Haddock, chips.
Darren R.

Used to be great, now not so much. The batter is dense, thick and chewy - the exact opposite of what you want a fish supper to be. Chips and coleslaw were nice, but that's not why you come here. Disappointing

Cod (softer fish) so good! Must order!

One of the best fried fish I've ever had for fish and chips! MUST ORDER COD!!! I really enjoyed the Cod which is more of the softer slider vs the haddock (firmer). I get sick of fried food easily so 4 oz is good for me. Tartar sauce is sooo good! It comes with the fish. You have to order the chips separately but nothing extraordinary. The individual fry size is a bit on the larger side and I prefer thin fries.

Cuisine: 2 Service: 6 Decor: 4 Value: 5 Overall: 3 I've been coming here for decades. Due to healthier eating, I probably only visit once a year at best nowadays. Over the weekend, I stopped by while in the neighborhood to grab a snack with my family. Walking into the dimly lit restaurant, you get hit in the face with fumes of oil infested air. I'm use to that, so didn't bother me much. However, what came next was a shocker. We ordered one piece of Fried Haddock ($16) and another piece of Fried Cod ($17). I don't know what happened, but it feels like they have completely forgotten how to fry fish. We started with the Haddock, and it was bland as can be. The batter and fish had no taste of salt. It was also not very crispy and flimsy when you pick it up. Is this the same quality of fried fish I have had for decades? I certainly do not believe so. Moving onto the Fried Cod, we found the same problems. The fish itself was more tender due to the difference in variety of fish, but a total lack of seasoning and a barely crispy batter made it only semi-edible. This is my usual order, so more than a little disappointed is how I would describe my feelings. What's up? I'm so lost. Btw, the tartar sauce was always watery and never been very good. Yet, they still charge extra for each additional one you request. Skip it and use the malt vinegar and salt. I never thought A Salt & Battery had the best fish & chips, but it was always decent. Compared to the amazing Fried Cod (Friday special) I had at Butcher Block just a few weeks ago for half the price, this was a major letdown. Read my review of Butcher Block if you care to see the difference. I hate to say that I will never be back again. It's like saying goodbye to a longtime girlfriend after one bad argument. However, she has a lot to prove the next time we meet. Till then, I'll need some space.

Not a bad spot! Was recommended by a buddy to come here for some fish & chips! It's a rather smaller spot with a few stools for order and dine-in. My UK buddy who came with us recommended we tried his favorite mushy peas and canned beans. Definitely interesting take. The fish and chips were decent, nothing extraordinarily special about it in my opinion. Pricewise was a bit more than I'd expected to pay, but nevertheless not too bad.

Haddock

Great place. Been around forever. Haddock tastes like Cod but smaller chunks/flakes and slightly less mild. Sole is a flat fish, so small flakes, more condensed, meatier and more fish flavor. Even then, they were both very similar. Not sure what whiting would taste like. Very nice staff. Ginger glasses dude. The fish looked and tasted great. Price isn't bad. Their tartar sauce is good.

went on good friday and it was not surprisingly packed! got haddock and chips and a side of curry sauce. quick service and hit the spot. curry sauce was insanely good, just like a chippy in ireland. satisfied!!!

Nice surprise as I was driving on Greenwich toward 8th. Had the haddock and chips, small, nice portion. Super fresh, super tasty with vinegar & very tasty sauce.

Great customer service

Best fish and chips in nyc. Great customer service and big portion. Will be back for sure. Lunch special is a big portion

Superb fish and chips. Been chasing the dragon of those I'd get when in London at Gigs. Best time I've had. Cool spot and friendly service.

Ask the Community - A Salt & Battery

Is there still a shop next door where one can get British products?

Yes there's a small shop where you can buy Brits products and next door to that is the Tea and Sympathy restaurant serving British food.

Is the fish and chips beer battered?

We do not use beer batter! And in regards to the below response, the temperature of the oil removes any existing alcohol from beer batter. And we do not have minors working. Hope this helps!

Can you make a reservation?

I couldn't find an answer for this. Anyone know?

When do you serve scones?

They make them every morning and they are really good.

When was this restaurant established?

Hello. We opened A Salt & Battery in October 1999, having worked for almost a year to get the batter and potatoes just right.

Is this a cafe style restaurant, or sit down with a waiter/waitress?

You order at the counter and there is limited seating.

Does the fried fish have any dairy (milk or butter) in it?

No

Wifey picked up some Gordon Ramsay Fish and Chips for us to try recently and I finally got the…read morechance to give it a proper go. Here are my honest thoughts. The wings were decent. Nothing that knocked me off my feet but solid enough for what they are. The french fries were exactly what you would expect. Potatoes are potatoes and it is genuinely hard to go wrong there. Now the fish, which is really the entire point of visiting a place called Fish and Chips, was unfortunately a letdown. Zero flavor. Completely bland from start to finish. There are several sauces included and I suppose if you enjoy building all of your flavor through dipping that approach could work for you, but personally I would much rather the fish itself show up with something to say. The surprise standout of the whole meal were the dirty potatoes. Those were loaded up nicely and genuinely delivered. I would order those again without any hesitation. But the fish is what I came for and the fish is where Gordon Ramsay Fish and Chips fell short. Given the name attached to this concept, the expectations walking in are naturally going to be elevated. Unfortunately the fish did not come close to meeting them. For a restaurant built entirely around fish and chips as its signature offering, the main attraction needs to bring a lot more to the plate than this.

Small portions for the prices. I'm talking like 5 pieces of shrimp for the shrimp and chips, but…read moreotherwise the quality of the fish and shrimp was pretty good. They were really hot when they arrived so they were freshly fried. Batter has a nice crispy texture. The sauces were okay. I got the Gordon Tar Tar and the Dijon Mayonnaise and they didn't really stand out with the flavors. Honestly, I couldn't taste much of a difference between the two. Food came out pretty fast which makes this a convenient stop to eat at before or after watching a show.

Dickerson was a great waiter -- attentive, friendly, and gave us space to enjoy everything without hovering. Every single dish hit. The food came out flavorful, well-seasoned, and honestly just felt worth the price point. The Caesar salad was fresh with the perfect amount of parmesan, the wings were sticky and packed with flavor, and those loaded potatoes? Dangerous . The pork was tender, juicy, and paired perfectly with the sauces and sides. Even the broccoli was seasoned well, which says a lot. The drinks were smooth, the ambiance was dim and cozy, and overall it felt like a great spot for a date night, catching up with friends, or even a cute celebratory dinner. Definitely a spot I'd return to. 4.5/5.
