I received treatment for Invisalign around 2022-23 and it was a horrible experience. To sum up, my teeth are not completely straight and in the best way I could describe my experience it felt like I was the first person to test it out. I would go back to get my teeth fixed properly but I honestly don't want to deal with incompetent dentists who can't take accountability or listen to their patients. Bad customer service as well so please stay with your kids/teens to protect them. To get things clear I was very responsible and wore my Invisalign like I was supposed to and even brushed my teeth 3-4 times a day so that my retainers wouldn't damage. Yet I was accused roughly EVERY VISIT that I was not wearing my retainers long enough. I was a minor around this time so it makes sense why they didn't believe me. Anyways first appointment a male dentist applied the brackets on my teeth and 2 fell out almost immediately after. He clearly said he didn't apply them well and re-did it again. I had to go in a couple days later to get the brackets put in AGAIN. I explained the situation to my main doctor because I did not eat anything hard it was only SOFT FOOD. But all she had to say is "so it's our fault... not yours". So instead of thinking "hmmmm maybe I should recommend my coworker to get more training" she instead gets defensive. I was "accidentally" sprayed with water after that as well (could've been a coincidence idk). Fast forward to the end of my treatment I was expecting to get more Invisalign retainers to wear because the last set was not completely straight. The bottom tray had two front teeth that still went inwards. So I ended up with two crooked teeth at the end of the treatment. I know if I go back they will blame it on me for "not being responsible with my retainers". I literally starved myself to wear it but ok you guys obviously know better and "can tell". I can tell they are all interns or fresh out of one honestly. Everything could use an improvement office location is fine but team needs a clean up. I would not recommend this orthodontist based on my family's experience. We felt pressured into starting treatment, and at one point were even told it was our "legal responsibility" to begin braces, which was inappropriate and made me feel as though my parenting was being questioned. The financial policies are also very rigid: there are no flexible down payment options, additional charges every six months for photos and X-rays, and the out-of-pocket costs are extremely high even with private insurance. Medi-Cal is not accepted, and the copayments left to families can be overwhelming. We were also surprised to find that the initial consultation is billed if photos and X-rays are completed. Overall, the focus seemed more on payment than on patient care. Finally we went for a second opinion at a different office an exit away. read more

Save yourself time and money and go somewhere else. They charge $1000 for a consultation (and will also bill your insurance for the consultation after you've paid out of pocket). Dishonest practices around money- way overpriced, will try to compel you to start treatment right away. Once you start, they bill your insurance multiple times for more services and money than you signed on for in your treatment contract. I ended up cancelling our treatment and learning a very expensive ($2500 out of pocket and also lost our entire insurance benefit) lesson- ALWAYS get a second opinion, and 90% of orthos will do a free consultation. After we cancelled, they charged my card for a monthly payment, which they cut a check to reimburse and then the check was returned when I deposited it (it bounced). I wish I never heard of this place, and do not trust my dentist any more for referring us there. Dr. Abar is a skilled conman and you will find more honest, affordable, and quality care elsewhere- I promise you. We went to a wonderful new ortho and are paying a third of the cost for the same treatment plan (in fact our new ortho's treatment plan is more comprehensive) and the experience has been completely night and day comparison- so excellent. So, maybe it all worked out for the better, because we landed somewhere way better after all. Karma will be there one day, and I sure hope before too many more people get screwed over. read more

Abar Orthodontics has a wonderful staff! They are very friendly, warm, professional, accommodating and thorough. It's been a year and a half and my eldest will be getting her braces off in May and her teeth are straight. My youngest will be starting her second phase of her braces to continue improvement with the alignment of her teeth, underbite and spacing. Dr Abar explains the treatment in detail and welcomes all questions and concerns. He is very understanding and flexible with payments. From my understanding, this office hires newly certified dentist while charging the full price. The first time I noticed was when one of the dentist had my mouth pride open to install my Invisalign buttons and after 15 minutes she finally removed it, and it was to the point where my mouth was numb, and wouldn't even close For a few seconds. There are however, one of two supervisors who will double check their work before you leave. Nubia and Noe, both front desk, are professional and able to help with scheduling appointments or sharing documents and such. The problem I had was with Dr. Abar. When I was first recommended to their office I was losing my dental benefits from my last job and felt rushed to make a decision when he told me that they would be able to at least take a portion from my insurance before I lose it Two months after starting Invisalign, I was told I have an additional tooth growing inside my gums and had to pay out of pocket $750 or it might damage my roots. Now that I am almost finishing my treatment, I was told that my teeth are not properly aligned and have to get another x-ray costing $850 and continue wearing them longer than expected which I'm confused why this was not caught on through previous appointments. And as if that wasn't enough money, I apparently need surgery on my gums which will be $2000. And to the confused look on my face, Dr. Abar said to me, "You don't remember? You don't know anything do you?" And then proceeds to pull up documents that I signed in 2021 that states, this particular surgery will not be a part of the total that I agreed to pay. He also has a short temper with his staff when I noticed that one of his dentist wasn't able to access a file he repeated to her, "What are you doing? The file is right there. I don't understand why you don't know how to do this." Again, considering this seems to be a place to hire new dentist. You would expect for him to have a little more patience. This is not the quality of service I expected that I am paying for. Please be cautious with where you spend YOUR money, especially in this economy. read more

We scheduled an appointment with this doctor after my son's dentist referred us. He wanted $1,000 just to get X-rays and get an estimate for treatment. He also said that we had waited too long to start treatment for my 11 year old and that we needed to start treatment right away too for my 9 year old. He didn't take any pictures or X-rays and only looked at their teeth. Something just seemed off about his demeanor and how pushy he was to start treatment. I since made appointments with 3 different orthodontists and they all have said that it's actually too soon to start treatment and we need to wait until all their teeth came in. Horrible dentist. Dr. Abar treated me for Invisalign, which cost me well over $8000. From the onset, he was impersonal and extremely pushy to get me to put my deposit. I should have listened to my gut. I did treatments with Dr. Abar, and he clarified that if I wasn't happy with my results at the end, he would continue to straighten my teeth for free. Well, my teeth were still crooked once treatment was done, and he tried to charge me $400. Apparently, treatment at the office is free, but it is $400 for additional aligners. He intentionally left this part out, and I felt so deceived. I ended up hating my results, and will need to pursue further treatment at another office. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. We were referred by our children's dentist, Dr. Zander Lin to come here. It was very busy here, it was hard to find a seat. Though all the staff were courteous. My concern is the cost, and Dr. Abar's comments. I could not believe how much it was going to cost us to get braces for our children here. Dr. Abar spoke of how my child's face was not symmetrical and he could have helped him IF I came sooner. My son asked what does that have to do with now? My son and I were giggling because we found that comment absurd. I wondered the same as my son did. Why bring up something that you can do nothing about? I said, Dr. Abar my face is not symmetrical yet I've been told I have a perfect smile by many dentists including Dr. Thibeault in Pinole and Dr. Carrington in El Cerrito as well as others. If I was insecure and if my son had an insecurity complex we both would've been badly affected by a comment like that. We respectfully listened to him but I decided to see if where I got my braces back when I was 15 were still around, UCSF Orthodontics. Yep, they still have dentists training to be orthodontists there and it's half the cost that Dr. Abar was going to charge. I had a serious underbite when I was a teen. My Mother was told to take me to UCSF. The doctors at UCSF spoke about surgery but then decided to just do a headgear, positioner and braces for two years. In one year my smile was beautiful and my underbite was gone. I get told often what a beautiful smile I have, I always praise UCSF. I should've looked to see if they were still training dentists there first before heading to Dr. Abar. But their dentist recommended him. They were wonderful at UCSF Orthodontists and never brought up anything about my son's face not being symmetrical, lol. And they are half the cost! read more

After 6 years, my daughter is getting her braces off tomorrow. Her jaw was not aligned properly, so the treatment was longer than normal. 6 years of treatment was not cheap. My daughter's teeth took longer to fix than expected due to unpredictable delays in baby teeth falling out. We ended up paying some extra money for the extended treatment. We went past the predicted time on the initial contract. This is why we had to pay extended treatment fees. Dr. Abar worked with us on costs and monthly payments. Her Braces costed me 9000 dollars at this office, and after removing them the retainer was 450.00 dollars more. After having the retainer for two months it broke and I was told that I had to pay an additional 450.00 to replace them. Dr. Abar agreed to give me a discount on the replacement retainer. I thought that was the end of my daughters treatment. Well six months later I received a bill for 350.00 dollars more. I called to ask why I was being billed and was told that was the remaining balance that wasn't paid. Dr. Abar gave me a discount and six months later said he didn't. If you have children that need braces avoid this place please. After paying about 10,000.00 dollars. I learned that I could have went somewhere else and paid 3000.00 for the same service. The staff and the "boss" there is horrible. I called on 9/16/22 and left 3 messages to schedule an appointment for my daughters. No one from the place called me back so I called once again following up on my voicemail on 9/23/22 an got in contact with the staff member "Nuvia" she was able to schedule an appointment for my twins on 9/29/22. I got 1 appointment notice and 2 forms on 9/24/22 and called (because I do not know their hours of operations and it was not listed on the form that shared give us a call with any questions or concerns) and left three messages. I followed up on my voicemails on 9/26/22 and spoke to Nuvia again and she was unhelpful I asked her the process for the return time for voicemail and she shared "every 15 minutes" I asked why was my voicemails never returned she said she checked the voicemail- and never shared she'll look into it. I asked to be directed to a supervisor or boss and she said "we do not have one on site now I can have my manager call back I declined because I need to speak to someone now regarding this manner. So she directed me to someone and I left a voicemail and on this this appointment day I still had no call back regarding my issues with Nuvia. I called back to get the second appointment confirmation and she was helpful in this manner. The day of 9/29/22 was so uncomfortable- a sign posted on the door "mask required" but no staff had one on properly, the staff was speaking Spanish in front of an African America male, I asked I had some issues about the form and didn't collect the help in filling it out so I filled it to my best ability for my 8 year old daughters. The person that was talking was letting us know to see the boss, which never called our name to know he was speaking to us. The "boss" there was un-welcoming as he sat in his chair with no greeting I started off the conversation and let him know your staff is rude (as there was four people at the front desk today) which wasn't when I seemed help, he had no issue that his staff member was rude, and kept looking at my daughter really uncomfortable I was trying to rush him into getting the consultation done but yet he was asking me questions about adults as I filled it out the best of my ability for my youth children. As he kept cutting my off I ended up doing the same because you give me respect to collect it I'm not done talking so I can careless of how high you think you are give me my respect and I'll return the favor. I had a terrible experience at Abar Orthodontics. Not only are they the most expensive orthodontic office in the area, but they also nickel and dime you with additional charges on top of the already exorbitant price of braces. To make matters worse, their inadequate treatment actually caused severe decay in my teeth, requiring me to get them replaced at a different dental office. I do not recommend this place to anyone and would suggest looking elsewhere for better value and quality of care. Dr. Abar is a fraud person he will put the braces on and charge you double to remove them even though he messed up the treatment. They are scam artists, do not go here!! I went in for TMJ problems and the doctor looked in my mouth for under a minute and then told me I had a bad overbite and a number of other issues, but that I would have to pay $500 for x-rays and and an exact diagnosis. He said that I would definitely need braces to correct these problems, and that a TMJ splint would be impossible to make and not covered by insurance. He seriously made it sound as though my teeth were severely messed up. I thought this was very strange because I've gotten a lot of dental work done in the past and was never told I needed braces or anything, so I got a second opinion from a doctor in Walnut Creek who gave me free x-rays and told me I did NOT have an overbite, had very minor bite issues in general, and wasn't even a candidate for actual braces as well as how I could have a splint constructed and get physical therapy for my TMJ. She said my TMJ issues were likely hardly caused by my teeth at all, and that it was an issue with the actual joint itself. The doctor at Abar orthodontics literally just made stuff up!! He wanted me to pay $500 for x-rays and then thousands of dollars (out of pocket) for braces I don't even need! They charged for initial consultation unlike most other orthodontists in our area, kind of mad at our dentists for recommending them to us.

They don't care about the happiness of the patient. It's all about the walking advertisement. They make way too many appointments in one day so if you make an appointment at 930am expect to be there till about noon. They claim to do all they can as far as money accommodations for low income people but they are very clearly only worried about getting paid. read more

Dr. Abar was recommended to us through our primary dentist. The staff at Abar Orthodontics is bar none. They are always kind and courteous when visiting and calling with appointment reminders. Even through the pandemic, the staff made sure to keep patients up to date with protocols and procedures leading up to appointments. The dental assistants were always gentle between my teenage daughters and myself I think I am the most sensitive and they were always cautious when doing tightenings. I had braces for five years because of how much space I had in my mouth due to missing teeth that never grew in, I can't say enough how grateful I am to Dr. Abar and his team for how much patience and understanding they had throughout the entire process. They didn't just take into account the problems I had but they also wanted to make sure the treatment I received took into account how my smile might grow and change over the course of my life.
