Leonard's is the king of pastry trucks. There isn't a place I can think of that comes close. They're very specialized in making malasadas. They serve the regular sugar coated kind, the cinnamin coated, the chocolate creme filled and the vanilla/banana creme filled. Everytime I pass by I usually buy one or two. If I buy more, I'll usually eat them at all the same time. There's something about how they taste when they're fresh and warm versus left out for a few hours. Some people can heat them up, but I can't. I prefer them fresh, right from the hand of the person serving them. They accept card, but it's better to use cash. read more

I've been told by numerous people that I needed to try these malasadas before I leave the island. I was driving down the road and saw the mobile truck and made a uturn to get here. So I was happy to see that you can order single ones as I really didn't need 1/2 a dozen and there is a variety to choose from. I picked the cinnamon and the li hing and waited for a few moments for my items to be done. After a short wait my items were ready and the came out piping hot. I initially planned on taking them home to eat but I don't think I made it out of the parking lot well before I devoured the first one (in between bites I oooh ahhhed as I did say they came out piping hot!). I was told that I should have gotten chocolate cream or any creme one but I'll save that for next time. I highly recommend you atleast try them . . . You won't regret it! read more

I usually never give a five-star review, but these donuts were the best that I have ever had. This is coming from someone who does not have a sweet tooth and has had donuts in major cities like Atlanta, New York, Baltimore, San Francisco, Chicago, and LA. At first I was hesitant as this was their mobile wagon and not actual bakery/cafe. However, these were amazingly fresh. We tried several flavors: original, custard, coconut, lilikoi, and li hing mui (preserved plum). PROS: - piping hot - large quantity for a donut, way bigger than any of your typical cake or yeast ones - not too sweet but just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth - goes perfect with coffee or tea CONS: - not for a clean eater: eat it on the street and not in your car because it will get everywhere I highly recommend this. We picked up a couple of these after we went sunrise snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and it was the perfect breakfast snack after a brisk morning activity. Definitely would recommend. These were SO good and so deserving of the hype. Location makes them a perfect snack after the Koko head crater hike! A pro tip is going to the Leonard's truck instead of the main location (which has lines as soon as they open). The wait here was only 10 min and the malasadas were fire. Super convenient, loads of parking and fresh malasadas! How could you go wrong? (Other than me being on a low carb diet lol) Leonard's Malasada's are one of the few things that you'll see in a advertising picture that looks exactly the same in person. Who doesn't love malasadas?! To make it better they offer mobile locations if you can't make it to Kapahulu. I tried calling placing a phone order before arriving but no answer. It was okay tho because when I pulled up there was no line. I ordered 2 boxes of 18 pcs. I had my infant with me and a polite Samaritan offered to carry the large order but the staff was nice enough to walk me and baby back to the car. I didn't expect that but was very appreciative of gestures like that especially since I'm a new mom. If I could I would've gave 10 stars just because of that awesome customer service. So good we went twice in 2 days. We got original , cinnamon sugar & coconut-filled. Original was my fave, my s/o preferred cinnamon. Coconut was delicious & not too sweet but I couldn't eat much - it's dense! We ordered 3 between the 2 of us just to try & it was too much - if we had planned better I would have asked for a box so that we could have saved more for the week. Impromptu stop here after a hike for some malasadas! Tried the chocolate filled and coconut filled! Both tastes super soft, hot, and delicious. I actually visited another mobile in Waipahu. Nothing like a malasada made fresh while your waiting and oh that smell of the malasada cooking ... Talk about anticipation! I'm old school so I just order the original. I took mine home and brewed a cup of coffee - toasted coconut flavor. That first bite was amazing! Pillowy soft but a slight crisp. Yeasty with a slight chewiness. Plain and simple, very crispy and just the right amount of sugar. Don't hate but I think Krispy Kreme glaze is too sweet. This is the second time we've stopped by the Leonard's mobile truck and the malasadas were noticeably darker than the usual batch we get from the original location in Honolulu. It had a burnt taste to it. I know the line is super long at the original location but the taste of the malasadas is noticeably different and extremely good! This is based on yesterday's purchase. Every one in the box was clearly not fresh. They weren't the puffy and gooey malasadas we always get. Instead, they all had a horrible, bitter taste, the inside was tough and you could tell they were made prior and then refried. We ended up throwing the whole box away. Visited the Leonard's Malasadas truck in Waikele to fulfill a craving and I wasn't disappointed at all. Apparently I went at a good time, 330pm, because there were only two people ahead of me so I didn't have to wait long. Once it was my turn, I placed my order of 3 original. The worker looked at me and smiled and proceeded to make my order. The lady at the register told me it was $4.71. I asked if they did military discount to which she said yes and modified my bill. Either way I was going to give them $5 and have them keep the change. I then took my order and walked back to my car. But upon walking back I thought the box felt a little heavy, and upon looking I found that he had given me 6 instead. It was definitely a very pleasant surprise. I've been there many times and was never disappointed, but this was the first time I was gifted a little extra. Alll in all, Leonard's Malasadas in Waikele is always consistently great and is a must for anyone visiting the island for the first time, or anyone with a sweet tooth craving. The only downside is that sometimes you may encounter a little line, but that's always expected when you're purchasing something exceptional. This is right on my route while I'm going home from zumba. I stopped by to pick up some malasadas to take to a party I was attending later. There are three choices of outer flavoring on the malasadas: plain sugar, cinnamon sugar, and li hing mui. On this particular day, they only had three flavors of filling, the custard, haupia, and dobash. What can I say? I got every kind they had, and I don't regret it! The plain one was delicious as usual but the chocolate, haupia and cinnamon were excellent! We also tried the lihing mui which was not to our liking.
