Ruined a pair of Stuart Weitzman Boots ($795 full price) Be sure to check all reviews on Yelp, there are multiple instances of this shop destroying expensive shoes and the owner's behavior. Stanley from Divine Shine is not to be trusted with anything beyond a basic clean and buff. I provided a pair of Stuart Weitzman boots for him to repair a small hole the size of a pencil eraser in one boot. He stated that he could not repair the hole, he needed to add a strip of leather to the back. I could get into all the issues with his service, his ineptitude in dealing with any kind of fabric other than leather or his cartoonish arrogance. I'll just give the cliffs notes version here and let the photos tell the rest of the story. After two unanswered emails, two rude phone calls and one painful onsite visit, he provided me with a $60 refund for the work he did and $190 dollars toward the replacement of my boots that he ruined. This was after nearly 15 minutes of arguing with a petulant man who could not admit his work was unacceptable. I had asked for the cost of what I paid for the boots ($400) and a refund of the work he did ($60). In order to get any kind of money towards replacing the boots he ruined, he insisted I leave the boots with him so that he could sell them to "someone with lower standards". He also drafted an agreement he hand wrote on computer paper that he made me sign in order to give me the money. Ridiculous and performative behavior from a man that can't admit he made a mistake. So my dear DC boot aficionados, if you want a pair of designer boots with the worst stitch job you've ever seen and spots of glue sticking out the sides, Stanley has a deal for you. And I fully admit I lost my cool with this man at the end of our interaction. For his rudeness and denial of the poor workmanship, to his demand that he keep my property in exchange for less than half of the cost of the boots, to his complete lack of professionalism, I colorfully told him where he could stick it. Cheers, Stanley! Good luck selling my boots to someone with lower standards.

Just picked up my new SJP brunch slides. We are vaxxed, waxxed, and safe from sliding around after too many mimosas

I absolutely love this place! I have had several pairs of shoes and boots repaired, stretched, shined up, with soles and taps replaced or reinforced. The work is consistent, reasonably priced, and high quality. If you're looking for a place that will take care of your favorite high-end shoes (plus they do handbags too), Divine Shine has your back. And if you're not convinced yet, it's black owned with an old school dc vibe. I always feel like I'm visiting family when I go in.

I am very grateful to A Divine Shine for completely restoring and extending the lifespan on some pricy leather ankle boots. I regret not taking a before picture but safe to say they were very beat up between all my pre COVID commuting and I was skeptical that they could even be saved. The professionals at A Divine Shine did a great job with the resole and shine, and the price was very fair considering how damaged my shoes were when I brought them in. I will be happy to support this Black owned business again.

Look at your shoes. Do you think they look OK? I thought mine looked OK. Not ideal, but OK. They weren't OK. Yours aren't either. Take them to Divine Shine. I did. Now mine look as good as new, despite my neglect and scuffy ways. It's honestly shocking when you go into Divine Shine to pick up your shoes and they look like they did when you first got them. You forget how they are supposed to look. I took in 3 pairs this morning and just got home with them this afternoon - couldn't be happier - Mr. Mayes is interesting and funny, and he knows shoes. They're in my neighborhood and I'm heading back regularly. Rules: 1. Good shoes are worth it. 2. Good shoes will last forever if you take care of them. 3. People notice your shoes.

Unfortunately, this experience raised a serious customer service concern. When I dropped off my shoes, I specifically asked how long the repairs would take. Both the gentleman working at the front desk and Pete told me they would be ready in one week. After eight days, I called because I was leaving town and needed the shoes for my trip. I was then told that the standard turnaround time was actually one and a half to two weeks. Had I been quoted that timeframe when I dropped them off, I would not have left the shoes because I knew I needed them before my trip. When I returned to town, I stopped by the store to pick them up. The gentleman at the front desk immediately asked whether I was the person who had called. When I confirmed that I was, he responded, "Well, your shoes were ready last week." His tone was unnecessary and dismissive. I explained that the shoes were supposed to be ready by Wednesday, based on the timeframe I was originally given, and that I had been out of town since Thursday. There are several cobblers who repair high-end and designer shoes. I have continued choosing Pete, not because he is the least expensive, but because he consistently does excellent work. I am happy with the repairs to both pairs of shoes, but the quality of the customer service at the front desk does not reflect the quality of Pete's craftsmanship. I have referred several friends to Pete for repairs to their designer shoes and bags because I trusted both his work and the service I had previously received. Unfortunately, based solely on this interaction with the front-desk employee, I am now apprehensive about returning and will likely need to look elsewhere for future repairs. That is genuinely disappointing after years of being a satisfied customer.

I took a pair of boots on 10/9 to Leon that needed repair after my dog got to them. He came highly recommended from a trusted friend. He required payment up front, which usually I won't do as a first-time customer, but made an exception since he seemed like a good guy and my friend had excellent work done here. He promised an estimate within a few days. I waited a week before getting in touch by text, and got a very hostile response. We later talked on the phone and apparently he thought I was trying to scam him because his information has been "hacked", even though we'd already communicated in the same text thread. We cleared the air and he apologized for the misunderstanding. He got me an estimate 5 days later (for those keeping track it's now 10/21), and I went to the store immediately to pay. He took my money and promised they'd be done by the end of the month. He's just one guy, after all! Can't fault him for taking his time, especially if the work is good. I got in touch on 10/31 and he said he needed another week. I got in touch a week later and he says he's still not done, but says I can come by the store at 8pm that night to pick up. This doesn't work with my schedule, which is fine. That's on me. So today, 11/8, rolls around and I ask about when I can pick up. He texts to "come by 3pm", which means "come before 3pm". A typo, i realize in retrospect, and so when I showed up at 1:30 expecting him to be there I was surprised that the shop as closed. I called and was met with a stream of profanity about how he had told me to come AT 3pm. We bickered for a bit, I'm frustrated, and so I come at 3 to find him just starting the work on my boots. The resulting work is really bad. The patch leather is cut poorly and messily, the thread isn't properly sewn in, and there is glue all around the perimeter of the patch on the boots themselves. A cherry on top: when I was trying to leave the store, which is quite cluttered and small, I tripped over some detritus, and he laughed at me and then texted me "up yours" as I was getting to my car.

Not only was the woman behind the counter so friendly and polite, she was helpful. A few days later, she showed me the dress, and it looked fixed. When I arrived home to try it on, I could tell she did wonders. While the price I paid in the end was not the one she initially quoted, I was ok with paying slightly more as it involved fixing the hem and pleats of the bottom half of a dress as well as potentially adjusting the side seams where the pockets were. Additionally, she did caveat that she might not be able to fix the dress so I appreciated her upfront-ness. And so for the last two months, I have trekked to Farragut Square, greeting the folks behind the front desk and walking into the quaint space that is Barr Cleaners where the woman greets me by name and asks when I need my items. She is always flexible and can turn the items around within a day or two, if it's not a lot. Most of the times, I tell her she can take her time, and even still, it's only a couple of days, and I'm ok with that. The most recent dress I brought in clearly showed wear, and when I asked if she could take care of it, she smiled and said in her cute way, "No problem." Prices are a little pricey, but the service is worth it in my opinion.

July 9, 2026 I hate leaving bad reviews so much that I…read moreactually go back and delete them at later dates to not jeopardize anyone's livelihood or reputation, but this one will, hopefully, be immortalized. The first thing you need to know is that this establishment does not have a standardized list of services or prices anywhere online or in their shop. I first went to them on June 22 to have five dresses dry cleaned (quoted $79.45), one blazer dry cleaned and shortened (quoted $52.95), and one dress' zipper repaired as well as have it dry cleaned (quoted $52.99 or $29.99 depending on if the existing zipper was salvageable or needed to be replaced). The prices seemed a bit steep to me, so I told the woman at the desk, Eden, that I would shop around for a cleaner and maybe return. I decided that paying for convenience was worth it and returned on July 8 due to Barr's close proximity to my workplace. This time, I dropped off two dresses for dry cleaning/stain removal (paid $29.98), one dress to just have the zipper repaired (paid $28), and two blazers to just have shortened (paid $50 each). When I got to work, I realized that I was paying almost the exact same amount to simply have a blazer altered that I was quoted for an alteration AND dry cleaning a couple of weeks ago. I called to inquire about this and was given the runaround. A man who I suppose is the manager initially said that he did not know why the pricing was what it was then told me that it was perhaps due to some promotion going on. I asked how much the promotion was to result in the pricing nearly being equivalent, and he said 10% which still doesn't make sense. I told him so, then, presumably due to being tired of speaking with me, he told me that I could come pick up my items and receive a refund which worked perfectly fine with me. While picking up my items, Eden told me that the refund had to be processed through an accountant and that the man I spoke to before was not in at the moment to discuss things further. After getting in contact with him, he told me that the refund had been initiated and to text them my email address to receive proof of this via email. As of the afternoon of July 9, I have still not received an actual refund, confirmation of a refund, or any specific timeline for the processing of my refund. I called Barr this morning after they ignored my texts and got an AI assistant for the first time since trying to resolve this matter, so it seems I'll just be disputing these charges with my bank. These business practices are egregious, and I can only imagine how many others have been charged on a whim but did not realize and thus could not rectify matters. I cannot recommend Barr Cleaners any less. UPDATE (July 10, 2026): Barr Cleaners said they issued a refund this morning and requested my email to send me a refund receipt. I will update this review a final time when I receive the receipt. UPDATE (July 10, 2026): I received confirmation of a refund via email this afternoon. I'm glad to have this matter finally resolved, but my original rating still stands.

I paid $60 and waited approximately one week, only to receive my belt back looking almost exactly the same as when I dropped it off. When I brought the belt to the shop, I specifically explained that I wanted the **color of the leather to be evened out** and the leather properly reconditioned. The man assured me that he understood what I wanted and that he would take care of it. However, when I picked it up, the color was still uneven, and I could barely see any difference in the condition or appearance of the leather. This is not an ordinary $100 belt. It is a collectible belt worth more than $1,000, which is exactly why I was willing to pay $60 for professional restoration and trusted your shop with it. When I picked it up, I was told that the belt might not look different but they had applied a water repellent spray. I paid for the belt to be reconditioned and improved in appearance, not simply sprayed with water repellent. I can purchase a similar spray for around $10 at Walmart and apply it myself at home. I feel that I did not receive the service I paid for. If the shop could not even out the leather color or achieve the result I requested, I believe I should have been told that before the work was performed. I am very disappointed and honestly feel like I was scammed out of $60. I expected professional workmanship. Edited Note: I will not bring the belt back to the shop or waste another week waiting for additional work. Quite honestly, this workmanship is a shame and extremely disappointing and to whoever responded to my review, if you come back to read this, please tell me what you think--how does it look to you? I've been searching shoe shiners *verbatim* on Yelp and Google basically since I moved to DC in April, and this one never came up. The places that did, require you to leave your shoes for up to a week just to do a 15 or 20 minute job. Literally no one had a basic sit-and-wait operation; one place, a mobile service, ultimately took three days to answer an email, which ended up being too late. I randomly came across Union Station Shoe Shine one morning and immediately gave them a call. The reviews were stellar and the voice on the phone checked out, so I made the mad dash up the Red Line over there. Union Station Shoe Shine is a textbook shoe shiner's that you've assuredly walked past if you frequent Union Station. For some reason, it still never dawned on me. I was born and raised in New Orleans, where neighborhood shiners were a dime a dozen, and then I had a shiner in Houston that I'd drive 40 miles across town to visit. But I really didn't want to wait a week just to have my shoes shined, and this is where I learned the difference between the two types of shops. First of all, the two gentlemen--one of them named Ty--are personable as all get out. I sat in the "throne," basically, with my feet rested in the platform, completely stunned at the work being done while they answered all of my questions (they offer cleaning services, and you can also simply drop off your shoes, where they'll give you an estimate of a turnaround--usually about 15 minutes). During the conversation, my shiner explained why I was having trouble: dedicated *shiners* have closed down due to decreased demand, and all that are left are full-service repair shops who, naturally, take longer to do the same work. Facing a sea of travelers, I sat and watched him craft a mirror shine the likes of which I've never seen. I was left with this glazing white reflection of the skylight that retailers have to *Photoshop* in order to sell their shoes. Only midway through, my mind was made up that I'd be bringing my entire fleet back here, especially at $15 for such classic work. A dress shoe fanatic, I sent photos to all of my friends in the DMV area. All of that to say: if you're in DC and need a common-sense shoe shine, just go to Union Station Shoe Shine, smack in the middle of the train hall. They're efficient, super friendly and will take DAMN good care of you.
