I had a tantalizing dining experience New Years Day at A Fish Called Avalon. The weather cooperated & allowed me to dine outside and enjoy the incredible live musical entertainment. My entire meal was delicious but my favorite was the Macadamia-Crusted Snapper with Spinach Risotto, which came highly recommended by Matthew who was attentive & knowledgeable and provided excellent service the entire evening. This place was recommended to us by a friend and my god we were so happy we came. The hostesses were so accommodating. When we sat down the server Kristine the server was very knowledgeable from the menu, cocktails and wine. We started with escargot, then we had the chilled lobster & oysters on the half shell. Lobster was cooked perfect. We then hade the chopped salad yum. Then we had the sea bass with dumplings, it melted in your mouth. For dessert we had the cheesecake and the key lime pie so good. The kicker was I forgot my credit card and the server gave us a call and said we left our card. Food could be fantastic but if the service is not there why go back. My friend and I knew we wanted to have a fancy dinner on Ocean Drive when visiting Miami. I love seafood and my friend Art Deco architecture, so A Fish Called Avalon was right up our alley. We were able to make a late dinner reservation through Open Table and appreciated the restaurant honoring our request to sit outside (people watching on Ocean drive is amazing). The ambiance outside was great. The Avalon has a cool vintage car parked outside and fun green neon lights. The restaurant had a musician playing guitar and singing Latin-Caribbean music and current hits (I'd say he was much better at the local music). The meal began with fresh bread and butter as well as some kind of dip that neither of us could easily identify (but it had a nice garlicky flavor). My friend ordered a cocktail and I got a glass of white wine. Alcohol prices were high but actually a little more reasonable than other places we had visited in Miami, which was a welcomed surprise. For my entree, I got the Chilean Sea Bass. It was cooked perfectly. The tamari broth had a great Unami flavor and enhanced the Swiss chard, shiitake mushrooms, and dumplings in the dish. My friend got the Citrus Chicken. It came with truffled sweet potato mash and Asian green beans Her dish was huge. She let me try a bite with all the components and I thought it was pretty tasty. My favorite part was the Gorgonzola beurre blanc on the chicken. Food prices were high (with our entrees costing $28 and $42), but we expected that for an Ocean Drive restaurant. The restaurant was quite busy, so service from our waiter could be a little slow at times. However, this was ok as we were enjoying the people watching. He did take the time to take our picture (and retake when we didn't like the first attempt), which we appreciated. All in all, I would recommend here for someone looking for a nice dinner in South Beach. read more

This restaurant is attached to the Avalon hotel on Ocean Dr along with an endless line of sidewalk cafes...but that's where the similarities end...this was a legit white table cloth dining experience with spectacular seafood We started out with an excellent beet&Apple salad and Crab cake...Both very high quality and expertly plated. As you would hope in a place like this....no fillers in the crab cake...delicious! I really loved the ambience and the service, this restaurant is right across the south beach in the ocean drive. I ordered Bang bang shrimp, which is their most popular dish and the lobster tail. It's pretty solid and the location is nice. We had the scallop appetizer (very good) the chopped salad (fine) the risotto special (pretty good, large portion) and the miso chilean seabass (excellent). From what I understand, the seabass is their most popular dish so I guess it's not too surprising that it was great. Chilean seabass is one of the tastiest fish out there and as long as you don't overcook it, it'll be great. They easily cleared this bar and the miso broth and dumplings were a nice addition. We also got their key lime pie, which supposedly won some sort of award? I thought it was pretty good. Pleasingly tart. I do wish it came with less stuff on top though since the main filling and crust are so good you don't really need other stuff going on. Probably the least enjoyable part of the meal was that we were constantly fighting the flies outdoors. It'd be great if they could get some of those machines that spin and keep the flies away or something like that. read more

The season of bridal showers have begun and a group of women have descended to this place. The parking is terrible lol but once you make it to the first steps the service is pretty amazing. The food however is hot and cold. I was there early and got to try two very nice bourbon cocktails so maybe I was more relaxed with the staff. Did notice that the restaurant was much more dimly lit than I was accustomed. Cheerful waiter took everyone's drink and appetizer orders quickly and returned just as quickly to deliver. Everything was IG ready beautiful. The octopus was amazing! The sea bass was good but could do with more seasoning. Surprisingly the portion sizes are extremely big. The Macadamia Crusted Snapper with a raspberry beurre blanc and Spinach Risotto side was excellent, one of the best fish dishes I've had since... ever. The vibe, ambience, view: this is quintessential South Beach, sitting in the neon glow of the art deco Avalon hotel signage, watching the parade of people and cars steps away, feel the ocean breeze, enjoy the live music. My husband and I are foodies. I'm not gonna lie. And boy did our tastebuds leave happy from a Fish Called Avalon. Despite the bizarre name, we decided to give this place a try. It's on Ocean Drive, which if you don't know is the crazy party strip of South Beach. I mean, it was wall to wall sitting traffic, stereos blasting, sidewalks bursting spectacle that only South Beach can provide. While many fine dining experiences are calm and serene, don't expect this here. Expect GREAT food with live Latin music and the background of South Beach just an arms length away. We had excellent service from the staff. We actually ordered two entrees and had them split so we could both enjoy them... we did the lobster tails and risotto (which was to die for). Seriously it was almost too much food it was sooo good. Treat yourself to this place - but understand that you are also going to get the enjoyable craziness outside of what South Beach is. read more

What an incredible find! South beach Miami, A Fish Called Avalon. This place is right on the main drag, or as I like to call it "2 for 1 Happy Hour" row. It's a gauntlet of places trying to get you to come in to their business and drink and eat. A Fish Called Avalon however has no reason to partake in this type of Tom foolery. This is a casual yet upscale place, and the food was magnificent. I started off with the bang bang shrimp, which was a true delight. The cucumber pepper relish that accompanies the dish was also quite a treat. For the main course I had the macadamia nut crusted snapper. The dish came with a spinach risotto, both the snapper and the risotto were delicious. Packed with flavor and an extremely filling entree. The desert course, I had to try the award winning key lime pie. I mean, if something is touted as award winning, you have to try it, right? Well it was worth it, smooth and creamy and just tart enough. A Fish Called Avalon was truly a treat, just classy enough, but not over done. The decor is very contemporary and chic. Service is impeccable and the ambiance is very high end inside. We kind of missed out of dining outside due to the weather conditions. Inside it is definitely cozy for a date night or Romantic candle lit dinner. There was an acoustic guitar player that tied it all into a romantic and intimate experience. Only thing that takes away from the romantic and high end setting is the fact that guest that are checked into the hotel come in and have to go around the tables to go up the stairs into their rooms. Created confusion, you have people dining in pretty dressy business casual attire and then you have the random people walking in their beach shorts and swim suits to get to their rooms. That is truly the only thing that could have been better. -Appetizer: get the Spanish Octopus! Outstanding! -I ordered the salmon special which was amazing, very filling and delicious. -Fiancé ordered the filet mignon which was pretty good but the black peppercorn sauce was a little salty for his taste. -Dessert: Award winning peacan crusted Key Lime pie. The filling is overly sweet and that means a lot coming from someone that loves sweets. The whipped topping diluted the sweetness a bit but still they need to go Easy on the sugar, it would've allowed for better tasting of the key lime flavor. My girlfriend had made us reservations for a late birthday dinner here, but we decided to go early for happy hour to enjoy a champagne and lobster special they were having. I asked to see what champagne they were serving and when the bartender brought it out I didn't want to be rude but it was a cheap half bottle of brut and small tail for $46. So we decided to pass on that special and we asked what drinks were on the happy hour menu. It is very limited and cheap beer, cheap liquor and cheap wine. My girlfriend got a glass of wine which she returned because it was a very sweet white and she was told it was more dry. So she had to order something off the regular drink menu. I got several gin and tonics from the happy hour menu and they were very good. We really liked the atmosphere of this place but we couldn't figure out why it was so empty and all the other places beside it were filled. We assumed it was due to the prices. We decided to stay and enjoy a couple appetizers. The Mediterranean platter and the grilled octopus, which were both amazing. We also had a couple martinis as well and I had a corona. I'm far from cheap but the bill for what we got was kind of pricy, $177.80 with a tip that is included on your bill(so be aware) but I guess that is what you pay when eating at a great place with a great view. I'll come back again and get dinner the next time because the appetizers we got were quite filling. If you like a fancy place with a casual laid back chill vibe with great food, this is your place. I ordered the Florida lobster and it was way overcooked and hard to eat I am not sure if it was because it came cold to my table . The ahi tuna and the sea bass where ok nothing impressive. Just got a new job and wanted to celebrate with a nice lobster dinner. After doing some research (Yelp and Google reviews) I ended up on this spot since the reviews were solid and the menu had escargot (my favorite). I made reservations for Friday at 8pm and got there right on time and was seated. The vibe was relaxing (even though they are right on south beach) and they had a guitarist playing live. The wait staff was attentive, and the food arrived in reasonable time. We had escargot to start (the olive oil was a little sour...I like to dip my bread in it I think some of the garlic was maybe burnt) my boyfriend had the Trettole pasta, which he loved. For our main, I had the twin lobsters with a baked potato (classic), and my boyfriend had seared tuna. We also ended with key lime pie (we aren't big sweets people but I never had a key lime pie so I needed to cross it off my bucket list...was alright wouldn't phone home about it) Overall Food was pretty good, it was exactly what I was craving and it was a nice evening and a nice spot. First of all I will tell you that the food was not only beautiful but absolutely delicious. That being said, what stole the show was the service. Jose and Camilo met and exceeded anything we could have ever expected. First off I would like to say that I would try this place again. Only I would stick with the seafood options. I ordered the filet mignon cooked medium. It was overcooked. At that price point I expect that cut of meat to be cook per my request. And there was little too much sauce for my liking. If I wasn't starving I would have sent it back. The lobster was ok. A Fish Called Avalon popped up on my search and seemed just what I was looking for. Plus, they had live Cuban music this evening. From the GM and hostess who greeted me, to Vladimir my server and all the fantastic staff, they all made for a wonderful experience. The food was fantastic and just what I was looking for. This place, overall, is good - good food, good service, great location. I think why this place is so highly rated is due to the location. It's at the heart of the busy Miami Beach street. Great people watching. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Food is good. Lots of fish options. Everything was tasty. Service was quick - apps, drinks and food came out quickly. Overall, it was good. I'm just indifferent. Would I come back here? Probably not. It just felt kind of like a tourist trap and a little pricey. Nothing was GREAT.
