What a good business model. Pay a high service fee and if the $8600 scares u away well they received $199. Read reviews on Yelp. Same scam. High service fee, quick review and high quote to fix. I paid $89 for the BAM service a month ago and booked an appointment for a month out because they were really backed up. I knew ahead of time that refrigerant was low and wanted fill up before the heat came. They came out and performed a diagnostic and told me what I already know except and let me know that my capacitor was not running at 100%. He also stated that MAYBE the dry filter (the blue cylinder shaped thing by the outdoor unit) is blocked and it would cost about $4k to replace. The technician could not refill refrigerant because his scales were broken. When asked if he could come tomorrow, he messaged his dispatch and it was a no and it would be another week out. He also stated that the capacitor replacement was $428 which is just way out there for a $20 part and 10min labor. I went ahead and was able to have someone local come out the same day and had my refrigerant refilled and capacitor replaced for $450. He also said the dry filter was fine. In summary, I feel that Abacus are more for the corporate business' side than residential since prices are so unrealisticaly high. I would say they are good for diagnostics since they have more tools at their disposal than smaller companies. At most I would have them do annual diagnostics with supervision and leave service to someone else. read more

The technician went out of his way to get the new toilet we needed -- found the parts to install it -- and by the end of the day, the whole job was done. We've used Abacus for years because they're dependable, their employees are knowledgeable, and we feel confident in their work -- whether it's plumbing or electrical. Houston friends, do NOT use Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electrical. Here's my experience: A couple of months ago I called Abacus Electric and was given an appointment a few days away. I was given a four hour window. The day of my appointment I waited until my appointment window had passed. So I called for an update. Somehow, Abacus lost my appointment and did not have it scheduled. After being on hold and given the runaround, they were able to get a technician out since it was their mistake. I was impressed with this so I had them do a home inspection of my electrical system the following day. I bought a several thousand dollar upgrade to my electrical system. A couple of months later, I needed warranty work done. I called and made an appointment. I mentioned that I wanted the same technician to perform the warranty work when I made the appointment. I even called him by name during the request. They told me it would be a couple of days before he could make it out. The day of my appointment, I called their Houston number and spoke to a manager that confirmed my appointment and that my technician that I requested would be there at the appointment time. They said he would be at my residence between 12-4. At 4:30, I called and was told that my technician was in League City on another job and that I needed to reschedule for tomorrow. Keep in mind, I had to call them after the appointment time had passed. No phone call from them. Steer clear of this company. That's twice they've screwed up my appointment's. Steer clear of this company. Horrible at making and keeping appointments. I wish I had not spent the money I did with them because of their customer service and not keeping appointments. read more

I just got stood up for yet another Wi-Fi Hub & Sensor installation appointment. This feature is the main reason why I was sold on signing up for their VIP plan this year. My first no show appointment was on Tuesday, July 1st. Aside from the auto email letting me know the appointment was coming up, I received no call, no acknowledgment, and no apology when I called to reschedule for today, Monday, July 14th. Today I received 3 separate confirmation texts and calls that a technician was on the way, only for no one to ever show up each time. Each dispatcher I spoke to said you've been reassigned but "someone is on the way". Why promote a service you are unable/unwilling to provide? For what it is worth, I am not a frequent online reviewer at all but this experience has been so maddening that I truly feel compelled to do so this time around to give others a heads up on how Abacus runs their business here in Austin. read more

AWFUL COMPANY! We are Senior Citizens living off SS checks. Called Abacus for problem with garbage disposal. The problem was a $20 part. The final bill was for $362.61!!!! If this was an honorable and reputable company this is what the technician should have done: Charge for the visit to evaluate the problem ; THEN he should have said sir it is a $20 part, you can find a friend or you can do it yourself. Had a breaker go out that caused us to lose power in the living room. Called Abacus to see how much it costs to replace the breaker ...The electrician said that our two breaker panels need to be completely redone because it wasn't wired correctly by the builder, and our house will catch fire if we just replace that bad breaker that went out! He refused to only change the bad breaker out, saying he would be held liable if our house caught fire. He quoted us $20K to redo the breaker panels! And left us without power to our living room, but not without charging us $200 for a "diagnostic fee". I called another electrician immediately for a second opinion. He verified that Abacus was not telling us the truth and he fixed the problem without hesitation. After the stress that Abacus has caused me today, and no less charging me for it as a "diagnostic fee" I will be filing reports on them with various entities for fraudulent business practices. I strongly do not recommend Abacus. I contacted Abacus on Friday 10/27/2023 because my hot water was not working. A tech by the name of Thomas Howell came out and informed us that our tankless water heater needed to be repaired. He explained they did not have the parts available and informed that they could place an order for the parts and he would return to install them on Tuesday 10/31/2023 which we agreed and paid in full $694.61 for this repair. Thomas returned on Tuesday timely with the parts it took him about two hours to complete the repair. Once he was finished the hot water was working I thanked him and wished him well. Less than 6 hours later the hot water stopped working. It was after business hours so we sent an email explaining the situation which we still have not received a response. Today 11/1/2023 I called and explain that my hot water was not working. I was told they would send someone out between 8-12 to take a look. Rickey Belt arrived timely and took about two hours when he informed me that our water heater was actually damaged beyond repair and we needed a new one. He then said he would call a manager to explain the situation to see what they could do to further assist us. He came back and informed that our options were to pay them 6k for a new water heater or they would offer a partial refund for the failed repair which we didn't need from the start because again the water heater is damaged beyond repair. I explained to him we would like a full refund a partial refund is absolutely unacceptable. He said he completely understood and apologized and said we would receive a call from a manager today. I never received a call. I called them around 4:17 PM. I was told by a very nice women in customer service named Jenn that management was gone for the day. She apologized and informed she would ensure I received a call tomorrow by noon. I am still without hot water. I do not recommend this company I would have given 0 stars if I could. I understand that as humans we make mistakes both individual that came out were polite and professional. Although Thomas did not diagnose the issue properly, my frustration is not with him because again he's human. My issue is with how management is handling a mistake made by an employee at Abacus. All we are asking for is a full refund nothing more nothing less. If I cannot trust you do a job that I paid $694 for, why on earth would I give you 6k. I missed work twice to stay home for this repair yet I still do not have hot water. We have a small child and this is very frustrating. Had we been told on Friday that we needed a new water heater we would have just paid for one. I will share my experience with my neighbors, family, friends and clients. I made 4 appointments for just an estimate. 3 of the appointments were canceled and rescheduled. So I waited for them to arrive on the 4th appointment and I never heard from them. I had a kitchen faucet seized up and needed a pro to remove and replace it. The company came out on short notice and finished the work, but the faucet was leaking immediately after they left. I was charged too much for the work, and then the company would not repair the leak that was not there until their crew worked on it. Once I fixed the leak myself it was clear the plumber loosened my shutoff valve because the water line to faucet was too tight. He should have done the job right, and the technician that came back out to my house should have recognized the poor quality of work. Instead the technician tried to blame the problem on shutting the water off, and refused to fix the leak. I don't recommend this company unless you are extremely desperate for service on short notice. read more

Totally took advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic. I wonder if each of their plumbers set the rate based on what he thinks you can pay. I had a 15' repair of a pipe (pinhole leak). They charged over $700. Then said I had a bad valve in water heater (4 years old) and charged over $400 to replace that. Learned later it was a $20 part and 5 minute job. Garbage disposal quote over $400- All other quotes were around $100. Got them to come down on that a little. Plumber later admitted he works on commission and business was down 85% due to pandemic. I had other plumbing needs but decided to cut my losses. Fancy trucks, tv advertising = super high prices. I think I will report them to Attorney General. I went to Home Depot in Humble TX. on Monday 8/21/2023. I was the to look for a Mini Split Air Conditioner. A young lady was right there at the front door as I walked in and asked me if I was there for A/C services. I said yes and she took my info and put it in her phone, and said that someone would get in touch with me within the next 4 hrs. well the 4 hours went by and nothing. So I called the number in the text/email that I received. It went to Abacus. I was told that a manager would be calling me. That didn't happen. on Monday. Called Abacus on Tuesday to see what was going on. Was told the manager was going to call me sometime Tuesday. Called Tuesday night at 6:45 to see if the manager was still going to call and found out he when home at 5 pm. Then received an Email that I had an in person appointment on Wednesday between 9 & 6 pm. So I called Abacus this AM and let them know that I work until 5 pm, the person I talked to said she would let him know. Well 6 pm came and went and the manager was a no show. I called at 5:45 and was told I was still on the schedule for today. I called back again at 6:30 and asked for dispatch and no one answered. I had called Abacus to have a routine HVAC checkup and there was a minor leak in my attack. The tech did his review and stated I need a new system. I asked what the cost was and he told me "$31,500". I'm 62 and had never paid more than $10,000 for a new system. He gave me a lot of reasons that didn't make sense and I told him to email the quote and leave. I then called Abacus to complain and got a manager. He stood by his tech. He said if you want the best service it's going to cost. I then called to speak to the owner as a friend of mine is his friend. I called and and a woman who was very nice and took all my info and stated the owner would get back to me but never did These people will rob you blind if you let them. The manager I spoke with took no accountability for the companies mistakes. We live in a 4 story home with AC on roof. Our tech and the installation manager blamed each other for why a crane was not scheduled. We have to paid for years as a member of their plumbing annual maintenance. I called to cancel that as well. This is one of those times I wish I had looked at the yelp reviews before calling Abacus. I would avoid them at all costs as they are scam / ripoff artists. Be aware they were promoted in the "Consumer Business Review" that is mailed each quarter or so to my house. Now that I know the "Consumer Business Review" magazine promotes scam artists, I will avoid any vendor listed in that publication. I called Abacus for two things to be repaired, spent a lot of time on the phone explaining the problem - dripping bathtub needed a new cartridge and a sink that needed an adjustment - gave them the brand name, etc. We scheduled an appointment on a Wednesday and the only time window they would give me was between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Wednesday morning around 9:30, a lady from Abacus called and said the technician was on his way - it somehow took hours to get here as he didn't arrive until 3:00 p.m. He was very courteous, looked at the issue and took a lot of pictures with his tablet. He told me he would be unable to do the work today and it would take at least two more trips - one person to come fix the bathtub leak and another for the sink. That was very disappointing as I had already taken off the day for work to meet him as well as specifically explained the issues needing repair when I setup the appointment (brand name, etc.). He needed a few moments to work up an estimate - if I joined their "plumbing club" I could save $376 on the repair (that's about how much I thought the job was worth). When I asked how much the estimate was, I was told I could have it repaired for the low price of $1,674 if I joined their plumbing club. Needless to say, I asked him to leave. I called another plumber and had both issues fixed for $322. Like I said, I wish I had looked on Yelp prior to calling them and wasting a day as this seems to be their standard operating procedure. read more

I can only provide review on customer service as no scope of work was accomplished. Like everyone we are upgrading to a smart thermostat and our old unit has no C wire to the thermostat, requested service for install from front office. They state technician will come "sometime" the next day to evaluate and provide quote for service and perform work same day if approved. Though it's annoying to get a ridiculous window of 9a-6p arrival time, I say that's fine because i was flexible today. I get a call from technician who is 45 min out. He thinks I want to buy a new thermostat? I said no sir we need a C wire. He quotes the most ungodly amount $1,492 (!!!!) to install a C wire over the phone. I told him that can't be right why don't you just come and see what we're asking for. Technician proceeds to say he will come but we must now agree to a $99 consultation fee. What a waste of time and rip off!!! I told him we would be do business elsewhere. In summary, the front office failed to provide information to technician, and likely failed to disclose to me this obligatory consultation fee. The technician and/or the company is trying to rip off customers. And they don't care if they waste your time. Imagine taking a full day off of work to meet their "window" only to get quoted an unreasonable price. And fwiw, I was able to successfully get quotes in the $300s for the work from two other local HVAC companies. read more

We recently bought an electric vehicle so I called Abacus Electrical to give us a price on putting at 220v plug in our garage. 1st of all, they charged me $99 just for the right to come out and try to earn my business. I should have known better then. Then, the technician quoted me just under 10k. This is simply for installing a 220 plug in a garage. When I told him I had been looking online and saw prices ranging from 1k-3k, he told me the internet was outdated and those were prices from a few years ago. I told him, there was NO WAY I was going to pay that much for a plug and he continued to argue with me telling me google was giving me "outdated information." I called another company in the area and am getting the same job done (by a master electrician) for $2500. I will definitely not be calling Abacus for ANYTHING in the future. read more

I had seen their vans in my area and decided to give them a call since they are a company name I recognized. Had them come out to do an AC pre-Summer maintenance check and was shown that my system plenum and ducts/vents had significant mold growth (thanks humid Houston). They provided photo evidence and some was visible in the vent, so I knew it needed to be fixed. Their quote was pretty steep in my opinion, but I don't really know what things cost and didn't want to call someone else out for a second quote. I was told it would be an all-day job and on the day of scheduled service, it was noon and I still hadn't heard when the crew would come out. I called dispatch and they said their truck had a dead battery - fine, but would have been nice to know because now they would be working in my house well past working hours and into dinner time. The crew did finally arrive and it took about 6hrs to complete the work, which I think they did a good job on. However, lots of debris cleanup was needed on my part, so add on another 1hr plus of cleanup on my end. Overall, the job got done to my satisfaction, but I do think I overpaid for it...that is on me, but not a company I will rush to call back for service again. read more

Okay, so the work that they did was fine, but it was a bit expensive for what it was (straightforward shower cartridge replacement). There also seemed to be a communication breakdown between the two plumbers: one came Wednesday and identified the part that they needed, a different one on Friday arrived without the part and had to come back later with it. The thing that was a little bit annoying was that the second plumber was insistent after finishing the job that I had a persistent drip from the faucet. It seemed to be a steady stream drip when it was shown to me... the fix for this new problem was quoted at $2,600! I held off on committing to any new repairs, only to find the drip completely gone after the first use. Just know they are going to try to upsell you. Research the repair you'll need to have done beforehand and be a smart consumer. read more

I'm shocked that they provided near 0 value in the initial assessment, only to come back with 4 options (3 cost over 15K and 1 was 6k). Their manager refused to come out to complete the least expensive option because he felt the entire unit needed to be replaced. Not the case...thank heavens we called Courtesy Air and received substantially less hassle, better service, and a more professional experience all-around. Worst company I've ever hired. I got their value plan with all around service and maintenance. Every time they visit, they leave issues behind. They break equipment and tell you that you'll have to pay them for the repair. They over charge. You get very little benefit from their value plan or whatever the official title is. Example 1 - plumbing Saw the problem, said they couldn't fix it, I suggested a solution and suddenly they figured out the solution. I received a heavy charge for them removing a plug from my garbage disposal. Example 2 - water heater I asked them to do annual maintenance. The tech breaks it somehow and tells me that it's broke and the water would no longer heat. I argued with him over the phone and suddenly it started working again. I called another tech to confirm if there was any issue. The tech from another company told me that it wasn't an urgent issue and could wait a long time before being fixed. The alternative company also replaced the system months later for a fraction of the cost. Example 3 - AC System fan was having issues. Abacus told me that with my discount, I would pay 199 for them to diagnose (excluding trip charge). This does not include any repairs.
