I do not recommend A Star Smog at all! They are rejecting the Groupon vouchers. When I got there there was a man already frustrated because the employee didn't want to accept his Groupon deal. I got a Groupon deal and the employee was giving us none sense excuses like if we were stupid. I just wasted my gas and time going there. He refused to do the smog check to my car! I came in early in the morning with my 2008 Honda Odyssey and I was aware that he would charge pass or fail. Anyhow he failed me talking about their was smoke coming out my exhaust. Said I needed to take it to a mechanic and have it looked at and then come try again within 30 days for $10. I asked why, what he thought was wrong and he said he didn't want to lead me wrong because he is not a mechanic. To go see a mechanic. That was a bunch of bull**** what he didn't know was that my dad is a mechanic and has his own smog guy in his shop. I could have went to him in San Jose but didn't, instead paid for convenience. So did what smog dude at Chevron told me to do and took my car to my mechanic and he looked at it and their was NOTHING wrong, then his smog mechanic guy did a smog check the very next day and it passed. He said straight out that they cheated me and most likely if I did bring my vehicle back, he most likely would still failed me. So just be careful, I paid $75 for fail, gas to SJ and back and $45 to get it smog check again in San Jose. If my dad wasn't a mechanic I would have paid for more out the pocket. read more

A star smog has new owners. Not sure how long they have owned this smog station, but I feel most of the reviews for the business are related to the previous owners. The new owners are stand up and stand by their word. I dealt with Merlin, and he is trying to be a good business owner with follow through. I had my 29 foot RV smoged. The shared driveway with the gas station helps with the ability to maneuver my larger vehicle. I did need to get my RV re-smogged, and Merlin stood by the free re-test. I mention this because other reviews refer to previous owners charging for re-test. I was frustrated that I had to return for a re-test when the fail was related to a lack of knowledge on the tech's part, but when all was said and done, it was a good learning experience for all. read more

I must write a review for this Smog Shop. I called around looking for the least expensive option for getting my Yukon Denali Smog Tested and this place quoted me $50 with the certificate included. What a steal?? So I jumped in the car and was off to handle business!! When I showed up, I was quickly greeted by a man to begin the check in process. He quoted me $65. I communicated with him that I had called and was given a price of $50 and without batting an eye, he said "OK no problem, $50 it is". He took my DMV paperwork and gave me his paperwork to complete. While I was doing that, he hooked the Yukon up to the machine to begin the test. 10 minutes later I was all done and ready to leave with my receipt and certificate in hand. He told me that it would be quick but I was more than welcomed to have a cookie and a cold water. As usual we waited till the LAST minute to do our smog. Our usual place where we get our car checked required an appt. We called Firehouse Smog and they wanted over $60 for our standard car, and we were quoted over $80 for our SUV. I found this place on Yelp and wow glad we did. Print out the coupon online, no appt needed. It was in and out. The owner I assume is Abraham from all other reviews was very friendly on the phone. I wanted to make sure he accepted credit cards. My husband thought it was fly by night and a cash only place..... lol! It's connected to a gas station so if you blink you may not see it! Smog took 15 min. There is no waiting room (with coffee, TV like Firehouse) but I rather save the $$ thank you. No biggie to me if I am sitting on a couch or standing and I can bring my own starbucks! Beware! The coupon they advertise for $26.75 + $8 dollar certificate is NOT honored if you drive a luxury brand or a "High Performance" car. It is unclear how they define "High Performance" but hiking the price up to $55 dollars just because your car sounds loud is pretty shady. A porsche 997 911 turbo is no different than a Toyota Corolla when it comes to smog. They both are OBD2 and equipped with a catalytic converter. As long as it passes smog, it's golden. As a piece of advice, I suggest you drive off and go to the next smog shop (plenty around) and they will be more than happy and honor the discounted price regardless of which type vehicle you drive. Excellent. I got a screw in one of my new tires. I changed the tire and put on the spare. I was near this station, and I pulled right in. The manager (I hate myself for having forgotten his name) was busy... as every bay door had a car or truck inside. He stopped what he was doing to come out and greet me. He saw what was wrong... and started helping me immediately! I had my dog with me (yes, the dog in my profile picture), and he happily greeted my dog and talked to me about the breed and his own dogs. Not happy . I got a smog test in July failed due to a catalytic converter I told him I had seen his old website that said he would give free retest he stated that it wasn't on the internet any longer. I told him that it actually still was and he stated that if I would bring him proof that he would give me a free retest and my money back. Because he was confident it wasn't on the internet. I had to fix my car. I just called him back was ready to get my retest and he acted like he didn't remember who I was. I didn't expect nor did I want my money back because I believe in paying for a service but the free retest as stated. The Yelp reviews are all true. This is a wonderful place to get a smog check. They are a STAR certified station and only charged $40 for the smog test and certificate on our minivan. We had checked with Fire House Smog first, and they were asking over $60, so this was a great value. Not only that but the service was above expectation. Pleasant and quick. The gentleman also gave us tips on how to pass our next smog check, since our car is getting old. I got a groupon for a smog and I first tried to call and make an appointment like it asks, and a week later no one called, I then just went in to get a smog and didnt have my renewal notice AND THEY REFUSED TO DO IT WITHOUT THE BARCODE ON THE PAPER! A star crooks! My mother came here and was even recommended by a mechanic that worked on her 2002 Honda Accord. They quoted her $85 for a regular smog check!!!! Absolutely no issues with her car by the way. When she called me to let me know they had already taken her money before even completing the smog, and tells me they were charging her $85, I told her to ask the tech why so expensive when many other places charge $50 including your certificate! The tech then tells her it's what they always charge, not according to some reviews. He then tells her he can do it for $75, still way overpriced!! I work for a dealership and we pay $35 including the certificate, I understand dealer pricing is different but how are you gonna rip people off like that!? His final price was $65 after multiple attempts to get a justification of the insane price. Never coming here again or recommend anyone to come here. I rarely leave reviews but I was amazed by the level of customer service here! I called at 3:00pm yesterday to see if he could squeeze me in for a smog check, he said sure and to come by whenever. I arrived around 4:00pm. There was a car pulling up in front of me as well for a smog. He immediately came up to my window and showed me where to park, he said he would run the smog on the car in front of me and then I would be next. Seriously, I was in and out in about 7 minutes total! Also, my car should have cost $77 + certificate fee's but I mentioned I found him on yelp and my total was $38! My car now requires an annual smog, so I will be coming here for now on. read more
