John's great! He always gives us great service and takes the time to explain the issues and explains the options to fix them. He never tries to up-sell like a lot of other places do. He's an all around great guy, and I appreciate all the work he's put into our vehicle! Thanks, John. read more

Getting my vehicles smogged is a breeze here..no bs no upsells..in out and done. Thank you Jon for the awesome service.

Went in at around 4pm on a weekday. There were no other cars being serviced, so after a quick filling-in of paperwork, my car was rolled into the garage and worked on. It lasted about twenty minutes or so, give or take. While I was waiting, there was a beautiful dog to feed and play with. John was friendly during the process, and it seemed more genuine than trying to keep his business running. The price was quite reasonable as well. I didn't even have to show the coupon. He just set the price to the discounted amount from the start. Great experience. I'll be back if I'm still around Davis the next time I need a smog check! (Call in advance to make sure he has enough time to get through your car, especially if you plan your visit later in the day!) read more

A1 Smog - Smog Check Stations Near Me - Davis, California

We are extremely grateful to A1 Smog in Davis-Jon and his team for fixing a major issue on our Prius. Our catalytic converter was stolen twice, then we had a cat shield installed, after which the car did not pass the smog check. Jon and his team took the time and effort to thoroughly examine the car, find and fix the problem. They ordered and installed a new PCM, which fixed the issue and the car passed the smog check. There was a delay in the part shipment over the holidays, and I highly appreciate Jon's professionalism. He called to keep us up to date and apologized about the delay. Finally everything worked out well. I highly recommend A1 Smog in Davis to everyone because of their professional work and care for their customers. read more

Super good shop, extremely trustworthy, and knows his stuff. I was traveling from Colorado and the car drastically overheated. I pulled into a Valero station, and was really scared and upset, as I know next to nothing about car issues. Jon happened to be standing in line to purchase something as I was telling the clerk about it and not knowing what to do. Jon approached me and said he knew things about cars, and that although he wasn't trying to sell me anything, maybe he could help me. He opened the hood and saw the issue. I had blown my radiator. He offered to take it into his shop, which was just down the block. He seemed very trustworthy, so I decided to do just that. He drove my car for me, since I was scared to at that point, and let me drive his car back. Jon went over and above what many mechanics do. He explained everything to me, costs associated with it, and length of time. When after one day of repairs the issue was still not completely resolved, he explained the further troubleshooting, possible outcomes, and possible further repairs needed. I had to fly to Milwaukee at that point, and he kept me informed while I was at my event. The vehicle did not need the most drastic, extensive repairs that had been a possibility (new engine), but just needed a new thermostat along with the new radiator and hoses. Since I was flying back in late on a Saturday night, he arranged a way that I could pick up the vehicle at midnight on Saturday. I have driven back to Colorado since the vehicle was fixed by Jon, and everything works perfect. He even fixed a accessory charger that wasn't working, and I think he fixed a door light that was on all the time, because it's not on anymore. These are just a couple examples of how he goes above and beyond. I completely appreciate Jon's honesty, trustworthiness, and top-notch work. He treated me with respect and kindness, and I feel he got the repairs done in record time. Absolutely recommend this shop to any car repairs you may need. read more

I absolutely recommend this place. The service guy is so nice, fast and effective. He offered everyone cold bottles of water. He promised to get me out in 15min and I got out in 15 min. However, there is no air conditioning in the waiting area. But it was only for 15 min. read more

I just got a smog check on my diesel truck at A1 Smog in Davis (on Chiles Rd). The owner John was very nice, it was done in a timely manner (20 mins) and was $20 cheaper than anywhere else in town (for a diesel truck) using the little green coupon machine. I don't want to sound like an advertisement but I feel a good service deserves my recognition! read more

Quality work for fair prices has kept me coming back for years, especially since they've expanded into repairs as well. They're also STAR certified which makes things so much simpler for me and my '96er. Jon is quite reliable with his estimates, which gives me one less thing to worry about knowing I'll have my car back on schedule and without breaking the bank. read more

I had previously gone here to smog my cars. He is always fast and the waiting room has water and coffee. Jon repaired the window motor on my wife's Subaru and was able to keep the costs low. I just got new tires for my truck and the process couldn't have been better. The price per tire ended up being cheaper than online for quality tires. read more

I feel so lucky to have Jon and his quality shop. Since getting my car smogged have regularly brought my cars here for service, and receive absolutely excellent care. From brake jobs to regular tune ups and scheduled services, A-1 can't be beat. I prefer to bring my cars here than to the dealers, for better personal treatment and quality work. A+! read more

high recommend!! this is a great shop, with highly skilled and attentive service folk. my car, a 2010 honda fit, hadn't been driven for a while and wouldn't pass a smog test. these folks fixed it for a minimum charge and voila! it passed! both my car and i are extremely grateful! read more

I went here based on reviews and convenience (literally live about 3 minutes away), and I am glad I did. While not a huge difference, the price seems, on average, about $5 to $10 less than other Davis places. John (the owner, I presume?) was quick, and apologetic for the "wait" (I was there for a less than a half hour). He seemed very customer service oriented, both with me and with two customers who came in after me. He found out who was in a hurry (they came in at the same time), and offered the guy not as much in a hurry a discount to do his second. Real stand-up move, for both customers. I am not a big fan of giving five stars, but this guy is pretty close, and would love to leave a 4.5 read more

Very professional company and decently easy to get scheduled. This is a small business I'll keep going to as long as I live in Davis.

I came into Jon's shop for a smog check this morning, and he finished it in 30 minutes. Very quick. Five-star service! read more

HANDS DOWN THE BEST SMOG STATION IN DAVIS! John provides excellent customer service and is very friendly. John even offered to buy me a soda from the Catering Truck that serves his area. I got a SMOG check done and was out in less than 15 minutes! The price was also about $10 cheaper than other locations in Davis. This was my second time visiting A1 Smog and both occasions have been extremely positive. This may sound strange, but I'm actually looking forward to my next Smog visit! 100% Recommend A1 Smog. read more

John Epling is a great guy, nice, honest, and straightforward. I didn't have to call or make an appointment just drove in between classes and got my car smog tested in less than 20 minutes. Only cost me 48 bucks! cheaper than every other smog place in Davis. This place is a test-only so he can do any smog test you need. He owns and runs the business himself in the small garage so you can ask him what's up and follow along the process if you're interested. I will definitely return to him whenever I need a smog check in the future, no hesitations. Keep this good man in business! read more

Obviously, I agree with everyone else that has written a review about this place. John (the man who did my smog check) was extremely and genuinely friendly. He was very quick with my car and informed me about wait time and what the procedure was for the whole smog check deal. It took him 20 minutes from the moment he took my keys to start and returned them to me after finishing. He made sure I got all my paperwork in order before I left and even opened and closed the door for me upon arriving and leaving! Call me a sucker but that was the cherry on top. Overall, wonderful service without hassle and very quick. I will definitely do all my smog checks here. read more

Probably the quickest and most comfortable experience I have had at a Smog Test center ever! I am really impressed with the service that I received here, especially after getting a great deal to smog my Jeep, which has had major problems passing smog in the past. I only ran into one problem and that was my gas cap had a slight leak and failed, but Instead of the technician offering to sell me one, or have me drive halfway across town to pick one up, he threw it in and gave it to me, Free of charge! How awesome is that? Customer Service to the extreme! The test took almost 20 minutes and that included the time I drove in to the time I drove out. The technician, Jon, who also happens to be the owner, is very efficient and is no stranger to getting the job done right and quickly. When I am in the need of a smog test again, I won't hesitate to make this place my first stop. read more

Great service, super quick, and the owner has an adorable dog that greets you. Would absolutely recommend!

One of the best experiences I've ever had with an auto shop. I got a smog check with Jon a couple of weeks ago and he was quick and easy to work with. He fixed a small hose for me FOR FREE and told me that I might need to check my radiator soon. A couple weeks later I bring in my car to Jon to replace the radiator. I figured it would take a couple of days to order the part and replace but Jon finished the job by the end of the day. He also gave me a ride home after I dropped the car off! Very nice guy, and you can tell he's honest, knowledgeable and hard working. I would definitely come here again if issues arise with my vehicle. read more

I'm new to Davis so I really have to depend on Yelp to know which places to go for specific purposes. They did not exaggerate when everyone gives it 5/5 stars! The service was super friendly and professional, best of all, I was out within 15min! There is the most adorable dog there that will sit next to you while you wait. Also the price here is the most affordable compared to other places I called. Definitely recommend and I would come again for my next smog check. read more

The best place in town for auto repair or smog work. I've been to another place in town with "good reviews". The other guys always give grief and it's like pulling teeth to get them to do the job properly. Not with A1. Good honest work that's For the customers benefit. A1 for life read more

After dealing with a much more expensive smog shop in Davis last time, I was more then happy to try a new shop. I was at work, so the Misses went to A1 to get her Honda smogged, she loved it, was treated with respect, and had no issues at all (where as we find many Davis shops or dealerships treat her like the stereotypical female). We all hate our annual smogs, but, I hope this shop flourishes here! read more
