I just got checked into our hotel with my crew and we wanted some dinner. With five different people's tastes to consider, I know just the place. I know my crew well by now. It's a Chinese buffet. I found A-Star buffet on my Yelp and got here using my GPS. It's not just off the freeway, so we had to go in town a little ways. It's located on East Kings Canyon Road by a big Asian supermarket. This place looks like one of the bigger buffets with a bigger selection of foods including sushi and all the Chinese food and a Mongolian grill thingy. They even have American food id you really don't want Chinese, like onion rings, chicken wing and French fries. I think there was pizza too. We get seated and we all know the drill, just go up and get food. Plates are available and the server takes our drink orders. I saw some more "authentic" foods out, even chicken feet, as well as the normal American Chinese stuff, like chow mein, veggies and all the different deep fried meat candy stuff. Seafood was out like snow crab, oysters and mussels. I skipped the sushi, but it actually looked better than most buffet sushi. It's fine for what it is. Don't expect a fine dining experience. I was a bit surprised by the pricing this time, which was $30 per person. I remember when they were much more affordable than their competitors, though a soda is now included in the price. The establishment is kept clean, but the food quality remains hit or miss. I usually stick to the crawfish and crab legs to get the most value. Just a heads-up: they can take a while to refill the crab legs, and they disappear quickly, so you have to be fast. The crab rangoons, pot stickers, and sushi are all perfectly fine. However, I would recommend avoiding the cakes and cookies as they tasted stale; that said, the egg tarts are phenomenal. I haven't tried the Mexican offerings, like the tacos or menudo, as they weren't very appealing visually. Overall, I would say give it try if you enjoy seafood. read more

The price was too much for a buffet I feel. Three of us for over $88. That's too much almost 30$ a person for lunch. The food was alright. The broccoli beef was ice cold, the chow mien was slimy, the sushi was being made fresh that was good. Hot and sour soup tasted strange and the cake was very dry. Husband said the crawfish was tasty but I don't eat those so I'm taking his word on it. My daughter had the chow mien that they cook in front of you and that tasted good. They were cleaning out the pond thing they have while we were eating kinda grossed me out with the smell. It was a nice try I always say to try it at least one time so you know if it's gonna be that spot you visit regularly. People were kind and kept cleaning up which is very thoughtful. Came here late on Thanksgiving day, since it is a holiday and given the timing there wasn't a whole lot of people, and plenty of seating to go around. Upon walking in, I liked the koi pond/fountain, which I thought was really cool and actually had koi fish in it! As for the food, I understand it was late and a holiday, but I noticed some foods throughout the night were getting put together with similar foods, which made the presentation look messy. (Ex: the rolls of sushi were put redistributed to only a few display plates, mussels were switched to a much smaller tray and piled up versus neatly placed, etc.) As for the food itself, besides the spring roll was stale and the bun was dried out in some spots, it was good, and given it was late I might not have the most accurate experience of how the food tasted. (Might be better when it's busy and earlier in the day) Pricing was good $29 per person for cash and $30 on card. (tax, tip, and everything included) However, when we paid we didn't realize until mid eating and chatting with friends for paid themselves that they had charged us for $30 per person (there was 4 in our party) even though we paid with cash. It's been many years since I've been here and I found myself craving an Asian buffet for lunch. This one is like many others, pretty typical pan-asian fare with a smattering of things that seem out of place, like beef tacos. Nobody eats those. It was about $20 with a drink, which is pretty reasonable. No items really stood out as great, but there were definitely items to skip, like the beef ribs with minimal meat and no flavor, and the soups that somehow needed salt. We told the lady that we're out of town and we didn't know that we had to pay first. Plus, there was nobody at the front desk and no sign (as we speak we turn to the front desk and nobody was there til a few minute we see a lady walking to the front desk) There was a line to pay. She could've taken us to the front line to pay. Instead, she say oh the line is short."" Ya could wait. My group we didn't want to make a fuss about it but we just thought that was very awful. They have a variety of food. It was packed. When they bring out a dish such as their steak, seafood, oyster, and crawfish. The moment they put down the food tray, people fight for them. So you have to literally wait near the food that you want til they bring it out. Otherwise, you won't get any at all. I even encounter in line waiting for the oyster to grab some. This person was standing on the side. When they bring out the oyster, they grab the Tong. So I was waiting to be my turn and omgosh all the people that was behind me they just didn't care anymore and grab it by their hand instead. I only got 2. That's was krazy rude. I think if it was an encounter with a different race, there would have been a problem already. They literally only have 1 waiter on the floor for 1 side. It's krazy on a Friday night. This was one of those last-minute decisions, and where to eat. And it actually turned out to be a pretty good decision as the food selection and variety. Here was very bountiful. There was a little bit of everything from Mongolian noodle style, to Sushi, to suites And savory. There are multiple rooms for dining a very populated restaurant. Per person if I recall it was around $25 $28 per adult and kids are around half of that price. And we went on a Sunday afternoon made about four visits up to the Buffay, so we definitely insured to get the moneys worth. They have a small sushi section, a chef who takes teppanyaki order, a variety of seafood and Asian dishes, plenty of desserts and appetizers, and basically plenty to choose from. Crab legs are very popular and the tray empties quickly but they are constantly restocking. We had fresh food throughput our time during weekend lunch hour. Rice crispy treats. Service was attentive. The Bad 3/5 Crinkle-cut fries were overcooked. Pork kalbi style was cold and dry. Teriyaki chicken was cold and dry. The ugly 2/5 Their fried rice had this off taste; it was horrible. The steak was fatty, dry, and tough. sushi selections Orange chicken had this off-putting, undercooked taste. Most of their food was not hot at all; it seems like they were sitting there for awhile. I advise you to eat your ramen noodles or frozen burritos at home; it's so much better. First I saw the Salmon sashimi in a pale and I pick some and it looks slimy so I smell it and it didn't smell fishy so I ate some, I came and ask for more hoping the cut some fresh one but the cook pull out from the freezer and place these frozen cut salmon pieces on to the same display dish.. yuck I almost threw up, I came home and was doing the runs .. beside the salmon all the dishes are cold , was not enjoyable. Went on a Saturday at 1130. There was a lot of people however so many serving stations. It was not crowded went through all the typical Chinese buffet, seafood meats, noodles, vegetables, sushi, and then saw the chef grilling steaks. The steaks were incredible and then they had a noodle station where you could make your own concoction of noodles, vegetables meat, and he would fry them for you and they were incredible too. Depending on what cuisine you decide to get at the restaurant will determine taste, texture, and quality of the dish. I selected a variety of different dishes and tested it out. I found the seafood had a texture and taste similar to frozen products purchased at supermarkets. You know that texture salmon that seems to dry out and loses flavor compared to fresh ones? It seems you'll find that with some seafood dishes but not all of them. Nevertheless, we did have some dishes that seemed to be cooked well and cleaned well like the mussels and other shellfish. Overall, the cooking and the preparing of dishes was well-made along with the other dishes. I will admit that I didn't try the Mongolian barbecue, salad bar, and desserts because it was your standard offerings. Overall, the normal Chinese Buffet vibes of statues, classic artwork, and music gave me a nostalgic feeling. The reasoning for the rating of three out five was because the pricing per person. After 1st round we would like to give 4.5 stars on food if we had chance to try oysters and crab legs. No crabs legs were served but oysters were gone with the wind once they were out. People in the Central Valley. No need to drive to Las Vegas for a true experience of a Chinese Buffet. My first impression was a little unfair, $17 and a few pennies for a single person. I came here with friends about a month ago during our trip to Fresno for an event. Having never been to Fresno, we began looking for places to go for dinner. We call A-Star to ask for their price per person, and right off the bat, we were greeted by a very friendly gentleman on the other side of the phone. It's already late and they were about to close in an hour or so. Rather than try to discourage us from dining, he welcomed us to the restaurant as if he were welcoming us into his home. Big shout out to Aaron! He is an example of the many types of people we need more of in the world. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant was decent. As mentioned above, it was close to closing time and things can get hectic when it comes to clearing down from the workers' point of view. I will say that the staff was very quick to clean any spillage on the counters, and did not let any plates accumulate and form plate towers on any of their guests' tables. Roughly $25 per person, which is what I would usually pay for buffet back home. A-Star is definitely your average Asian style buffet with several authentic dishes. Mostly Asian cuisine with a few American options seen here & there. The latter coming in handy if you have kids and are still picky - we've all been there haha. All of my plates looked like the world - I just had to get a little bit of almost everything. There was even ice cream available too. No, not your typical soft serve machine like you're used to seeing in a buffet style setting. This was the real deal, scooped ice cream. Overall, it was a good experience dining here at A-Star. Surely an establishment favored by locals. Despite many other restaurants in Fresno, I would give this place another visit should I ever be in the area again.
