Dangerous car shop. I had been bringing my car in for oil and filter changes. Then it came time to a big 60,000 mile service and they told me I had to replace my brakes. It took them two days to do the job because they said they were waiting for parts. They gave it back to me and the brakes felt like sponges, huge stopping distance. I felt extremely unsafe and called them because I was concerned. They told me it will take a week for the brakes to break in and this was normal. After a week, no change. I brought the car in and they eventually admitted they put on the wrong brakes because they could not get the parts in on time! Great! Put me in serious danger and deny it for a week! I now go to Honda Craft where I can trust the mechanics AND they don't charge $1000 for a 60,000 mile service. read more

I have a '65 Mustang which began experiencing some trouble with the clutch/transmission. I gave the car to Frank barely drivable and got back a car that I couldn't believe was mine. Working on an old car like mine isn't easy -- a lot of things happen to a car over 48 years and you have no idea what you'll find once you get in there. Good service but expensive. Several years back after several jobs with them was quoted $1000 for a tune-up (and other service), and immediately afterward the car failed SMOG. I ended up having to pay them ANOTHER $280 to get the car serviced to pass SMOG. In addition, when they replaced my radiator a year earlier they failed to replace the thermostat and the car eventually overheated due to failed fluid circulation. read more

Below is an e-mail regarding A1 we received from our daughter after returning to college. Just a bit of background first. We bought a new 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a Jeep dealer in San Jose. There were two problems we identified and took to them for repair, one item was the passenger air bag light coming on, and the other was poor/hesitant acceleration. Although the dealer replaced the seat belt assembly the problem kept occurring and was never resolved. The dealer was not able to identify and repair the poor/hesitant acceleration. Both issues we have lived with for years. Recently the check engine light came on so we searched out other sources besides the dealer for repairs. We were referred to A-1 and took it there. A-1 identified the problems, ordered the parts and installed them when they arrived. Frank called us and said they have been driving it and the problems appear to have been resolved and it is ready for pick up. I picked it up and drove away. Our daughter returned to college and here is her e-mail regarding the work A-1 did. ..."Secondly, I want to tell you that my car is handling soooo much better. I noticed when I was going up the Sunol grade my car wasn't dying like it normally did and my car even weighed more with all my crap in it. It also accelerated ALOT better when merging onto the freeway. I am very impressed with the work those guys did to fix it and a little disappointed the Jeep dealer couldn't find and fix it years ago when we first took it to them under warranty." Every time I'm in the Bay Area my car seems to act up. But here, they fix the problem and provide you w details on the how and why. They also do more than a cursory diagnostic -- they let you know potential problems, signs to look out for, and urgency of potential repairs. Went into get my cadillac 1992 air conditioning converted to R34 and they were very helpful and knowledgable and fixed it with efficient service. Brought my car in for smog, seeing as how A-1 is AAA certified, ASE Blue shield certified, no BBB complaints, no terrible reviews online, etc.(I did a lot of HW) and I needed a new, honest mechanic for myself and my mom. I knew it was going to fail because my check engine light was on, but I wanted to see how they would work with me. First the pros: The receptionist was very nice. That's about it. Now the cons: They charge $60 for a smog check, and $40 for a retest, when most places, even gas stations that don't do repairs(aka. make money fixing cars that fail), are somewhere in the neighborhood of $30-40, then free retesting until you pass. OK, I'll give it a shot anyway, I'm here to try a new place. A little while later, 'Chuck' calls me back. He informs me, rudely, that my check engine light was on, which fails the test and wasted his time, and says for $250, which is 2 hours labor, he'll see what it is. I know that checking engine lights is as simple as plugging in a diagnostic tool, and that only once the code is read can the problem be ascertained. It could be something as simple as a low fluid that could take 2 minutes, or something much more serious that could take many more than 2 hours. Don't try and rip me off, estimating a flat fee of $250, that's unreasonable. He then proceeds to tell me, snidely, that if I pick it up, I'm still going to owe HIM $60 bucks. First off, I don't owe you anything buddy, you aren't the shop and you aren't the owner. Second, I know it's $60 dollars, I have the estimate in my hand, I'm not an idiot. In summation, their prices are too high, they charged me $60 to look at my dashboard and tell me something that I could see, and then the one mechanic I spoke with was unprofessional and rude. I had an engine noise in an older car that needed checking. Patty carefully took down all my information and concerns and Frank called me at the end of both days my car was being serviced. They took the time to explain what they found and how they recommended fixing it. Some may be concerned about high rates, but by doing it right the first time, I believe I actually saved money. To top it all off, I got a courtesy call a week later to check on the status of the repair! I'll definitely be back next time I need car service. read more

My son after sending me to different places for repair told me about A1 Auto Tech. I brought my Suburban to A1 Auto Tech in early June with an engine hesitation and for a brake inspection. I had a brake fade problems that my son told me about when he was driving it back and forth to Los Angeles. Along with some other fixes that needed attention I took my Suburban to Frank for an analysis and repair. A1 Auto was busy when I had it towed in. So I left it with A1 to inspect the following week. Frank gave me a call and told me he found a problem with the intake throttle body, the rear brakes and brake hoses. Frank gave me an explanation about each part that needed repair or replacement. He also found my inner brake pads were wearing down quicker than the outer pads. He explained that this indicated a brake caliper problem. Safety is one item I don't mess around with since my son drives it to LA. With the detail description from A1, I gave the Ok for Frank and his team to fix it all. A1 would keep me informed of the work being done and when it will be complete. Communications with A1 was excellent. I would highly recommend A1 Auto for your repair needs. Thank you A1! read more

I really like this place! They are very friendly and the owner even comes out to talk to you personally and explains everything that is going on with the car. I've never had anything but great service and I am happy knowing that my car is in good hands. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that they are so darn expensive! Update: 9/30/10 the mgr. Patricia S. who wrote remarks re: this, says if I told them I was retiring the car I would not have to pay the $100 deductible, Well like she said they should have informed me about the state car retiring program. I did retire the car w/the state, on saturday 6/26/10 at Pick and Pull .On friday 6/25/10 early afternoon, God led me to go and see about my car, find out about when smog inspection was done, when I got there my car was done and sitting in the lot. Even when I was asked to pay the $100 deductible, I was still not informed of the choice that I could retire the car w/the state of CA program, and how to go about it. So I paid the money. I came home and called the State Auto consumer line and they told me I could retire it, and what State office to go to on Winchester Blvd. and do the paper work and have certification and 1/2 hour, to take my car to pick and pull in San Jose, because if I did not do it on 6/25/10 , they could not guarantee the budget will still have money to pay out to me because state budget ends6/30/10. So I hustled and did this. But mgr. Patricia did not ask if I retired the car when she wrote her response on Yelp. So, I guess it's cheaper to reimburse $9 for my cab fare to pick up my car instead of $100 I paid for the State smog inspection deductibe. God Is So Good. read more
