I'm pretty sure the higher the number on a pho restaurant, the better it is because I haven't found a place that beats this one, at least not in Reno! 999 Pho is a hidden diamond in the rough based on food alone. Everything else: the service, the atmosphere, the location, etc. is just a bonus.
The food here is fresh, the soup broth is deep and flavorful, and the noodles are light and have the perfect texture. I've gotten a few items from here and my favorites have to be the #34: Bun Bo Hue Spicy Soup and the #44: the Flame Broil Beef with Lemon Grass! The Spicy soup isn't actually that spicy. The best way for me to describe it is that it warms the throat and the soul. That's the level of spiciness I get when I eat this soup. And this is no ordinary soup! I don't think you can get this at many other Vietnamese places in town. Even though it's a bit spicy, the spiciness does not overpower the intense flavor inside the broth. The noodles are a bit thicker than the typical rice noodles in pho, but I like it! It adds more texture to the dish and some of the broth gets infused in the noodles. Finally, this dish has all of the meat! It has ox tail, beef balls, brisket, beef, pig's blood and flank. I'm pretty sure those are all of the meats. I love this dish because there are so many different meats and textures!
The Flame Broil Beef is a favorite of mine when I don't feel like soup. This dish is a cold noodle Vermicelli Dish. It has rice noodles, lettuce, sprouts, carrots, cucumber, peanut, and onion. But what I really like about this dish is the beef and the sauce that you pour over it. The beef is perfectly flame-broiled; there are little charred, crunchy bits on the edges, but the beef is still really tender and juicy. I like how the beef sits on top of the noodles, so the fat and juices from the meat seep into the noodles. And the same thing goes for the sauce. The sauce is mainly made out of vinegar, fish sauce, and sugar. I like it a lot because it's acidic, salty, and sweet at the same time. And it really cuts the fat of the beef.
The service is above average when you compare it to the other pho restaurants in Reno. Even when it's busy, waiter/servers actually go around the restaurant and check up on you and fill up your water, unlike some other places *cough* Golden Flower *cough*. Although, the service still does not live up to other "typical" restaurants. Another thing I like about the service is that it's fast! A group of 6 of us ordered food, and within 10 minutes we got all of our food!
The location isn't ideal, since it's fairly hidden, but once you find it, there is ample parking spots. It's located in a small, old strip mall, but it's quaint and clean. The tables and floors are clean, there are more than enough tables for several large parties, and the atmosphere is lively.
Overall, my experiences at 999 Pho have been exceptional. I have no complaints whatsoever, and I look forward to coming back and trying more of their menu! I rate this place 999/1000!! read more
