After learning the history of Smokin' Ed and the new Pepper X, I really wanted to try it. I order (mail order) 3 different pepper x products: special reserve, table sauce & taco sauce. So far I've only had the opportunity to try the table sauce so far and I am not disappointed at all. While it offers a really good heat index, the flavor of the mix is good. I've put it on everything. The website and ordering process is very easy and they offer different specials upon signing up/ordering. My order was fulfilled with a few days and arrived in about 3 days or so. I will definitely keep them in mind for future purchases.

I saw a YouTube video about Smokin Eddie Currie the owner and learned he had developed a pepper hotter than the Carolina Reaper called Pepper X. No a real snazzy name but it has been officially acknowledged at THE hottest pepper by The Guinness book. Smokin Eddie wasn't around but I bought some sauce anyway. They were having a holiday sale at 30% off so I had to get some, tis the season. You should know about the Scoville scale. Pepper hotness is a science and on the scale, the Pepper X is at the top of the chart. A Pimiento Pepper is up to 500 on the scale. Previously the Carolina Reaper was 2,500,000, yeah, that's two million five hundred thousand. Pepper X comes in a 2,693.000. You can see my photo of the Guinness record. The name of the store really describes it best "South African Food Shop." This means that the shop carries bits of all the various types of cuisines popular in and indicative of the multitude of ethnic backgrounds of that country - in my case people like my husband Kevin. Given that the ethnic mix in the country includes everything from British, the Afrikaners (a culture created out of odd mixed German, Dutch and French providence), Indian, Malay as well as all the various native cultures such as Zulus (Shaka Zulu), Xhosa (Nelson Mandela) - and a bunch of others you are probably not familiar with and I don't really have the time to cover here - explains the schizophrenic nature of the shelves that the other reviewer talked about. This is because not only did new things get created but their ancestors also brought things from their countries of origin which have now become part of the South African food culture - British jam and shortbread (especially the EatSumMore brand) being examples the previous reviewer was able to pick out. So for the record we live on the other side of the country and normally we get our boerewors or South African Farmer's Sausage from Dittmer's - which is only a 30 minute drive away from where we live. But before I found out about Dittmer's a and other more geographically convenient places to obtain the items of my husband's youth I ordered here a few times. Given that biltong - a spiced and dry meat product similar to jerky and a popular snack item - is hard for South Africans who live in America to come by we purchased some along with other various things. I would guess that this shop's mail order business of such iconic items is probably what keeps them afloat. Their onsite butchery and spice market probably explains the smell - as basically anywhere there is meat aging (unless kept super cold) is going to have a certain odour, for lack of a better word. I would say even more for a South African butchery since many South African meats are heavily rubbed with Coriander - which can be very aromatic. For the record the biltong was decent although a bit fatty and not quite as wet as I like it. Boerewors was good and the droëwors was excellent though as were the other items I suspect - as the next nearest South African markets and restaurants I could find were either up in the middle of Virginia or all the way west in Georgia - for those SA'ffers in the Carolina's that this place serves as a lifeline to their culture and a taste of home.

We started with a few drinks, and our waiter recommended several dishes, including the Chicken Alpino, Gobi, Chicken Pakora, and Keema Biryani for the main course. We ended the meal with Sweet Paan. The Chicken Alpino was absolutely delicious it was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Everyone at our table loved it so much that we ordered another serving. It's a unique dish that's definitely worth trying. The Keema Biryani was also excellent, and the Sweet Paan was the perfect way to finish the meal. The service was outstanding, and our waiter made great recommendations throughout the evening. We'll definitely be visiting again and highly recommend trying the Chicken Alpino!
