Went to Kim Tran for lunch recently. We were promptly greeted and sat at a table. I ordered the tofu lemongrass lunch special and my friend got the fried rice. Lunch specials come with soup and egg roll or crabmeat Rangoon. I enjoyed my egg drop soup, but our dishes were a little bland. However, there were was an assortment of spices and sauces on the table, so i concocted a nice sauce out of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, Sriracha, and some homemade sauce they had on the table. Portions are large, service was excellent, and the restaurant was clean. I would return to try their pho. read more

The service was poor from the beginning. When I walked in, I told the hostess "Table for one." She said "sit anywhere." I chose a 2 person table (smallest they have) and she just tossed the menu on the table and asked what I wanted. I ordered a water and sat down. When my water arrived I was ready to order, I ordered the Sesame chicken with fried rice. My waiter brought my food out in 20 minutes (not bad wait) but I was also the 3rd party in and everyone had already received their orders. The sesame chicken portion was large. They were skimpy on the rice. This was the worse sesame chicken I've had in San Antonio. My waiter checked on me once while eating and never checked on me again, which was fine until I got full and needed a to-go box. The waiter entered the dining area once he saw people enter the restaurant. As he walked pass me I asked for a box to which he said, "please hold." I held for 20 minutes. I had to get back to work and couldn't wait any longer. Admitted, I was likely not going to eat it in the future. I got up from my table and cashed out with the hostess that sat me. I didn't leave any tip as none was earned. I will never go back to this restaurant. read more

I've been coming here for over 30 years because they have theeeeeee best Vietnamese fried spring rolls in SA. Also because I once knew the original owners. They have not changed this recipe and I'm glad about that. So crispy and filled with so much meat. The kabob is definitely cooked over an open flame, it has a nice charcoal taste and very tender. The rice is a bland mixture of turmeric and coconut, it's not flavorful or flavorless. But I want the kabob and the spring rolls, so the rice is just there for a little razzle dazzle. I still eat it though, make no mistake haha. Don't forget to grab a jasmine tea to accompany any meal. It never disappoints. Went in to pick up some lunch, spring rolls. For roughly $12 these were super delicious & filling. They were crispy & crunchy. I got green lettuce, not white stem. I was able to fully enjoy them with some cilantro. Will be going back to treat the family. read more

I've been going here since the 90s, when it looked a little dated. Things haven't changed abit! I love the lemon grass chicken, so that's what I always get; healthy and delicious. I brought my in-laws today and they both really liked the lomein and shrimp fried rice. My husband always gets the kung pao chicken. (We really need to mix it up.. next time.) Food's always on point here, definitely gotta try it! Service was especially good today. There were a couple new people that were awesome. My go to place for Chinese in San Antonio. I love, love, love, their Lemon Chicken. It was the first place I drove to after checking into my hotel. Lemon chicken, fried rice and some sweet tea really hits the spot. Servers are always nice and quick. Go and see for yourself. read more

I've only ever had the Spring Rolls, and they check every box for me. A lot of flavors packed into a tight roll. The service is fast and friendly, and I find the dimly lit a great escape from the harsh TX sun at lunch time. read more

Been coming here for like 20 years! They have, hands down, the best chicken lemongrass with rice noodles. The chicken has great grilled flavor. Ask them to put the peanuts on the side though because sometimes they're old and they taste gross - can ruin your dish. The fried spring rolls are also the best in town and we've tried them all over town. It's time for the young male waiter to move along though. We've seen him there since he was just knee-high to a grasshopper, doing his homework after school and then helping out when he got old enough. He obviously doesn't like his job as a waiter, and last time we went, he argued with us about what table we could sit at. We were literally the only people in the place at 2 PM. It's a rare experience to have a server tell you to "hold on" every time a person from your table makes a request. It's also curious that the food coming from the kitchen is lukewarm when you are one of only two tables in the restaurant. Bad service, cold food, bad attitude, that's Kim Tran. read more

There's always a time and place for classic Westernized Chinese food, and this place has it. They have lots of different dishes that would appeal to all sorts of palates, so don't worry at all if you aren't adventurous. They always have kind and swift service, and it's located in a shopping center with lots of other cool options to explore. read more

Got the lemongrass chicken lunch. It stated it's spicy. This wasn't. Looks like they used the remnants of the chicken they had. I like this place, & normally their food is quite good. Maybe because it's Monday??? So, I'll not come back on Monday. Overall, a good place. Just disappointed today. read more

Kim Tran for authentic Vietnamese spring rolls - wrap in lettuce with cilantro and their nuc mam sauce is just right not too salty or sweet, and don't forget the jasmine iced tea, sooo good....ordering just those is a perfect meal. Don't go. I took a chance because I really wanted some good spring rolls. The menu was actually primarily Chinese. I ordered the beef skewer with spring roll. The skewer was a thin piece of beef. Not really spiced or flavored. The rice was not good. The hot and sour soup lacked flavor. The spring roll was ok. But the sauce had zero flavor. Seriously some of the worst food I've had. After 3 bites I left. And now my runny is a bit upset. So disappointed. read more

Food starting to decline in flavor and prsentation. Had house noodles with shrimp, beef and chicken. Lacked in salt. Had to use 1 of the sauces offered on the table. Spring rolls always on point. It's the only item I look forward to as well as the tea. read more

I was looking for a chinese place for me and my girlfriend and after stumbling out of another place who didn't serve rangoons or eggrolls with their meals (wtf??) we decided to come to Kim Tran's. When we walked in, we took one good whiff and it smelled like a funeral home.. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day or what, but it was foul.. We looked at each other and said we'll give it a shot anyway.. We ordered a water and it tasted literally like it came out of a septic tank. We couldn't drink past one sip. It was probably the worst tap water I've ever had in my life.. My girlfriend ordered the beef and broccoli with crab rangoons and an eggdrop soup. I got the lemon chicken. She said the eggdrop soup was pretty okay so we soldiered on. Once I got my plate it already looked like a plain and bland piece of mystery meat, but I went ahead and tried it. McDonalds does a better job at making chicken. I don't even really like McDonalds!! I ate maybe 2 bites and my blood turned cold. Nope.. My girlfriend claimed that her beef and broccoli tasted like it was mixed with "grandma's ashes." Nope x2.. We called the waiter, which was actually quite nice and needed to get the hell out of there along with us. We paid for the eggdrop soup and literally lost our appetites. Avoid this place like the plague, before you too, catch the plague. Edit.. I've never felt the need to actually write a review before. Thank you, Kim Tran, for literally forcing me to sign up so that I can save people from this god awful place. read more

I've been here many times and the food was actually good, but today...the spring rolls were rubbery and tasted like they had been reheated, the fried rice was awful and looked like it was just colored with yellow food coloring, no veggies in it. The quality of the food has gone down tremendously. I won't be going back. read more

We ordered take out , live about five minutes from restaurant. We ordered kung pow chicken, sesame beef, and a couple other dishes . They all had zero flavor or seasoning? Totally bland . I know most reviews of this place aren't great, but my family and I have been coming here for 15+ years when there location was in a different part of the shopping strip that they're currently in. The staff pretty much knows our family and has seen us grow up. As far as the food, my favorite item is probably their spring rolls. They're so crisp and tasty. I could eat a full order by myself. I also love their chicken lemongrass with rice noodles. Not my favorite place for fried rice, but anything else you order is pretty decent as far as Chinese food goes. I think they're portions are fair for the price. I'll be coming here as long as they're open and as long as I live right down the road from them! read more

My family and I have been going to Kim Tran's Vietnamese Restaurant for years. They have a very good menu that includes your standard Americanized chinese food and also excellent authentic Vietnamese cuisine. My personal favorites are the lemongrass chicken noodle bowl, crab and asparagus soup and the spring rolls. Not to be confused with summer rolls, the spring rolls at Kim Tran's are stuffed with meat (pork?), rice noodles, and carrots, fried, and served with lettuce, cilantro and fish oil. They come two per order and are cut into pieces, making them a perfect appetizer to share with the table. The crab and asparagus soup is delicious - the base is similar to egg drop soup and includes plenty of crab! A bowl of this soup and an order of spring rolls are one of my favorite "crap day" meals and always satisfy! Kim Tran has recently changed locations into a brighter storefront facing Eisenhauer Road. Open weekdays until about nine and Saturdays for lunch and dinner, this restaurant has some of the best food and service I've experienced in San Antonio. read more

However, my most recent encounter has soured me completely, and I think I will never return. My favorite dish here was something that did not appear on the menu, Bo Tai Chanh salad. Even though it was not listed, they would whip it up at my request. It consists of beef cappaccio on an iceberg lettuce salad with Vietnamese vegetables and a fish sauce based dressing. Tonight they refused my order. What makes this refusal all the more frustrating is that Pho Bo Tai Chanh (the soup version) is listed on the menu and promoted as one of the favorite dishes. All that was needed, to meet my request, was to cut up half a head of lettuce and throw the non-liquid ingredients of the soup on top. Every restaurant should remember the customer is always right. Their only purpose is to meet their customers' requests to the best of their ability. I understand when a kitchen cannot meet requests with the ingredients or equipment they have. For example, I always call 24 hours ahead to order Peking Duck because the traditional methods require that amount of time to prepare the dish. Or I remember being refused a request to have my meat served rare when the restaurant had already cooked all its meat to medium rare using sous vide. I don't expect the kitchen to do the impossible. But every kitchen must be ready to meet special request whether health related like peanuts, shrimp, gluten, salt, carbohydrates, etc. or relate to tastes or ethics like vegetarian, vegans, seafood, etc. To fail one's customers is the first step to being one of the numerous restaurants to fail and become irrelevant. Any restaurant that refuses to meet reasonable requests fails the fundamental test for good service and does not deserve to be patronized. P.S. Lots of indoor seating and menu was easily visible and legible up front, near the counter. We ordered their #1 special, #3 grilled pork, a taro milk tea, and a Vietnamese iced coffee. Both sandwiches were delicious. Meats were flavorful, but what I really loved was the no skimp on pickled veggies and fresh jalapeños w/cilantro. So many places don't add or charge extra. Bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. All milk teas are non dairy-they use a non dairy creamer as the base. I love taro, but this milk tea was definitely sweet, more like a dessert. But, it helped offset and balance the savory grilled pork banh mi. My son had the Vietnamese iced coffee- beware super strong lol. He wasn't able to drink most of it. Clean establishment, friendly service, and good food. We'll be back!

All the proteins were cooked perfectly. The real winner was the lemongrass Banh mi with once again perfectly proportioned ingredients. We also ordered the fresh spring roll, which never came but wasn't missed except that they did try to charge us for but did remove them. They definitely have some work to make this a comfortable dining experience but I wouldn't let it stop you from trying some phenomenal Vietnamese food.

Food quality has not been constant on our visits, usually late lunch times. Server was great. Answered my questions and addressed my concerns at the end of our lunch. The recurring major flaw, is the way the restaurant inside was designed. It is beautiful but made with all hard surfaces. Nothing present to absorb sounds. As a result sounds inside magnify to a point our servers have had to bend over or take a knee to gather clients food orders during busy times. I feel like I am ar a big Spurs game with the sound bouncing around. Those at our table have had a hard time to have a conversation with each other at times. The small room up front is designed so sound bouncing off hard surfaces is worst in this room. I have had to ask to be relocated twice from this room due the sound level. The kitchen area in the front do not have doors to abd from the kitcgen to the dinibg rooms. Another design flaw, as a result the seating areas loud sound comes into the kitchen area. I can not imagine how the staff communicate to each other in this work setting.
