I was feeling less than confident yesterday and feeling weighed down by my hair in this heat when I made a last minute appointment with Saghar at AALAM for the first time. I saw that the salon had good ratings and just decided to go for it. The whole staff was extremely welcoming and kind throughout my time there. When I told Saghar that I wanted to chop off all my hair because I was tired of dealing with it, she gently pried deeper into what I actually wanted and how we could help me feel lighter without doing the chop. I would have for sure regretted going any shorter than we did. I am so grateful for this experience. I was of course nervous to try somewhere new but she delivered everything expected and more. I'm not a big talker during hair appts, and the conversation did not feel forced, nor did I feel weird for holding silence for a bit. I haven't been to Aalam in quite some time. I switched from Mary to one of the male hair stylist. It wasn't a smart move. my last three appointments here were, well... dreadful. Considering that I would pay nearly $100.00 for somebody to take scissors to my hair - I should leave feeling excited and confident. The male stylist I chose to have cut my hair off (due to my boyfriend's fondness of the man) was a disappointment. The first time around he gave me what I considered a "tom boy" hair cut. Fell flat on my shoulders with little style to it. When I came back in to have him correct what I had originally asked of him, he decided -with his own free will- to cut my hair according to the woman next to us. Tapered it far too short in the back and angled it long in the front. This was what I asked for (longer in the front than the back) but he managed to do this 4-5 inches shorter than I asked. I did cry. Tears of sorrow. I have not been back since. Aalam stylist/management ....when you choose to charge customers a high price, you should be 100% certain your stylist can deliver. I do believe I found a new hair place to go to! Tried them out after seeing their D Magazine awards and rave reviews and searching for almost 2 years now for a new hair place after my guy moved out of state. I called them up on a Monday (yes, they answered the phone:)) and Mary was able to cut my hair first thing the next morning. My hair was pretty damaged at the ends since I was about a month late getting a trim but she was able to get a lot of the split ends off without taking too much length. I like the technique of cutting your hair wet, blow drying and styling it, then cleaning it up after its dry. I have terribly curly hair and she was one of the few stylists I've been to that has actually been able to blow out my hair so that was a huge plus for me. Reasonably priced, too- I think my hair cut was $70 before tip. I would def recommend. read more

I am extremely satisfied with the finished look. This was the first time I ever had my hair cut by a razor. It was really cool! My former hairdresser from Toni & Guy who I have seen off and on since 2005 is now at Aalam. When he sent out the news, I made sure I took part in the discount for old clients at this new salon. Aalam is very hip in it's stylings--in the salon and hair wise. Mansour is magical with the scissors! He really can cut hair in a way I've never had my hair cut before. I love that I don't really have to say much about what I want, and it always seems to turn out perfect. I would frequent Aalam if only I had the dough to live that lifestyle on the regular! I am extremely picky when it comes to my hair. After moving to a new area last year I'd been looking for a new salon that was more convenient for me. I'd tried a number of salons in the area but just was not happy with the results. I have very thin, extremely curly, baby fine textured hair so it is not the easiest to work with. I work out every day so I need a style that is easy to take care of since I wash my hair every day. Some of the cuts I'd had before were either too difficult to take care & if they were easy they just didn't look like much of a style. As a result I had not been happy with how my hair looked I'd researched a number of salons. One day last week when I'd just had enough of dealing with my hair I decided it was time to find a new stylist. I'd read about AALAM & thought I would give them a try. When I called the salon I told them about my hair & what I needed. They recommended an appointment with Johnnie Walker. When I sat down with Johnnie we chatted about my hair, my lifestyle & what I was looking for in maintenance. He studied my face shape in the mirror & had me turn to the side so that he could study my profile. He said he recommended a cut that would take most of the length off the back so it would be easy to take care of but keeping enough length to frame my face on the sides. He said the cut he recommended would give me the versatility to wear it either curly or straight. I thought that sounded good. After shampooing Johnnie cut my hair wet. He said he wanted to blow it dry then look at it again to make sure it was balanced if I wore it straight. Johnnie then checked all of it & cut a couple of more pieces. He was meticulous. When he was finished all I can say is "wow". My hair looked absolutely incredible! It framed my facial features perfectly & the profile looked great as well. The next day after working out I washed & dried my hair. It looked great after I did it as well, which is the test of a great haircut. Some of them look great when the stylist does it but never look right again after you do it at home. We went to a party that evening & everyone complimented me on how great my hair looked. The salon concept is that one person colors your hair and another person cuts it. For me they booked my appointments where I would have an hour wait time to go from color to cut. They did not tell me about this until after my color was finished and then seemed shocked that I was not going to wait for an hour to get my hair cut. But them wanting me to wait an hour was not as bad as the highlight/color job that they did. I got partial highlights and color however you could not see any highlights at all. It was as if she used the same color all over. Since I had never been there I had brought a picture to show her. Not a picture of a super model. A picture of me with my hair before the fading & growth and she still could not get it. The manager and another color person said that my hair had no highlights (with a bunch of excuses) but instead of not charging me for the highlights or fixing it right then (remember I had a hour to kill anyway) they had me return two days and another person but in highlights. I would have been better off going to a beauty school with a student at least they would have corrected the problem right then and not charged a high rate. I am a dude, and it wasn't so easy for me to take my wife's advice and try this place. Plus, I am notoriously cheap when it comes to spending money on haircuts. It took me years to move up from the $10 - $20 chop shops. What you spend on your hair is like spending money on shock absorbers for your car. The more you spend, the better the quality. I've been here twice to get my hair cut. I saw Kay both times. Let's just say that even though I'm new to an upscale salon, I've had my hair cut by people who have worked for Jose Eber and who have worked at Arden's Red Door salon (wife's stylists). Kay has by far, delivered the best cut/style/experience I've ever had. She is polite, sweet and asks/listens for feedback. My wife can't keep her hands off my hair... and guys... isn't that what we all want? :-) As for the salon, the staff has always been attentive and friendly. The shop is kept VERY clean (much appreciated) and it has a very calming/relaxed modern vibe. It is NOT girly in the least bit. This is a very upscale modern salon. I go to Micheal who specializes in color. He's able to take my dark black hair to blonde without damaging it. I have seen him do all kinds of color transformations. If you are wanting someone to color your hair exactly as you ask I suggest going to Micheal. I stumbled onto this place actually looking for a place to get my hair done through an internet search. I read the reviews and I couldn't be happier. I set an appointment for the weekend first thing with Mansoor who is the owner of Aalam Salon. He is amazing! I have been searching for a long, long time someone who was able to do exactly what I wanted. His technique is off the charts. I cut about 6 inches off and normally I wouldn't take such a risk but I am happy I did. I was looking for a cut that was similar to Victoria Beckham's famous bob haircut, he did an AMAZING job! I left feeling like a new person entirely. I will be coming back from now on. Ive already scheduled my next appointment for color too! The salon is very clean, and the products are wonderful. Reply to Aalam the Salon Mansour: Thank you for taking the time to explain why, as a business owner, you have changed your policy. We differ in opinion in that I feel, when you visit an upscale salon, you should walk out feeling better than when you got there. Unless you have updated the policy, interns are doing the blow drys and not stylists. Not only was nothing posted in the salon prior to your policy change, I was never notified at booking and was just charged at the end of my visit. Yes, the charge was waived but only when I complained. Furthermore, I was never given the option to have a blow dry by a senior stylist at any subsequent appointment and I was told on a different occasion that the senior stylist I wanted didn't do just style outs so your reply conflicts with what I have been told. Additionally, as I have multiple friends that were also clients of yours, it is clear that we have all been treated differently. Some receiving notice at the time of booking and others who never did. All of us got our blow outs by interns who aren't paid but rather are trying to gain experience. (Yes- we asked how much of the $40 they received) Thank you for giving me the option of leaving the salon with soaking wet hair. That is a wonderful option on a cool winter day or when I have errands to run. With all of that being said, and because your response focused on the customer experience, I would really love to know why when posting my initial review, not only did I not receive a yelp response from you or Nasser but I was blackballed from the salon? Upon attempting to book my next appointment, I was told I could not without Nasser's approval. I was told he would call at the end of the day and he did not. I left a message and never received a call back to address. Obviously there was an awareness of my displeasure with the policy. Since you knew who left the review enough to put a note on my account, you also had the opportunity to call and discuss with me or choose at that time to respond to the initial review with what you just posted rather than blackballing me. If you decide to raise prices for any service that is your prerogative. If a client voices displeasure (and there have been more clients than just myself who have done just that ) you should probably pay attention to that feedback. You should be thoughtful in deciding how to proceed with that policy and understand you may lose business. That's the clients prerogative. What should never ever happen is punishing a client for voicing their opinion in a professional manner. That is not a way to run a business and it's not a way to earn future clientele. read more

So my husband recommended this place I believe due to his Ex having a glued on wig ... all I wanted was trim the dead hair at the ends and light layer and conditioning treatment!! I dropped in on a Friday afternoon for a blow out. I had several events this weekend and didn't want to worry about doing my hair. They offered me a glass of wine and I waited a few minutes for before Nikki came and introduced herself. The wash and head massage were awesome. She was very gentle and I appreciate that they use cruelty free products. Nikki took the time to make my hair look fresh, clean, and bouncy with the right amount of curl. So, it would appear that staff seem to be writing them - this is apparent by how many reviews have been filtered. I went to Salon Aalam based on the Dmagazine "Best of" assumption. i wanted highlights on my long brown hair. Bottom line: I paid $350 for highlights that destroyed my hair. They would not blow dry my hair afterward because I did not schedule a blow dry...(Really? Was I supposed to know this?) Since I left with wet hair, I couldn't see how bad my hair looked!! When my hair dried, it looked like a horse's tail- dry, dead and lifeless. Seriously, It was so damaged that I had to cut it all off and wear a wig until my hair looked like hair again. Yes. it was THAT bad!!! Don't believe the D-magazine hype. The owners must have had a lot of friends to cast votes for them. Avoid this salon. read more

This was my first time at the salon and first cut after maybe 8 months of letting it grow and get unruly. I have very thick hair with mixed textures that is hard to manage, and have even been turned away as a client by less skilled "stylists" or I get a fast, sloppy cut with no blow dry, so I'm always apprehensive about trying a new place. I am so glad I went in for a long layer cut today! The stylist was very informative of what the plan for the cut was going to be and made sure it was ok with me before proceeding. He took the time to ask where I part my hair, and how I prefer face framing layers. As he was working my hair he let me know what each product was being used and the benefits of each. I absolutely loved the shine from the Kerastase smoothing milk and the natural scents of the products (I have severe allergies to a lot of scents which is usually a problem in salons but nothing triggered me today.) Stylist was very detail oriented when finishing my cut, adding texture and exceptionally good blow dry! Owner came by to check the cut and ask how I was treated which was extra courteous, I can tell he takes his time to really educate his stylists in salon service. Really excellent experience today! I'm not the easiest client because of my hair length, texture and going too long between cuts recently but everyone was very professional and my hair looks and feels phenomenal! read more

Johnnie also takes into account that I will not let anyone but him touch my hair so he cuts it so that it grows in beautifully-- even after 6 months of growth it generally doesn't look too shabby! I see Mansour & he starts with a relaxing scalp massage while he washes your hair. Then he takes his time cutting your hair to get it perfect. This place is a nightmare. I usually only go to the best salons, & picked this one when I moved to the area because of the great reviews. I believe they were written by the staff because this was the worst experience of my life. First of all, the initial point of contact (the receptionist) should be friendly & welcoming, but at this salon she was a total snob. Next, the colorist didn't listen to what I wanted, spent about 2 minutes with me before he started to mix, & lo & behold the color came out terrible. He tried to fix it but it only went from terrible to bad. Almost everyone I encountered at this salon was very rough on my hair. I admittingly have a tender scalp, but the colorist & stylist were literally tearing pieces out while working on me. The stylist was the worst I've ever been to, & I really can't believe he's allowed to work in a salon. First of all, when brushing my hair he was yanking pieces out, as I've mentioned. As I was squinting, he put the brush in my hand & said "You do it". I mean... !!!!!!!! really?! Then, after I brushed my own hair, he asked what I wanted & I said I wanted to change my style up with a side bang. This guy brushed half of my bangs over half of my face, & cut straight across. I kid you not. I sat there stunned with a half-smile, as I feared if I spoke up, he would take the scissors to my hair again, which I was NOT going to let happen. As if that's not bad enough, he started blow-drying my hair on the highest heat setting possible, directing it at my scalp, & when I said it was too hot he argued with me that it wasn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The stylist was the 1st guy you see on the right when you walk in. He was placed next to the salon owner, who was a doll & offered to fix what they did to me, but I didn't even want to go back. All of this for over $200 & I will never go back. In fact, I'm considering reporting them for abuse because of the overheated hair dryer. That's just wrong. UPDATE 10/1/2014: I am just seeing the reply to my review from the "Creative Director". On top of how I was treated at this salon I am now being called a liar. Good job, sir.
