We have only had a brief association with Able Roofing but extend our highest rating to them. During the last storms, we had an area of our old composite shingle roof blow off. After several calls to various companies, saw Able's listing (high marks) on Yelp and gave them a call. Absolutely Fantastic...I have a large house in San Anselmo with a roof that started springing leaks during the last powerful storm. I needed a new roof as soon as possible. There was ONE clear day between storms. Jon and his crew arrived at 7:30 am, removed the old composite roof, repaired damage and installed the new roof with gutters and cleaned the property by 5:00 pm. It's now raining five hours later. I called to get a bid. Turns out, the don't do bids. What they do is come out ready to work, give you an estimate, then expect you to say yes or no right then, and then they start work. I can see how this saves wasted efforts on their end, but I don't like feeling pressured to approve work with no comparisons, especially since the repair was not critical at the moment. Honesty, I don't like to complain and was very hesitant to share my negative experience. It's been about 9 months since I had Able replace our roof. Although our new roof looks beautiful, I am still to this day, finding large roof staples, nails, and old roof debris all around the front, back and side yards. I now wish I had saved and taken pictures of all the old, rusty staples, well over 100 in total so far. We are spending more time at home now with the shelter in place order and just found this nail coil in our shrubs. Enough is enough! Able was careless, messy and irresponsible. They knew we have children and dogs and their lack of project follow-up to ensure the safety of their clients shows their unprofessionalism. read more

I had a great experience with Able Roofing. Yes they are busy and yes I had to wait a couple of months for their schedule to free up so they could do my job... but it was worth the wait. I had a number of roofers quote on the job (tar and gravel flat roof in Mill Valley) and although Jon wasn't the lowest quote, I felt he would do the best job. Jon's team found some dry rot and had to replace some boards. They also needed to replace the rain gutters. Although that meant some additional work and the job price was increased, I felt that he was fair and honest about it... and even with the additional work the final price came out to be lower than some of the other quotes I had received. read more

Wow, I can't compliment any highly and recommend this company enough! They have integrity - professionalism - promptness - friendliness - honesty and open 7 days a week, etc. We have some water markings on the ceiling and called Jon on Sunday at 3pm. Jon responded right away and scheduled an inspection, estimate and needed repair within seconds for the first thing on Monday. Then, their great technician Leon arrived at 9am on Monday; did a very thorough investigation and told us that the water marking is old and actually from an older repair left by another company from years ago. Therefore, we shouldn't have to worry about it; and charged us nothing. OMG! This is the top top top roofing company and there is no wonder that they got all of the 5 Star Yelps. We had some water stains in the bedroom of our rental property so we flew in from Chicago to get estimates from 4 roofers. One never returned our calls, one was a no show and one spent 10 min walking around the roof before coming back and saying our vent pipe was cracked. It wouldn't take long to seal it up, all for $350. We also asked about the gutter and the guy said he'd email us the estimate that night. Then there was Able Roofing. Jon was the only one who got all Sherlock Holmes on us. He saw the vent pipe and said it was fine. If it was really a leak, then there should be water stains on the plywood on the floor of our attic, which should lead to water stains on the ceiling of the bedroom, which wasn't there. He also noticed that the water stains in the room was glossy, which didn't seem right. Jon rubbed the stain with the sleeve of his shirt. It came off! We have no idea what the tenant was doing in there and Jon said if it was water, it would've been embedded in the dry wall. Mystery solved! Another reason why we love Jon? We asked him about our gutters and he said he noticed that they did need replacing but didn't want to be all high pressure on us. But since we asked, he recommended that we replace the gutter and get in a few vents on the roof. Since we were there till the end of the week, Jon busted his ass to get his gutter partner to check out our place, send us the estimate, and schedule in a date. His partner did a great job on our gutters. If we ever have any more roofing needs, we're definitely calling Jon. Oh and the other guy? We're still waiting for him to send us the estimate. Scheduled an appointment to get an estimate for a roof replacement 4 weeks in advance. A day before the appointment they called to cancel it with a "something came up" reason. On top of it they refused to give addresses to check out their completed roofing jobs. Gave them 2 stars because they actually called to cancel the appointment. Jon was fast to get back to me by phone, and had part of his crew out to my home in only a couple of hours. The crew (Leo & Diaz) were great. Very polite & professional. They took the time to get up on my roof and inspect the problem area. They took pictures and consulted with me on the situation - they were honest with me that they didn't think the issue was being caused by my roof, which ultimately meant they wouldn't need to do any work (or get paid for their time so far). Our roof was also prepped for the addition of solar and Jon helped us set up and coordinate with the other contractors for solar, skylights, and masonry. They came out to fix a leaky skylight and we're very happy with the service. No more leaking. The first guy I had out from another company just told me I needed to replace the skylight for $2000+. Really appreciate that Able Roofing was able to fix it. The only thing I would mention is be prepared for a big window of time for them to come -- they couldn't give me any shorter window of time than between 8am-5pm, and then they told me they would call before coming so I could be out and about as long as I was nearby, but of course they didn't and I was out when they came. But they waited for me and didn't seem too annoyed, so that was nice. One other thing to be aware of -- the way it worked was the workers came, but then they called the manager/owner, who then called me to tell me the problem and ask if I wanted them to fix it, and then I told him yes, the workers fixed it, and they left. Not a big deal, but it's a little strange that the workers don't communicate directly with the customer and answer questions, etc. All in all we were very happy with them and would definitely use them again! read more

I guess when you do not need a job, you just do not return calls. I had a bid from the owner Jon Willis for a roof on our home.. I reached out to him four times when I was ready to go forward with the job.. I had left messages on almost all his telephone numbers and this company was not be professional enough to return a call. Could it be that these trades people are so wealthy they do not need to run their business in a professional manner? I hate to leave neg feedback, but after trying to communicate with this person for three weeks. I have had it. I have a low-slope roof, and chose the "old school" hot-mop method, as it is very durable. (I understand that Able does all types, including high-tech TPO as well.) I had no idea what's involved in a roof job on an midcentury modern Eichler-type home with skylights, but got a quick education when I saw the Able work crew descend upon it with military precision, but with a sunny attitude and great camaraderie. They found a bunch of horrors underneath my old roof, but fixed them efficiently and ably, just like the name implies. I was also impressed by the expertise of the owner, Mr. Wills, whose directness as to how to do the job right is a big plus. I'm 100% satisfied. read more

Excellent Company and Quality Service. To compare, I had five additional companies come out to bid replacing my entire 20 year old roof which has had to deal with Lucas Valley wind, and full sun exposure, thus causing many of the shingles on 50% of the roof to be worn to the fiberglass. With a roof this old, you just can't replace half of it so I started the process of calling companies from Marin and Sonoma county to bid the job. This home is over 4000 sq feet, multi level, I knew it would be an expensive job. Jon was the quickest to respond and come out and only he and one other company took the time to climb onto the roof and inspect every nook and cranny. The other companies just used satellite images. Not only was Jon's pricing by far the most reasonable and fair, but his attention to detail went far beyond my expectations, making notations on a few other things that needed to be removed such as an old, non working rusted attic fan. He was able to come out a week later to show me samples and colors and I happily signed the contract and gave him the required deposit to get into the queue. While we initially had a day scheduled and yes, other things had to happen such as finding a place to vacate with our two German Shepherds, etc, the unfortunate thing happened. Jon called to let me know he was down a guy and as a result, everyone's job had to be pushed back. Of course, many people were very upset as this create a domino effect in people's lives. One change causes other changes to occur and then you find yourself, in the busy summer months, trying to reschedule everything. Having run a business myself, it wasn't difficult to show compassion but Jon became overload with calls to the point of his voice mail becoming too full to take on new messages. I realized the importance of staying calm, finding a way to push everything on my plate back as our home needs to go to market before we lose the window of time that's critical to sell a home in the Fall leading into Winter, and just waited to work with Jon on a time frame that would work with his crew and schedule and mine which over time, became less flexible. I can truly understand people's frustration when they want a phone call returned or a concrete date established but often people get overloaded, trying to multitask and please everyone while keeping their crews working and their current projects flowing. It truly is a juggling act and while many are quick to jump the gun and write a poor one star or zero star review, it's more appropriate to give the person the benefit of the doubt, explain your situation and listen to theirs, and then try to come to terms with what may or may not work. Sometimes you can wait until the following year, even with the 'El Nino' warnings. Sometimes we put off something we should have done years prior as a roof is not only a 'non sexy' project, but it cost a bloody fortune. It's as pleasant as going for a root canal, we just don't want to have to write that big check. Jon is a good guy. He has good values, he is working very hard to please too many people, he runs a reputable company and is doing the best he can. Your calls will be returned, your e-mails will be returned but change does happen and circumstances often throw things into a bit of chaos. I spoke to other companies when my job had to get pushed back and trust me, everyone was booked well into next year and many were charging 25% to 35% more for the same job. When there is a strong need or panic, many roofing companies take advantage. Jon's prices make the wait worthwhile and everyone out there has to realize that if your scheduled date needs to be changed or you have to wait a few days for a call back, assume that there is a lot going on and it's not about you even though it is frustrating. I could have cancelled but all I would have done is shot myself in the foot and jumping to a different company wouldn't have done anything but create more frustration, a longer wait and a much higher financial outlay for the same product. During these times when we're all stressed out over many things going on in our lives, including the ups and downs with the stock market and so much uncertainty in general, take the time to slow down, catch your breath and realize that kindness and gentle communication and giving someone the benefit of the doubt goes a long way. I have only met Jon twice, he is not a friend nor a relative, just someone that I am very happy to be giving my business to as he truly does care. read more

Some of these negative reviews are bitter that Able Roofing wasn't available to do the job in "their" time frame. To leave a low rating of the company when the only fault of the business owner is being honest and realistic about the schedule is misleading to the public. I called Jon today for a minor repair and had a similar experience. He said they're booked 2-3 weeks and apologized profusely. Although disappointed, I think he handled it very professionally. Start off with, at the beginning of the process Jon was the most responsive and thorough in his presentation. His bid on my house four years ago when I wasn't ready to replace the roof was used an updated. This year, in the face of "and Nino", I felt it was time replace the roof. Jon resurrected his prior bid and updated the for bid today's situation. Altogether the bid in the work was very fair but it did have some surprises. Roofing is a petroleum-based product and petroleum prices were down substantially from the time of the prior bid. Shingles should be less expensive. Jon claimed otherwise is said it increase costs due to single prices, Workmen's Comp. etc. etc. I think part of this was snowballing but still he was the most competitive bid so I went with able roofing. Work was scheduled to begin on October 8, 2015. Jon was four weeks late at that point. Communication is not his strong suit but most trade providers and Moran are so arrogant that one is lucky to get any communication at all. Some of his excuses for not coming earlier did not make sense. It was perfect roofing weather but he claimed weather was a factor in not coming I believe he squeezed another job or two in line ahead of me over the four week delay. Once able roofing got going they performed in a professional manner. The original bid increased by about 8000 due to dry why rot they found (is if I didn't expect them to find this) and the need for gutter replacement. The four day schedule probably would've been three days except for the extra work they did a nice job cleaning up at the end of each day and at the end of the job. With very little disruption the household due to their work. Altogether, I think most contractors take Marin County residents for a ride knowing they can extract intensely greater pricing from residents they see as flush. We have a house in Texas is 70% of the roof of my Marin County home the roof in Texas was replace by 20 x 20% of the cost of the roof Marin County. There is an old saying that "in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.". In Marin County I say "in the county of contractor ripoff artists Able roofing stands out as a nice exception". read more

He had terrific communication during the roofing process where some issues were encountered once the roof was torn off, and was very fair in pricing out the incremental work to cure those defects.
