Haven't been here over 10 years. Their falafel used to be excellent. This time the place looked dingy and smelled of frying oil. Several menu items on the overhead board are no longer made (couscous, tabouli, orzo). I ordered a dozen falafel which were essentially fried globs of mostly all bread crumbs with falafel seasoning. Zero texture of any chopped beans or herbs, with flecks of hot pepper here and there. They resembled large, falafel flavored donut holes that weren't very good. If we lived in the middle of nowhere I would say it was a very poor imitation of falafel - for our local area, this is totally unacceptable. Waste of money, won't go back. read more

I have been coming here for years and it used to be my favorite, sadly it has gone downhill. I called in my order as I normally do, repeated it twice because when the guy (whom is the only person working here now) repeated it a back to me it was wrong. I repeated it again and he said OKAY. When I got there both drink fridges were practically empty. He said two sandwiches? I said no, three. He then raised his voice and said NO YOU SAID TWO. I replied no, I ordered three and repeated myself so if it is an issue I'll leave without the food. We haven't ordered in a while but I wish I had read the reviews before we did tonight. Food was slightly different than I remember it. Definitely different pitas but still good (however not worth the aggravation or the trip.) This will definitely be my last time coming here and honestly it would not surprise me if it closes in the near future. read more

The food has always been excellant here. However, I am now Gluten Free. I wanted the Tomato Vegetable soup - they have not had any for months. I wanted the Hummus + Tahinin platter without the pita (I asked for it over lettuce) ....the guy said, "NO'. I repeated the order, you can't make the platter without the pita and put lettuce instead....he said, NO! Nothing more, nothing less. He was abrupt and rude. Shame on you. I will not return here because he was rude on the phone. Gluten Free Diets are on the rise and they will lose this entire client base. Wow, reminds me of my youth going to 108th street in Forest Hills/Rego Park to get authentic falafel sandwiches. Just be careful not to drip the tahini on dark clothing! That stain is NEVER coming out. Delicious fried chick peas here in fresh pita pockets!! Great food, small business, extremely friendly and accommodating workers. Unfortunately the shopping center they are in is a little run down and most businesses have moved elsewhere, but the quality of product hasn't dropped for this place. Great option for an on the run grab. read more

This is the 2nd time I had a problem with the chef that is the only employee working in this establishment.I asked for sauce on the chicken souvlaki and watched him squeeze red sauce out of tube all over the pita. I asked what is that? he said hot sauce. I asked why wouldnt you put the tzatziki sauce every Greek place uses and he responded because you didnt ask for the white sauce.....now, he prepares a greek salad for me and as he is putting the plastic cover on i ask dont you put greek olives on a greek salad? He responds sometimes olives, sometimes no. Needless to say i got a refund bit not before me inquiring if he was drunk because i cant i.agine a sober person being incompetent and rude luke him. I used to come here a lot with my family when I was younger but I havn't been here in a few years because a closer gyro place did open up. However, I do recommend this place as well. I would get the gyro with Israeli salad. The sauces used on the gyro are delicious and it's fairly healthy. Small place, and inside is 'Rustic', but friends of ours told us it was good and after picking up a few weeks ago, I have to agree and will thank them when we see them! We ordered for a family so got a few things; one of which was a Gyro which was excellent and I was impressed as the meat was not over-salted at all. Additionally, the tzatziki sauce was unique (in an extremely positive way), and the Falafel was also very good, with a nice kick to them. The only critique I have is that the salad was lacking dressing overall, but of course next time I would ask for an extra just to be safe so not anything to keep me from heading back. This is just a warning for anyone ordering a salad to ask for an extra dressing on the side and be warned that their "Side" of Tzatziki is also very small in case you are a condiment hoarder. Will definitely be back soon and we are looking forward to checking out some more of their menu. read more

Abe's is a Wantagh Institution. Gyros are hearty. The falafels are of the green variety. I don't know what this means, but it tastes great and has plenty of great feeling mix-ins. The entire menu is consistent. Everything is fresh and crisp, although you would never know it from their marketing. There is none, other than the huge yellow overhang outside. They don't seem to skimp on the blend of textures and flavors in their food. The lettuce, tomatoes, hummus, cucs, israeli salad all taste fresh and independant in a pita. The food has integrity. This is what makes it so good. Everytime I go back I like it more and more. And in the cabinet, how can you say no to a Doc Brown's Cel-Ray? It's basically that or a pepsi. read more

I've probably been to this place over 100 times just because it's convenient quick and relatively inexpensive.. But every time I went , whether or not I called first or just dropped in for an order, I always told myself that there is one employee in particular that when he is there he makes my existence miserable, he's rude, arrogant, cocky, not funny, sarcastic and just overall a weak minded, feeble, gutless human being. He answers the phone like he's to cool for school, he takes orders in a very condescending way and after the Altercation I can't with a clear conscience go back to this establishment after the six loyal years, I've spent going. The Spanish-speaking gentleman in the back couldn't be a nicer guy, big guy that is usually there knows what I ordered before I walk in, can't speaking better about these two gentlemen, but with this one POS there he is sinking the ship, it takes a lot to aggravate me and Patience is one of my greatest attributes but to disrespecting me or somebody I'm with, I have to take a stand and the issues with people like this rat fink that I'm referring to; (as you could see many people have similar stories on Yelp) is he lives with a false sense of security in this world unfortunately, he thinks that he could talk to people in a way that is very Condescending and belittling when in reality it's hard to believe that a man who appears in his mid to late 40s has made it this far in life without broken teeth orbital bones and noses unless he has and I don't know but I feel if he did fear consequences for his verbal actions his tune with change and that's a big problem with society today there are no repercussions for completing and utter disrespect of another person. The place is dirty (borderline filthy) the workers are sometimes dirtier, the parking sucks, but the Pita's ain't half bad. I've come here more than once for take out, since they are fast and consistent. I gotta say this is a hidden gem. A little greek place that if you blink your eyes, you will miss while driving down merrick road. Don't let the look of it scare you, its not the most updated place, and it looks a lil shady like a place you might find in the hood. But, this place has great food! The gyros are absolutely awesome, get them with the works cause there yougurt sauce and that red sauce they put on them is awesome. Today I had the chick soulvaki gyro for the first time and it did not disapoint. Really tasty, the chicken was moist & delicious, sauce was amazing. I also had a side of orzo which was great. Total craphole with below average food. Place is small and dirty and staff not very accomodating. I had a gyro that was loaded with tzatziki sauce, what a total mess. Flavor-wise, it was decent, not horrible but nothing special. She had the chicken gyro platter and it was more of the same- messy, average in taste. Abe's has the best gyro hands down all of the ingredients are fresh and they special sauce is just amazing. I always get the Number 1 which comes with a chicken or beef gyro, cup of soup and a 20oz drink for $10. Just can't beat it! This place is awesome!! I have eaten at the one in Wantagh on multiple occasions and the food is always fresh. This place actually looks like a little hole in the wall, but looks can be deceiving, because although it is not the greatest looking place and easy to pass by, the food is delicious. The gyros are awesome, the best I have had in the area. You need to get them with both the yogurt sauce and the red onion sauce!!! Tonight I had the chicken souvlaki pita which was fantastic. I also had a side of orzo and a side of grape leaves, both were great!! If you are in Wantagh and are looking for some Greek food, then go no further than Abe's Pitaria. The reason why I am giving one star is because today I wanted to go in and get take out but when I realized the guy working behind the counter didn't have a mask on or gloves, I decided it wasn't safe. I had their food many, many times and it's absolutely delicious. There's a sign on the door that says masks are required in order to enter the place, so doesn't that apply to the people working there? It's a shame because their food is seriously the best gyros I have ever had but I no longer feel comfortable getting food there. SAFETY FIRST!!! This is very serious! read more

A lot of off reviews about this place, but my first time here was about 15 years ago, so they must be doing something right - how many times has the bar in the same shopping center, or the bar across the street changed names? Too many to count, and what's with that Nickel's place across the street, that's been "coming soon" for months. And enough with the reviews about the uncomfortable or odd seating - anyone who would walk into this place and say "I need to eat in" should probably reconsider many decisions they've made in their lives. The website is their menu folks; it's a simple take out place. Pretend the tables aren't there. I live around the corner, so when I'm working late and I want something relatively healthy - they're my place. The Moroccan Red is one of my favorite all-time wraps - eggplant salad, Israali salad, feta cheese and some hot sauce on a honey wheat wrap. The chicken souvlaki wrap hits the spot as well, and is a very good size. Everything that should taste fresh always does. I'm not a fan of their falafel, too green. The gyros are good enough, also a generous size, but I'm from Astoria so I'm a bit of a gyro snob. I'll eat them, but it's not something to I can rave about. I love some of their one-off, "why is this item even here?" items - pizza rolls and low fat banana bread being the two favorites. Who sells pizza rolls? And you can get many items by the pound. I went a little Abe's crazy this week and we had it three nights (after not having it for a few months) - all worked, didn't feel like a fat slob and it was less than twenty dollars a night. If I didn't have Smuckers we would have had leftovers. I don't know what some of these reviewers are expecting from the staff, it's a two man operation. I call them when I get to the Freeport station, and my food is ready by the time I get to Wantagh and drive down. They're friendly enough, but they're probably also stuck there for hours. Just don't spit in my food or curse my girl out when you hand her our food, I'm not looking for a hug. They're doing a fine job. Need a quick healthy bite, give them a shot. read more

Ugh, no thanks! Went here after it was recommended by Justin F. and I wasn't pleased. The place is absolutely a dump. Dirty, rundown looking but I still went there and even at one of the few tables there. Got the chicken gyro, with everything. The weird barbecue "special" sauce ruined the gyro's taste and overall, it tasted like any gyro I've gotten at carts in NYC. No thanks - this was not worth the trip or price. I won't come back - Greek Town in Rockville Centre still reigns supreme in my book! read more

The sides they have like the stuffed grape leaves, and couscous are pretty average though, and probably not worth your time or money. I placed an order in Abes of Wantagh a few days ago and a man walked out without a mask. I went in and the chef was not wearing a mask and breathing all over the food. When I asked him why he wasn't wearing one he said it was too busy in there. Wrong response! I cancelled my order and won't go back!
