I am a long time customer of A-1 Electric in Warren Nj. It's owner and work person, Paul Hampton is quite simply a brilliant electrician. Nothing gets in his way. 3 examples. #1. I Put a small addition on my home. The GC hired a poor election. Numerous mistakes and problems. I brought him in to fix. Amazing. Troubleshoots, researches and all-mistakes corrected from a diverse set of mistakes made by the first elections from a different company. 2nd issue. Needed a replacement light in my in-ground pool. Paul put on a wet suit and bingo. #3. Have an electric pergola patio with a slotted roof installed a few years ago. The remote control stopped working and the roof was stuck open The original manufacturer moved to china and is unreachable. Nobody in the business could help me or didn't respond to my call. Paul jumped in , found a fix with his always thorough research and solved with a different manufacturer. He is so smart, well educated, excited by any challenge, always responds, keeps every promise and prices his work fairly. I hired A-1 Electric Co. (in Bridgewater and Warren, NJ) to fix a burnt out junction box behind my wall oven. They were able to promptly schedule my appointment. Two electricians showed up at my house. They were pleasant and did a good job repairing the junction box. They were at my house for about 75 minutes. Unfortunately, I had a concern with their charges and how they handled it. They provided me an estimate beforehand of $295. Their website clearly states the following: "We do not exceed our estimates. We are very good at our estimates. Two things can add to a bill: 1.) additional items that you may add, or: 2.) unsafe wiring that should be corrected. In either case, we'll be speaking to you about it to get your approval. If the work goes better than expected, the bill will be less! Since we always have other customers to see, we don't need to create unnecessary work to fill the day." After the job was completed, they sent me an invoice for $480.96 plus tax (total of $512.82). I was very surprised and disappointed to receive the invoice in this amount. There was no extra or unexpected work that was required on the project. I contacted A-1 to express my dismay about the cost, especially because of the statement on their website about not exceeding their estimates. Their reasoning for the excessive fee was unacceptable to me. I've paid the bill; however, I would not recommend them to anyone, nor would I use them again in the future. I also suggested that they remove the statement from their website about not exceeding their estimates as it is not truthful, and they did not stand by their word. read more

Paul came to my 86 year old mother's house to do diagnostics on electrical problem. Quoted me diagnostics cost of visit and gave me a range up to almost $300. No problem. But he wasn't able to find a problem, was at the house maybe 15 minutes. Received invoice with maximum diagnostic charge, PLUS a $90 charge to replace a lightbulb in the kitchen he didn't even ask my elderly mother if she wanted it done. My mom was upset, but I said nothing and paid the bill immediately. First red flag. Next day, electric problem still occurred and spoke to Paul again. He OFFERED to come back over and double check. I said not if it was going to cost another couple hundred. he said it wouldn't bc he never fixed the issue Cane back to house and continued to try and find the issue, but he couldn't. Fast forward a month or two, we get ANOTHER invoice of $200 for the second visit. I am LIVID!! Who takes advantage of an old lady like that?! Currently disputing the bill. Stay tuned. read more

Paul, the owner has finally come in turn to change the bill, they adjusted the 2nd bill from $180+ to around $97. He believes their process is the correct step. I'm not here to tell them how to do their job. My only issue was, if the job was done correctly with a little extra care (maybe spent extra 10 -15 minuets) to check all the potential trouble spots that connected to the same circuit breaker. Called and talked to Paul Hampton (the owner), explained the job and he told me how they're sooooo different from other contractors that do things like not show up. He sent a text and e-mail that said " Remember, you don't have to wait at home. We make a heads-up call as we head over so you can meet us. We call the home and cell numbers usually 20-30 minutes ahead." The email had two attached PDF's, as if they are so organized and a signature that said "No Job Too Small, No Challenge Too Great." No call ahead - the guy did show up a little late. I spent my valuable time going over everything that was required and everything appeared fine. Never gave an estimate - just wasted my time. All the e-mails and hype amount to nothing. Just knuckleheads. read more

I first dealt with A-1 Electric many years ago, when a monster snowstorm knocked down tree branches that, in turn, ripped the power feed off the side of our house. Fortunately, the phone worked--so I called our friends in New Providence who had said good things about their electrician. They referred us to A-1. I called them Saturday afternoon while the snow was still coming down. They called me back Saturday night. Sunday morning, in 18 inches of snow, they came and spent most of the day reattaching our feed wires. Among other things, this involved making new conduit, removing and replacing the electric meter, reattaching the wires at the roof, and so on--all outdoors in the dead of winter. Because of that, we were able to get our power back on Monday. Since then we've gone to them twice, both times for small, tricky jobs involving switches, one of which included snaking wires into a wall from the attic. That time they didn't have switches in the right color, so they installed switches in a slightly different color, then came back and swapped them for the right ones at no extra charge when the right ones came in. The third time they gave me an estimate in the form of a price range. The actual invoice was much closer to the bottom of the range than it was to the top. In all cases they came when they said they would, did what they said they would, completely cleaned up after themselves, are conducted themselves like professionals in every respect. I had them replace an old federal Pacific panel with a new panel. Polite people. on time. First thing they did was tarp the floor. Both electricians names were Paul. They removed all old wiring, panel and meter box. They swept and cleaned inside and out. They did little things like making phone and cable wires( not their responsibility) tied wrap and looking neat, making the job look even better. The price was right where I thought it should be. I filled out an inquiry on Yelp and A1 was quick to respond to my inquiry. They helped me arrange a time for an electrician to come in and give me a quote. When the electrician came and took a look at my situation, he said he will give me quotes for 2 scenarios. Everything was going smooth. What happened next is why I am giving them 1 star. It was the Monday after Thanksgiving. I asked A1 to please send me their quotes because I was having my TV delivered in a few days, and I wanted A1 to come in before my TV arrived. They sent me the quote a day later. After I reviewed the quote, I asked them to simply make an adjustment and to please resend the quote. It has been several days and I have yet to hear from them. Very friendly, prompt and reasonably priced work. My electrical panel was making a loud grinding/vibrating noise that caused me some concern. Turned out not to be a huge deal and Paul explained everything to me as he investigated the issue. I found the price to be fair and was pleased enough to request multiply quotes for some other projects in the house (recessed lighting, attic fan etc.). Paul also gave thoughtful insight as to the best way to address our needs and wants. The estimates provided also seemed fair and A-1 will be my electrician going forward. Recently I had a small electrical crisis. My circulating pond's pump was not working and fish in pond were not getting needed O2. I called A-1. They were at my house in 30 minutes. Problem was quickly diagnosed and defective outdoor outlet was replaced. Fish were saved. Reasonable charge for the work. Paul found other outlets not functioning but I limited Paul to the one pond pump outlet. Later I learned that Paul misinterpreted the limitation and believed I was unhappy with his work. The A-1 electricians who came and installed LED spot lights in several rooms in my house and did other electrical repairs were first rate professionals. In particular, I kept changing what I wanted them to do because I didn't realise how powerful the LED lights would be--so I wound up installing far fewer than I originally contracted for. None of this was a problem-Paul just kept saying, "We want to make you happy. You have to live with it. Take your time to figure out what you want." Highly recommended. read more

We have used A-1 since before Hurricane Sandy. They are reliable and prompt. Were just here two weeks ago. We will always use them .

I asked A-1 Electric to replace a light outside my front door. The light was installed in a position that was extremely low and poorly positioned. It was so low that the mailbox, when opened, actually hit the light when opened. The professional installers did not seem to think that this was a problem and completed their work of installing a lantern post outside of my house. The overall charge was 1400 $ for 2 hours of service. Upon questioning later in the day why the light was left in an obviously sub-optimal position, Paul came up with more solutions and excuses, charging more money and proposing more times that someone could come back and evaluate and give me more estimates. Paul is quick to come up with solutions and quick to suggest additional charges. Paul does not hesitate to nickel and dime the customer for every single service. The quality of the of work is far inferior to the prices that he charges. Cyndy is wonderful. I have used the company for 7 years. I will not use them any longer.
