Previously, I've done this repair myself and it's a relatively quick and easy repair if you know how to watch YouTube. Unfortunately, we had a family issue which prevented me from handling it this time so we hired the first people who answered. One technician came and diagnosed the problem with a quote $851. I agreed. The next day, a different technician completed the job quickly and if you've ever done this job, it's plug and play and the most time consuming thing is unscrewing the panels. Total labor time across both visits was only about 40 minutes. Drive time, let's give them 2 hours. Unfortunately, the invoice showed just a single $851 charge with no breakdown. I assumed there was something a little more technical than an ignitor. When I questioned the bill, I was told the ignitor part alone was $200 or more. What does or more mean? Let's say a total of 2 hours of labor was involved and a $250 part. That's $300 per hour in labor! While I understand businesses have overhead and travel costs, this price felt surprisingly high for such a short repair and no transparency. Lesson learned

When they came out they pretty much immediately discovered that someone had shut off my gas. They were at my house for a little under a half hour and charged me $250 to turn the gas lever on. When I asked for an explanation of cost they told me they actually lost money on the call because it took the technician 45 minutes to drive to my house due to snow. They also said they lost money on the call because it costs at least $300 to have someone drive to a house and walk in to provide a service regardless of how long they are there or what the issue is. Obviously I had no way of knowing that it was going to snow when I made the appointment/my furnace stopped working or that the technician didn't live near me. I'm still not sure why that would be factored in to the price. I would have preferred to move the appointment if I had known I'd be charged more due to snowy travel times. I would have also like to know that it was going to cost hundreds of dollars regardless of the problem. I was very surprised because I had such a great experience with them before as far as pricing and explanation and felt taken advantage of this time. I value the work of electricians and technicians but $250 to turn on a gas lever in under a half hour seems very steep to me.

Being naïve, I kept going back to this company. A week later, Surprise! My blower motor went out again on my AC unit. I yet again called them, they essentially told me they don't have time for me and they are focusing on warranty work only at this time and my 1 year warranty expired. They told me to find someone else to do the work. I found a great company called Peak Home Performance that does what they do. Jeff the Service Rep went through the whole system and gave me a report saying they installed most of the AC and Furnace incorrectly. He asked to see the report that Golden heating has performed when they fixed the blower motor the last two times. "Well guess what, they do not provide this to you". I told him they didn't give me anything. He then told me I should go back to the company that did this install as Golden should stand by this work and cover the labor as my 2 year old unit is covered under warranty. Well I called them and I think their only customer service reps name is Lisa? Anyways she told me they can't do anything because I'm out of warranty. She said that I should have told them about the installation being installed wrong so they could have fixed it under warranty. If you are following. I am at this point like "WTF"? When Mike's people came by later, they refuted everything I had been told, cleaned the parts that I was told to replace, and showed us an internal filter that I didn't know we even had much less had to clean. They couldn't troubleshoot because the error code was not present when they visited. However, I had told them the error code was not present when I called, so I don't understand why they didn't say "call us back when the error code comes back". Also, I told them the brand of boiler when I called, and they sent a technician who had never worked on this brand before. The technician felt bad that he was charging me for nothing and tried to get the trip charge waived, but the Precise office said no. So they get two stars instead of one because the tech was trying to make up for his company's poor policy.
