Service varies based on who's working . I went to get a dress altered. It need to be hemmed, the top needed to be taken in, and so did the back and sides. (I was between sizes and sized up, so unfortunately there was a lot of work needed to be done). The woman who did the measurements (I believe her name was Wang), told me that I don't have to take in the top. I was almost arguing with her because the whole thing felt too loose and she insisted I just tie the back tighter (there's a decorative bow in the back). She tied the bow so tight it squeezed my back and my fat and skin was pouring over the dress, I felt and looked awful. After a lengthy discussion she pins the sides but still doesn't touch the top. Then she marks the bottom for the hem and has me change, only she literally pinned me into the dress. The pins crossed over the zipper so that the only way to take the dress off would be to take the pins out, unmarking the parts that had to be taken in. When I went to pick up the dress nothing was done. The sides felt like they were a bit better, but the top still felt loose and the hem was untouched. I knew this for a fact bc I had a photo of myself in the dress prior to getting alterations. The woman at the shop when I picked up the dress was blonde, and Wang wasn't there. I feel terrible writing a bad review because this blonde woman was completely mortified and did everything she could to make this right, including staying late past closing to get the dress done. Was told that it was more expensive than my last dress because this one has two linings on the inside. I don't think that justifies charging almost double. Just FYI for bridesmaids -- most dresses will have that double-lining so BEWARE. My friend was charged $35 at another neighborhood tailor. read more

STAY AWAY! PLEASE! I had an important interview coming up, and I had to tailor my new suit that I just recently bought. I had to get the blazer fitted, hem the pants, and tailor my shirt. This place is extremely overprice (I realized it after) She told that she'd do all of it for 120$. when I came to pick it up I noticed that she completely destroyed my blazer. The sleeves were twisted, and it was very uncomfortable to wear. When I asked her why it is like that, and id like her fix it, she blamed it on the type of the fabric, and said nothing can be done to fix it. As far of the shirt, she did not touch it!!! She said she made it a bit more fitted! but I swear, she did not touch it I asked her to fix it again and she told me that she'd do it for another $20 (after she told me before that she charges a flat price of $17 for fixing a shirt) As far of the pants, she hemmed them too short, and guess what? she blamed it on me, she said that it was my fault since I did not have my shoes on while she took the measurements. Which is a complete lie! she told me- no need for shoes. (Isn't it your job to tell me what to do while you take measurements??) One of the biggest rip offs in Astoria, overpriced, butchered my Blazers sleeves (literally just chopped off a button instead of taking it off the top) and when I showed up to pick up a dress ( a day after the ticket said it would be done) she hadn't even touched it, and we were on our way to a wedding, so she rushed and did it in 20 minutes, if it could be done so fast, why wasn't it done in the week that it was sitting there? She made every excuse in the book, and still overcharged me for it. 5 stars for service: I really, really love this place. The lady who runs this place is the sweetest person, ever. 4.5 stars for quality: They really do a good job. It's very rare that I am unsatisfied, but if I am for any reason at all, they've taken it back and provided quality service. Case in point, last week, I dropped off a pair of pants from Theory I wore for the first time (they got dirty from the horrid snow storm(s). The owner wasn't around, so I dropped off my clothes with someone else. Usually, the owner is there, and she remembers the stains and such. Well, when my pants came back, the stains were still there. She apologized and happily took it back. When I received it the next day, the stains were completely gone! They really take care of your clothes...unlike KJM cleaners down the block. KJM was cheaper than A&E and closer to my home, so I used to go there until my trench coat came back with the buckles completely ruined. If you care about your clothes, come to A&E. 4 stars for price: Compared to Manhattan, the prices really aren't that bad...but it adds up really quickly. The prices vary depending on different factors, but if I remember correctly, the ballpark figures for dry cleaning pants cost $4.50, shirts/blouses around $4, $18 for outerwear, and $12 for sweaters. I cannot stress this enough: BEST TAILOR IN NEW YORK CITY. Not just in Astoria--in New York City. I have been a bridesmaid eight (yes, eight) times and have taken each and every single dress to Pat for alterations. Not only is her pricing always better than what other bridesmaids in the wedding parties end up paying, but so is her work (other bridesmaids are always ooh'ing and ahh'ing over how well my dresses fit). She takes her time, she asks you how you'd like it to fit, she will tell you to bring your shoes for height and length measurements, she has a fitting room and has often asked me to try on the dress during my visits to make sure it is perfect. This fall, I will take her my ninth bridesmaid dress. However, I was compelled to write my review now because I have a wedding tomorrow afternoon and realized late last night that the dress I'd planned on wearing was way too tight. As I took it off, the zipper even broke. I rushed into see Pat at 10:30 this morning and brought some extra fabric in hopes that she could use it to let the dress out a bit. I was nervous it would ruin the look of the dress. Low and behold, Pat called me back at 6:30 ON THE SAME DAY and asked if I could come back in to try it on. Not only did it look and fit perfectly, but she actually made the dress look even BETTER. On top of the rush and her hardwork, when I walked in, she was pressing the dress. Lovely work on altering my wedding dress this fall. I bought my dress at BHLDN and they recommended some places in Manhattan. But I knew it would be more convenient to have it done in my neighborhood. The wedding dress didn't need major changes, but it was an intricate lace that required careful attention. I was so pleased that it was perfect in just on fitting! Pat was very attentive and sweet and even coached me on how to walk to show off the slight train and not step in it. She held on to the dress until we were leaving for our wedding so that she could time the final press and starch closer to the date. So that it would be as fresh as possible. Now we bring our dry cleaning to A&e and I plan to bring all my future alterations. read more

Went to A&E Cleaners for pants, dresses, shirts etc. and was OVERCHARGED on several occasions. The owner constantly changed prices on me all the time. I dropped off clothes one day and an employee showed me the price chart and that's how I found out. I went to the folks at A&E on a whim. I did not leave unhappy. I brought them my part cotton/part silk blend comforter because my cat had urinated on it. Everything I have ever heard and seen about cat urine led me to believe there was little to no chance of it coming out. I has to try though, as the comforter was a wedding gift from my best friend. When I brought it in I told the folks there that I was not expecting miracles. We picked it up a week later, and the urine was mostly gone. There was still a faint smell and stain, but I was still impressed they managed to get any of it out. However, the very nice woman there (who seemed like the owner and I am so sorry I didn't catch her name) asked if we could leave it with her and let her try it again. I picked it up today, and just opened it up. The stain is gone, the smell is gone...in fact our comforter looks and smells brand new! I could not be happier, and just found my neighborhood dry cleaners. read more

This place does a great job with your clothing, a nice family owned business. One thing to watch out for - they make up prices on the spot based on "ranges" and have tried to gouge me several times. The mother (who seemingly owns the place and does the tailoring - quite well I might add) usually offers fair prices, but I got her daughter and got totally ripped off for the same garments the next time. My clothes were always NOT cleaned in this place. In fact, my white shirt was in worst condition than when I brought it in (they decorated it with yellow stains all over!). The woman/owner there is rude because instead of doing the job for which she wants to get paid from, she doesn't offer the pertinent service and she only wants to argue with you and then get paid after all. My sister and her fiance decided in September that they were going to get married in December, so I had a short amount of time to find (I got to pick my own!), order, and tailor my maid of honor dress. After much searching, I found the perfect dress, but it would take many weeks to have it delivered, so I knew I had a short amount of time to get it tailored to fit. I got the dress at the beginning of December and had already done much Yelping to find a tailor that could hem three layers of chiffon for me in two weeks time. A&E Cleaners was the winner. The dress was actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be (thank God I didn't listen to them and order a size up!), so I had to have it hemmed, as well as taken in at my chest and waist. I arrived at A&E around 8:30 on a Saturday morning. No one was in the store except for Panayiota (I only know this from her business card), the seamstress. Panayiota was super friendly and very knowledgable (or maybe her thick Greek accent fooled me). I was in and out in 20 minutes. She said she'd have it ready a week from Monday and asked that I call a day before. Perfect. I actually called on Monday to remind her because I'd forgotten over the weekend and knew I couldn't get it that night -- it seemed she had forgotten about it, which I didn't mind too much, as long as it was ready the next day, and it was. She's a speedy little worker, that one. She asked if I wanted to try it on there (I didn't), so I took it home to try on. Now, I may have gained a pound or two in that ten days (I think I was having a skinny day when it was tailored), but my too-big dress was now a little tight. I was worried. Despite shoving my belly full of food throughout holiday parties and Christmas, I managed to fit in the dress the day of the wedding. The alterations came to $69, which I found a little high, but she did do a great job in a short time. And I did pay $45 for David's Bridal to take six weeks to hem one layer of sateen (a much easier fabric to work with) for me months prior. So all in all, I think it was worth the money and will be back if need be. read more

When I first moved here I loved this place. I would take all my dry cleaning and alterations here. But I am not sure that I will any more. I had my stuff dry cleaned and when i got it back it smelled like sweat, it didn't smell that way when I have it to them so I found it strange but I was away for a month and didn't have time to deal with the issue. (Now a side note is I go in there often and they know me by name.) So I was in there and told her that my stuff smelled bad she had me bring it back and still charged me, it was a portion but charged me on jackets (suit jackets) that obviously were not worn in 100 degree weather you can tell by them they were not worn. On top of which I had a dress shortened and I've never paid so much for it, the dress didn't cost as much I felt like it was making up for the dry cleaning. So needless to say I am not planing to go back. read more

I took in two pairs of paints to be hemmed, and the job should have been easy. When I tried one of them on for them, they rolled in the pants a little, and I expressed concern about the length; I didn't want them to drag. The lady *promised* me that this was the right length and told me to trust her. They had such good reviews for tailoring that I trusted her. When I got the pants back, they did a terrible job: the hem lines were crooked. The pants dragged on the floor. I took the pants to another tailor who fixed them (I picked them up within an hour of giving them to be worked on) and found the work very easy. He didn't want to say, but clearly thought the work done by A&E was horrible. read more

Completely botched shortening the sleeves on my husband's shirt the week of our wedding. We asked her to replace the shirt and she proceeded to argue with him about why he would pay $90 for a shirt and she knows someone who makes custom shirts "much nicer" than some guy named Calvin Klein. Prior to that, I took a dress to her and thought the work was just alright, but it was an inexpensive dress so I didn't make a big deal about it. She also didn't hesitate to tell me that time how cheap she thought the dress looked & was made. I'm going to the tailor to fix a hem, not for your opinion on my clothes. There aren't really many other tailors in our neighborhood but I will gladly go out of my way to never have to go here again. read more

Not sure but I'm reviewing kjm cleaners next door to sandros Latin food. Regardless.... brought clothes in. Older Asian lady took my clothes. Bill $40. Came back to pick up. Bill is now $48. Apparently she made a "mistake" without notifying me & jacked up the price on the ticket when I came to pick up. Ok. Couple of issues here. A. how do you not know what clothing you are taking in? U only do this 6 days a week for X amount of years. B. YOU made the mistake so why do I have to eat it??? From a business owners perspective I would say " hey I fudged up just to let you know but I'm giving you this now blah blah blah.." also when I picked up the counter guy spoke zero English & couldn't articulate the issue @ hand. Absurd. Me no English is unacceptable @ a place of business in NYC. Get it together. Instead of gaining a customer who dry cleans often, they lose good $$$ over an $8 discrepancy. I just moved into the area and dropped off a shirt I needed tailored for work. The shirt had ruffles on it of which I asked to be removed or shortened and the short sleeves to be adjusted into a tank top. The woman I dropped off the shirt with was very confused as to what I wanted and she said that the tailor was not there but if she had questions she would call me. I absolutely acknowledge that what I asked for was a bit on the complicated side but the reason I will never go back here is because after almost 2 weeks going by and never hearing from this place, I stopped by to see if the shirt was ready. The shirt was never even touched. The woman who helped me this time was the one altering the clothes. She said she was really busy and couldn't get to it in addition to not really understanding what I wanted. I asked her why no one ever called me to ask and her only response was that she was very busy. I was literally dumbstruck by the lack of care and professionalism. Not even a phone call? I was really disappointed especially after reading all of the great reviews for this cleaner. I was in a bridal party and brought a dress to be altered, I needed to have it shortened and taken in a bit at the top. I was told to come back after Monday, but when I showed up on Tues my dress was not ready. When I went back on Wednesday no one could find my dress. I paid $85 dollars and my dress was shortened but not taken in at all! Thankfully I found another cleaner that did an amazing job taking a lot of the dress in for only $25. I asked them to hem a pocket on my pants that has been hemmed before and they said it likely couldn't be done. When I got home and unwrapped my dry cleaning not only was the hem not fixed, they didn't even tell me beforehand they didn't fix it! I'm pretty sure they charged me for the hem too. I also asked them to dry clean this and another pair of pants and they were still stained. I feel like so many cleaners merely press your dry cleaning for you and don't actually steam clean anything and this is one of those. Also wildly expensive especially with so many other cleaners on the block. I would avoid at all costs and take your business elsewhere. read more

Superb local place to get your tailoring done! The owner quickly (we're talking a matter of days) altered my matron of honor dress and my daughter's flower girl dress, she did it very neatly and professionally, and at a reasonable cost. I saw a variety of other bridesmaids/formal dresses there, too, waiting to be picked up. She was kind and obviously knowledgable; we'll definitely be going back to her for any cleaning/tailoring needs. read more

I used to go to this cleaner which is literally down the block. However, I had left some dresses to be dry cleaned which I did not pick up in time. This was due to the fact that I had a sick mother who was undergoing emergency surgery and had been in rehabilitation. I had other things on my mind so a month went by before I could claim my dresses. I had seen a sign in their window advertising "Dresses for Sale" however and made nothing of it. When I called and went in person to claim the beautiful cobalt blue dress that fit me so beautifully, the "nice" Greek lady made like she couldn't find it. She told me she would call me back. She never did. I kept calling to find out what happened but she gave me a sad pathetic look. Basically she wound up selling my dress and not having the decency to tell me about it. In all my years as an Astoria resident, I never had this happen. The Oriental lady on Ditmars kept my forgotten clothes for months when I had forgotten them. I know the pink ticket says the establishment has the right to get rid of the clothes after a certain time, but then what is the point of them taking your phone number? It is common courtesy and decency to call a regular customer to let them know about an item that has not been picked up esp an expensive one. I will never go to this place again. Also because they do not do such a great job of taking off stains. I had to go back on several occasions because there was lack of attention to detail. and for the money that gets charged, it is not worth it. I have no basis for judgement with the alterations. I have been meaning to write this review for years, because I am so angry that something so legally reprehensible should happen. Your best dress gets sold because you couldn't pick it up while your mother was in the hospital and not get a full disclosure. Despicable. read more
