Great spot to watch some sports or just get a casual dinner. The free popcorn is a sure winner. There are different specials during lunch time, some on weekends, some early in the week, so it tempts you to come back. The bar pretzel was amazing and super crunchy on the outside with a cheesy queso sauce. The prime rib was so thick and juicy, and the bacon mac n cheese is quite the premium side, perhaps more cheese than macaroni. The lunch sized baked scrod was pretty low calorie but the broiled breadcrumbs on top made it really tasty. The chicken and sausage al forno was a delectable cheesy pasta dish. We came twice, and the first time the service was so terrible at the end after 20 minutes we had to ask the host if our server left for the night. The second time we went the service was great. So the food and prices were great, booths were spacious, bathroom was clean, and parking varied from good to packed because it shares a lot with a Whole Foods. Service fluctuates in quality. They took 35 minutes to seat us when tables were open everywhere and then they took another 30 minutes to bring us the check. This is my second time coming to a 99 Cafe restaurant when I take a trip to Boston to see my patriots play. I was traveling around Boston to take some photos and uber around places until I wanted to grab some food. I stopped by here and sat in the bar area. The lady was nice and gave me the happy hour menu and ordered a couple of items to try. The Country Fried Chicken was the best dish I have tried which I recommend. I used to go to the 99 all the time @ different locations. You could get a great meal for $10 & it was very good. I loved it! In the last couple years, I have only been a few times & it was always to the Charlestown location. Each of those times has been less than stellar. The "99" food quality has definitely gone downhill. I've talked to others & they have said the same thing. Yesterday I ordered the chicken parm dinner. It looked OK, but the chicken was tough, like it was overcooked & had a taste of fish, like it was fried in the same oil as fish. If it was smothered in tomato sauce, it may have been more bearable, but it barely had any sauce. I was hungry, so I ate it, but I have to think carefully before deciding to go back. I'm very disappointed! The 99 used to be decent food for a decent price. Unfortunately, neither is true any longer. read more

Yes- even chain restaurants deserve to be Yelp! Tough to figure out what direction to go in- do I compare it to other 99s or the food options in the area? I'm going with the former since I don't usually eat at the 99. The 99 is relatively affordable and consistent pub fare. Being a chain restaurant means you have a pretty good in and out system and there's usually never too long a wait for a table. I came here and got the country fried chicken, and my wife got the all-star burger. All were tasty even if nothing was mind blowing. Its pretty simple, the burger will taste like a well-made burger with fries and the country fried chicken was pretty much par for the course. Both entrees were around $16 a piece. You could get away with a date night for about $38/pp with tip included. Not bad if you're looking for a solid, consistent place where you don't have to wait or make a reservation. read more

Came here with a party of 6, was told by the host and the manager we couldn't sit in the bar area to watch the Celtics game because all of the servers were cut, weird to me that servers in a late night bar area are cut before dining room servers and we were going to leave. Until our server who they sat us with Thomas O jumped in and said, let's go to where the TVs are I will take care of you wherever you want! He Was easily one of the most genuinely kind and accommodating servers we've ever had at this location. Came here to watch the bruins game with my friend. It was on a Thursday and there was a trivia game during the time. They had a $5 special for apps and so we decided to just order from that menu. We knew we had to get the mozzarella moons, so yummy! We got a dish of loaded mashed potatoes which was just ok, and we got the chicken Fajita flat bread which was very delicious! This 99 location is our go to Spot when we don't know what we want to eat and aren't in the mood to look for parking! The food here is always on point and consistent! I love there goldfever wings with a large side of blue cheese as an appetizer followed by there BBQ chicken wrap and fries. I stopped by on a Wednesday night looking to dine in and the host was no where to be found. We waited in line for 15-20 minutes and no one was at the podium. Not one person from the restaurant acknowledged anyone in line. We had 2 people in front of us who waited for longer and said no one came out to help them either and that the only reason why they will continue to wait is because they had take out.. The restaurant was opened and there were other people dinning in already. I've worked in customer service and retail in the past and you never leave the front without someone there.. After waiting 15-20 minutes for someone to greet us and to be seated- that was already a bad sign so we left and found somewhere else and so did other behind us. Imagine how long it would take for the food to come out if we were actually seated. It'd probably take hours.. read more

I have been to many of the ninety nine properties across new england and I can confidently say the bald, older gentlemen tending bar is the worst bartender in the entire ninety nine organization. He is incredibly rude, slow and I even over heard him use a homosexual slur while sitting at the bar. Not really any excuse for that in this day and age, especially when you're working. Gave two stars because I have gotten great service from a few of the waitresses, but every time I come in and see that man tending bar I almost want to turn around and walk out. read more

I have been coming to the 99 for decades. While it's not fine dining, it was at least good, inexpensive and consistent. But all my last four visits, I am left with a question, what has happened to the 99. I had dinner tonight at the Charlestown location, I had the baked haddock, baked potato and salad. The salad was consistent, however, much smaller than normal. The baked potato was not completely cooked and the baked haddock was tasteless and even a bit watery. My instinct is that it was cooked not completely thawed. the crumb topping was flavorless, not seasoned and mostly burnt. On my last visit, I had a combo a State Tiffs and falll off the bone ribs. The steak tips were sinewy and difficult to eat, and the barbecue ribs were anything but fall off the bone. Heck, it was difficult to cut them off the bone. Same story with the baked potato. Undercooked and not pleasant. Before that it was the chicken pot pie which was a watery mess... You get the idea. Quality down, price is up, not a great recipe for continuing to patronize. One plus however is the service is usually very reliable. read more

My server was really nice and so was the hostess. What was not nice was how sick I got last night- including being in their bathroom for longer than I would've liked or chosen. I had a cup of the beef and veggie soup with a sprinkle of cheese on top, cheese and crackers and the BBQ chicken wrap. I was charged a DOLLAR for a sprinkle of cheddar or mozzarella on my soup! After my father and mother divorced, I used to have to spend my Friday night's at the original Ninety-Nine in Woburn with my mother's new boyfriend, Craig. My mother thought it would be a good idea that Craig and I had alone time together, so I could bond my future stepfather. Craig's favorite restaurant was the Ninety-Nine - and much to my chagrin this is where he'd take me EVERY Friday night - from ages 8 to 13. The Ninety-Nine was not the type of place my father, Nat Sr., would take me. He was a very successful used car salesman, so I was used to fine cuisines in high-end eateries around Boston, Hingham, and Hyannisport (post playdates with JFK, Jr.). So even by age 8, I had developed a refined taste in food, so eating at the Ninety-Nine with its grade D beef, bland overcooked broccoli, and chemically-poisoned chocolate deserts became pure torture for me. To hide the fact I would not eat this food, I used to cut up the meat and vegetables into small pieces and push them around the plate to appear that I had consumed some of it. A tip I learned from my older sister Natalie, who aspired to become an anorexic. Dining at the Ninety-Nine was worsened by the fact that Craig, who wore a toupee and had orange-leathery skin from years of manual labor, would embarrassingly flirt with the overworked waitresses just trying run out the clock (on life). By age 13, I informed Craig that these 99-dinners weren't fit our dog, Natsie, which enraged Craig and put an official end to our bonding sessions. In an ironic twist, I have found myself still going to the Ninety-Nine in my adulthood, now in the Charlestown location. Why? Well it turned out my dog Natsie the III loves the Ninety-Nine. Whenever it's time for Natsie the III's heartworm pill, I drive my beamer over the Charlestown Bridge and pick up a few meals. While you might think this is too extravagant for a dog, I crunched the numbers and it turns out the Ninety-Nine's $9.99 value meal is a better meal deal than purchasing Alpo. Trust me, I was a statistics major in undergraduate school, Harvard University. So take it from me and my dog, Natsie, don't waste your money on expensive dog food at the supermarket. The Ninety-Nine is serving up the best dog food in the Boston-area, and at low-low prices. As for my stepfather Craig, I recently found out he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I'm not saying his condition is the result of all those dinners at the Ninety-Nine, but who really knows. I guess I'll see how Natsie is doing in a couple of years. read more

For those naysayers of this particular Ninety-Nine, I counter with this, take it or leave it: It's a chain, so the menu is going to be the same in pretty much any Ninety-Nine you go to. Even the daily soup specials don't change from location to location. The pictures on the walls: the same. The clientele: well, different, technically... but really, the same. What I love about this particular Ninety-Nine is the great service. And couple that with great specials ($10.00 for a three-course dinner, for instance, including dessert), it's a no-brainer. Ok..so you are reading this...good! The 99 is a great place to catch a game or a quick meal. Not to go out to eat on a date.....business meeting....or anything fancy. It is a good place to go in the clothes you just woke up in and to get something in your belly that will kill that hang over from last night and still leave you with money in your pocket (or debit account) to do it all over again tonight! Menu is basic American classics and a few Italian and seafood dishes. You and 4 friends can eat here and leave full for under 40 bucks. Good for before a Bruins and Celts game, as they have free shuttles from there that leave 45 and 15 mins before tip off or puck drop...and you can easily hope on the Orange Line at Community College to catch a Sox game or get the commuter rail to Foxoboro (ha...I know who would do that?). They do loose one star because they still have 1990 TVs in the place! But all in all its a great place as long as you dont go in there with a Cheese Cake attitude! read more
