Tucked behind a Mobil gas station inside of its convenient store is this delightful little joint that serves up some great burgers. My go to is The Big Smack. It is a hefty double beef patty smash burger with American cheese. The beef is seared well with a ton of juiciness. What does it for me is the thinly sliced onions and shredded lettuce, which cuts through the grease. Not to mention the soft pillowy sesame seed bun and the tasty Smack Sauce that ties it all together. Wait! Don't forget that it's only $9.99 instead of the usual $13-18 for something comparable at similar competitors around NYC. Another good burger is The Oklahoma. Instead of thinly sliced grilled onions, this one has caramelized onions, which adds a touch of sweetness and umami to the product. Horsey Sauce has a slight kick from the horseradish and certainly distinguishes itself from the others. With that said, I miss the sesame seed bun and lettuce from The Big Smack. This burger feels slightly greasier as well. All in all, this place is super legit. For under $10, you get one of the best double patty smash burgers I have tried in NYC. Btw, service is quick and there is some outdoor seating available. If you prefer to eat it in a nicer setting, take it to Jackson Square across the street. Trust me, this is a hidden gem. read more

I was in the neighborhood and figured I might as well check it out (since I remembered hearing so much about it when it opened). It's connected to the Mobil station, and it's a pretty small menu of items to choose from (burgers, fries and milkshakes) . I ordered the Mr. Impossible burger (made with impossible meat) and it was delicious. It came loaded with pickles, onions, lettuce and a yummy sauce. They have a tiny bit of seating outside (both tables and a little outdoor patio set). The service was pretty good and I got my food quickly. Smacking Burger should be nestled right in the absolute top left corner of one of those New York magazine grids--I can't think of a more "lowbrow brilliant" concept than a smash burger spot cropping up inside of a gas station smack dab in the middle of the west village. This place is getting some massive buzz, and I would say it is largely well deserved. I love me a good smash burger, and this place delivers a quality option. Perhaps a tiny bit over salted, and I would say their secret sauce is solid but not amazing. But the burger itself is juicy and messy and fun. Fries were a bit lighter cooked than I'd like but ok, but the shake was surprisingly strong. But here you get not only a tasty burger, but the frisson of sitting outside of a gas station in a searing area, watching the pretty people prance on to their west village outings while cars pulled in for what seemed like some seriously overpriced gas. I found the combination of some of the best of the city experience with a suburban eating outside the gas station vibe to be an utter, odd delight, with a burger living up to its buzz. Service was reasonably quick on a crowded evening, and if you want a soda or beer to go with your burger, just pivot to that. I've been going to Smacking Burger since it opened in 2024 and have never had a bad experience. It's a perfect way to end a late night (or a place to get an amazing burger, anytime). All the ingredients taste so fresh and their sauces, toppings, and burger patties are perfectly placed to make each ingredient shine. Placement matters on a burger! Gas stations are rare in Manhattan and ones that serve burgers even rarer, so I had to try it. I ordered the big smack with a side of fries. They have several interesting sauces for a small upcharge, so I asked the cashier what sauces he likes for the fries- Cilapeno and the el toro sauces. Price is comparable to what you'd pay for McDonalds in NYC, but this is way better. The fries were rough cut style, came out hot, and were properly seasoned. The el toro sauce was good with them but I really liked the Cilapeno. (Mostly cilantro and very little spicy heat) The big smack smash patty with everything on it was also tasty. There are a couple picnic tables next to the gas pumps if you want to eat there. A welcome addition to the neighborhood especially for late night bites, though I'm not sure I would say it's better than 7th St Burger. Here are the ways in which it differs: sesame bun, less overtly greasy, the butter pickles shine more and give you a sweet, tangy, sourness. Less cheesy, and meatier patties. It doesn't melt in your mouth like 7th St Burger does and perhaps you might like that. But I think I prefer cheesier, saucier and greasier. Lettuce was ok. They do have fries that I didn't get to try and a variety of burgers on the menu so I may return. But overall, I would say 6.5/10 enjoyment for me -- that being said, if you're looking for a yummy burger late at night this is a good option.
