I brought a pair of nubuck Oxfords in to have a half soul put on. When I came to pick them up, they had applied some kind of wax or polish to the new book and they were now shiny. This completely destroys nubuck leather in the shoe I did not ask them to polish the shoes and they do not have an understanding of how to treat different types of leather. I'm now sending them back to the manufacturer, who see if if they can restore them their original state. My wife also brought in a pair of boots to have the heels replaced, and they returned with some kind of wax or polish, which left a sticky finish on the boots. We did not ask them to polish the boots, and it shows a consistent misunderstanding of how to treat different types of leather. read more

Arrived in D.C. from Anchorage only to find my Gokey roller-bag would not extend or retract. I took the advice from Yelp and took it to Kiko's Professional Services, where they thoroughly evaluated the handle, dismantling it in process, and returned it to me the same day in good working order.The craftsman pointed out the high quality of the bag's internal components. Delighted at the outcome and NOT needing to replace teh bag, I offered to pay for such a thorough evaluation and repair. The shop's personnel would only take $20 of the $40 I offered. Those guys are AMAZING. Took two pairs of knee high boots that were tight in the calve. One pair seemed impossible to be stretched as the zipper only went about half way on my giant calves lol guys did the impossible and after two tries both pairs fit me perfectly! This week was my first time having Álvaro repair my shoes, and I am a FAN FOR LIFE! He did a great job on my various pairs of shoes...they are back in shape, looking great -- as they should! All is fab on that front. Secondly, and almost just as important as the repair job, is the fact that Álvaro is an awesome person, totally lovely in the right way. He listened to me about a sandal repair that has been attempted many times. He's probably about the fourth guy to attempt this repair and he's the one who immediately said that he would staple (not glue) it. I have a feeling that he's right, and I'll let you know once spring comes! Álvaro got my shoes done in days, which is pretty much lightning speed. I'm still waiting on one pair because he is special-ordering the exact Vibram sole for me. That is amazing in and of itself. I am already looking forward to going back to Kiko's! Wanting to avoid having to spend a lot of money for a new pair of dress shoes since I go years without needing to really dress up, I took in a pair of shoes, one of which had a deep scrape on the inside. I expected to be told that there was no way to fix the shoe, but instead they managed to patch up the scrape and polish the shoe so that only someone carefully inspecting the shoe would notice that it had been damaged. read more

I purchased several care products from them that they recommended I use to clean and protect my shoes myself, instead of pushing me to purchase additional cleaning services. This place is a combination cobbler and skateboard shop. (There's a skate park across the street.) The times I've been in there, there was a young guy running the show. He was friendly, but he seemed to not know what I was talking about when I mentioned a few terms specific to the construction of men's dress shoes. I got the impression his focus is on the skateboard side. I heard him mention a "master cobbler" who may be there sometimes, and for all I know, he may be great. But the only person I've seen, though friendly, didn't give me confidence he knows enough about shoes for me to trust him with a pair costing several hundred dollars and that I expect to last several decades. Maybe he hands all the work over to this master cobbler I've never seen. I just don't feel like taking the gamble. read more

I am very disappointed in the service here. I have a pair of high end leather hiking boots. I took them in for repair, & in the process, they broke a buckle. They ordered a new part & it took 3 more weeks to complete the repair. After 5 weeks, when I went in to pick them up, I found they had not cleaned & polished them, as was part of the original request! Rather than be apologetic, they were annoyed that I still expected the service I came in for. A week later, mind you, 6+ weeks, I was able to pick the boots up, & then they tried to overcharge me!! Luckily, I still had the ticket. Again, no apology or explanation at the attempted over charge. I will not return to this business. read more

I was impressed with this business. I brought in my tall leather boots because the zipper was broken. He was able to fix it within a few days and for only $12. In contrast, last year I had broken the zipper on the other boot and Sam Torrey shoe repair charged me $25 and gave me a 2-3 week turn around time. okay, I'm still relatively new to Yelp. I've written only 1 other review (my stylist and his salon) and this place (Kiko's) deserves me spending time to write a review as well. I've been taking my shoes to be repaired by Kiko's since early 2004. I've NEVER been disappointed in the work they have done with some of my most precious & most treasured items: my SHOES!! It's a family run business with a location in Arlington and also in DC. The Arlington location also has a side venture in skateboard gear, etc. Probably because his sons are avid skateboarders and there is a skateboarding park across the street from the shop. Anyway, I digress... Kiko (as I call him) is a very cheerful and accomodating man. He walks witha limp, something I think he was born with, but he doesn't let that stop him at all and I'm sure is what led him to a profession dealing with shoes and shoe repair. Incidentally, they also service bags that need fixing! Well, I've taken everything from a pair of boots needing new heel tips to one of my favorite pair of heels needing an new sole and inner lining. Just so you can understand... I'm like Imelda Marcos when it comes to shoes. Maybe even worse, er... better than her! I'm in my early 30s and I was already collecting shoes when I was in middle school. In fact I still have a pair of 1989 penny loafers!!! So my shoes are important to me. They are an investment and they reflect a lot about my personality. It goes without saying that ALL my shoes are my "favorite" and so I wear them all frequently. But I can't bring myself to get rid of any of them. EVER. Which is exactly why I love having a cobbler who does such impeccable work! Add that he's affordable, BONUS! Kiko is amazing- a true master of his trade and honest businessman. For $27 he fixed 3 pairs of pumps for me that my previous cobbler said were beyond repair. They have all lasted longer than I originally had them before breaking! I also had him clean up some nude patent leather heels that had lived a hard life and they looked almost new. He refused payment until I saw his work and was satisfied. Furthermore, when I said there was no rush, he sheepishly asked me if it would be okay to have them done by Saturday morning (it was Thursday at 6pm). I plan to bring him my Coach bags and most of my other shoes to clean up and extend the life. Why buy new shoes when Kiko can make your existing ones look just as good as the day you bought them! read more

I just got new heel pads on two pairs of Frye boots and they are fantastic! Both were worn through to the actual heel of the boot and I was worried after looking online that they would be expensive to fix. Not so at Kiko's! I paid $20 for one pair and $25 for the other, an average price for heel pads but we all know prices in D.C. tend to be much higher than average. He also cleaned up my boots a bit and they look fantastic. It's seriously refreshing to find someone who does honest work in this area for such a fair price. I will definitely be taking other shoes for smaller repairs now that I know he does such great work. read more
