Jason came out within a day of our contacting him, gave us a very complete overview of what was needed, caught that we would need a new zone board which the other two companies hadn't caught, and he included that in his bid. He gave us three different bids, allowing us to choose to just do a heat pump, to do a dual fuel with our gas furnace that still works well and to do a new gas furnace with heat pump. My central furnace wasn't working so I called Aarvaks since they installed it with the previous owner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They responded quickly and the technician was a pleasant person.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But he did not seem every knowledgeable and after an hour (despite the error code being clear) could offer nothing beyond that he needed to talk to his supervisor. Several days passed and it was cold so I called my former general contract and he fixed it in jiffy. Finally I got a call from Aarvaks that they wanted to come out again to figure it out and possibly suggest replacing the whole furnace. Well, by this point the furnace was fixed but I had to pay Aarvaks their visit fee. This bothered me, but they ended up refunding my fee. So maybe this just a one off experience. read more

Aarvaks was great. We had to do a major update to the heating on our 100 year-old, three-story house. The plan they developed was to replace the gas furnaces that were heating the bottom two floors with a single gas furnace, and installing a heat pump for the top floor (the ducts to the top floor had been blocked off because of seismic work). The Aarvaks team came in the first week in December 2025, during the cold weather in the East Bay, and completed the work in the week we had scheduled. They have a high-quality team, including someone who specializes in the ancillary work of repairing the walls they needed to cut through. We moved back in on Saturday, and have had a fully and comfortably heated house for the first time in 25 years. Furnace wasn't working, price for Aarvak coming out to diagnose was $169. A bit high, Bear charges $75 but Aarvak could come in 2 days and was faster responding to my voicemail so not a dealbreaker. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Aarvaks technician came early for appointment which was ok since they called first.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Correctly diagnosed broken inducer. Took off broken part and showed me the wheel inside wasn't spinning anymore. Put part back in before leaving. I appreciated the clear explanation and demonstration, so still all good. Emailed estimate a few days later, $1,200 to install a new inducer. Seemed a bit high since I had noticed the job took about 15 minutes. Found the part at Reliable Appliance Parts in Berkeley, available for pickup next day for $400. Picked it up myself, took about 30 minutes to install since I'm not an expert. My total cost $400 (the part) + $169 (Aarvak) = $569, Aarvak was $1200. Saved $600+. Would have been ok paying Aarvak but I think $1200 for diagnosis, part and 15 minute repair seemed way too high, even considering they're making 2 trips, having to pick up the part, and their overhead . I believe it was a bit greedy on their part, wouldn't a $400 markup been sufficient, for a total of $800 instead of $1200? read more

I asked Aarvaks to service my furnace. They replaced the filter. Afterward, my furnace kept turning off and on. I called them and they returned to say I needed a new sensor and said they would order it for me. Then they called to say my furnace was so old the sensor was no longer available and I should get a new furnace which they would install: $13,000. I called another company and the owner came out. He noticed the filter was improperly installed and then that it was the wrong one and was causing my furnace to overheat and shut off. He installed the correct filter and my furnace has performed perfectly since. He also confirmed there was nothing wrong with the sensor. read more

The technician who did the heater repair did a great job diagnosing and repairing my furnace. The problem is with management and the pricing markups. The technician at the beginning of the appointment quoted me $180 for a furnace module. But then when it came time for the bill, his boss marked up the part to over $1,000. The technician was embarrassed and tried to call the boss while in my garage. I also tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't pick up. It was very awkward and unprofessional. I don't mind paying a parts markup. Even paying double the going rate on Amazon would be acceptable to me. But this markup was ridiculous. I was planning to hire them to replace my furnace later this year, but now will look elsewhere. read more

They were responsive and quick despite the high demand for HVAC services in the winter pushing back most appointments to at least one month for other local companies. The technician arrived well within their estimated arrival window and looked extensively at both the furnace and the thermostat, determining that the wiring of our thermostat was at fault. I used Aarvaks to install a whole house air conditioner and a high efficiency furnace. The initial installs seemed OK, but later on the furnace began dripping water inside the unit causing extensive rust. Had to have a repair person come out and tighten up a gasket to fix. The A/C condenser stopped working and Aarvaks charged me $218 to diagnose and replace a blown fuse. Two days later a 2nd sister fuse blew. I decided to replace that one myself. I plan on using Atlas from now on. read more

When we moved into our house, there was a faint buzzing from our gas heater, and I someone check it out. He said we'd need to get a new heater, and at the tune of ~10k while we had a million other projects, we deferred. Also the heat worked so it didn't seem too urgent. My pilot light went out on my stove last night, called PG&E and was informed the gas was fine. This morning my thermostat had an error message and our water heater was not working. I looked up recommended services for our thermostat and saw Aarvaks. I spoke with Glen about the issue, explaining as best as I could (which was probably very confusing) he stated he would be getting back to me so I would be seen same day to get the issue taken care of. He called back with an appointment window. Jeff arrived around 13:10-13:15 for my 13:00-15:00 window. I explained the situation and Jeff knew immediately that something was awry with the earthquake valve. He reset the earthquake valve and showed me how to fix it if the problem arose again, helped relight the water heater, checked our furnace and showed me how to use the thermostat more effectively. Great experience with this Berkeley-based, family-owned company. Our furnace died the weekend after Thanksgiving. I left an old-school voicemail that Saturday, thinking I might not even hear back, and got a call from one of the owners that Monday morning at 9am. He spent almost an hour on the phone with me, patient the whole time, having me flip switches on and off, looking at the photos I was emailing him, etc. -- basically spending lots of his time trying save me money by not having to make a housecall. We were unsuccessful, so I was scheduled for a service call. It was three weeks' wait, a minor bummer due no doubt to the time of year, etc. The tech who showed up this morning (ahead of schedule!) was just awesome: smart, competent, easygoing, happy to take my questions, wore a mask in the house, didn't try to sell me an entire new furnace when the problem was only with one part, etc. He had the problem sorted in a few minutes, and fixed in an hour or so. I'm not accustomed to give poor reviews but this one is definitely warranted given my recent experience with Aarvaks HVAC. I called to set up an appointment for service to my HVAC unit, all went well with scheduling the date/time, and the actual diagnostic appointment itself...until I get an invoice for the necessary repairs with a total cost only. I followed up with owner Jeff Geier and requested a line item invoice so that I could provide a copy to my landlord, as well as the size for the recommended replacement of the air filter on 8/16, and I have not received a response from him to date. I honestly thought that everything was handled so professionally up to that point (the invoice), that the radio silence completely shocked me. If I could give it NO stars I WOULD! Here is the letter I wrote to the owner/service person- basically they are crooks, dishonest and NO ONE should ever use them!!!!!!!!! To: Jeff Geier Aarvaks Heating I am writing you because of the inspection you preformed at my residence. You arrived on Monday 1/17/2011 for a service call. I stated to you that the heater is only blowing cold air. You stated you had to "see what's going on" and began working. Upon further inspection YOU stipulated that the furnace was "no good", "too large for the home", "wont fire up at all"- (though it was firing up prior to your arrival), "and that basically it's no good and you need a new furnace". I repeatedly asked you "are you sure it is NOT just something simple like an igniter switch?!" You insisted that NO, it is not; YOU cannot even get power to the furnace, which again was not the case prior to your arrival. We had power, just no hot air. Having been a Realtor for 6 years and also going through some remodels in my day, I felt that the information you were giving me seemed a little peculiar. I felt the way in which you were speaking to me seemed condescending and at times untrustworthy. So I decided to get a second opinion. I called Harry Clark, an extremely reliable and reputable company. They arrived on Wednesday. The first issue they came up with was that YOU had taken ALL the wires off the control panel, disconnected everything and basically left it in that capacity. THERE was NO reason for you to do this OTHER than trying to support your own diagnosis that there is no power. YES no power since YOU disconnected the wires. The second finding, ONCE ALL THE WIRES HAD TO RECONNECT WHICH TOOK OVER AN HOUR TO DO, was that the furnace WAS firing up, up until the point that the furnace needed to ignite, and then would not, causing the furnace to shut down. Harry Clark diagnosed this as a "broken igniter switch", ran ALL safety diagnostics and ordered the part. Harry Clark arrived yesterday, changed the igniter switch and the furnace is now WORKING again. They also went through every duct, every wire, and every switch to ensure everything was safe, running properly and it was. They even explained things we could do to help the life of our only 10 year old high end, Trane furnace. YOU on the other hand I guess saw a mom, living in the hills, who was upset she had no heat and decided to take me for a 12,000 dollar ride to get a new furnace rather than actually taking time to help the simple problem of the igniter switch. YOU decided to try to use words you felt may scare me into giving up and buying a new furnace like "safety, fire, problem etc," rather than being an honest person and stating that maybe you weren't familiar with this type of furnace. YOU also left everything in utter chaos to only further support your bogus diagnosis which caused me more money in labor from another company. Shame on you for treating customers this way; I will make sure I share my experience with other colleagues and friends to ensure that you never set foot in a home of a person I know or work with. JEFF- I see your comment However its even more sad that I was referred to you by a colleague- You did not preform like an honest respectable way. We can go back and forth ALL day. I NEVER agreed with you for the record, my statements were one worded, "okay", as you went down all of the items you thought were wrong and justified me needing a new furnace. The most interesting to me is that Harry Clark found NOTHING you speak of- "no leaks, no safety issues" nothing- but they did find the 68 dollar igniter. That's a big difference from 12,000 dollars don't you think? I understand you have been in business that long- and frankly that's what scares me. read more

I am very happy with a new forced air heating system sold and installed by Aarvaks. The price, as I know from friends who have done comparable jobs, is very fair. The system is powerful and quiet; it raises temperatures in our house roughly one degree per five minutes. The Nest thermostat is great. The installers - Aarvak's only installation crew - are good-natured, meticulous, and proud of their craftsmanship. For example, they put a sheet metal box under our old floor furnace grate to turn it into an air intake. They painted the insides of the box black so it won't gleam up at us whenever we look down. The management didn't bother getting a building permit till the job was done. But once they did the system passed the required inspections with flying colors. The examiner who did the pressure test said it exceeded requirements by a wide margin. We are the third in a row of three houses to have systems installed by Aarvaks.
