The environment is very lovely but a little older style. Personally I would rate this more of a 3.5 not a straight 3. The food portions are large which is super amazing considering their prices. The server we had, Ingrid, was super sweet and went above and beyond. On the down side the booths are very uncomfortable, it lacks in some seasoning, and the parsley is put on very heavy handed which made some bites of the meal very gross. From the moment we sat down, Rachel set the tone with her warm, genuine welcome and attentive service. She struck the perfect balance between being professional and personable, making us feel like valued guests rather than just another table. She was once knowledgeable about the menu, offering thoughtful recommendations, that my husband likes to ask for, that turned out to be spot-on. She paid close attention- checking in at just the right times, keeping drinks refilled, and making sure everything arrived exactly as ordered. A Hidden Gem in Needville! We stopped by The Jay Cafe and were blown away! The country fried steak was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside--just the way it should be. The jumbo shrimp were absolutely delicious--huge, juicy, and full of flavor. Everything tasted homemade and seasoned with love. The portions were large enough for 2-3 people! They also have homemade pies daily! The service was friendly and welcoming, and the small-town atmosphere made it feel like a home-cooked meal with family. Took my dad last night for Father's Day--he wanted their CFS. I had been hungry for fried mushrooms, and they had them. The only negative was that our appetizer, salad, and food came too fast. Would like to recommend The Jay Cafe in the Tanger Outlet Mall. The chicken fried steak with 2 sides was amazing. We had fries and fired okra. The fried okra was fried perfectly, crisp, not hard or mushy. My husband and I shared a large CFS, it was plenty for us both. We bought a chocolate and a coconut cream pie to bring home. Just had the chocolate and it tasted great. Please visit this location, there's not a lot of foot traffic there and the owner is unsure he can remain open. You won't be disappointed. At here with my family for the first time after we were having a hard time finding places open on Wednesday. They had eaten here before and recommended it and I heartily agree. Service was great. I had the chicken fried steak which was a half portion and it was excellent. Had a great flavor and the half portico with a cup of soup and mashed potatoes was more than enough for me. Wife had the fried shrimp and I snuck one and it was great as well. She also tried the fried okra and enjoyed it. Quite the complement as okra can be bad if not prepared right. The rolls were also good and they come with honey butter that tastes great and I believe was homemade, just like all of the food. They have a variety of pies for desert as well as cobbler. This place is the best! The portions are huge, and the food is amazing. Their rolls are top tier. We always get the chicken friend steak. The half size is the perfect size for me. I haven't had the chance to try a lot of the menu because I can't go and not get the chicken friend steak. A waiter who seemed fairly dour and walked by about 10 times and never asked for my order. I asked for coffee, there was no question about cream. I suppose that I was deep in tea territory and coffee in the afternoon was probably out of the ordinary. I waited about 10 minutes and then walked out. I ventured 30 miles from the Uptown Galleria area to The Jay Cafe in Needville TX because a photo of their Mesquite Grilled Ribeye special with 2 sides for $23.99 came across my Instagram feed. I was not disappointed! I started off with the Jay Cafe Jalapeno Poppers which were HUGE! They are handmade daily, contains bacon (YUM!) and served with a small bowl of ranch dressing. They were hot & delicious. Then I ordered the Mesquite Grilled Ribeye, well done, with Mashed Potatoes and Fried Okra. The mashed potatoes were a bit stiff, but were hot & delicious and the fried okra didn't have much taste to it, but the Mesquite Grilled Ribeye was bursting with flavor! Served on a bed of mushrooms & onions, the ribeye was juicy and hot and was not overrun with fat edges. It was perfect. I topped the meal off with a peach cobbler & some ice cream. I love the feel and atmosphere of this restaurant. It gives a traditional country feel to it and thats what hooks you. The food makes this place much more of a reason to go. Went to Jay's after church on Mother's Day to take my wife for a Mother's Day's lunch. We got greeted at the front by a hostess and were seated immediately in a booth. We were looking at our menu when our waitress came and took our drink order. After looking through the menu our waitress came back with our drinks and wanted to take our order. My wife ordered the BLT but wanted it on regular bread, but our waitress said it only came on Texas toast. She also order some onion straws. I got the Little Texas Chicken fried steak, with bake potato, with only butter and sour cream and a dinner salad with Honey Mustard dressing. As we sitting there another waitress was taking another tables order and we heard her tell them about the Special for Mother's Day! Salmon, Fried Catfish or Prime Rib, I think! Well we were very surprised and disappointed because we were never given the opportunity to hear or choose from that special. Well we got our food and my wife said there was a lot of grease coming from the bacon sandwich and the onion straws where only medium warm. My salad or what you call a salad was a bowl of iceberg lettuce with 2 pieces of tomato and Honey mustard dressing. My baked potato had soar cream but didn't taste or see any butter. The Chicken fried steak with cream gravy was like it had been in a heat drawer Or heat lamp because the coating was very dry even with the gravy. Even got extra gravy but still couldn't finish it. We were disappointed with the meal knowing that we could have had one of the specials! We did order some slices of pie to take home. Peanut butter, Chocolate, Coconut and Peach Cobbler. We love the Peach Cobbler and the Coconut Cream, but the Chocolate was more topping than Chocolate and the Peanut Butter had a funny peanut butter taste for us. I also constantly peruse the "best chicken fried steak" lists compiled. Most of the time, I'm disappointed. The steaks are either too tough or not very flavorful. But not here. Jay's is exceptionally good! Very tender and tasty. The sides that I had (mashed potatoes and corn) were fresh and tasty. And the complimentary rolls and sweet butter was a nice touch. This place never disappoints. We ordered two grilled chicken sandwiches to go. The chicken is well marinated, wood grilled and the delicious smoky flavor is there. What really makes the sandwich is the jalapeño bun. Yummo! The only thing is that they put the lettuce, tomatoes & pickles under the bread and bun was very soggy. Still delicious.
