came into our apartment he started screaming and yelling when he saw some extra boxes and couple of extra chairs. This is because they work with the tiniest junk truck that doesnt even close properly. I've worked with movers before who charges by the hour, and never had any issues for having extra items. I was yet apologetic as I had limited options then. He decides to leave behind the extra items and I had to rehire another company for the following day. If I had any requests or concerns, he gets upset. His workers who were much nicer than him, had to request me to not to talk or make any requests as he doesn't like it. After move was complete and they left, I ended up finding they assembled my bedroom set incorrectly and scratched some of the pieces. Because of his behaviour I didn't even want to deal with him. Will definitely not be using his services in the future and will not refer anyone either. Anyone hiring him make sure you give him the exact list of items or be prepared to face his hostility. Update: *so quick to respond back to cover up his reputation. I am no way a competitor and used your services only once. I will present yelp with proper evidence showing the services that you provided if they reach out. This is not the first time you have verbally attacked someone for having extra items because you know they have very little options last minute. I hired Prime Movers (Bobby and David) on 2/12 to move a one bedroom apartment from Greenpoint to Williamsburg. Fair warning: Their phone and email skills are not so great, but do not judge them on their communications skills. They responded to my initial request right away and confirmed our appointment 24 hours before the move. Our appointment was for 10:30am and the fellas arrived exactly on time and ready to work. I booked their 4 hour flat rate for $200, and I think we only took a little over 3 hours. They moved everything quickly and safely and were delightful company. They plastic wrapped my couch, desk, and wardrobe to make sure they didn't get damaged. They also moved some furniture down to my storage unit without an additional charge. I had a pretty bad experience with "College Educated Movers" the last time I moved (the moving charge almost doubled by the end of the move), but Prime Movers didn't try to pull any of that stuff with me. Another warning: Their van isn't a typical moving size van so we did have to do two trips. Luckily, my new place is less than a mile from the old one, but this may be a problem if you live farther away. My move was quick, easy, and affordable. No complaints here. These guys are heroes! We had to move an oversized reception desk and hit a snag when they got to the building to drop it off. **Since I expect the owner to question the veracity of this review, I have posted evidence of our communication: https://goo.gl/kxMij7 The numbers (e.g. [1]) correspond to the screenshot titles** After I signed my new apartment's lease two days prior to the move in date, I called over a dozen companies looking for someone to accommodate me on such a short notice. I initially left a voicemail with this company and immediately received a text reply asking me how I can be helped. After realizing that the owner/manager, Robert, hadn't listened to my voicemail, I didn't appreciate him not paying complete attention to the person on the phone quote [1]. We agreed on a date/time and I sent an email with the pertinent information, including a "list of items" as he requested (more on this soon). Thirty minutes had passed since the first confirmation and he was already trying to change the date [2]! At this point, I assumed that he had overbooked that Friday and realized that I had a lot more stuff than expected. I voiced my doubt about him being able to finish the job, but he assured me that "we're good" [3]. My main source of misery stemmed from the "list of items" I had emailed him initially (notice the qualifiers "big" and "approximately") [7]. Every moving company I've ever used in the past had sent out a representative to perform a walkthrough and provide an estimate; however, this company did not do that. I mistakenly assumed that an hourly rate implied a walkthrough was unnecessary. After all, the concept of hourly labor is based on total time spent performing work, not on how much work is to be done. I was VERY wrong! Come moving day, Robert berated me for not mentioning I had two vacuums, a workout bench, two weights, two lights, and other miscellaneous items not included in the email. He frantically paced through my living room asking me why I didn't tell him about these "extra" items. I calmly explained that my initial email covered what I subjectively considered were the "big" items. If he expected a full account of every item in my apartment, then why not simply ask for it? Didn't he read the parts of my email that clearly stated "big" and "approximately"? I had assumed that his truck can handle a one bedroom apartment move and that the list was just for time estimation purposes. Since the list of items I provided come in all shapes and sizes, it would have been wise if he had asked for rough dimensions or a photo to help plan out the space/time needed. Since he didn't ask for that degree of specificity, my assumption was quite rational. To be fair, I forgot to include the bench in my initial "big items" list; however, I was also 30% below the box count approximation. Who would expect to provide a complete inventory of their apartment to a moving "professional"? Once again, he quoted me an hourly rate! Expecting the customer to do all the planning is extremely unprofessional. Even worse is blaming the customer for your shortcomings, which he did not hesitate to do with his go to phrase, "You didn't tell me!" After I unnecessarily apologized for not "telling" him about the "extra" items on what we agreed would be a time-based job, I realized that his intent all along was to pressure me into accepting surcharges! Once I suggested that I would pay him extra money to complete the move, he immediately changed his tune and quickly quoted an extra $150. Even though I was seething at his disrespectful attitude, I eagerly accepted because I had to turn in the keys that day and I didn't have time to find another company or do it myself. He also required me to stand out by his truck while they were working because he parked in front of a fire hydrant. I didn't mind helping out, but to use his favorite phrase: he "didn't tell me!" I could've had a friend there to help watch his van [8]. Had this terrible experience ended at this point, I still wouldn't have written this review. The kicker was that he DID NOT move all of my stuff!!! Reviews such as Laura's [9], with her 10-15 box overage including a bicycle and a giant futon frame, were the complete opposite of my experience. You could probably imagine my reaction when he said that he couldn't help me finish moving out because he had to "respect his customer's time" - I don't think he realized the blatant irony in those words. Another point to consider is Robert's lack of communication etiquette. If you're going to use a personal phone for business after hours, don't get upset at the customer! Please read the exchange [3-6]. Both of Robert's assistants were great workers. I still tipped them and provided cold bottled water during the move because they were very courteous and tried their best despite Robert's apathy. Still planning on using Prime Movers because no one else is available? Record everything in your place and share that video instead of complying with Robert's vague "list of items" requirement. read more

I called this company as my friend checked around for me. She told me that this company quoted the lowest price for what I needed--moving cross-country to New York. She forwarded the online quote to me. I was impressed that, in the day it took me to follow up, the company wrote to inquire if I was going to book. That same day, I called the company. After explaining what I needed, a man told me that he needed a set time, as end of July/early August was a busy time. I told him I understood, so I offered a set time on the following Monday. He told me that he couldn't as he was discussing a move with another client. I explained again: Friday would NOT be a set time, Monday would be. At that point, he told me to find another company because he did not believe I could give him a set time. I explained AGAIN, and he started to cut me off and speak more loudly. After five minutes of me asking questions (which he did not answer directly), he FINALLY told me that the job Monday could be a much more lucrative job. THIS was the reason he didn't want to commit. I was fine with this, but confused why he did not explain that at the onset. When I suggested he should have told me that earlier and saved us all the arguing, he got more belligerent saying "we have nothing more to talk about" and "I do not know why we are still on the phone". I told him I understood and respectfully told him that he should consider being clearer with his clients when explaining things, he told me loudly, "I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU ANYTHING. You need to find another company." The next major insult came when he saw my (first) negative review here. He wrote me a long e-mail (he must have looked up my e-mail from my profile) where he 1) questioned why I would need to write a bad review, 2) blamed me for causing him problems, 3) tried to use his commitment to a sick child as reason for him being less than courteous, and 4) used information about my job that he found on the internet to try to manipulate me to remove my review. At the end of all this, he apologized "if" he upset. Then, he reported my bad review to Yelp and had it removed. This is why I am writing a more complete review, following their guidelines, so it should not be removed. read more

I've had two completely different experiences with Prime Movers. Based on my first experience it would have been 5 stars, but my second experience was only 1 star worthy...which lands me at a 3. My first move with Prime went smoothly, without a hitch. The two guys who came to move me were friendly and efficient. They managed to move me in only about 2 hours using just a van. My second and most recent move couldn't be more different. They were running late from a previous move- which was not a big deal for me. However, when they arrived, Bobby, the owner, was apparently overwhelmed from the previous move and from organizing other moves. So, he decided to take it out on me, my roommate, and my boxes. The lack of professionalism was ridiculous. I had originally told him my roommate and I were going to try to double up the move- I asked if this would be a problem and he said no. As soon as he arrived we got berated for her having too much stuff and for some of it being in bags. He claimed I never email him what she was moving (although I was never instructed to do so). Despite trying to plan ahead with him, he only allowed 2 hours for our move, which wasn't nearly enough. He took out his anger by aggressively handling my boxes (which ended in a few broken glasses and picture frames- not even worth dealing with him to get my items replaced, he's not worth the energy). As if moving isn't stressful enough, he perpetuated the situation every chance he got. If you own a business, you should able to handle your customers with respect and courtesy. And, seriously, if you own a moving service, why are you surprised that on a Saturday (that also happens to be the last day of the month), things are going to be busy? Needless to say, I won't be using them anymore- which is unfortunate, because all of the employees are great. If you book a move with Prime, just cross your fingers you don't have to deal with Bobby. read more
