Leonards is an institution on the Island and the truck in Waikele Shopping center is great. Friendly efficient service as they pump out the fresh and HOT malasadas you crave. I recommend if you have never tried to get a traditional one and ALSO try one with a filling. My favorite is the coconut. The filling is not super sweet as the bread/sugar has that part covered. There's numerous lunch wagons after Petco & Leonards is between Laverne's & Mountain Shave Ice. You can order original sugar, cinnamon or li hing mui (local fave) for $2.20/ea. Or $2.70/ea if you want it filled w/haupia, custard or dobash (Kapahulu has more options). It's a better deal to buy 6, 12, 18 or 24 pieces. There is a wait since they make it fresh. Yelp Honolulu Community Manager shared that she only likes the non filling plain ones and honestly, she was spot on... that simple one with sugar was amazing letting the fried dough shine. Hot, but not piping, it was so delicious. My friend shared that usually they're so hot, you need to wait a few minutes, but that wasn't the case this time around for those maybe planning on traveling with them. The chocolate filled one was fine, but it was like a thick chocolate gelatinous goo oozing out, which honestly was too much. There was a small line and the bit of a wait to receive my malasadas but it was worth the drive, the entire trip, to taste these amazing pastries. They are served hot and fresh! We learned that malasadas are Portuguese fried donuts and I don't think I've ever had a donut I don't like. Leonard's mobile wagon malasadas were fresh and hot. As much as I like to go to the store I went to growing up in Kapahulu, the mobile "food truck" style still does a great job. I know there is one in Waikele and one in Koko Marina shopping center. These things are served hot and first bite is amazing. This location doesn't have all the filling flavors, I don't think. I know for sure this one doesn't have guava and I've seen other locations have guava. We came to this location two different times. The filled ones are great, but the ones without filling are delicious up until you get to the middle of them. The middle is kinda raw in our opinion, very doughy. This is the Leonard's truck in Waikele, right by Petco. The line here is always long. I waited 20 minutes. It might be because people leave this place with boxes. Those people in line probably thought that there was something wrong with me because I only ordered three, two with haupia filling and one cinnamon. When eaten hot it definitely hits the spot. The haupia filling ones are my fave. The haupia filling is sooooo good. I love that their malasadas are made to order, so it's always fresh. Hot malasadas sold conveniently on a truck. I had the cinnamon sugar malasada and it was really dough-y and dry. The malasada puffs were much better because of the cream stuffing inside. Also I think that even if you order three of these things, it should come in a box instead of a bag. When I tried the malasada puffs, I was admittedly disappointed. They did not live up to the tremendous hype. The custard and haupia ones were okay. The flavor was kind of mild overall. But the chocolate one was most disappointing.
