Top Level: Initial screw-up, great recovery. Atlas heating installed our furnace nearly 20 years ago and it has worked well until recently. We started having problems with it, so we had a technician come out to perform preventative maintenance. However, less than a week later, it died completely and I could not revive it. I called Atlas, thinking that I would be a priority for service, assuming they would stand behind their work. Instead I was told that I could not get scheduled for service until 5 days later, and the money I had spent on the maintenance was essentially forfeit, as I would receive no credit towards the repairs. Instead, I went with a different company that diagnosed and repaired the problem two days later. After the rather disappointing interaction with Atlas, the owner called and was mortified at how I was treated. She was extremely apologetic and offered to not only refund the cost of the preventative maintenance, but tried to give me even more money for the poor handling of my case. While I did accept the refund, I did not think it fair to take more money. We parted on good terms and when it comes time to replace my furnace (in the near future), Atlas will definitely be part of the process. I would leave five stars, but have to deduct one for the initial poor handling of my case. read more

We bought in a mid-century house whose furnace is located on the roof . It is a common location for this type of house, but -needless to say- it is not easy to replace that furnace when the need comes. We decided to hire ATLAS for the job: the furnace was old, and the original roof ducting did a lousy job distributing the heat throughout the house. I was always cold even when the heat was "blasting". ATLAS did a thorough and patient analysis of our old system. They decided to double up the ducts to provide more air flow, and they also organized the flow inside the ducts: it worked. Frankly, the final cost was reasonable, considering the benefits I am getting from it. I particularly recommend Nick and Scott who supervised the project: they really looked into the project, then fixed the problem. Plus: the work was clean, and the communication great all along. Aaron Bright of Atlas Heating was friendly, considerate, and professional. He called when we had been told he would call, to let us know when he would be at our house, and arrived on time. We were told the costs clearly, in advance, and the costs were very reasonable. We have an aging gas furnace (that we plan to replace with electric, but want to get a little more time out of), and it decided to work correctly while Aaron was looking at it, which made it a bit tricky for him to diagnose the issue. He told us the two things that were mostly likely causing the problem. We decided to ask him to replace the part that was mostly likely to be the failing part; but it was completely our decision, with no pressure from Aaron. He had the part in his truck, and replaced it quickly, along with the filter (which we had also asked him to replace). This was our first time calling Atlas Heating. Thanks to Aaron's excellent work, we will definitely be calling again, for future maintenance if we keep the furnace for that long, or for his help when we switch to a heat pump. read more

I was impressed with how patient and knowledgeable he was; this comes with years of experience. In the end I decided to hold off on this project because my furnace still has life. She scheduled an appointment and sent me the original furnace installation plans (from 2005) so I could better pinpoint the area where the problem seemed to be. What a great company! We had them install our Trane furnace over a decade ago. Our thermostat was acting up, and the Hubby installed a Honeywell. Boom, our furnace died on New Year's Day. It is great that we do not live in the Midwest, where it is in the 10's Fahrenheit temperature. We went to get a new Honeywell thermostat, thinking that would fix it. Um, no. So, we called Atlas, who installed the furnace. They came out on weekend rates. Because New Year's is on a Wednesday. LOL! Well, it turns out that we blew a fuse in the thermostat, while installing the Honeywell. User-error. Mr. Service Person had a fuse. It was fixed in 10 minutes. We have heat. Got a furnace check with the service call, and the Trane furnace is in good condition. We still are grateful to Atlas and how responsive they are. I called to make an appointment for regular maintenance (winterizing) of my 1995 Carrier furnace. I was a little nervous because I've been in this house 13 years and I'd never gotten around to cleaning filters, etc. Ricardo showed up and was very kind about the fact that I and the previous owner were neglectful idiots - no scolding, just checking and fixing things. I am now signed up for next year's maintenance, at a discount, and the date is already on my calendar. He also gave us the senior citizen discount. Call them. The technician was practically psychic: knew which parts broke and how often. He then informed me that the furnace had been rated for ductwork my house did not have AND that the unit was discontinued before the builder ever installed it. They replaced it with a new unit, which cost less than my last 2 year's repairs with another company (who shall remain nameless...). Atlas Heating and Air of Oakland (est. 1908) installed a new heat-pump based HVAC system in our 2-story Craftsman home (est. 1912) and in our old (1969) backyard ADU in Rockridge, Oakland, during November 2025. I could not have been more impressed with the service, intelligence, hard work, ingenuity, and artistry they displayed through the entire process. At every turn, I was witness to really good, smart, industrious, engaging people, beginning with Nick, with sales and initial planning; then Scott, with functional planning and project management; onto Ryan and Carlos, co-lead installers and trouble-shooters; then Roman, doing apprentice-level muscle work; and even Alex, who served as a here-and-there assistant and deliverer. Right away, Nick, with sales, struck me as very intelligent and articulate, giving me immediate comfort and confidence. Then Scott actually upped that game with his creative and technical astuteness, driven by a deep artistic sense and awareness of our antique home's character that was not to be spoiled with a new modern system. He and I really hit it off when we realized how many side interests we shared (in the arts and music). Then Ryan, the co-lead installer, brought a technical nerd's mindset that he managed to channel through brilliant observations and solutions to problems. (And, it turned out, we had grown up three blocks from each other -- albeit, 27 years apart -- in our charming old neighborhood in Martinez!) Carlos was solid; with him I felt a quiet, focused intelligence: figure it out and get it done. Roman (ro-MAHN) was limited with his rudimentary English skills, but his can-do, hard-working, intelligence also showed by the installation challenges he conquered. And even young Alex, whom I only encountered a couple of times, delivering or assisting, presented me with an earnestness that made me feel proud for his mother. The entire installation, from basement to the third story attic, in crawl spaces and on ladders, and out in the backyard with the ADU, was done in an amazingly short 5 days (!), during a cold rainy week. I was home the whole time, engaging with them, answering questions about preferences of locations for satellite units and routes to be traversed to achieve it; and I was just glowing with gratitude for all that they were doing, and doing well. On the day that the big (huge!) main exterior heat-pump unit was put into place and connected to all the copper vacuum tubing, the rain was lashing cold, all day. I felt so sorry for what they had to endure, and yet during their lunch break on my front porch, I heard collegial laughter and uncomplaining tone in their conversations. In the last day, they brought in a trusted carpentry contractor, "Ryan #2," who did plaster work and painting. (Turns out he and Scott were already good friends, so the three of us got to compare notes on the musical interests we share.) And he did masterful work. Indeed, I have since employed him for additional side jobs for our old home. Oh, and the heat-pump system is a dream! In replacing our basement gas furnace, and adding an air conditioning component to our lives (for the first time!), while also making efficient use of the extra electricity our rooftop solar system produces, we have now gotten ourselves a fantastic HVAC system that is integrated very inconspicuously with our beautiful old house. And ... after the first month, our PG&E bill was significantly lower, with our gas usage now down to a minimum. Were I an "all thumbs" guy, I would give them 10 thumbs up! Atlas Heating is the gold standard in this area for HVAC work. I have used them for many years, and they are better than ever. I needed to change out the 35 year old gas furnace for a hybrid gas/electric heat pump system. This provides both central A/C and winter heating. You have the option to use either gas or electricity for heat depending on which option is more cost effective. In this area of Orinda we regularly see temperatures below freezing. The estimator is extremely knowledgeable and suggested critical options. The install team is the best out there, conferring constantly about my preferences. They completed a top notch installation that is far above what I have seen from the competition. The ducting, wiring, electrical and mechanical work is excellent. When the county building inspector came through he praised the professionalism. But it's the customer service that is amazing. They are eager to answer questions and do whatever is possible to satisfy the customer. They happily came out and removed the original Nest thermostat and installed a Honeywell that is better suited to our needs. This parts and labor complete coverage is for two years. My neighbor used a cheaper competitor and it was not so wonderful. read more

Then they quoted me for $12,000! I was rightfully appalled. So, I reached out to Atlas to get their opinion. They came by and fixed everything for $300. The thermostat in my house was acting up. I couldn't figure it out myself. A person came out fairly soon after I called. He made the thermostat be programable for scheduling again. I was so happy because when I called the customer service number on the actually thermostat of the manufacture they could not help me get it to schedule. The team at Atlas was able to fix it when another provider could not. I can't recall the service technician but he was GREAT. Everything from quote to install was excellent service. And, I have to say I love AC. Growing up here in Oakland we relied on the fog but now heat waves are more frequent. Atlas was fantastic. They were able to come out 2 days after we called despite it being near Christmas (18-20th). They were able to diagnose the problem and get the needed part here within a couple hours. They didn't suggest replacing the 20-year old furnace like another company had, and laughed when I mentioned that another company had recommended it. They were able to diagnose that the furnace's board had failed. The previous company had done so as well, but they had also thought our blower was malfunctioning, because it was always on. Atlas' tech was able to start the furnace by manually completing the normal startup sequence (bypassing the control board), so they were able to rule out the blower being at fault. The blower's malfunction was just that it was getting the wrong signals from the damaged control board. One thing I really value, especially with how it's becoming more and more rare: they were completely transparent in their pricing/fees. They didn't bundle everything together without prices, and then give us a mystery sum. They quoted their visit fee, the rate for their labor, and the cost for the replacement part. The control board wasn't cheap, but the cost of the new board and the single hour of labor they charged for diagnosing the issue & installing it was $800 less than the first company had asked for for their cheapest option. They were polite and friendly, knowledgeable and happy to answer a slew of questions from a first-time homeowner. All around fantastic, I highly recommend Atlas Heating. read more

Atlas installed my heat pump HVAC system in 2022 and I am so happy with it. I never expected the system to pay for itself, but it is so much more efficient than my gas furnace that it is going to come much closer than I thought it would. Atlas has been responsible for the heating in my 1899 Victorian house since the early part of the 20th Century and I am so glad that they remain an expert and responsive business now. He told us different options but he was clear that hiring someone to assess what walls were insulated and getting insulation was the first step. I can't recommend them enough as my initial consultation and install experience was exceptional. My wife and I needed to upgrade our 1957 furnace and ductwork. Going into another winter rejoining the old metal duct that always came loose, and relying on a furnace that ran long after the thermostat was turned off, was a situation we no longer wanted to have. Since we were in need of replacing the furnace, we decided to add air conditioning as well. After all, the summers seem to to be getting hotter in the Bay Area. Nick was the ATLAS representative I met. Unlike the other bids I took - five in all - he was so thorough explaining the process, answering all my questions and concerns. And (drumroll, please), NICK WAS THE ONLY HVAC REP WHO DID A MANUAL-J CALCULATION OF MY HOME! Honestly, this stood out to me more than all of the positive reviews I had read about ATLAS online. On his visit we went room-to-room, taking note of the registers and lack thereof. Per his suggestions, we settled on relocating and enlarging the duct that supplied air upstairs, enlarging the air intake in the hallway for better circulation, and adding a register in the kitchen. In comparison to the other bids, both in cost and proposal of work, choosing ATLAS over the rest was a no-brainer. 10-days before the scheduled 3-day job was a pre-site visit with Scott. He went over the scope of work and familiarize himself with my house since it was his first visit. He was so easy to talk to which, frankly, helped calm my nerves ramped up by weeks of anticipation. I was set even more at ease after meeting and interacting with the three installers - Eric, Joe, and Mark. They started work on time as promised - 8:30, and at the end of each day they made sure to clean up their equipment and work area. More noteworthy was the fact that they were very polite and mindful that they were in our home. And there was nothing that I asked out of concern or ignorance that they did not try to answer to my satisfaction.
