Did someone hear my plea for a hotpot in San Antonio?? I think so!!! Tried this place out with two witty gays and my homegirl and my sidekick seanie. Honestly, I picked this place out BECAUSE of the name and that fact that I was having dinner with my gay friend. Haha he enjoyed the joke as well. First things first the decor is about as asian as its gonna get. But as we were being seated to our table I saw the most beautiful contraption on a booth table, a hotpot set up among 4 people!! YES! finally a restaurant that has this amazing idea. So what did I do? Ordered #123, substituted the squid for more meat, subbed out the yellow noodles for the white thing noodles and voila! Cold weather and sick tummy remedy. I was bit rusty and couldn't start the propane gas burner but the waiter was more than friendly and helped us out. The meats and veggies were more than accommodating for the 4.5 of us. One request: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD GOLDEN MUSHROOMS to the veggie plater to cook? Other than that, the meat plate had shrimp, fish ball, and steak. Veggie: tofu cubes, chopped spinach and chopped bok choy and of course the spicy sauce to top off if you want a kick in your teeth. The pot was divided into two slots, one for the spicy broth and the other not. Each had tomatoes, green onion and onion already cooked tender inside each. It was heaven in my mouth. More than anything it was just good to have a hot pot in a while. I wish they had one by seaworld. It's like the west side of San Antonio is constantly having to travel for good food! What gives!? First impression was like any other pho restaurant: small, clean, sparse. We were seated and given drinks immediately. That's where it faltered. We ordered an appetizer and two bowls of pho. About 15 minutes later, my bowl of pho comes out, sans the herb/veggie plate, then a few minutes later comes the appetizer THEN my husband's pho. No veggie plate for him. Service was attentive, but odd and scattered. Everyone was incredibly friendly and the food was fabulous, but I had to deduct a star for the odd service. Start the app first, THEN the main. Thai food and Pho are more of my favorites and this place again delivered and again suggested by Sarah F, I need to start suggesting some good places for her and begin gaining some points. I went in and after looking over the menu, I went straight for the Pho. The broth was very flavorful before adding the basil, cilantro, jalapeno and Siracha. THe noodles were cooked perfectly and the brisket and flank were huge. Once I added the ingredients, I was left with a large bowl of tasty, spicy, warm greatness. Is there no place for a bowl of good pho in San Antonio? The soup is so flavorless that it taste like they just added salt and msg to it. And the meat, is so overcooked. I know this is run by vietnamese people, but I don't know if I would call this good pho. The chinese food sold here is greasy and disgusting, vegetable from a can, meat tasting odd, even fortune cookies are stale. One star for merely existing close to home. If you are not picky about pho, then maybe you'll enjoy their food here, but if you are like me and had plenty good, authentic pho elsewhere, this will most likely be a disappointment for you too. Pretty decent vietnamese food, especially for San Antonio (we don't have that many vietnamese food spots, let alone many really good ones). I've only eaten here once with a friend, both of our dishes were pretty tasty. My friend had a pork rice plate, he seemed to enjoy it, the fishcake look pretty fresh. I had a vermicelli bowl, not bad, maybe a bit too much lettuce for my tastes. So, this is my first time here. I've been meaning to try this place for the pho for some time now. Today I was really craving some pho and decided to try A Dong! I ordered the spring rolls because its kinda become a habit for me to get spring rolls + pho. They were very good! I saw another reviewer comment on how the pork wasn't crispy in the spring roll, but honestly, I don't think I've had a spring roll where the pork has been crispy. I HAVE, however, had spring rolls that have been loose and end up losing their contents every time i dip them in thr sauce. Luckily, A Dong's spring rolls are MUCH better than that :) and surprisingly, the spring rolls also had mint in them! Its been a very long time since I've had spring rolls made with mint. Very fresh and delicious! Now the pho... was super delicious!!! I've had pho from places all over san antonio (pho saigon, pho ha long, pho cong ly...) and after eating all the great places in SA, this place definitely has a place in my top 3! I decided to finally try out this place especially when I already feel safe with 2 viet restaurants in SA. I went ahead and took a risk after reading some of these reviews and figured it would be pretty decent. My girl friend and I went here for lunch on a Saturday around noon. It wasn't very crowded so I was a bit skeptical. However I was surprised that the vermicelli lunch special (until 3PM) was pretty decent. The only thing that I didn't like is that it was served on a place. I had to ask for a bowl since I like to eat my vermicelli in bowls instead of on plates. This place was relatively clean compared to the other viet restaurants I know of but I expect that for it being located in the forum. Service was great as well, they refilled my water constantly and was prompt about giving us the bill and to-go boxes when we needed it. read more

On the hunt for a good Vietnamese restaurant my mom and I stumbled upon A Dong. Honestly, the name had kept me from trying this place out for a number of years but they make some damn good food. I debated on giving them either 3 or 4 stars but ultimately landed on 4 because the food is great and the location is ideal. It is located in The Forum right next to Orange Leaf (this is a major plus for me). The tempura shrimp appetizer is a must try, the crab and asperagus soup is interesting (not my taste but my mom loved it), and the vermicelli is TO DIE FOR. I usually always get the vermicelli with egg roll +/- pork. It's a totally solid dish that is light and refreshing and is a healthy version of comfort food for me because Vietnamese was a staple in my family growing up. You will always see A Dong chock full of hungry customers regardless of the time of day, unfortunately the service is lacking. Seating is always prompt but finding someone to take your order and refill drinks is sometimes a bit of a chore. I will overlook this for now because it seems commonplace to not have the best service in places that serve good food. read more

Finally found a good asian restaurant! Fish sauce chicken wings and beef chow fun please! (BTW, beef chow fun is thick rice noodles with beef. For an asian place, for some reason they arn't familiar with it being called "beef chow fun" in chinese, so you may have to explain it. I believe it's #108) It's a little expensive compared to California but Texas doesn't have much options so I don't mind. It gets the craving done. Only problem I had is that the workers all assumed I knew vietnamese. When I said I'm sorry I don't understand, she just stared at me and asked me again in viet... then got 2 other people to ask me in viet also. Girl, just because I'm asian doesn't mean I'm vietnamese. Universal City has six Chinese restaurants, which I find a bit perplexing. They're the second-most popular cuisine offered next to Mexican (chains excluded). It raises two questions: why are there so many of them in such a small city?, and - more importantly - which one is the best? Brad S. investigates. A Dong bills itself as "A Chinese and Vietnamese Restaurant," but I think the restaurant is more natively the latter. You can tell immediately that this restaurant is not like the other Chinese restaurants - it looks much more professionally designed and the menu consists of dozens of items that are spelled with letters that do not exist in English. Sure, they have some standard lunch specials that are comparable to other Chinese places, but I decided to go my own my and order something from the main menu. I'm not going to try and spell the items here, but I certainly gave the college try when pronouncing them to the guy behind the counter clearly patronizing my butchering of his language. I grabbed an appetizer - tempura fried vegetables. I'm not generally a fan of the flavor of the tempura, but these fried asparagus, squash, and zucchini were fresh and tasted good, all the same. During my visits to Universal City's Chinese restaurants, I've opted for the chicken in garlic sauce, partially because I like garlic, partially for the spice, and partially because the name is vague enough for the restaurant to be as imaginative as they like in the creation of the dish, so long as it had the requisite two ingredients. A Dong didn't have anything like this in the lunch specials, but they offered a similar item - numbered somewhere in the high 60s - that was pork in garlic sauce, prepared "Hunan-style." Not being from China, I had to read up on the province and its cuisine. Wikipedia tells me that "Hunan Cuisine is often spicier by pure chili content, contains a larger variety of fresh ingredients, tends to be oilier, and is said to be purer and simpler in taste." The collection of stir-fried pork, peapods, broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, and baby corn I received wasn't very oily in comparison to other restaurants I've tried, and there was a nice little heat component - to my surprise - but the variety of fresh vegetables was much more diverse than other restaurants, both in terms of service and preparation. I only made my way through half of the stir-fried mixture, barely touching the rice, but savoring the freshness of the vegetables. The sauce was there, but not overpowering. I wanted to eat more, but the portions was large enough for me to exercise some restraint. The thing that stuck out to me while I was waiting for my takeout container was green - a lot more of it being served than in other restaurants. It's clear that A Dong is working on a slightly higher level than their pure Chinese counterparts (as their price will indicate), and the next time I visit I will be more inclined to try the Vietnamese offerings. read more

Finally a Vietnamese place in the area that satisfies my cravings! We've been here twice now, both times with there being a nice crowd in the restaurant. Decorations and ambiance remind me of any china town restaurant I miss so much in Houston. On our first visit we both ordered our usual Vietnamese fare. Rice plate with grilled pork, egg cake and shredded pork. We also got the Vietnamese egg rolls as an appetizer. All flavors were spot on and portions are huge! On the second visit we again split a rice plate and as well as the salt and pepper squid. The squid was delicious. Nicely battered and seasoned with the salt/pepper/lime sauce that traditionally comes with the dish. Service has been good both times despite the crowd. There is patio seating although I haven't felt the urge to get seated out in it. The place is also family friendly as I've seen lots of families with small children dining here. They also serve the generic Chinese take out staples here, but honestly, I ignore that portion of the menu. read more

I have been eating in this place for a few years now. Aside from what I normally order is the fried chicken wings with fish sauce. The sauce is usually sweet with a taste of fish sauce, not too salty and not spicy at all. However, this year I've ordered these for so many times but there were plenty of times that it is not consistent to what I normally eat in this place. It's either they were burnt or not golden brown, or spicy and less sauce. I don't care for spicy food, so when I get home and I see these and they deviate from the norm, I get very disappointed and don't have time to drive back n return the food. My family don't get to eat them all and ended up throwing them away. I mentioned this problem before, and they said they had a different cook. Fine! We were there for small 2 round table gathering that was reserved and food was pre-ordered. It was 'traditional' Vietnamese food and it was DELICIOUS!!! No we didn't eat pho. We had 5-7 different traditional Vnese dishes and they were all very tasty. Some of us are from CA (the O.C. area where there's ample good Vnese food yet they couldn't stop 'raving' about the foods they had here). There was 1 vegetable dish I didn't care for but it's probably b/c it's better without meat. The service was good. The owner, an old man, was very helpful and sweet. I was excited to learn there was a new (to me) Vietnamese place close to the office so I dropped by for an early lunch. There were maybe only four other tables seated, service was prompt. They have a decent size outdoor patio, but it was definitely AC weather when I went. Their lunch menu includes Chinese & Vietnamese selections, & I opted for the Grilled Pork with Vermicelli and upgraded the eggroll to a soft summer roll. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any crushed-rice options. Hot & Sour Soup (yup, even with the Vietnamese selections) was good (I like it a bit sour) and so was the pork, although the meat wasn't quite in proportion to the noodles. The roll was average. I'm looking forward to trying the pho (in cooler weather) and some of the drinks & desserts (there were a few I'd never seen before). I tried the raw beef + beef ball, and my husband had one that has grilled beef + veggies (was supposed to be spicy according to the wait staff, but it wasn't at all spicy, not one bit). Both soup were plentiful and delicious. Also tried the walnut shrimp with mayo sauce, and we were quite pleased with that, too. Wait staff was attentive, and water refilled without having to ask. The People who work there were very nice. My wife and I shared menu number 104, the seafood chow main. It had crispy noodles and gravy and shrimp, mushrooms, squid, perfectly cooked vegetables. It was about 13.00, but is is more than enough for two people, they give you two plates. And taste? It was perfect. Really, really, really good! My wife loves that dish. I did to. My mother's international cooking and growing up in Houston makes me a snob at Asian cuisines. I was ecstatic that they were putting up an A Dong in the area where we live. Though it isn't the same restaurant as the one in Houston on Bellaire & Boone but I still have hopes. The atmosphere was nice. It's one of the nicer Vietnamese/Chinese restaurants I've seen; trendy and chic. It almost makes you want to stay past 9 to see if it would turn into a late night tapas bar. The menu was extensive. They have the usual 'chinese' dishes like broccoli beef and swt n sour fried items etc. and then there was the vietnamese affair. I was looking forward to having a nice bowl of pho with brisket and tendon or bun thit nuong or com something but they omitted all the the weird meats. Nonetheless, I proceeded to order my bowl of pho and the hubby ordered bun thit nuong. It didn't take long to get our order, but I was sorely disappointed. The pho broth was tasteless. I could've done better getting it from the ready made can soup at an Asian supermarket. The bun thit nuong lacked flavored. They could have used lemongrass and more brown sugar. How can you introduce Americans to Vietnamese cuisines if you leave out the essential herbs , spices and flavors that make it taste so great. If you are looking for the real deal, this is not the place you should hit up. As far as the price goes, it was ok. Not expensive and not cheap. We think they have chicken pre-cooked in the kitchen, and when someone orders a chicken dish, they toss the chicken with raw vegetables in the ordered sauce. The vegetables were not cooked--pretty terrible. The pho broth was okay, but the duck pho dish was unimpressive. The walls were dirty with food and the booth had crumbs and food stuck in the cracks. Had a fabulous Thai salad here with shrimp and-surprisingly-jelly fish. The salad was huge, with cuucmbers and carrots and crunchy peanuts and a zingy sauce that I immediately went home to try to replicate. They serve it with these funky large crunchy chip/cake things to load the salad on and deliver to your mouth, kinda like a taco shell, but I just wanted the salad. I ordered the pho dish and it was pretty good, I thnk cause since my mom makes it all the time, A-Dong's version didn't taste that much different. I guess I just don't have that keen sense on telling the difference between pho's, and besides pho is soup where you tweak the flavor to your liking-personally I like adding limes to make the broth sour. We tried the back of the menu option of the appetizers soup and an entree for two people. The appetizers were fried crab rangoons which were really yummy, fried sugar snap peas which I wasn't fond of, but my husband was, there was also tempura shrimp...too much breading for me, and the eggrolls were really yummy. I had the wonton soup and it was great, my kids loved it, my husband enjoyed his hot and sour soup very much. Finally for our entrees we ate sesame beef, pork fried rice, and special lomein. I could have done without the shrimp in the lomein, but I enjoyed the chicken that was in it, the mushrooms were fresh and very good. The fried rice has a nice flavor, and the sesame beef is really good, not the best I've had, but still very good. Had the chicken lo mein and hot and sour soup both were very bland. The lo mein was literally just spaghetti noodles dressed up like lo mein. My husband had the pepper steak and egg drop soup. He said his pepper steak didn't have much meat at all and was mostly peppers. He did however enjoy the egg drop soup. It was inexpensive at lunch for only $18 for both of us.
