The service was poor from the beginning. When I walked in, I told the hostess "Table for one." She said "sit anywhere." I chose a 2 person table (smallest they have) and she just tossed the menu on the table and asked what I wanted. I ordered a water and sat down. When my water arrived I was ready to order, I ordered the Sesame chicken with fried rice. My waiter brought my food out in 20 minutes (not bad wait) but I was also the 3rd party in and everyone had already received their orders. The sesame chicken portion was large. They were skimpy on the rice. This was the worse sesame chicken I've had in San Antonio. My waiter checked on me once while eating and never checked on me again, which was fine until I got full and needed a to-go box. The waiter entered the dining area once he saw people enter the restaurant. As he walked pass me I asked for a box to which he said, "please hold." I held for 20 minutes. I had to get back to work and couldn't wait any longer. Admitted, I was likely not going to eat it in the future. I got up from my table and cashed out with the hostess that sat me. Went to Kim Tran for lunch recently. We were promptly greeted and sat at a table. I ordered the tofu lemongrass lunch special and my friend got the fried rice. Lunch specials come with soup and egg roll or crabmeat Rangoon. I enjoyed my egg drop soup, but our dishes were a little bland. However, there were was an assortment of spices and sauces on the table, so i concocted a nice sauce out of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, Sriracha, and some homemade sauce they had on the table. I've been coming here for over 30 years because they have theeeeeee best Vietnamese fried spring rolls in SA. Also because I once knew the original owners. They have not changed this recipe and I'm glad about that. So crispy and filled with so much meat. The kabob is definitely cooked over an open flame, it has a nice charcoal taste and very tender. The rice is a bland mixture of turmeric and coconut, it's not flavorful or flavorless. But I want the kabob and the spring rolls, so the rice is just there for a little razzle dazzle. I still eat it though, make no mistake haha. Don't forget to grab a jasmine tea to accompany any meal. It never disappoints. I've been going here since the 90s, when it looked a little dated. Things haven't changed abit! I love the lemon grass chicken, so that's what I always get; healthy and delicious. I brought my in-laws today and they both really liked the lomein and shrimp fried rice. My husband always gets the kung pao chicken. (We really need to mix it up.. next time.) Food's always on point here, definitely gotta try it! Service was especially good today. There were a couple new people that were awesome. Been coming here for like 20 years! They have, hands down, the best chicken lemongrass with rice noodles. The chicken has great grilled flavor. Ask them to put the peanuts on the side though because sometimes they're old and they taste gross - can ruin your dish. The fried spring rolls are also the best in town and we've tried them all over town. It's time for the young male waiter to move along though. We've seen him there since he was just knee-high to a grasshopper, doing his homework after school and then helping out when he got old enough. He obviously doesn't like his job as a waiter, and last time we went, he argued with us about what table we could sit at. We were literally the only people in the place at 2 PM. Don't go. I took a chance because I really wanted some good spring rolls. The menu was actually primarily Chinese. I ordered the beef skewer with spring roll. The skewer was a thin piece of beef. Not really spiced or flavored. The rice was not good. The hot and sour soup lacked flavor. The spring roll was ok. But the sauce had zero flavor. Seriously some of the worst food I've had. I was looking for a chinese place for me and my girlfriend and after stumbling out of another place who didn't serve rangoons or eggrolls with their meals (wtf??) we decided to come to Kim Tran's. When we walked in, we took one good whiff and it smelled like a funeral home.. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day or what, but it was foul.. We looked at each other and said we'll give it a shot anyway.. We ordered a water and it tasted literally like it came out of a septic tank. We couldn't drink past one sip. It was probably the worst tap water I've ever had in my life.. My girlfriend ordered the beef and broccoli with crab rangoons and an eggdrop soup. I got the lemon chicken. She said the eggdrop soup was pretty okay so we soldiered on. Once I got my plate it already looked like a plain and bland piece of mystery meat, but I went ahead and tried it. McDonalds does a better job at making chicken. I don't even really like McDonalds!! I ate maybe 2 bites and my blood turned cold. Nope.. My girlfriend claimed that her beef and broccoli tasted like it was mixed with "grandma's ashes." Nope x2.. We called the waiter, which was actually quite nice and needed to get the hell out of there along with us. We paid for the eggdrop soup and literally lost our appetites. I've been here many times and the food was actually good, but today...the spring rolls were rubbery and tasted like they had been reheated, the fried rice was awful and looked like it was just colored with yellow food coloring, no veggies in it. I know most reviews of this place aren't great, but my family and I have been coming here for 15+ years when there location was in a different part of the shopping strip that they're currently in. The staff pretty much knows our family and has seen us grow up. As far as the food, my favorite item is probably their spring rolls. They're so crisp and tasty. I could eat a full order by myself. I also love their chicken lemongrass with rice noodles. Not my favorite place for fried rice, but anything else you order is pretty decent as far as Chinese food goes. I think they're portions are fair for the price. I'll be coming here as long as they're open and as long as I live right down the road from them! read more

My family and I have been going to Kim Tran's Vietnamese Restaurant for years. They have a very good menu that includes your standard Americanized chinese food and also excellent authentic Vietnamese cuisine. My personal favorites are the lemongrass chicken noodle bowl, crab and asparagus soup and the spring rolls. Not to be confused with summer rolls, the spring rolls at Kim Tran's are stuffed with meat (pork?), rice noodles, and carrots, fried, and served with lettuce, cilantro and fish oil. They come two per order and are cut into pieces, making them a perfect appetizer to share with the table. The crab and asparagus soup is delicious - the base is similar to egg drop soup and includes plenty of crab! A bowl of this soup and an order of spring rolls are one of my favorite "crap day" meals and always satisfy! Kim Tran has recently changed locations into a brighter storefront facing Eisenhauer Road. Open weekdays until about nine and Saturdays for lunch and dinner, this restaurant has some of the best food and service I've experienced in San Antonio. read more

Okay. I broke down tonight. I vowed to never come back after my last experience here. Truth is, I absolutely, positively, without a doubt can not live without Kim Tran's Vietnamese spring rolls. I've missed their chicken lemon grass. I've missed their jasmine tea. I've missed the robust bite of the undiluted fish sauce in which I marinate the rolls--which leaves me needing a serious breath mint afterwards. But I don't care. I've been in search of another restaurant that has comparable spring rolls, but so far, none compare. And after months of searching, I finally gave up and gave in to my craving and I.BROKE.DOWN. After savoring every last bite of my beloved spring rolls and chicken lemon grass, my overwhelming craving tonight was finally satisfied in deep fried, crispy goodness. The other Vietnamese dishes here are decent and the regular Chinese dishes are about average, but what shines here are the wonderful spring rolls. Thomas, our waiter, is always pleasant and it was rather quiet tonight with only 3 other tables occupied. Our meal was served in less than 10-15 minutes. I know typical lunch hours can get rather crazy here--but I'm sure it's because the other customers know just how wonderful the spring rolls can be. This is a small family run business, but they'd do well to hire some extra help during peak times to get customers in and out quickly. I recommend coming during off peak hours for the best dining experience. All around, tonight was a solid 4 stars. And yes... I will return... and very soon. read more

I had been going here for yrs, the service is off and on, very off when the ex-wife is there which is where the rubber meets the road and I will not be returning!! I was there on a particularly busy day, I ordered my usual Pho noodle soup with "rice noodles"!!! well upon 1st sip, I knew I had encountered Ramen noodles of the wrong kind...not rice like I had ordered. Again, it was quite busy and I couldn't get Tom the waiters attention to tell him my order was wrong, so I continued eating as I had to return to work. Well finally, when Tom brought my bill I explained to what happened, not asking for a refund or anything just informing him of the ramen noodle foil. Well he said Oh no, its rice noodles, I said Tom I know rice from ramen and this is ramen...it changes the taste of the soup! He says well its probably a different brand. Whatever, rice, ramen, egg noodles I know the difference. Here come Ex-wife, peering in the bowl, making a scene and saying "it rice noodle, I tell by the color" Well I tell by the taste!! But I pay and leave. Two weeks later I come back, order the same Pho soup with rice noodles and it was great! As I was preparing to pay and leave, one of the regular customers called me over and told me how rude and indignant they were towards me when I left the last time, talked about me badly. I can assume that behind closed kitchen doors, many things are said about customers but to be on the floor making rude remarks because an error was politely brought to their attention is totally not worth my time, $, or desire for them to remain open. They May not care about this review because they obviously don't care about good customer service, so for me I take my money and self respect to those who at least fake that they appreciate it.
