We pulled into the carhop & placed our order of 2 meals: a cheeseburger, regular fries, & a root beer cream freeze, and a double cheeseburger, curly fries, & of course the original root beer, with a side of cheese curds. The drinks were amazing- just like we remembered! The food was also solid (especially considering it was fast food)! We would've rated this a 5-star but we were saddened to receive our order in a bag- not on a tray & the beverages in disposable cups- not real glassware. I have never been to an A&W so this was a fun stop. We weren't hungry but decided to stop and get some snacks and try their root beer float. We ordered the fried cheese curds, chili cheese fries, a root beer float and the island cream breeze. The root beer float was delicious but nothing special if getting it from there. The cheese curds were good for a fast food place. My oldest ate most of the chili cheese fries which is a first. The island cream breeze was ok, not my favorite but refreshing. The service was a bit slow but the drive up stalls were packed and there were people inside. There was one guy delivery food to the vehicles on our side so it would probably help to get more than one person working the outside to get people their food faster. Love this nostalgic drive-in! We stop here whenever we're in Florence. There aren't too many around anymore, unfortunately. We drove up to the menu board and ordered from our car...love that! We ordered our usual, root beer float and cheese curds! In addition my husband wanted a coney cheese dog and I decided to try the fish sandwich. Our order came out timely. Service was friendly. Food was yummy. Parking lot was clean. Only wish they had a garbage receptacle available outside the entrance so we didn't have to walk inside the restaurant to throw our garbage away. read more

It pretty much doesn't matter what the food tastes like if you have the real deal root beer to go with it. But, the spicy cheese curds and dipping sauce we're great!! Unbelievably rude! The dude with a hairnet on his beard! This review is for you! I get it we were the last customers. You were busy. But to lock all the doors and be a total asshole! My girlfriend went to use the bathroom which is outside and you locked the door on her before we even ordered! The cashier was beyond unfriendly!? Definitely an old school drive-in. Was fun to experience the old-timey ambiance. But the place was definitely a little sketchy. You drive up and park at an empty stall and the menu is right there next to you. To order, you push a little black button on the bottom right of the menu board (it's located under a flip-switch which was confusing at first - but some have yellow arrow stickers to help). It took quite a while for them to take our order but they were kinda busy. There were definitely some strange characters hanging out...so it feels a little sketchy there. I got a cheeseburger and chili cheese fries and a mini Reese's ice cream thingy, much like a blizzard from DQ. The food was alright...about what you'd expect from a fast food place, nothing spectacular but ok. Price is ok too for what it is. We always stop at A&W when we are out in Florence! I'm not usually one to go for a fast food chain often, but there are so few of these A&W drive-ups anymore! Plus a root beer, burger and soft serve cone just hits different after a day at the beach. This location has been busy every time we've dropped in, but they crank out orders surprisingly fast. The only thing I really miss is that you used to always get a coupon for a free cone (or maybe it was for $0.50) stapled to your to-go bag that we didn't have this time around. read more

I love this place! It's like a step back in time all the way around instead of just in decor. The friendly staff, clean dining area, parking lot and drive in. The root beer was served in a real frosted glass! I haven't seen that since at least the 90's from a fast food restaurant when you're dining in. The interior is just like I remembered the fast food establishments of my childhood with the tiles ceiling, hard booths and chairs but the best part of the whole ambiance is they have some 1980's prices too!! In May 2024 I have never been able to have 2 of us eat at a fast food restaurant and have $13.98 bill. That's 2 single bacon burgers, two sides and two large drinks. When you're in the area absolutely don't pass this place up. You can drink out of paper cups everywhere so come here for a frosty mug of root beer! read more

I wanted to give them a better review but our food was barely warm when they brought it out. Both of us had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I had a float while my other half had straight root beer. Burgers were cold but ok. Fries, even though they were barely warm, were good. Not sure what A&W does to them but they had a decent crisp and yummy taste. Hard to enjoy the drive in with the cold wind blowing in the open window. I typically order a burger with no tomatoes and extra pickles, which is always made correctly, cheese curds and a root beer float. It's always hot, fresh, and delicious! The service is typically slow, especially if they get a rush. This location is faster than the one near Corvallis, but I still wouldn't use quick as a description. The employees are always nice and helpful though. The restaurant is always clean and tidy. I'm not a fan of the fact they're restrooms are outside, but that's not a huge deal. It's a place I've been coming to for years, and will keep returning to when I am in the area. read more

This is for the A&W in Florence, Oregon. It's been here for decades. I was told by several people that this particular A&W was head and shoulders above the quality of other fast food places, and other A&W locations. And indeed it was. My burger was delicious, but the milkshake? Fast food shakes tend to be terrible, in my limited experience. I only tried one here bc a stranger recommended it. And the shake was vastly superior to any I've had in the last 5 years. It wasn't pumped with air or foamy. It had a real cream mouth-feel and taste. It was made with a very good soft serve mix, with real ingredients found in nature. Very thick. Extra wide straw. Even whipped cream and a cherry on top. I almost went for a simple root beer, bc, classic, and they tout it being made on-site. But I compromised with a root beer shake. Recommend! I asked some questions about the shake and the employees there were proud of their product and knowledgeable. The service was great and the seating and decor were classic and comfortable. The booths and walls looked recently redone but were still nostalgic. This place is worth a visit for the look and vibe of yesteryear--in addition to the food. read more

I don't usually like to eat fast food places, let alone while at the Coast, but heck it kind of is a tradition in Florence to get a mug of root beer, or a float! We were looking for a place we could eat in the car in the shade since for complicated reasons we had our cat with us. We saw that A&W had covered parking with trays for the windows, so it was perfect. Turns out it was a really good choice, since the food was better than we expected and A&W Root beer is always good. The person who brought the tray and took it away also found our cat fun. My wife had the Chicken Tenders basket and I had the 3 piece Cod Basket and they were better than we expected, quite good really. What a shame. I have been eating here for years, always ordering the same thing. Four coney cheese dogs with onions. Today, I was rung up and charged for four hot dogs with cheese and no chili. Instead of just making it right by their mistake, the owner insisted that I be charged for an additional $.50 each for chili to just put chili on them. I insisted that they start the order over, and apply my 10% discount. The poor customer service guy said the difference with the discount was only $.21, so they just gave me back my card and the corrected food order. This A&W is a landmark, one of the last of its kind. And I can see this one not surviving the current COVID-19 situation with management/ownership that can't even take an order correctly, nor take responsibility for an obvious mistake. read more

This A&W isn't like other fast food places. The food here is consistently good, the dining room and restrooms are clean, and you always get what you ordered - no going back for missing items. All stuff I appreciate. That being said, the wait times are horrendous. I usually wait less at quality sit-down restaurants. The least amount of time I've spent waiting has probably been 15-20 minutes when they were super slow. The longest I've waited for food here is almost an hour, 50-55 minutes. It's not "fast" at all. Be mindful of how much time you have if you come here and make sure you're not starving, you're going to be waiting a while. read more

Vacationing in Florence and decide to try this place. Worse decision of my vacation. It was 1pm and the place was packed. I ordered a Tuesday special-burger, fries and a frosty mug of A & W rootbeer. 1st of all the mug was luke warm and so was the rootbeer. I asked why they didn't have any frosty mugs and the manager yelled at me that they weren't ready. As a bartender, I know you don't wash 'beer' mugs in hot water and then put them in a freezer. Takes forever for them to freeze up. You should wash in warm water and immediately rinse in cold water-by hand. Putting the cool mugs in the freezer helps put frost on the mugs. I asked for a mug of ice, because my rootbeer was warm and got a nasty look from the manager and the guy expediting orders. Why?? Is it too much to ask for cold drink on a hot day? When I got my order, I dug in without hesitation. After a few bites, I noticed a musty taste. Spitting it out, I could smell something off. I looked through my food and found blue/rotten fries mingled with the rest of the fries. When I took it back, the manager glared at me and gave me my money back. I only wanted to eat an A & W burger, fries with a frosty mug of rootbeer. Never going back to this location again. PS-had diareaha and upset stomach for the next 24 hours, just from the few bites I ate. Me and the kids came here while camping at Jessie Honeyman. Its a cool old traditional A & W with the weird roof..it has sit down or car hop style delivery. OK inside..staff were very nice, Food was good..i find that A&W is just that bit better then other fast food places,,plus they still do the rootbeer in the glass mugs! They brought it dry which we didnt know until we stopped to eat as we got take out.
