This was my first visit to 9ers in Wharton. I had lunch based on the recommendation of a coworker and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was nice with some country decor. The menu was bigger than I was expecting so you have a lot of choices. I tried the Monday special which was the Chicken Fried Chicken with two sides. I had fresh veggies and coleslaw. The lunch special was good. The Chicken Fried Chicken was huge and I could only eat half. Everything had good flavor but my veggies were cold. That was the only downer to the visit. on saturday while traveling we were looking for a good old country cafe. so we got off the main hwy and drove through a few of the towns and were getting hungry. i know this isnt a little cafe but we were really hungry. so we tried it. wife and i both got the fried shrimp and fries. wife points out the uncleaned shrimp with the poop still in it. i cant say anything else was wrong per say. but the food was not to our taste. that was saturday. today is Monday and i am still thinking about how much i disliked it. just my taste i guess because they do seem to have a decent yelp rating. but it wont go out of my mind. read more

A neat looking place from the road and inside too. You order at the front counter when you come in, from a huge board full of different meals . The young man suggested a couple of things, but I thought the chicken fried steak was what I wanted. I should have listened The chicken fried steak came with a loaded baked potato & green salad. I also ordered some grilled vegetables. The salad was ok, the croutons were soggy because the salads were pre made sitting in a cooler. Visited this restaurant on 12-29-22. The food was good and cooked to order The lady at the register was nice and friendly as usual. I was a little bit disappointed, hoping this would have more of a small town diner feel. Instead what I found was essentially a Denny's without waitresses. Today was a beautiful day on the outdoor seating was a definite plus. The chicken fried chicken was all right, not outstanding, but well-executed. The french fries were actually delicious. These two things together make me think that the fryers are properly maintained, which bodes well for all the other fried foods on the menu. The salad was similarly unambitious but reasonably good. The only real surprise, and it wasn't a great one, was that what passes for "corn" here is some sort of corn, peppers, tomato blend. Did not know what to expect when I went to this place. I was in Wharton visiting a friend. That friend wanted me to experience country life...being a city slicker, it was definitely an experience! This place is what he suggested we all went to let our families eat. I agreed, figuring it would be a normal chain restaurant. I must admit they they have quite the variety on the menu. What blew me away was how friendly the staff was as soon as you walked through the door. Many greetings and smiles...seemingly like people that really enjoyed the job that they do! Must be a nice feeling, because my job is just a means to an end...but that is neither here nor there! As aforementioned, the pricing and variety was not that bad. I see the lunch time menu is a little cheaper on the weekdays. They also serve breakfast at this location on the weekend. They offer burgers, salads, chicken, potatoes, steaks, fajitas, seafood and a wide range of appetizers. They kept touting the term "home made" throughout the restaurant, so I truly wondered if the taste would be any different. Long story short, I ordered the Southern Style Burger, which has bacon, cheese, jalapeno, mushrooms and avocados on it. I also picked up a chicken tenders kids meal and a hot dog kids meal. All in all, potion size was good for all items ordered. You could tell that the burgers were hand formed in the back, and the burger was well seasoned and sizable to say the least. Good taste overall. The steak fries, surprisingly, were seasoned really well, and fried really well also. Since we dined in, you get to get whatever Coke product you wanted, unlimited. Having a child with nut allergies is a challenge sometimes, but the kids meals came with a cookie. I know that sometimes bakers will have food items exposed to everything they cook with, so I made an inquiry about nut exposure. The staff was prompt and courteous, to say the least. They did not wish to take a chance so asked if they could give my kids candy just to be safe. I agreed to their terms! Throughout the dining experience, the staff came checked on our group multiple times. The manager actually brought more candy to my kids just because. One server heard my child say they were going to need more ketchup soon for their sizable steak fries, and brought out ketchup so no one would have to stop eating to service my child! For actually using seasoning, they get an extra half of star. For actually have a staff that was awesome, another half of star. The entire place was clean as a whistle, including the restrooms. 9er's Grill is a staple establishment for Wharton since its early days inside of a gas station. Today, it's just as friendly, although much roomier, especially with its recent add-on. The food is always fresh and it's prepared quickly enough to get you in and out during your lunch hour. Personally, I prefer their chicken sandwiches vs. their burgers, just because I love chicken sandwiches, but the few times I've gotten their burgers, they've been delicious as well. Check out their weekly lunch menu (that extends well-beyond lunch) for great food items at bargain prices. This is the worst customer service, management, and staff I have ever encountered.A simple phone order is like starting a war on the phone they speak to you so rude. Mind you, because I go to the 9ers in Katy and Houston all the time and the food is really good but what happened to southern hospitality. Overall 9ers grill is a decent little texas food joint. Its nothing special but if you want a quick bite to eat itll fill you up. The pricing is a bit high but they make up for it with GIANT portions that are nearly inpossible to finish. Like most texas restaurants, 90% of what they offer is fried. Dont get me wrong, i like fried food but it would be nice to have some lighter fare every once in a while. I hadn't been in here in almost a year and this time wasn't as good. The food portions were smaller, one fish fillet instead of two that I had last time, and not too many vegetables. To me, they looked like someone just opened a can of mixed vegetables and tossed it in the plate. That was disappointing, if I wanted that, I would have eaten at home. The fish was good, cooked well and seasoned well. The rice was cold and the roll was cold. The worst part of my visit was the dirty sticky table and putting my hand on a wad of gum that someone put right on the side edge of the table. It wasn't hidden, it was facing the cash register. Cashier huffed and got it for me then rolled her eyes when I said thank you. Having people who aren't staff touch things in your restaurant is completely unsafe during a pandemic and being rude to customers seems to be an ongoing theme here. Went in for breakfast. Sign clearly said breakfast 11:30. I go in at 11:10 am. The cashier says breakfast ends at 11:00. (Because of COVID ). How stupid. Doesn't even make sense. A place with a large menu should have a waitress serve you so you do not have to stand at the counter for 10 minutes trying to figure out what to eat. We had a shrimp platter. The shrimp were VERY small and way overpriced. $14 for 6 tiny shrimp over rice with a small salad with only cheese and soggy croûtons. We also had a jalapeño burger. It was a small, excessively overpriced patty with a LOT of fluff. There was more lettuce than beef. The only thing that salvaged this meal was the fried mushrooms.
