Rat Shit Storage Facility (16 photos)…read more I'm sure most out there are not nomadic and lived the life style I have in the past which has meant a storage shed or two somewhere most of my life. I've spent the day going through one of those sheds and was appalled at the condition of the contents. I'm wise to not storing any food stuffs but this time around the rats had chewed boxes, books, papers and stuffed items to get material to make their nests. They had pissed and shit on most everything in the shed including a couch, recliner, overstuffed chair, blankets and cushions, all of which had to be taken to the dump. There were nests where afterbirth was present and 5 dead carcasses intertwined with boxes and furniture along with droppings from one end to the other, top to bottom. None of the tenant insurance or property protection programs covers rats or vermin infestation or damage and a trip to small claims court will net you nothing as the owner will argue and point out the provision in their rental agreement that states they are not liable for rodents or pest damages. Rats and mice are just a part of dealing with day to day problems in the self-storage business. My suggestion is when someone is considering a public storage shed to do their research and don't be fooled by a website, analyze the quality of the property and buildings, ask if the provider has a pest control prevention program in place and once moved in see what can be done to protect the contents (peppermint oil, fresh cab, rat poison and rat bait) and make periodic visits to verify the condition of the contents. Customer service is above and beyond, from day one, to the day we moved out, the ladies who helped us took the time to explain everything and answered all of our questions. Very personal & not cold or rushed at all. The area is gated and you can use a keypad or the app to open the gate. We opted to get the app & never had a problem using it to enter. It is a lot nicer than having to lean our your window or get out to type the code in the keypad, especially on cold rainy days. The app never glitched & you can view your payments & accounts too. I never felt worried about our belonging being here in this storage unit. I honestly forgot we had it for a moment or two until we drove past and remembered, oh yeah, that's were are stuff is all at. I hoenstly don't think I would have been that carefree about it if it wasn't behind locked gates. So, for me that was one less stress to worry about. When it was time for us to move out, all our belongings were in the exact same condition as we had left them with no issues.
