We visited this restaurant on Valentine's Day and were so pleasantly surprised by how incredible everything was. From the moment we arrived, the ambiance and location created the perfect atmosphere for a special evening. The food truly exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend the Miso Black Cod -- it was phenomenal and had the same rich, buttery texture as Chilean sea bass. Absolutely delicious. The Wagyu Burger was also outstanding -- freshly ground, high quality, and cooked perfectly. We also tried one of their sushi rolls topped with miso and filled with fresh tuna and salmon, and it was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. You can really taste the quality in every bite. Our server (I didn't catch her name -- an Asian woman, possibly in her 40s) was wonderful and made our experience even more enjoyable with her attentive and warm service. Our last night in Miami Beach and we landed on Española Way by chance -- Paperfish turned out to be the right call. Booked same-day on OpenTable, seated immediately on a packed Friday night. The covered terrace is stunning -- Japanese paper lanterns, string lights, tropical foliage. The Dragon Fruit Lemonade mocktails arrived orchid-garnished and vivid fuchsia. My Wahakan Old Fashioned came with a single spherical ice ball in a crystal-cut glass. Food highlights: Baby Corn in parmesan cream with paprika was the dish of the night. Crispy Truffle Fried Rice hearty and satisfying. Miso soup clean. Salmon Furai solid. Sushi enjoyable though the rice lacks the refinement of Miami's top raw bars. Vegetarians: limited options -- one Veggie Roll and uncertain tofu preparation when we asked to add it to the rice. Service warm but plates were cleared twice while we were still eating. On billing: 20% service charge added automatically, then the receipt suggests an extra 2-5% tip on top -- worth knowing upfront. OpenTable users: if you're redeeming a Dining Reward card, the staff hadn't encountered one before -- but the manager handled it graciously and honored the full amount without issue. Was craving some sushi while in town and happened upon Paperfish. I was solo but wanted to try several things so I definitely dropped a few bucks on dinner here. It was all good but I'm not sure I'd be making a beeline to return next time I'm in the area unless it's during their happy hour, which would have afforded me all the dishes I tried at a pretty hefty discount. I ordered the crispy rice tuna and crispy rice salmon and while the fish was excellent, the crispy rice was more chewy than crispy. And not just a little chewy, quite a bit chewy. Otherwise, fine. Not sure I'd order it again. I also went with the spicy tuna roll. Also good, but not particularly noteworthy for a spicy tuna roll at almost $20. Finally, i went with the crispy truffle fried rice with the wagyu beef. This was the standout! The beef was excellent. The rice was quite heavy on the truffle but if you like that, you're gonna love it. And the crispy rice was crispy in here. Giving it a really excellent texture. And the veggies were perfectly cooked and so bright and vibrant. The location is great. I sat on the patio and it was lively and fun people watching and enjoying the energy of the strip. Inside the space looked very cool, as well. Service was fine as well. Nothing particularly noteworthy but not bad at all. All in all I don't regret my meal one bit and did enjoy it. We found paper fish on our last day visiting Miami. Absolutely love the area that it is located in. Adorable closed off street with foot traffic and lots of restaurants to choose from. Outdoor mall within walking as well. We did the happy hour menu as suggested by fellow yelpers. We had to ask about it, and I got the impression that the servers were a little bit annoyed when I did. It was delicious although the portions were tiny for happy hour. We got the Shishido peppers (my fav, ordered seconds), California roll, dragon roll, edamame, crispy rice with salmon gyoza and passionfruit martini. The only thing I didn't like was the crispy rice as it was a bit chewy versus crunchy, and had a strong taste of truffle which I thought was odd. Paperfish is sooo good! We came here for our Valentine's Day dinner and I'm so glad we did! They had a specialty menu and everything was a surprise for us and it was to die for. Trying to find more casual places we like to walk to and decided to try Paperfish. When I saw that it was on Espanola Way I hesitated because it's SO touristy, but we went anyway based on the reviews. I always find the artificial cherry blossoms/flowers a red flag in restaurants and tried to ignore that - literal dust collectors. I would give 4 stars for the food but honestly - the vibe was so chaotic with the dueling blaring music outside from the other restaurants. Our server was ok - she had tables inside and outside, and she definitely needed deodorant. It was a bit shocking every time she leaned over to clear plates or pour water. The cut rolls were massive so that was unexpected. Definitely more food than we had anticipated. The hamachi was spectacular. Surprisingly the toro was not my fav and it usually is. Strongly suggest you to visit Espanola way if you get the chance. This short street becomes a pedestrian only street and all restaurants have the outside tables. With the lights and music, a bit party ground for sure. We enjoyed Sushi at Paperfish, warm Sake and lots of fun conversations. I Particularly loved the ceviche, beef tartar and scallops. Halfway through the dinner, there are several birthday celebrations. One of them, we assumed, was at the Italian restaurant a few step right across from us, wait staff and people started dancing and waving the clothed napkins with the lively joyful music. Everyone was so happy. Such a fun night for us. Another bonus is that Miami Beach is about two blocks east of this street, walked over and saw bright Orion's Belt and other stars shining right in front of you. Such a great meal. We ordered the Japanese steak, the trio of ceviches, and a can of Kikusui sake. Everything was genuinely delicious. The ceviche trio was super fresh and flavorful. Each one tasted different, and it was perfect for sharing. The steak was cooked really well with a great char. The green sauce on top made it even better. I always have a wonderful experience every time I go to Paperfish. It's nestled in vibrant Española Way. The decor makes you feel like you're really inside a Japanese izakaya with its cherry blossom trees and paper lanterns. Tucked away on Española Way we came here too celebrate my kids 15th birthday. They are a sushi lover and then wanted to do some shopping in the area so we ended up here. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I love the indoor outdoor field where you can watch people walking up and down. The servers were great bringing us food as soon as he came out of the kitchen. I loved how all of the fish dishes were super fresh. We enjoyed different rolls as well as the hand rolls. The Wagyu beef fried rice was absolutely delicious. I am from Miami so I was bit skeptical about eating at this location, in a tourist zone. The food and service was excellent. The sushi melted in the mouth, it was such great quality. Loved the otoro, the unagi, the yellow tail, honestly everything was chefs kiss. Joy our servers was so cheerful, kind, knowledgeable and attentive. Both inside outdoor seating, great fun Miami decor. The manger was also lovely she was checking on the tables and helping the staff with service. I had had Paperfish bookmarked on Yelp amongst so many other bookmarked Miami spots that I've held onto the longest time and the thought of visiting Paperfish on this visit, as I write this review, wouldn't have happened had I not been staying at an Air BnB at Casa Victoria Orchid, which happens to be on the same street as Paperfish. To say that I've been throughly impressed is an understatement - that's how good I feel about this place. The grilled baby corn was astounding - every element in the dish was so perfectly thought out, the garlic mayo had the right savory kick that was perfectly enhanced by the sweet teriyaki glaze they lightly coat the tender baby corn with before dusting a satisfying amount of grated Parmesan cheese and togarashi to complete the flavor profile. The wasabi martini should win some sort of award. If you've ever happened to dab some wasabi onto pickled ginger when eating sushi as an in between bite between sushi bites, this drink has that bold, positively brazen impact that'll delight those who aren't shy to zesty, refreshingly herbaceous smokiness. Crispy truffled rice - this dish hit all the check marks; I loved dribbling a bit of soy sauce that I had poured onto my soy sauce dish on the rice and mixing it in with the rice and tofu I requested they add onto the signature. (do NOT attempt to pour soy sauce from the soy sauce bottle that's at the table directly on anything, it has a wide opening and will turn your dish into soy sauce soup!) I also tried adding in garlic mayo from a side I asked for and mixed some of that in on a small portion of the rice that had not been mixed with added soy sauce by me and that was another level as well. The garlic mayo was so good I begged for a to-go side of it so I could dip my Cajun fries from Five Guys (located down the road on Washington Avenue) later on my trip. I also think the miso shishito peppers appetizer was one, if not the best, renditions of a Shishito dish I've had to date. There is a hint of savory sweetness that the glaze on the peppers adds, that really enhances. Be warned that one or more of the shishito peppers packs a lot of heat so be ready to be surprised if that is what happens. I'm glad I tried them but I'm also sensitive and shy to spiciness and it so happens that my last pepper was the one that packed the spiciness so it really hit. In the future, it might not be a dish I revisit just due to my constant avoidance of spicy food, but not all the peppers on a shishito platter will always be spicy, it's just a luck of the draw. I liked that their lychee martini was not syrupy sweet, which is excellent when you want to drink your dessert. I also liked the Cucuzaki cocktail (Nolet's gin, flower infused sake, elderflower, yuzu and cucumber). I asked for them to add half ounce of lemongrass. The drink was fruity, floral, balanced and refreshing. I would definitely re-do the Cucuzaki but the Wasabi martini sent me because I do enjoy intensely complex cocktails as well. My server Gene took good care of me and I appreciated how relatable and attentive she was. read more

Paperfish is one of our favorite spots to get take out sushi from in the area, although we also enjoy dinning in from time to time. The food is always amazing, however, service is a hit or miss. Whenever picking up, service is generally not the nicest, when dining in, most of the time service is nice. Some of our favorite dishes are the handroll flights, crispy salmon rice, acevichado roll and their nigiri's. This is one of the times that I wish that you didn't need to leave a star rating because I've really mixed feelings about how to address this issue. I've come to this location a few times after going to the brick location and loving the food. I was excited to learn that there's one closer to me and easier to get to. This location is definitely smaller and it's on Española Way so it can be a little chaotic outside, but the environment is pretty pleasant overall. The most recent time I was there everything food wise was absolutely delicious and upon discussing with my family, their favorite restaurants of the ones we had been to recently, a few people actually said that Paperfish was their top one. However, on our last dish, which was the Hotate Roll, my brother found a staple mid bite. This was super jarring, and none of us really knew how to react. It was not folded as if it had come out of a packet of stapled paper, but instead fully open (so not in the default "setting" either - it was one semi straight, albeit crooked, line). It came from between the rice itself and the piece of scallop on the roll. We immediately brought it to a server's attention who brought who I believe was a manager over and they apologize profusely. We were definitely all in shock and processing what had just happened. The thought of what could've happened if he had not bitten into the sushi and instead put it fully in his mouth is very scary. The staple could've ended up in his tongue, gums, cheek or even throat, and it definitely would have resulted in an emergency room visit and a lot of potential damage internally. Luckily, since this had been the last thing to come out plates-wise, so it's not that we ended up not being able to finish our meal or anything, but it definitely made everyone very uneasy. The fact that it wasn't something "gross" so to speak helps in terms of thinking of the future and what might find in food in general, but at the same time feeling unsure about taking a bite out of something and not knowing if there's something physically harmful in it is definitely upsetting. They discounted our meal and removed the role from the bill and offered us free dessert (although when we asked if we could try two, trying to lighten the mood and debating between the group which to try, they declined and said we had to choose one. We offered to pay for the other since we genuinely didn't know which to choose). The more we thought about it upon leaving and taking a second away from the chaotic atmosphere of the restaurant, the more upset we became. They assured us the chef had been notified and that they were clearing the whole kitchen to make sure nothing else was accidentally, but this was really scary and we are all still pretty shaken up. I hope they continue to take it seriously and ensure this doesn't happen to anyone again. read more

Allow me to elaborate: The quality of the food is definitely there. I was, however, a little bit surprised that the sushi roll selection was limited. Came here with the family for an early dinner before a concert. I made a reservation because I wasn't too sure if it would be busy, thankfully it wasn't and they were able to accommodate seven of us. The server was very pleasant and helpful with giving us recommendations. Thankfully, we were there just in time for happy hour. I had a passionfruit martini and my boyfriend had a lychee martini, both tasted great and we're very strong. My daughter and her friends had a blueberry lemon drop drink which they said was good. It was a little too sweet for my liking. We tried the Wagyu Gyoza and it tasted OK, a little salty. I had a spicy tuna roll, which wasn't very spicy, but it was pretty good. My daughter and her friends enjoyed the dragon roll and other roles that they got. My boyfriend ordered a Wagyu steak meal because he does not eat sushi or fish and the steak was super tender and delicious. It came with the sweet peppers which I ate because he doesn't eat vegetables and they tasted great. He got fries with it and although the fries came a little late, they were good. Even though it was happy hour we still ended up spending over $300 with tip so I can't imagine how much it would be without happy hour. Nice place, fresh sushi, and great service.
