AB Marathon is the best auto repair shop in the North Side. The $29 oil change special is amazing--it comes with a tire rotation. Service and knowledge is unbeatable, and I take my Honda Fit and Volvo 850 Turbo here for preventative maintenance. I've had to come here twice now. Most places try to up sell you if you're a girl or treat you like you're an idiot with out knowing that your dad is a mechanic. Searched Yelp for Transmission repair and this place came up with the most reviews and highest rating. And I must say, it's well deserved! I had an issue where, for a week, my car wouldn't move when put into reverse. So I drive to AB Marathon to get it looked at and of course, as soon as i get there it starts working. I bring the car in anyway and explain the situation. They recommend I get it checked out even if the problem isn't happening anymore. So they check it out for me, free of charge. The mechanic called me a couple hours later and told me they were trying to reenact the original problem. So he explained step by step, the different test he ran but they couldn't find anything wrong with it and apologized to me. (Even though "couldn't find anything wrong" is exactly what I wanted to hear haha). They did, however, tell me that if it acts up again I could bring it in immediately and they'll stop what they're doing to take a look at it. I felt so great about this experience that I asked them to take a look at the electrical wiring in the car because I was having issues with the windows and locks. After two hours of work, they called me to pick up the car and the problem fixed. The mechanics and lot managers were very thorough in explaining what work had to be done, their step-by-step procedures and the pricing breakdown. I left there feeling like I got the very best service for my money and didn't, at all, feel like I was dealing with shady mechanics. read more

Phil took the time to explain what might be wrong and how if it was something serious what signs I would notice. I felt very comfortable leaving my car in their hands. Phil gave me a time frame of when my car would be looked at, when I would be contacted and was true to his word. This place is great. I've taken my car there twice. The first time was with a mysterious cooling problem. I talked to the mechanic, described the symptoms, and left it there for a couple hours. I got a call later in the afternoon with him telling me he tried everything he could think of to recreate the overheating but couldn't, and that he could replaces a few different things, but he wasn't comfortable doing that unless he knew exactly what was wrong. He was very quick, and more importantly, very honest. The shop must have some magical properties, because after that visit, my car hasn't overheated once. Then today I took it in with grinding brakes. Dropped it off around 8:30, got a call with an estimate by 9:30, and it was done at 11:30. He explained everything they were going to do, explained exactly what parts he'd be replacing, and gave me a heads up on some things I should think about replacing later down the road. The final bill was identical to the estimate, and everyone there was very kind. I know a bit about cars and there are all sorts of things they could have claimed needed to be replaced, but they didn't. These folks are honest, and the real deal. I love these guys. I've found my new mechanic. Cheap gas, too! read more

One of the employees at this service station stole an item out of my vehicle today. I have had my import SUV into this shop many times for service and built a great relationship with them but today that all changed. I presented my vehicle to them for a problem and in the matter of 30 minutes someone had removed an electronic device that I can guarantee was in the vehicle when I stepped out of it. One of the worst parts about it was that I was less than 20 feet away when they did it! I challenged them on this theft face to face before I even left the property and gave every opportunity for them to confess to the theft but no one did. I work for the City of Chicago and everyday I provide services to the public. When I need a service I expect honest people and AB Marathon has proven to be the opposite of that! I would rather have difficulty with the service than a thief dealing with my personal property. Again I want to warn others of this incident, DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS!! I have been working in public service with the city and the military for over 12 years and I can not tolerate dishonesty and thieves, this place has them both. read more

Yelp led me to this place, and I must agree with the other positive reviews. First of all, I called to see if they were open and how free they were. Since it's Saturday, I didn't want to be waiting around a long time. Their costumer service on the phone and in person was great (both Paul and Aladdin are very helpful). I only write reviews when I love a place. I appreciated going to a place where I don't have my guard up for getting ripped or or fending off people who want to unnecessarily sell me stuff. However, the best part was paying just $28 for the oil change, tire rotation, 22pt inspection, and they filled up my tank on top of all that. I treat my car with care and regularly change my oil, maintenance etc. so it is nice to go to a place where they say that you car looks great and their is nothing wrong! (especially having other places tell me I need repairs that I absolutely don't need... perhaps it's being 20 something white girl that makes people think I'm clueless...mistake...I should write more bad reviews of those places).... I think they mentioned my air filter was dirty, but didn't even put pressure on me to have them change it. I am happy to save a couple buck and replace something simple like that myself. I also had a headlight out, which I was just planning on replacing myself, but I've been telling myself that for months (one headlight in Chicago apparently doesn't get you pulled over; they've got bigger fish to fry). So it was definitely worth my time to just to ask them to replace it, so that was $20, which is fair since I was planning on buying one for $16-20 (I actually mentioned to Paul I might have both headlights out since it seem darker than normal driving last night, but it was a good sign when he just said I only had one out). I wasn't waiting long. My car is more recently over 100,000 miles, so Aladdin went through what I should check up on at 105,000 miles, but without the feeling that he was trying to sell me on anything. He mostly said to be careful about the timing belt in the next few 1,000 miles, so I'll do my research, as always to look into that. Overall good experience! read more

This is by far the best mechanic shop I have ever been to. I moved to Chicago about two years ago and a few months later I needed an oil change. As someone who does not know a lot about cars, I was terrified at the prospect of finding a mechanic that wouldn't try to take advantage of my ignorance when it comes to auto repair/maintenance. These gentleman are wonderful and I have been bringing my car to them for a year and a half now. For years I've found it extremely difficult to find good and honest mechanics, until I walked into this AB Marathon that is. You really cant say enough about the service and quick response in getting the job done with these guys. I went in for front brakes (including rotors) and 4 brand new tires for my Acura TL and the job was complete in no time!! EXCELLENT SERVICE. I have been going here for years. I fill my tank up weekly. I have had 2 tire replacements completed here. My horn replaced here. All services over the years have been completed within 24 hours of dropping off my car. I TRUST these people. Yesterday I pulled in as the fuse was blown on my VW Jetta electrical adaptor. Phil helped me. He didn't have the fuse. Said he would order and have for me the next day. Didn't need my name or number. Just gave me a smile and said to "come back tomorrow". He kept his word. Came back today and sure enough Phil was there. With my fuse. He installed it in a matter of seconds. I asked him how much and he said, "no charge". I respect businesses time and expertise and certainly don't expect anything for free. Couldn't believe it. He said the part was so cheap and it was so easy to install, not to worry about anything. THANK YOU PHIL for making my experience so easy. I felt valued, taken care of, respected and as though a friend was helping me. You continue to maintain my trust. This is one of those rare scenarios in which the internet reviews of a place really match the service that is provided. Paul always made me feel like I was one of his favorite customers, and he went the extra mile each time to explain to me the details of any auto-situation in a way that I could understand. The other guys in the shop were very friendly as well, and on my last visit, one of them even found the problem (and an easy fix) to my issue almost immediately! They had a spare part on hand and didn't even charge me for it which was incredibly impressive to me. My uncle and I have both invested some dough here, but it has never felt gratuitous, and Paul has always been willing to show me more than one option based on my budget, if another option is available.
