I have been going to this 99 for almost 30 years and have had very few complaints. Never had a bad meal here to this day. What i don't understand is the lounge is decorated like a sports bar but more often than not, they don't have volume on the tv's. I stopped in to eat and watch the Patriots recently and was told the volume hadn't worked for the past couple of weeks. That is very odd. I went elsewhere and ate and watched the game. Went for lunch and restaurant was extremely clean and very friendly staff. Ordered the regular hamburger as the waitress told us it was bigger than luncheon special. It was extremely fresh, quality hamburger cooked perfectly medium rare. Very juicy and tasty with crispy fries and great fresh coleslaw. Overall very good for a large regional chain. Used to be our favorite local take out joint. But lately the boneless wings are thin and overcooked with just lots of breading . House salad is bland iceberg and tomatoes have no flavor. Portion of haddock is tiny. They need to stop using large plastic containers that are black and hence cannot be recycled. Clam chowder tastes like it comes in a can. Steak also overcooked and salty. After being in a pinch and trying to find a last minute child-friendly restaurant on the way home we ended up stopping at this 99 in Salem. Easy, quick, and convenient. Normally I would not go out of my way to write a review about a chain restaurant 5 minutes after leaving but-- we just experienced the best service I've ever had in my lifetime. Based on the customer service itself, just, wow. Every 9's in New England needs to take a lesson from this particular location. Both our server Cheryl and the manager Howard were both so kind, caring, and attentive to us and our toddler. Seriously, they were so welcoming and friendly and frequently paid visits to our table to make sure we had everything we needed and that we were satisfied! The service was above and beyond, we really felt at home. We will absolutely be paying this location another visit! They changed the TVs to the NBA playoff game that night for me and created a new dish that wasn't on the menu; combined the New Orleans Shrimp dish as the topping to the nachos. If the chicken was cut smaller they might have received a solid 4 stars but they way they chicken was set up, it would've broke the strongest nacho. Cut way to big. I come here every week because my friends enjoy the Trivia Thursdays and Questionary on Wednesdays. I come here to be with my friends but I have tried some food and drinks. I've ordered the 49 cent bone-in wings in hot with bleu cheese. I've ordered the rustic chicken sandwich which I was really surprised that I didn't like it since I like all of the ingredients. Not enough chicken and too much confusion with the seasoning. I've ordered the Bruschetta Chicken and it was okay but the rice was not. I really like the chicken fingers and chicken parmesan. The bartenders are great especially Ryann Kelcie and Becca. My friend recommended the Towering Midnight Fudge Cake dessert and it was good--for the first 3 bites. Then it was too much. They should make a smaller version. Too overwhelming, definitely not for just one person. Now for Stump! Trivia, it's difficult because it's very clique-y, and the same people win all the time. The DJ that runs it is nice but has weird music choices, says he takes requests. His personality is okay. Archie who runs the Questionnary is laid back and has a much better attitude. I like that he includes the bartenders in this game and sits at the bar so it's more inclusive. This game is more like Family Feud. He's very engaging. read more

My sister who plays Trivia at the 99 every week, mostly at the Danvers location has brought me back something every Thursday. Yes, I have eaten food here close to every week for the past few years. It is hit or miss depending on what I order and how long it takes to get here. The fish tacos are excellent and is so is the fried chicken plate. Their ground sirloin dish and steak tips are hit or miss even when eaten fresh on the premises. Today I ordered a Turkey Club with fries. Definitely a hit. if i could give a zero rating i wouldn't i would not even give them the satisfaction of being on the board they should receive a negative score. i ordered a steak medium well, and it came to my table purple and cold. the included mashed potatoes were also stone cold. my party also ordered a salad, and it came with cheese which was not ordered. another member of my party ordered the chicken parm and most of it was slimy and cold. when we asked for our meals to be fixed, our waitress gave us dirty looks and was not very nice. i've never been a huge fan of the ninety nine and this just confirmed the fact that i will never return to this location. very disapointed. read more

I so often get take-out never more then a burger and it was alway great tasting, but i decided to dine in and recurve the most poor service ever. Not only did they truly undercook my 12oz. But also undercooked my sons junior both were still purple in the middle, so after waiting about 30 minutes for then to cook two new med-rare steaks, (everyone else was done eaten) they undercooked mine and made my son's very well done, so needless to say i did please just give me the Vermont burger i always have and Antony filed up on rice! !! Due to circumstances beyond my control (renovations in my house, Daddy somehow having many gift cards, the fact that's 2 minutes from home), as of late, I have found myself (along with parental units), often eating here. It's very relaxed, which I like, and I like the adult contemporary/soft rock music. I have even found two (yes, two) entrees on the menu that I like. One being the BBQ turkey tips, which are mildly sweet with a kick of spiciness. The next one is the chicken, broccoli, & ziti with scampi sauce, which is more flavorful than some at places on the North Shore that say they are Italian. I love the boneless Buffalo wings (yes, I realize they are known for these). I don't like the rice offering (I'm trying to cut back on the fries). It's rice pilaf with mushrooms (don't eat them) & bell peppers. It's exactly the same rice at the Beverly Depot (and it's sister restaurants) has. But, they don't even tell you it's a vegetable rice pilaf. Service, for the most part, is slow & sometimes rude. My mother is disabled, so they like to sit us in the farthest booth away from the door. A little common sense/courtesy is nice. I do like the bar, and enjoy their drinks. And they just added pomegranate iced tea (NA), which is tasty. read more

Meh, meh and more meh. The first "meh" is for the cookie-cutter feel of the 99. Everything about it looks and feels like a big chain. The corporate HQ probably calls its restaurants "stores" because that's how they look at it. Their "stores" are just for pushing "product," and not to evoke any sense of a dining experience for the customers. The second "meh" is for the food itself, which is bland, cookie-cutter (again with the cookie cutters), and "portion-controled" (God forbid they should give you one more quarter-ounce of meat or one more string bean in that perfectly measured out serving... after all, it all adds up and cuts into profits). The seasonal stuff looks like it was thought up in a corporate laboratory by a committee, or perhaps a corporate staff of overworked institutional chefs. Even old New England favories like the traditional lobster roll, offered in the summer, is rubbery and bland because it's probably made from frozen lobster from the corporate freezers somewhere in Genericville, USA instead of fresh from the boats of our own local lobstermen. Maybe the lobster does come from them originally, but gets frozen and shipped to the corporate HQ freezers until it's time to dole out to all of its "stores." Whatever. It's still rubbery and bland. I'll go to Farnham's or one of a zillion other great lobstah places, thankyou. Even the mini desserts taste either bland or weird, and some I sampled had gluey textures that hinted at their being perhaps more than a couple days old, or else mixed from some pre-fab substance. The third "meh" is for service. Though there are some truly good, professional servers at this particular 99, and the overall service when my boyfriend and I have gone (he used to love to go for the burgers) was good and cheerful, that was only when I dined there with my boyfriend. One evening when I came in alone, I was virtually ignored though the place was quiet, then eventually got led by the hostess to this little dead-end corner off to the right of the entrance, and seated waaaaaay in the last booth before the server station door even though there were empty booths all over the restaurant. And, a couple that was seated 10 minutes after me (in one of those better located empty booths) was waited on first (albeit by another server) while I sat yet another 10 minutes with no sign of my server. I got up and left. I did go back with my bf on another evening -- I wouldn't have gone back on my own -- and service was okay and the food was as meh as always. Now that my bf has had to move overseas for a while, I have not ever gone back to the 99. The best tidbit of advice I can give, if it's a done deal that you're going to the 99, is that you stick with burgers and beer. Burgers are a generic thing anyway, and you can smother them in cheese, onions, ketchup and other stuff to give them flavor. And beer, if you drink enough, makes even the meh-iest food taste better after you've had a couple. read more

I have been here many times with my girlfriend, friends etc, never really had an issue they recently just did the place over it looks really good. you can sit at the bar or booths the booths have plenty of room you can also see the TVs from there. This location is not close to me but whenever I work at Endicott College I go see Sara. I've always liked the 99 restaurant especially the Somerville location because my picture is up on the wall. lol... Regarding the food I think they do a good job. This isn't the Ritz so you have to be realistic with your expectations. That doesn't mean you should eat crappy food but just remember this place uses paper napkins and serves popcorn (which I love). I got one of their 9.99 steak specials. It was somewhat small but again it was 9.99. Cooked medium rare the way I like it. Clean plate club for that meal especially with a Tall Boy of Sam Summer. This is my go to place for excellence. I play Questionary on wednesday nights and it is a blast. The bartenders, waitstaff, and hosts are always friendly and professional. I can honestly say that I have tried mostly everything on the menu and have only been dissapointed with one dish (I am a seafood stickler from growing up with generations of fishermen). The fish is always awesome, however I stay clear of anything with shrimp in it. That being said, my dish was promptly and curteously replaced. read more

I've had the 99 here and there for years. It's not the best, but usually is not the worst. I got lunch there today and it was the worst food I've ever had. I got a grilled chicken salad and loaded mashed potatoes. I literally had to pull out half the salad as it was so bad and inedible. Someone put in overly brown lettuce, one of the tomatoes actually had mold on the side of it, the onions were like rubber and tasted odd. Gross. The mashed potatoes tasted like they had been sitting in the fridge uncovered for about a week. Awful. I don't think I'll be getting food from the Bridge Street Salem one ever again. This was my favorite place to grab a good meal and drink. I visited last Saturday and I couldn't believe how dirty it was. After observing the condition of the place I lost my appetite but didn't say anything to my companion because I wanted them to enjoy their meal. The floor in the room where the bar is was filthy. We sat down at the bar and that was visibly dirty and sticky-I had to ask the waitress to please wipe it. She grabbed a wet dish cloth, wiped it, and replaced the napkins and silverware on the wet bar!! I was served a bleu cheese wedge salad and set it back-the lettuce was brown!! This is unfortunate because I really like the menu-but don't think I'll be going back there!! Management, please do something to fix this place. The 99 in Salem is simply a decent chain restaurant. Just what you'd expect. If you want a burger or something fried, this will do just fine. The only complaints I've heard from people is that they order some fruity, Mediterranean salad or other and got let down. What I say is that if you see some combination of ingredients you've never encountered before and you're at a chain restaurant, it's probably gross. K.I.S.S. method all the way at places like this. Also, I can't speak for the people who have complained about food safety issues, but I have never even suspected the 99 of making me ill. Because my wife is a plain eater and likes this place I have eaten here dozens of times. I have never gotten sick and never been served anything spoiled.
