This place is pretty rock solid. I think it's safe to say A Dong is a Vietnamese restaurant despite what the signage might lead you to believe. I've had 7 or 8 entrees and 4 or 5 appetizers, and all options have been top-notch. Oozing with flavor and always fully loaded with fresh greens and bold sauces, I always leave the table satisfied. Pardon spelling mistakes, but the pho is dynamic, the bo luc lac is generous, the goi cung has the best peanut sauce (when you add a dallop of the hot chili), and the bun bun hue rocks! It helps, I think, if you can speak the language, but if you cant, be sure and point at the vietnamese options on the menu. Also: it's a bright and clean environment. The food is hit or miss. Some of the stuff is really good. There's a soup I always get from this place that's better than anywhere else. The staff are always friendly. My biggest complaint is the cleanliness. This restaurant is absolutely filthy. The windows are smeared with handprints as well as the tables. There are crumbs and flies buzzing around. I would have given a no-star review if it would allow me to do so. My family and I have been going to this place for years. We had liked this place until one day we started notice they automatically enforced tip on our check for 18%. Tipping should be done voluntarily, isn't it? This is not right. So we went up and talked with their cashier. Unbelievably, the cashier would not listen and she put up her written sign of "we deserve the right to refuse service to anyone", and she talked Vietnamese words which sounded like she was cursing us as her customers Folks, this is rude manner if we are talking about customer service. We know that in America we do tip and everyone is willing to do it, but we are not forced to tip. The tipping system that this restaurant owner does is unacceptable. We are not going back anymore. I got the bun thit nuong and it was very good! The thit nuong (grilled pork) was very tender and the flavor was just perfect. Usually with dishes like this, they give you more of vegetables than noodles but they gave a perfect balance of both, not too much of something and not too little of something. Well unfortunately A Dong keeps slipping on the rating scale and I'm not sure I'm a stick around to hit the One Star on Jackie's Foodie Scale. I hadn't visited A Dong in over a year and after this visit it will probably be dropped off my Foodie list. I met up with a friend yesterday to cure my Vietnamese hankering and opened the door to a dirty entrance. The mess continued as I had to ask the waitress to knock food and crumbs off the seat... (Yuck).. Debating internally if we should leave, I decided to put off the crumbs and order what I had been craving... A bowl of the egg drop soup that contained lump blue crab meat and corn. For 3.95 a cup, one can dine on a scrumptious bowl of soup and in my humble opinion it's worth every penny. We browsed the menu and ordered the lunch portion of Garlic Shrimp and the Pork Vermicelli bowl. His food looked amazing but I was highly disappointed with my dry vermicelli, six small pieces of pork (well seasoned with a perfect char from the grill) and a burnt up version of some type of egg-roll. I asked for double sauce so that I could get the dry noodles to slide down my throat and had to wave the inattentive waitress over for water refills... The place was not that packed and the older manager did more walking around scanning tables then the young waitress did.. Unfortunately she talked more up front then waiting on her customers... This is the second time I've come to dine and had to nearly jump out of my seat for service.. Probably the best Viet restaurant in SA. Clean. Not-so-bad service. Good, authentic Viet dishes. Their bo luc lac dish (shaken beef or cubed steak beef) is one of the better ones I've had. Not very many can perfect this dish. The cubed steak is stir-fried (not crunchy) on the outside, and medium rare on the inside. They usually serve it with tomatoes, cucumber, onions, & lettuce over rice. I didn't get cucumbers. I was hoping they served the chicken broth that normally comes with the rice dishes, but they didn't. They only only gave me a small bowl of salt & pepper (which you would dip the beef in), but the flavor was enough you didn't need it. Besides the 2 missing items from the dish, it was DELISH! Their chicken and rice plate wasn't too bad either. Pho--you either make it like everywhere else or you screw it up. I don't remember pho here being bad so that's a good thing. Definitely not the best. The fried rice was terrible! The chicken looked really weird and the taste was just horrible. I had to order the sesame chicken which was not bad, but definitely not the best, it wasn't worth it. The egg rolls were also not good at all. It had weird stuff that didn't say it had in the menu. The restraint was clean, but the food was just no. The total came up to 57 dollars which was definitely not worth it. I'm not thinking of going back any time soon, so instead if y'all want to try good Chinese food, go to a different place! read more

The food was excellent but the customer service was absolutely terrible. I've been here twice w a friend. The first time, I hadn't left a tip because of the bad service but the server ran after me while I was already in my car and asked me to add a tip. Second time around the same server had such an attitude, did not check on our table at all, and when it came to the check he had us walk up to him to get it settled. A dong has been by go to place for pho and Vietnamese food for many years yet each time I come in I wish the floors would get a deep cleaning. The Bathroom was recently updated but I think the main dining hall need to have the floors deep cleaned. It may be my OCD but I can see food still stuck in-between the grout. The food has always been fresh, the service is ok. Our favorites are the chicken wings with fish sauce, crispy squid salad, #113 Pho, the combination special lo mein, and the wonton soup. "A Dong" simply means "Asian" in Vietnamese. So get over the name, people. What I like about A Dong is that they have quite an extensive menu with more authentic dishes than other Vietnamese restaurants in SA - such as pho ap chao and fish sauce chicken wings. Pho ap chao is wok fried rice noodles. The noodles are fried first. Then it is topped with sauteed vegetables and beef or seafood or combo of everything (your choice). The noodles start out crispy and chewy. But will soak up the gravy in the stir fry quickly. So, eat this dish immediately or it won't be good. The fish sauce chicken wings can be fantastic depending on who's in the kitchen. We've had this dish 3 different times and they've been slightly different each time. On a good day, the wings would come out crispy and lightly coated in this sweet, salty, sticky, spicy sauce. On a bad day, the wings would be soggy and overly coated. So it's hit or miss. Other things we've tried: -Spring rolls (cha gio) are tiny, but good -Shakey beef (bo luc lac) was ok -Canh Chua Ca (hot and sour catfish soup) - too sweet and too many bean sprouts (I hate bean sprouts). Would not get again. -Lotus Root Salad (goi ngo sen) with pork and shrimp was decent. The nuoc mam could have been more flavorful. -Salt and Pepper Calamari - batter was not crispy. But overall, not bad. -Summer rolls were simple and good. -Soup broths (we've tried pho and hu tieu) were too weak for our taste -Cafe Sua Da is served in that drip system contraption and not premade...nice! Pretty sure we've tried other things. Can't recall right now as this review is long overdue. So while the food isn't the best we've ever had, we appreciate that A Dong serves up quite a variety of authentic Vietnamese dishes. We always see other Vietnamese families dining here and this is our go to place when my relatives pop in unexpectedly and I don't have time to cook for the masses. The thing that really kills it for me is that this place is located in the Forum. Whoever designed the entry and exit points for the Forum (and all of SA's roads really) was on crack and has a twisted sense of humor. These roads make no sense! First time eating pho. I sampled some rich chicken pho once at Pho Bistro on Pat Booker road and found it so rich with deep fatty flavor. I also find the house chicken soup at Thai Spice and Sushi to have this same level of richness only gotten from hours of stewing the bones of chicken or beef. Pho broth is supposed to be made with beef bones, especially leg bones and is boiled for hours, until all that gelatinous goodness comes out. So, I enter Adong looking for some rich Pho. I chose number 110, which is the beef pho with mixed meats. It came with red onions, meatballs, rare, and cooked thinly sliced beef. The garnishment and herbs were cilantro, thai basil, jalapeno, bean sprouts, and hot chili paste in a lemon grass flavored beef broth. I did not find this broth to be as rich or fatty as I'd hoped and while balanced, the lemongrass was overpowering. I wouldn't go so far to call it watery, and it certainly was flavorful, but just not what I was looking for. Maybe, I will try the chicken pho next time or Bun bo hue, which is the unsung hero of Vietnamese soups. The portion sizes are huge here for only $7.50, and it is packed with rice noodles. You will get full. I've been here before and gotten the summer roll appetizer with peanut sauce. Delicious. And you can't go wrong with the fish sauce chicken wings. They have about 10 lunch specials with the standard Chinese offerings for about $7.50. read more

Love love love this place! The dishes I've tried here took me to a place I never want to venture back from! My first visit I ordered the chicken pho and ate every bit of it. My second experience was a wonderful one filled with new dishes I've never tried before. Who would think to order fried calamari at a Vietnamese establishment? This girl. The calamari is out of this world good! There are just too many wonderful things to try here. My favorites included the Bo Luc Lac, shrimp spring rolls, and lemongrass chicken. I was on my way back from the TCEA conference in Austin on Friday (2/11/2011) when the traffic got so bad that I just didn't feel like driving anymore. I pulled into a gas station, fired up YELP, and searched on Vietnamese. The closest one to come up was A Dong. I typed the adress in my GPS and headed right on over. The place itself is a nice and clean strip center restaurant. The servers are all very young. They were playing hip hop music, which was the only English I heard out of them, except when talking with me. The seemed like a family of brothers and sisters. One of the boys, about 16 or so, kept singing with the music in a high shrill adenoidish voice. He would move his hands and body as if he were the hottest hip hop performer out there. It could have been annoying, but instead, it was kind off endearing. I ordered pho with variety meat and Vietnamese eggrolls. The eggrolls were very good. There was a little more carrot in them than I am used to, but I think that may be a good thing. They serve them with a huge plate of lettuce, cucumber, and parsley, but I didn't use any of that. The pho was very nice. It reminded me of the pho at the PHO VN Bistro when it was still here. (Check my review: It is reopening!) I missed the extra meats like tendon and bible tripe, but there was plenty of sliced beef to last the bowl. I won't be going back anytime soon, only because it is so far from home. However, if I am passing through that part of town, I would love to stop and try some of the other stuff I saw other people eating. As much as I love pho, I know I must be missing something by never trying anything else. Someone needs to make an app like the sushi one, that helps people like me with a picture and written description of the dish. Wow! Everything I have had here is delicious. But what i regularly go back for and crave at least once a month is their pork vermicelli with spring roll dish. If you are craving Asian food, but don't want something too heavy, get this! The noodles with the pork and fresh raw veggies mixed in, and the sauce is to die for!
