It's been about 15+ years since I've eaten at this establishment. It was formerly located on the frontage of US59; a change in the on-off ramp affected this business. Decided to get off US59 and drive the less than 3 miles to the "New" location. It's definitely smaller than the original. The staff was attentive, pleasant and took our order quickly. It's order at the counter and it's delivered to your table service. I had the ($13.45) 2-meat plate with 2-sides. I saw on a different Yelp review that their onion rings were GOOD! I ordered them and they ARE! You don't get a bunch for $3.60? , but they were very tasty and I was glad I ordered them. The building itself will remind you of an old Texas restaurant. Clean tables with advertising on them and the staff is quick to clear off the tables. With major road construction going on, if you're heading US59 South, you'll need to take a detour to get back on to that highway. Other than some uneasy feeling (repeated gas/belching) from either the sausage OR the onion rings (gulp). I enjoyed the meal. ;) read more

If I could give a 10+ I would. Yelp came thru again, and we almost decided to avoid the extra 6 minutes it took to get there. The chicken was so tender & delicious, as was the brisket, green beans, and onion rings (yum!) Yes 2 of us ate all that - and there's more. . . . Homemade pies were irresistible. Lemon meringue w/ 5 + inches of meringue, and real American apple pie. Great value, great price, terrific service. At least 14 people in the kitchen, and although it's quite small, maybe 400 sq feet in dining room, hundreds of carry out meals were being delivered to cars outside. I was disappointed with my barbeque chicken today. Normally it is barbequed to perfection. What I received today was very light tan colored chicken with NO flavor. I travel to Wharton about once a week just to get one of my favorite foods there. Today was disappointing. I do not know what happened with the chicken today. When I got home an opened my plate, I was shocked at how it looked and when I tasted a piece it was bland. I literally seasoned the chicken myself and placed in my oven. Let me start off by saying the tables are so cute! And so is Hinzo the bobcat! Very tempted to touch him! Also the staff is so sweet! I loved the mac and cheese! My cheeseburger was so big I love that because I wasn't expecting it! The fries were amazing too! The sausage sandwich was also a hit! In a word: WOW! This is one of the best BBQ spots I have ever eaten at. The location is right off the main drag In Wharton, and the food is incredible! I had the brisket and smoked turkey breast, both of which were perfectly smoked and oh so juicy. I'm not sure what all was in the potato casserole, but I do know I will always order this as one of my side choices. I'm sure I'll be taking a pint or two of this home, as it was incredible. The decor is simple, but clean, and the employees were all very friendly and helpful. The service was quick and the prices were very reasonable. I have no idea why those clowns who gave this place 1 star were complaining unless they're just the kind of people who love to bitch and moan about everything from ice cream being too cold to rain being too wet. I really wanted to give 5 stars and even so, I am definitely not disappointed. The ribs were delicious, a little bit tough and not as juicy as I would like; I would give them a 2nd chance next time I come through Wharton. Onions and pickles were not worth writing poetry about but not terrible either. I got onion rings and fried okra for my sides, both tasty and very crunchy. The BBQ sauce wasn't overly tart but had a good mellow flavor. Against better judgment and to my regret I got a slice of pecan pie. It was absolutely amazing! I only regret it because I totally blew my diet eating here, LOL!!! I feel like I got real value for my money. All the people complaining must have cranial anal insertion syndrome . This family run restaurant serves the best food. It is just a small building with a drive up and only a few tables to sit, seat yourself after ordering, but it moves food fast! I counted 7 cooks in the small kitchen, moving in determined directions. my wife and I had the huge stuffed baked potato, stuffed with barbequed brisket. The thing was huge, and so delicious. Wife ordered the pecan pie. What can I say, this is TEXAS. My daughter ordered the lemon merangue pie. Super. The prices are reasonable and the people are friendly. I went for a late lunch. I had the two-meat plate with brisket and sausage. Brisket looked like brisket but was faint on flavor. Sausage flavor was non-existent. Low quality mass produced bottom shelf sausage. Both meat portions were small. The white bread was also of low, lower, lowest quality. Potato salad was sweet. I didn't care for the very large chucks of potato. Too large to mingle with the other flavors in the salad. Had to doctor the salad to eat it. Beans were dry and lacked much of anything that says they are yummy. By the time I bussed my table to head out none of the three staff at the counter said anything, thanks, have a good day, appreciate your business or anything to say "come again". Hinze's suffers from consistency in a big way. They need a pitmaster that knows how to smoke meat. There is another option in Wharton except it has outside seating. A little warm right now for that. Their Country Kitchen location on the other end of town is much better. read more

Sooooo, went here for its name sake but it is not as good as was hoping for. Had chicken fried steak and would not recommend it. It was slightly over cooked and you could tell it was cooked in old or over heated oil that had cooked catfish in and the white gravy tasted like it came out of a 2 day old over heated pot with burnt gravy on the bottom batch. First, be aware the old building on 59 (with the live tree trunks inside) burned down several years ago, but this one, while much less charming, isn't hard to get to on Business 59, so it's no hassle if passing through (plus you'll see a brontosaurus (?!!!) by the river, & an old-fashioned TeePee motel on the north end of town). Also, they're apparently closed on Monday now, which I learned the hard way after driving from Sugar Land But as far as food goes, it's all excellent. BBQ may sometimes only rate 4 stars, at least compared to central Texas BBQ, but most everything else I've tried is a solid 5 (haven't tried burgers, etc). Recommended: Brisket, chicken, onion rings, potato salad, fried okra, cobblers. It's so hard to find places where they still know how to cook like this. I noticed they have a country-style cooking restaurant in Wharton too, now, so I gotta try that sometime. read more

Mediocre barbecue. I certainly have had more tender brisket. The old place had better atmosphere and it seems, better barbecue. They do have homemade dessert. I had the light lunch consisting of one meat choice, two sides, onions, pickles and a slice of white bread. Pinto beans were really good. Had bacon seasoning and tasted like they were made there. Potato salad was scratch made. It had egg and a copious amount of mayo. I did not like it, but I am no egg or mayo fan. Yeah, you have to put some mayo in potato salad, but not that much. Others may well like this, though. It was reminiscent of eating deviled eggs, only with lots more mayo. Baked potatoes are huge and offer a good value, as did my light lunch. Was only 8.25. Better price than I have gotten anywhere else. The biggest disappoint for me was the space itself. This has no atmosphere. That is being polite. Great restaurant! My football crew stopped in the way to put game. Bar-B-que stop with a large menu. They have a variety of meats and sides with great desserts. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich, moist cut and a side of mac and cheese. Brisket was excellent but I wasn't a fan of having the sauce, pickles and onion already in the sandwich; I like to be able to control how much sauce I pour on. The brisket however was really good. Just wish I was able to taste it without so much BBQ sauce. Wharton is a town on the interstate where many out of towners pass by while traveling and our bbq is different in other parts of Texas. Mac and cheese was tasty but the portion was lacking. Felt more like a portion served on your elementary school lunch tray. Apple pie for dessert was great but they don't have ice cream! The restaurant is aware patrons would like to have ice cream with their pie but doesn't seem to capitalize on the request! Individual ice cream cups would do the trick! I'd definitely come back the next time I pass through Wharton, I'll just ask for a plain and dry sandwich and a larger portion of Mac, maybe they'll have ice cream next time! read more

Amazing BBQ! We get Hinzes every time we visit Wharton! The ribs are our favorite, but we've never had anything we don't like from here.
