The red & white striped lunch wagon is iconic to see from the freeway & gets all my kids excited & asking if we can stop. There's numerous lunch wagons after Petco & Leonards is between Laverne's & Mountain Shave Ice. You can order original sugar, cinnamon or li hing mui (local fave) for $2.20/ea. Or $2.70/ea if you want it filled w/haupia, custard or dobash (Kapahulu has more options). It's a better deal to buy 6, 12, 18 or 24 pieces. There is a wait since they make it fresh. We got 18 - 4 of each flavor (li hing mui, cinnamon sugar, regular), but I also wanted a stuffed one so I got the haupia. It was so disappointing...it did not hit the spot. There was no taste at all for any of em! Even the haupia had no taste. I think it was probably just a one time thing because usually when we get from this truck everything is good as always. But unfortunately, this time I feel like I wasted money getting a dozen -n- a half malasadas because we didn't even end up eating most of it. Yelp Honolulu Community Manager shared that she only likes the non filling plain ones and honestly, she was spot on... that simple one with sugar was amazing letting the fried dough shine. Hot, but not piping, it was so delicious. My friend shared that usually they're so hot, you need to wait a few minutes, but that wasn't the case this time around for those maybe planning on traveling with them. The chocolate filled one was fine, but it was like a thick chocolate gelatinous goo oozing out, which honestly was too much. What a delightful treat after hiking Koko Crater! We'd heard about Leonard's Bakery from multiple people, along with the long lines, so finding this little Leonard's mobile wagon was a delightful surprise. These things are served hot and first bite is amazing. This location doesn't have all the filling flavors, I don't think. I know for sure this one doesn't have guava and I've seen other locations have guava. We came to this location two different times. There was a short line and in less than 10 mins we had a box full of deliciousness. The prices were pretty equivalent to donuts, but these were amazing. They were crunchy, warm and very filling. Also I think that even if you order three of these things, it should come in a box instead of a bag. When I tried the malasada puffs, I was admittedly disappointed. They did not live up to the tremendous hype. The custard and haupia ones were okay. The flavor was kind of mild overall. But the chocolate one was most disappointing. Came here around 4 on a thursday. Its in the corner of the parking lot by walgreens and other stuff. The line was pretty long but only because of some tour bus came before us but it went through quickly. We got the li hing, dobash, and 2 custards. The dude who takes ur order just packs it for u right there so its quick. The lihing is honestly really good, even though it doesnt have filling inside i really liked the flavor of the sweet/sour sugar thing they coated it with. The dobang was mid, choc filling was normal, the custard was pretty good, fillung reminded me of the cream inside boston creams lol. All the malasadas were still warm even after a while which was great. Overall honestly really good, price is really good for them and its so worth it and delicious.
